The Butcherblock Mountains are the land of the dwarves. This rugged mountain range serves as the gateway into Norrath for the dwarves of Kaladim with its citizens, guards, and vendors well-represented throughout the area.

The Greater Faydark can be found to the East while Dagnor's Cauldron lies to the South. These mountains also connect to both the Ocean of Tears and Timorous Deep as the docks in Port Faydwer service both oceans.

They've settled the great debate about hunting guards for XP by making them not give XP anymore. They still drop their axes and other loot, and you still take a faction hit, but sadly, no XP.

If you're an old-time player and ever made a dorf toon and levelled it up in Butcherblock Mountains...

Make a new dorf toon and zone out into BBM. Experience the wave of melancholic nostalgia. Be sure you have sounds and music turned on so you can hear the unforgettable theme music as you approach Kaladim and other key spots. Listen to the sounds of the forest and the night. Head along the trail to the Crossroads and hear the Guard warn "Danger! Bandits have been seen on the roads!"

It will all come back to you in a rush!

level 1-15 is not truly correct.

Although this is an old zone and most folks
don't want to bother with it, there a few
spawns for those in the 35 to 40ish level range.

Named Dwarf NPCs at the huts.
-one near chessboard, several near druid ring along the shore,
one at a guard shack near the gob. warrior camp,
and a couple more scattered around.
Loot sucks for their level (around 35) but there's
several of them and this day and age
I am sure they are not camped, so great if one wants to
quietly solo for awhile.

It was a great place to solo as a druid when I was
in that level range.

There is one draw back. The faction hit.
Its something to do with Dwarf town, but if you don't plan on going
into Kaladim it doesnt matter I guess.
It is NOT the same faction as the guards, so they will still
love you.

The zone was meant for 1 to 15.
The guards and npc's aren't considered as leveling mobs. They are supposed to actually be guards and npc's.

Does that mean the NPCs should not be hunted?

I don't mean the guards, just the dwarf NPCs.
They seem to be there with no purpose except being there.

I know this is pretty much a "dead zone" and not a really
important topic and for all regards the zone is for the level range posted.

I am curious if that is against protocol to kill these
NPCs.

Personally, I find no fault in it.

Some of them actually, should NOT be hunted. The ones I am referring to in particular are the two guards that stand at the crossroads. Once they are killed, they won't respawn unless the zone is rebooted. This is an old bug that has persisted for many years but never fixed. That explains why many of you reading this now are saying to yourselves "There were never any guards at the crossroads. What is this guy talking about?" The reason why you may never have seen guards there is that they don't reboot the zone often and merely complaining about the absence of the guards usually isn't enough to convince them to do a reboot. It usually only gets rebooted after a scheduled patch or if some other bug that affects the stability of the zone is reported. If they aren't going to fix the respawn bug then they need to increase the level of those guards to 100 so it takes a guild raid to kill them to keep casual hunters away. If they fix the respawn bug then fine, go ahead and kill them to your hearts content. NPC's that are required to finish quests being killable is another problem. Nothing sucks more than finishing up a long and difficult quest then finding out the NPC you need to do the final turn in has been killed by another player for XP and won't respawn again for several hours or even days. Generic NPC's who are just there to add flavor to a zone that do not interact with players in any meaningful way should remain OK to kill.

You guys are both right. The zone listing should say 1-15, because Allakhazam's listings are pretty generic anyways. There are level 55 mobs in Paludal.

And yet, there is a camp of goblins in this zone, enraged and crazed goblins, that contains lvl 23-26 goblins, iirc. And yes, the dwarves were a must-quad spot for druids in their 30s.

The point is, replying to 2 year old posts is cool.

