This forest serves as the gateway into Norrath for the wood elves of Kelethin and high elves of Felwithe. And with Ak'Anon and Kaladim so close by, it is not uncommon to see gnomes and dwarves throughout the area as well.

Don't let the safety of Kelethin's well-fortified boundaries fool you. While the area has numerous guard posts and patrols, the further you travel away from the city the higher level of danger and risk you will encounter.

The orc stronghold of Crushbone can be found along the northern boundaries of the forest while the darker, more dangerous Lesser Faydark lies to the south. Only those more experienced should consider travelling to the two areas.

I am new and I logged on and it was dark and I couldn't see anything. I am a wood elf do I get some special kind of night vision or something.

Adjust the Gamma setting in "Options" if slide it all the way over, your vision will improve radically! I had to die 4-5 times first (before I complained out loud and someone stopped to help), but I can see fine now. Good Luck!

ahh.... yes, wood elves get Infravision, just like most of the other races. It gets pretty dark in there (trust me, my paladin and ranger started in felwithe/kelethin) dont worry, get to know your newbie area better and head for the lights at the lifts if u get into trouble.

hope that helps... :)

Can darkies be bound in Gfay?
RE: Binding in Gfay
# Jun 21 2001 at 10:43 PM Rating: Default
not about binding, but darkies.
I play on the most populated server in the night, (prexus) and have never seen a darkie anywhere, except the time i made one, and there was one other person in Neriak, the only darkie ive seen since i started play 2 months ago. Is it that Darkies are not good, bad factions and such that people dont want to be them?

I am a 6th level Ranger on Xegony, and have traversed BB, mainly killing skunks, but have come back to Gfay and am constantly by the Orc lift in Kethelin. At the end of the path I draw one or two orc centurians to me and manage to kill them. My armor is inadequate for the task, but money is a hard item, and that which I do get I spend in fletching(up, up and up it goes). I go quite often to orc hill and join the groups there. Only bad times are when you get a dozen Centurians retaking the hill..all I can say is Ouch! CB belts are quite Plentiful, I have 3 backpacks full in the bank. Oracles just love to cast sicken on you and hit you with fire.

how true to the other person who posted.

auction them....... thats the best way to get money in Greater Faydark (well one of the best!) On Xev you can get diffrent prices, depends on the time of day. Auction some off and save the others, eventually you'll hear someone lookin for the belts and giving a good price (around 5gold to 1plat)

so, keep saving those belts (untill u can get Legioanire Shoulderpads!) abd selling them, good money

type /auction WTS CB Belts! do that every 15 min, some1 will eventually buy them. ie sold belts from 5gp all the way to 2pp each (darn good fer a level 8 with about 24 belts! hehe) then u can buy banded armor, good for any tank at lower levels, except fer monks of course! (nah duh!)

good luck and look at all of dem pretty trees.....

BEWARE!!!!!

On Vallon Zek me and my friends's favorite activity is to jump newbies that wander off the beaten path! If your a newbie and your lost make sure not to tell anyone or we will get you, hehe. We also like to wait by the lifts and fire arrows at the newbies that frequently run by. Take my advice, if your under level 9 and you see more than 2 gnomes hanging out some where, RUN!

Ok. So your a newbie right. And your all hunting the newbi grounds and toolin all the skelies so you can get the bones to go to kaladim and hand them in. WHEN AL THE SUDEN A STUPID PAWN AND SOME OF HIS BUDS COME ALONG TO PLAY. SO you stick around and atempt to kill them... whith no such luck. SO you say to yourself "hey.. i am a smart little guy.. i will run to the newbie lift where those cool lookin buff gards are!" so you run there and you stand in front of them.. AND THEY DO JACK SQUAT!!!! I duno if they have been stayin up with drunkard or what... but they are dumb *** hell!!! They stand there thinkin there all that... but when you really need them.. they don't do nuthin. So my advice is this.. if the lift is down.. run on it and start goin up... then run on the shaft of the lift and run around and around the metal thing around the tree.... YOU WILL NOT GET CRUNCHED!!! and the mob will just run of and fall to his uncertain doom... Piece out dudes

Bandit camp consists of three teepee looking huts occupied by three bandits. I've never seen anything but female bandits there (not that that makes any difference) and they're too close to eachother to be able to pull them one at a time. If you do get all of them, have your group concentrate on and take out the one with the weapon first. I don't know if i've ever seen them where one (and only one) had a weapon while the other two went hand-to-hand.

Hope that helps...good luck!

