This quest begins with Gerael Woodone who may be found at -180, -395.

You say, 'Hail, Gerael Woodone'

Gerael Woodone says 'It is good to meet you, ______. You, my friend, are an adventurer. The rugged look of you testifies to that. Let me know if you plan to adventure in the Plains of Karana. I have need of a person such as yourself to [deliver a flask].'

You say, 'I will deliver a flask.'

Gerael Woodone says 'That is splendid! I thought I would have to take the long journey to the western Plains of Karana myself. Here you are, my friend. Take this flask of nitrates to a woman named Linaya Sowlin. It will help her crops grow stronger. You will find her farm alongside the road to Highpass Hold. She should pay you well for the delivery. Farewell.'

You receive a Flask of Nitrates. Linaya Sowlin may be found at -3745, -7655 in Western Karana, in a farmhouse. Give her the flask.

Linaya Sowlin says 'Oh thank Tunare you showed up when you did. I was at a nearby merchant house when a fellow dropped a [note] and I picked it up and read it. It talked of the [Unkempt Druids] and before I could read on, the man swiped it from my hands. I ran for dear life, for surely he would kill me for reading the note. I think I lost him in the woods but I am not sure. Please stay with me a while to be sure.'

You say, 'What note?'

Linaya Sowlin says 'The note spoke of the [Unkempt Druids]. I did not get a chance to read it all, only a glimpse. Perhaps the man still has the note. Too bad. I am sure Gerael Woodone of the druids of Surefall Glade should look at it.'

You say, 'What Unkempt Druids?'

Linaya Sowlin says 'The Unkempt Druids are a crazed group of druids and rangers. I learned of them when I was in the Jaggedpine. They are a secret group and aim to keep it that way. They would kill anyone who learned of their whereabouts.'

Draze Slashyn (Level 8) spawns outside:

Draze Slashyn shouts 'Come out of that house, Linaya Sowlin!! I am waiting! It is time for you to die!'
Draze Slashyn says 'I shall chop you down as your people chopped down the beauty of the forests!!'

You have slain Draze Slashyn!

The note identifies as "Contract on Gash," and reads:

To all Unkempt Druids, Jale Phlintoes calls upon you to seek out the Surefall Ambassador to Qeynos. His name is Gash Flockwalker. Reward upon delivery of his head. Long live the green!!

OPTIONAL: You can also kill the "unkempt messenger" (Level 15 mob; spawns in north-central area of West Karana) and loot "Sealed Letter" from its corpse, which reads:

Ursa Tynar,
I shall be visiting you soon. Be sure to tie those two hounds up. They have been in a frenzy lately. Before I visit be sure to rid the territory of that infernal logger Bullin Mane. I will not tolerate the murder of any other pines.

Signed,
Jale Phlintoes

Next, return to Gerael Woodone in Surefall Glade. You MUST turn in the "Tattered Cloth Note" to progress the quest:

Gerael Woodone says 'Oh my!! Our Qeynos Ambassador, Gash, is in danger. Please take the note over to Captain Tillin of the Qeynos Guard then find Gash and inform him [they are trying to kill him]. Go!!'

You receive a different version of "Tattered Cloth Note", which identifies as "Returned Contract on Gash," and reads the same as the first note.

You can also turn in the "Sealed Letter" (if you got one) for the same faction hits (and, sometimes, a Wooden Shield):

Gerael Woodone says, 'So the Unkempt Druids are alive and well. We shall keep a watchful eye out as should you. Take this for your bravery and defense of the Jaggedpine.

You say, 'Who is Jale Phlintoes?'

Gerael Woodone says 'Jale Phlintoes was trained in the ways of the Jaggedpine Treefolk since his birth. He was only eight when his parents were killed by poachers. Young Jale would have had his throat slit also if he were not off fishing at the lake. Unfortunate. The now orphaned Jale was brought up by us druids. After many conflicts with our council, he ran off to start his own sect somewhere in the nearby lands. For his terrorist activities his head now brings a high price.'

You say, 'Who are the Unkempt Druids?'