I was at the Butcherblock LDON camp today to do an adventure (yes, some folks still do LDONs!), and clicked on the NPC labelled "Adventure Recruiter". She offered me a mission involving rescuing SIX NPCs. I thought that was odd, but asked for a Collection instead, and was told she didn't have anything suitable for my group (three level 54s). Then I noticed there are TWO "Adventure Recruiters" in this camp. Xyzelauna Tu`Valzir gave my group an assignment, no problem. But I had been talking to Alinai Kaneriti (Adventure Recruiter), and upon hailing her I found she seems to be looking for a mini-raid of up to 12 characters. Has anyone done this mission? I couldn't find Alinai mentioned anywhere in a quick net search.

the poisoned flunder ---> raiding freeport
# Oct 12 2005 at 9:44 AM Rating: Decent
The poisoned flunder is a instance zone task starting in butcherblock. you will need to be 3 people in group to get the task. you will get it by hailing mister squishy (or somthing like that) you will find him on the shore next to the big ship just north of the docks. i cant remember the dialog he says but to get mission you just say "interested" and a monster select window will show. you can choose between dark elf rogue, gnome cleric, troll warior and an erudit enchanter. after class select you all need to stand near the gnome and say "board". that will transport you to an instance zone of East freeport. After you enter you will need to choose your skills and use your monster aa'a. get vindow up by pressing "V". After this you need to check if your task is updated before you continue. if you do not see the 45min timer or the loot counter up, the mission leader will need to zone out to fix the bug. do this by hailing the gnome on the dock and say "cast off" once the mission leader has zoned out and back in the bug should be fixed (but always check). if the bug isnt fixed your loots wont count and you wont be able to finish task and get xp. The 45min timer will first start with first kill or first chest looted. You will need 30 plundered treasure to get the chest to spawn and to finish task. the chest will first spawn after 45 min though. I belive that the item given was supose to get better as you get more plundered treasure, but it seems that it dosnt. so far i have only seen to different items in the chest, and it seem to be random what item it is. one item is a pair of boots for rangers, shamans, rogues and berserkers. Stats will be added. the other item is an aug with saves on useable by all. stats will be added here aswell. So unless they change it there is no difference in loot between getting 30 and 100.(and yes i have tryed to get more than 100.)
I have found 44 chests in the zone, and they all have a plundered treasure in them. ALL chests can be taken without agro if you are real good as a rogue and use your hide and sneak buttons well. Its all about where to stand and how quick you are to hide again after opening chests and after looting. The optimal way to do this (if you are a full grp) is to have 1 cleric, 1 enchanter, 1 warior and 3 rogues. 1 rogue goes solo and get all 44 chests, while the others kill and loot.i will start by telling about the kill team: The warior should pull. the cleic can use grp temp as a group heal. chanter remember to haste melee's and be fast to mezz. rogues use backstab .ignore the tavern to the left of docks and the secret passage. start with the guards and fishermen on the dock. Then move to the building to the right. kill building and move towards the intersection. there you move towards the gate..dont take the first house on way to gate there will be 7 mobs in there its a waiste of time... you will all die if you take it. take the next house instead and gate after that. move back to intersection and continue deeper into town. The rogue should start with the chest by the fisherman visible from the dock where you enter, then go and take the chests in the secret area. and then the ones on the dock (under the bridge, behind the tavern) then move in the tavern and loot those in there. then you just follow th kill team (with a few detours) they should have cleared out some houses by the time you are done with the secret passage and the tavern. so should be no big problem to get most of them.Ones you have opened a chest it will rot after about 7 min so dont let an opened chest be for to long. You can open chests while you have agro but you wont be able to loot. die and come back and loot it later. Remember that if you die you will simply apear right back on the dock where you started, and you wont loose any xp by dying. it is duable. with a full group we got 106 in the 45 min, not that it changed the loot we got.
Have fun

anyone know anything about the new instanced task missions to unrest? i didnt like 4 of these tasks. and it seems to be decent xp for 60+ groups and at the end of task you can random an item from an ancient chest that pops when you complete the mission. had a prim/secon orb that had mana regen+1 and some stats 3 times but the first time i got from chest a Blasphemers eye , regen+3 damage shield +3 and some good stats for range. so my question is if anyone knows about these tasks , is it the same item everytime and then the eye is the rare drop? also i heard there was an instanced mission to Mistmoore as well but i cant find the npc any ideas? plz post
strange corpses
# Apr 29 2004 at 2:55 AM Rating: Decent
Today, while I was hunting some dwarfs at the dock with my dru, I found some strange corpses.