There's not much you can do other than wander and try to fight what you can, run from what you can't. I have a lvl 7 druid and I know from experience that no one is going to help you. Druids aren't useful to group until at least lvl 14.

Good Luck (You'll need for the next year it'll take.)

<lol> Purchase 'Harmony' spell. Go. Now :)

Reason: here are a series of posts in the Enchanter Forum which eulogise (1) the Bandit camp located at 1250, neg 700, and (2) the 5th level Druid spell, 'Harmony' which makes camping these bandits, for all intents and purposes, risk-free.

Note: 'risk-free'is a perjorative statement and such always be taken to be read as 'almost'.

(1) Well how i got my Enchanter up is by killing Decaying Scelitons and bats a Orc Pawns but if you whant to level fast i would get up to atleast lvl 5 or 6 and there is a secret camp that has some Bandets that are 6-8or 9 and kill them and 6 you will need to group with another 6 but after that you can solo. There are 3 or 4 (Its been a while since i've been there) and you can take all of them. Probaly at 6 you can solo it just i had to group on my bard and on my cleric and to get there go to Kelethin, Then on the way to Felwith you will go over a hill tru a ditch and over a knother hill. Then RIGHT after that you will see a turn in the road DONT TURN go stright and you will go for a little bit and then you will see a camp fire. Thats where they are. Sorry to all if i put out too much information

What do you mean being lazy is no way to live?

(3) re: Bandit Camp (loc 1250, neg 700)

From memory, there are 3 female bandits in this camp who are -not- aggressive. However, I am a -little- concerned at the above poster's (see above, above) advice to solo said camp at level 6 because that would require the 'lull' series of spells.

Note: 'lull' reduces the mob agro radius, which if successful, will allow you to pull 1 mob without aggrievating the other mobs onto you.

However, in order to successfully use this spell, you -must- have a fairly good understading of positional play i.e. how to pull mobs, and where to pull mobs, as well as mob pathing (the route which mobs take to reach you).

The idea is thus: you wish to pull mobs from a camp one at a time so as to allow you a reasonable chance to solo them, -without- aggrievating and pulling the other mobs onto you. You 'lull' the mobs at the back of the camp, which if successful, will result in you being able to pull a mob from the front of the camp far enough from the other mobs so that its agro radius does not pull the other mobs onto you.

If you do lull the mobs at the front of the camp and pull from the back, then the mobs will simply stampede -THROUGH- the camp, breaking the spell and pulling all of the mobs onto you. Result: one sticky, messy death and a corpse retrieval.

My pipsqueak of concern is that, if memory serves correct, the upgrade of 'lull', 'soothe' is a level 8 spell. Therefore, you are relying on an inadequate spell which has an already large magical resistance rate (% rate at which a mob will resist a spell). I would use this approach with care and perhaps practice on bats and wasps outside Felwithe until you feel comfortable with the basic idea behind the strategy.

Note: If you wish to persue this strategy, then why not group with a level 5+ druid, who should have 'harmony' as one of their spells. 'Harmony' is an AoE (area of effect spell -- rather than single targetted mob) which does -NOT- aggrievate mobs should it fail. In other words, against non-agro mobs such as the bandits, you have a complete failsafe method of pulling these mobs one at a time.

Also, I would -not- rely on Mesmorise at level 6 or roundabouts, especially against 3 mobs. From my own experience (with a Charisma of 103), mesmorise -really- becomes effective at around 10th level. More experienced posters may have a better take and be able to provide more insight.

<yawns> It is late, so there is enough food for thought for you to chew other.

Hope this has been of some help.

Since I've played as multiple characters, I thought I should give my 0.0000003 cp on Greater Faydark. As a High Elf, stick close to the Felwithe gates, For Wood Elves, keep in the newbie grounds. The monsters here should level you up to lvl 5 before being Green. Then Move to orc hill. If you're a High Elf, get bound to Kelethin. Then Hunt in groups on orc hill until lvl 7. At lvl 7, take your group to the Crushbone entrance. DO NOT GO IN!!! Hunt the centurions and occasional oracles and shamen until about lvl 9 or 10. Then head into CB or Steamfont. Well, thats my 0.0000003 cp. Ciao (that's pronounced Chow)