Gerael Woodone says 'The Unkempt Druids are a radical splinter group of druids. Their beliefs have been contorted by the mad druid [Jale Phlintoes]. It is he who engineers and coordinates the druids' transgressions. From setting lumbermills aflame to murdering any man who dares to wear a bearhide. They must be stopped!! Citizens must learn to understand Tunare's will, not fear it.'

Captain Tillin may be found in South Qeynos on the far side of the arena, at +60, -510. Give him the note.

Captain Tillin says 'So, an assassin has been sent to Qeynos! I shall have my guards keep an eye out for any suspicious looking visitors. As for you... you should speak with the Surefall Glade ambassador. Ambassador Gash is staying at the Lion's Mane Inn here in South Qeynos. Inform him that [an assassin has been sent to kill] him. Do not let the assassin near him!'

Raffel Minnmorn may be found against the wall outside the northwest edge of the Lion's Mane Inn at +445, -35. You'll see this:

Raffel Minnmorn says 'Pardon me. Have you seen a man named Gash Flockwalker? He hails from Surefall Glade.'

Tasya Huntlan says 'Yes. He is staying here at the Lion's Mane Inn, but it is against regulations to give out room numbers. I can tell you that he loves to see the sun rise over the ocean.'

You say, 'Hail, Raffel Minnmorn'

Raffel Minnmorn says 'Hello, friend. I am visiting from the plains. I hope to make a FORTUNE here in Qeynos.'

You say, 'Who is Gash Flockwalker?'

Raffel Minnmorn says 'Gash Flockwalker is a druid from Surefall Glade. I have a special delivery for him.'

You say, 'What special delivery?'

Raffel Minnmorn says 'I shall chop you down as your people chopped down the beauty of the forests!!'

--You have looted a Black Wood Chip.--

Gash Flockwalker is inside the inn at +370, -85, in a room. Go through the main entrance of the inn, turn right, and then left when you see Sissy Huntlan (General Supply vendor). Take another immediate left turn before you enter the hallway and you'll run into the merchant's front desk (Tasla Huntlan, General Supply vendor). Take the hallway to your right until you see a wanted poster with a face on it. He is behind the door to the right of that poster (your right if you are looking at the poster).

Gash Flockwalker says 'Hey... he dropped something. You should most likely take it to Gerael Woodone in Surefall Glade. Tell me what it is.'

You say, 'He dropped a black wood chip.'

Gash Flockwalker says 'That is the mark of an Unkempt Druid. Long ago there was a tree in Norrath we called the Great Tunarbos. Legend says it spawned all the woodlands of Norrath. Many centuries ago, long before the Combine Era, the Great Tunarbos was burned to the ground by unknown means. The ancient rangers kept what little of the great tree they could find. To make it short, all Unkempt Druids now carry burned wood chips to represent the great tree. They are not real. Take any black wood chips to Gerael Woodone in Surefall Glade.'

You say, 'An assassin has been sent to kill you.'

Gash Flockwalker says 'What!!? Must be an Unkempt Druid Assassin nearby!! Find him and slay him. I am sure he stands to make a FORTUNE! I believe the assassin may be carrying some sort of [black wood chip].'

You say, 'What black wood chip?'

Head back to Surefall Glade, and turn in the Black Wood Chip to Gerael Woodone to complete the quest.

Gerael Woodone says 'So the Unkempt Druids are alive and well. We shall keep a watchful eye out as should you. Take this for your bravery and defense of the Jaggedpine.'

Timing on Triggered Mobs
# Nov 05 2007 at 8:39 AM Rating: Decent
What seems to have made this quest difficult and confusing is the timing of the triggered mobs. From the first hailing of Gareal Woodone down to "You receive 15 copper from Linaya Sowlin", this quest goes exactly as the walkthrough above. At that point, I ran outside Linaya Sowlin's house, just as the post by panthermartin suggested. Draze was NOT outside, and I began to wonder if anyone had really completed this quest. But after about 20 seconds, he spawned, and I killed him (conned blue to my 11 druid) before he started his speech. I think the designers intended for you to do the dialogue with Linaya Sowlin first, then run right outside and kill him. But, again, following the suggestion by panthermartin to forego the dialogue with Sowlin worked just fine...I don't know if he would have popped if I wouldn't have done that.