Surviving PK's

As a cleric spending most of his early 20's helping newbies why I sold items in Gfay, watching PK's run rampant on Vallon Zek led to some interesting discoveries of tactics.
First, as the zone discription indicates, it's a forest, that means trees (great insight already) but that also means that the quick casting spell, fade, which acts like a short distance, in zone gate, allows for the offender to get out of your sight, then gate or run for real. This is a hard tactic to counter, but if you can get enough people on the PK, you can usually interrupt their spells.
Also, and a somewhat guarded secret is that if you run toward the zone wall to the left of the Wizzy spires (left if your coming from the Lfay zone or Felwithe, Right if your coming from BB) you can run down into a ditch that hides you from view, known lovingly as the PK ditch, where many PK's go to hide and get bound.
The 5 major assult points for PK's are, the entrance to CB, The Kelethin newbie zone, The bandit camp, Just outside the sight range of Felwithe, and near the wizzy spires themselves.
When shouting about PK's, remember a few things, always give a name(makes it easier for rangers and others to track), A level (8 lvl range maximum to who you can kill), and a position. Sometimes just shouting that information can scare them away, by the thought of getting a group beating.
I hope this helps a bit. Please respond if you have any more tips on this subject.

I created a druid on one of the PvP servers a long time back and wound up being pk'ed instantly in the newbie garden.

I found it was much safer to create a ranger and hunt the quiet areas between kelethin and Faydwer. Why a ranger? Because I used tracking to help me avoid other players and orc cents.

Greater Faydark, or Gfay is home to a verity of creatures for newbies. At Lvs 1 2 3 and 4 you will want to stay close to the city you are by. Kill wasps, pixies, bats, decaying skelletions, and orc pawns. At lv 5 6 7 you can go to Orc hill or an orc camp. They usually contain Orc, Centurions, Pawns, Shamans, and Oracles. ( Note if you are a tank or a wiz, enc, mag.nco class you might be able to go in a group to Orc Hill beacuase you have new spells or skills. There are also occasionally a fae drake hatchling there. con it before you attack but I think they are lv 5-7. WIS based casters DRU,SHM,CLR might want to wait til 5 when they get there new spells. At lv 8 9 10 you can either go to CB (Crushbone) or stay at the camps. Also for lv 10 people they can try BB Butcherblock Mountains) or Lfay Lesser Faydark). Also at lv 8-10 you might try a farere I think madien. Con it first to be sure but I have been able to kill a farere at lv 8. GOOD LUCK!

Get as many CB belts as you can, sell bout half of em for 1pp and keep the rest in your bank.
sooner or later, someone will say they want to buy CB belts and offer nice prices (Ive sold some for 3pp each)

You might want to save some for the quest in kaladim, which is good, espeically for newbie dwarfs as they give you some leather armor as well.

Good luck killing those accursed orcs!

Avoiding death falls
# Aug 28 2000 at 8:02 PM Rating: Default
Kelethin can be a deathtrap for the unwary. A fall from a platform is fatal to lower level characters and a nuisance to most higher levels PCs. Unfortunately, in a game where everyone runs all the time and an over-populated zone where lag can be extremely frustrating, such accidents happen all to often. Thi is especially true on the ramps where most of the problems seem to occur.

To avoid misfortune, approach the lip of the ramp and go to the third person chase perspective. Back the view away until your character can be seen in his or her entirety. Then turn around so that your back is AWAY from the edge. You should be able to see the ramp at the feet of your character. Simply back down the ramps paying attention to stay towards the middle and you will find it almost impossible to fall save from the worst lag interference. Turn back to the front when traversing the platforms themselves or the swinging bridges.

I simply use care, lowering my "head" to peek over the edge when trying to traverse a catwalk. In all honesty, though I am not acrophobic, I hate Kelethin's maze of platforms and catwalks. It is especially nerve-wracking when one is lagging and/or SoWed and running. Fortunately, the map from the EverQuest book helps tremendously.

One major gripe: my newbie Ranger (2nd character) was told to JUMP OFF when asking how to get down (lost in platform maze) - a brand new char... People said no, you won't die... Finally, out of sheer frustration, I jumped. Of course, I died - but I GOT TO THE GROUND and "came back" on the ground. I just was irritated by the childish lack of consideration.

If you need to run to the guards, leave yourself a lot more time than you would in Freeport or Qeynos or anywhere else. They'll let a mob hit you two or three times before they'll start to attack.
Also, I hear that when he's trained near them the POD kills off the guards, not sure if this is frowned on or been fixed, but I'd love to see it. Maybe he's punishing them for incompetence.

What you do is stand at the lift and STAY there.
The guards will run to the tree the lift is attached too and run back to your rescue.
:)
Also dont take on faries cuz the gaurds will not help you at all.
I was running around the City for ages trying to get it off me :)

Story - why the guards are so lax...