Incidentally, Linaya Sowlin omits the line about staying with her for a while if you kill Draze before speaking to her.

Captain Tillan was NOT at +60, -510...another Guildmaster from the Warrior's Guild was. I just used the Find function to find Captain Tillan...he was nearby, on a second-floor balcony of the Warrior's Guildhouse.

When I went to +445, -35, Raffel Minnmorn was NOT there. I started to think I was on a wild goose chase, and went into the Lion's Mane Inn. Gash Flockwalker was where the walkthrough said he'd be. I was just about to start the dialog with Flockwalker when the "Pardon me, have you seen a man named Gash Flockwalker..." lines started scrolling by. I ran back to +445, -35, and Raffel Minnmorn was now standing there. I was low on manna, and didn't want to start the fight, so I took the Raffel dialogue up to just short of "What special delivery?", and sat down to meditate. He started walking off before I got to full manna, so I had to hail him a second time. He got to the front of the Lion's Mane Inn before I stopped him...and who walked past us but none other than Gash Flockwalker?! Raffel didn't respond to him, though so I finished meditating. I stood, and tried to trigger his attack by walking through all his dialogue starting with a fresh hail. It didn't work, nothing I could do would provoke him. I started the fight, and waxed him even though we were both within arm's reach of a couple of Queynos guards (they didn't interfere). Raffel also conned blue to my 11 druid. I wondered where Gash had wandered off to, but decided to start my search in his room in the inn. He was there, and the rest of the quest went as described above.

Again, I think the designers meant for you to see Captain Tillman, then go to Gash Flockwalker in the Inn, then overhear Raffel's spywork. But as you can see, there are other ways to complete the quest.

There may be an unlisted reward for the quest completion. I noticed a Leather Cloak (AC4) in my inventory at the conclusion, and didn't remember looting that from either mob.
Missing FIGHT INFO and GASH DIALOGUE
# Oct 17 2007 at 12:11 AM Rating: Decent

I did not get a say on screen from Raffel Minnmorn when I neared the Lion's Mane Inn, so I went directly to Gash (which I believe is the right order since the guard tells you to inform him immediately). He basically said go find and kill the assassin, but hinted by having the word FORTUNE in capitals when he was talking (Raffel has FORTUNE capitalized when you hail him). I used this page of Allah to find the assassin's name and found him on the north west edge of the inn (outside) against a wall. Location was "446.03, -34.64, 3.75." I got him to respond to "who is gash flockwalker" but could not get him to attack with "what special delivery." So I had to start the fight myself. I don't know if a passing guard would attack you for starting it or not but I did not have that happen. Here's each of the attack lines on my chat window during the fight, including all types of attacks I received (yes some occured a few times, but you don't need every single time):

>You feel your skin singe as the burst of fire hits you. You have taken 12 points of damage.
>Your feet have become entwined. You have taken 10 points of damage.
>You are slammed by an intense gust of wind. You have taken 10 points of damage. (This spell makes you jump back about 5 feet or so, but you are still rooted).
>You are surrounded by flickering flames.
>You have taken 3 damage from Flame Lick by Raffel Minnmorn. (repeats per spell tick)
>Raffel Minnmorn feels a little better. (He heals himself with a weak heal).

Those were all the spells I had cast on me during the fight. Drops were "a black wood chip" and "a rusty dagger." Not once was I hit from his dagger, but the fight only lasted about a minute (I was a lvl 10 druid using swarm dot spell and flickering flame dot, average hit on my part was 11-12 with a delay of 22).

Gash Flockwalker says "Hey... he dropped something. You should most likely take it to Gerael Woodone in Surefall Glade. Tell me what it is."

Then I went back to Gash (since he said "tell me what it is") and said "he dropped a black wood chip", to which he responded the same description of the black wood chip if you ask "what black wood chip" when talking to him initially. So off to Surefall Glade I went.

Gash Flockwalker's location is "368.85, -86.79, 3.75." If you go thru the main entrance of the inn, turn right, and then left when you see Sissy Huntlan, General Supply vendor. Take another immediate left turn before you enter the hallway and you'll run into the merchants front desk (Tasla Huntlan, general supply vendor). Take the hallway to your right until you see a wanted poster with a face on it, he is behind the door to the right of that poster (your right if your looking at the poster).

Yea I had to repeat this one time to get it right. Once you hand the note in, go outside immediately because Draze will run quickly (I caught him just as he started running and I casts a DD to stop him, but I also waited about 20 seconds because his dialogue of "come out right now" didn't come up, and I was waiting for it). Do NOT say anything about the note or any other dialogue until you kill Draze, apparently that "may" make him de-pop, as another poster said. Hope this helps all who have had problems with him. And FYI he conned DB to my lvl 10 DRU, and casted druid spells such as flickering flame.

Gash's room in the Lion's Mane Inn is at /Loc 365.45 -86.70 3.13
Do a search for Sissy Huntlan and you will find it. Then go behind the counter and follow the hallways after the picture then the wanted sign you will find his room door. Don't go up the steps it's at the bottom of those.turn left and there you go.

Gerael Woodone is at /loc -184.94 -393.87 3.13
In the tree in Surefall.

As a Wood Elf druid I went to surefall as soon as I reached lvl 15 so that I had the surefall glades ring spell.....bound myself in the Queynos part where you give the ticket for the statue guy. then had karana Ring Spell loaded as well.

I believe the pop time for the assassin is 1 hour.....I only did this part 1 time......at the end of 1:30 I had done it twice.

I did this quest 3 times in 1:30 it was fun.....got a level and I was in good condition....teehee...

More about Raffel Minnmorn
# Jul 11 2005 at 1:19 PM Rating: Decent
Anyone level 15 or higher (which is when I did it, being the first level I can use Ring of Surefall and Karana) can walk all over the mobs here. Draze Slashyn is green at 15 and Raffel Minnmorn is light blue. He heals himself and casts flame lick and burst of fire.

Raffel stood in front of the Inn (loc 170, -50 next to an invenstigator) for some time. I spoke with Gash first, then when I came back out Raffel had went in to speak with Tasya Huntlan the girl behind the Inn desk. A red-con 'a furtive figure' arrived and stood beside Tasya behind the desk, facing her while she spoke with Raffel. He didn't respond to hails. Raffel never responded to 'What special delivery?' but he did respond to 'Who is Gash Flockwalker?' as stated above. After unsuccessful attempts at getting him to attack, I initiated combat and grabbed my Black Wood Chip.

My reward for this quest was 8gp 3sp, some exp, the faction changes, and a Cracked Staff. Woohoo!

problem with flask to Linuya?
# May 08 2005 at 2:11 PM Rating: Decent
Seems like this might be broken. I gave the flask to Linuya but the diaglog didnt continue. the umkempt druid popped outside, but she never asked for help. While I tried to continue the diaglog line with the 'what note' question, the druid de-popped. I'd be curious to know if anyone had this problem? Or if the diaglog is just off, the killing the umkempt will keep the quest intact.

Gerael's faction?
# Jul 16 2002 at 9:59 AM Rating: Default
I'm an agnostic Dark Elf and need to talk to Gerael to get the nitrates (for the regurgitonic quest) but am presently dubious with him.

I read somewhere that killing gnolls in blackburrow helps and sure enough killing gnolls raises some factions with several groups but after killing what must be at least 100 gnolls I am still dubious to Gerael.

Is anyone positive on just which faction needs to be raised to talk with Gerael?
RE: Gerael's faction?
# Sep 17 2002 at 11:27 AM Rating: Decent
Gereal is on the Jaggedpine Treefolk faction, but the adjustment for killing gnolls is very small. Going from dubious to amiable requires an awful lot of dead gnolls.
RE: Gerael's faction?
# Dec 04 2002 at 7:58 PM Rating: Decent
It may take an awful lot of dead gnolls, but what a satisfying feeling it is to see all those noisy, grubby, obnoxious brutes laying at my feet.