[The following is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek story by a wood-elven ranger (adapted from his biography) which explains, among other things, why the Kelethin guards are so lax. - Enjoy]

The problems began with the Fickle Folk, strange mystical beings with god-like powers. We believe them to be extraordinarily powerful pixies because of the tricks they enjoy playing on the common folk. The Fickle Folk destroyed the best defense of Kelethin, namely, being able to fire arrows down upon attackers. Some strange but powerful magic prevented even the bows of our finest rangers from being able to hit foes upon the forest floor from our platforms built for that purpose. One of the Mysterious Mystic Messages would instead appear, "Target is too far above/below you." This could only have been the work of the Fickle Folk. Luckily for us, they also saw fit to keep our trees from burning no matter how many torches you put to the trees.

It did not take long for the orcs to take advantage of the situation. They sent their youngest warriors to taunt and harass us, wandering the forest floor just below our great tree city. Where before none of even their bravest dared show within sight of a platform, their pawns now wandered with impunity. Our dark cousins who chose to flee into the earth began aiding them in our torment of us. They even sent an ambassador to the orc leader Crush, who pretended himself an emperor!

With our best defense stripped from us, the leaders of Faydark’s Champions decided that we must take the fight to the very stronghold of Clan Crushbone to wipe the forest clean of them and end their threat once and for all.

In the beginning, things went well. Orc outposts fell quickly, and no runners escaped to warn Crush of the approaching army. Once inside, the forces charged the hill, killing the centurions in training, and dispatching the trainer. Pawns, centurions, legionnaires, and slavers were put to the bow and blade and grateful slaves freed. The slave taskmaster met his end to the great satisfaction of the slaves whom had been forced to labor under his whip.

The castle itself proved more difficult, though they didn’t have enough warning to throw down the wooden walks over the moat or bar the door. There were more of legionnaires as well as oracles, emissaries, and royal guards. Still, after a few minutes of fighting, the throne room was cleared. "Emperor" Crush was not to be found on his throne, however. He and his inky ambassador had fled to the tower accessed from a passage behind the throne. The ambassador was proving to be a deadly foe. The blue-skinned traitor D’Vinn stabbed the guild master of Faydark’s Champions in the back.

The battle with D’Vinn was a long one, for though the rogue was an ambassador, he was not unfamiliar with the blade. He was a treacherous opponent. Finally, he was overcome, and his black heart cut out to take as proof of his demise. Crushbone was ours! Battered and bloody, our forces were none-the-less victorious. Whoops of victory sounded throughout Crushbone. Unfortunately, it was not to be a lasting victory.

Incredible reports began to pour in from the areas of earlier fighting that orcs were literally falling from the skies to take their slain comrades places! Soon the reports were no longer necessary, as the rain of orcs approached our position. A battle-weary group of elves met with fresh orc replacements. It soon became evident that we could take but not hold Crushbone in the face of an unending sea of fresh opponents. Fate was never this fickle – it must be the work of the Fickle Folk.

Though D’Vinn’s black heart still lay in our pack, his doppelganger slew many. There was no rejoicing in the great tree city that night. A demoralizing blow, the guards of Kelethin to this day make only half-hearted attempts to clear the area of orcs, knowing that they’ll be replaced with fully-armed replacements as a matter of course.

Some say that the Fickle Folk harbor a grudge against rangers to this day for their attempt to secure Crushbone, using another mysterious magic against them called the "nerf". But the rangers fight on.

Unfortuneately, I must agree with this description whole heartedly. Not only have I seen guards fail to react when a mob runs up to them. They have a tendancy to run away and come back before they start attacking. Not only that, I have seen orcs actually in Kelethin, running along the bridges, right past seemingly blind or severly drugged guards. Don't trust them with that last bubble, or you might not make it.

I agree with both of the above posts. I too have seen (and killed :) ) orcs in Kelethin. I have also seen players deliberately train MOBs near the guards. The guards leap forward to kill the MOB then inexplicably turn on PoD. But, unlike the other account, I've seen the guards win. This player (who shall remain unnamed) then waits for PoD to respawn and does it all over again. Sometimes he'll even shout to the zone that he going to start the big fight, come watch. If you need help from the guards, run to Stonehenge lift or orc lift. The guards near PoD lift may be indisposed (hehe).

Actually Tyfin, there is no druid ring in Gfay, what you might be thinking of is the area most elves know as the newbie ruins. The only Druid ring on Faydwer that I'm aware of is in Butcherblock.

There are two Druid Rings on Faydwer, one in Steamfont Mountains and one in the Butcherblock Mountains. The one in GFay is the newbie ruins as posted above. However, there is a Wizard Teleport Spire in Gfay.