Those were some kind of mobs' named Captain Wiggins, Mad Jack and Lilia the Vain.
The most strange thing about them was, when you consider the corpses, you can see the msg telling you the resurrection time! Burning with curiosity, I tried to rez them with my cleric but nothing happened.
Those corpses contain Nodrop bandit sashes, but you can never loot them.

I'm dying with curiosity, someone plz tell me, what are they for???

I got on with levitate, nothing there. The boat does nothing and is very ornate, kind of like the shuttle textures though it is a large boat with a sail.

I thought maybe it came with gates of discord, for some reason?

LDoN Warning
# Sep 20 2003 at 11:36 PM Rating: Decent
(I'll catch hell for this.)

Since LDoN, people have been taking to congregating right near the BB/GFAY zone entrance (due to the placement of the adventurer mobs). I mean a ton of people.

Those of us without the latest video cards are advised to turn left and skirt around them, else you'll find a good deal of lag (anywhere from an annoyance to a show-stopper on the very minimum-req's).

This is just like in the earlier days when the little tunnel between the Commonlands and the Desert in Antonica would always be packed.

There will also be constant trumpetting of "65 beast LFA", "40-47 group looking for pullers, buffers", or the like. That's simply an annoyance, however, not something that can burn up as much as a half an hour for the most unlucky souls.

It'd be nice if people could at least move to the other side of that copse of trees. Out of sight is out of mind in the realm of video-card performance in this case.

I have a question about the shuttles to FV. They get half way through the route to TD and then they zone back to BB. Are all boats doing this on all servers? I wouldn't care if it weren't for the drachnids (I prefer driders) that are by the tunnels that lead to DL. Anyway, when, if ever, will the boats and shuttles be fixed to work properly again?

They recently removed the translocator in Butcher Block, but did not fix the boats to Timorous Deep. Only 2 or the 4 boats will take you there. The other 2 will get stuck just before zoning into TD.

Irritation
# Apr 23 2003 at 11:29 AM Rating: Default
Why can't our chars see to the side or in back, they could easily set up keys for this if they wanted to, it would be a great help when sitting. Why do they say stats go up from exp?, when it's your level that determines how high stats can go. As soon as you lvl and med your meditate goes up five more points, then stays there until you go to next level. I think there a lot of changes they could make that would make play a lot more enjoyable. If exp is so important why don't you get exp by dying, if you do it enough you can get better at it. Why all the old fashioned "Gotchas", hitting a creature only to have another on the other side of the hill come and attack you also? This is what you might call the "Irritation Factor". This is something companies put in games, because they think irritation is fun. Let's face it, they came up with a good idea, a world with continents, cities, etc. It's a game for enjoyment, why all the frustation, they don't have to make it easy, but they could make it better, I don't think they have a lot of imagination, or smarts or something. Either make it more realistic or don't make it realistic at all. Why have things half way? Why make a game that forces you endure bullcrap and make you pay to buy it, then pay to endure it? Come on guys, get on the ball, we're paying you're salaries, make things better and more enjoyable.

All I have to say is...you should have seen it in the first year...or maybe you did and have forgotten. Things have been made a great deal better over the years.
RE: Irritation
# Apr 30 2003 at 2:38 PM Rating: Default
Well, what to say to this rant. First of all, you are entitled to your opinion. Second, you are not alone in your opinion that the game could be made better. As a matter of fact, the developers are constantly trying to make the game better. Thats what those patches are for. Thats why you have to pay monthly to play. Its to pay for improvements. Third, I agree that they dont have to make it easy. If it was then I wouldnt play. I would just load something like Starcraft or somesuch and play that. This game is hard, it is supposed to be, unless you take the shortcut and do things like twink or powerlevel, then hey thats your choice. No one is "forced" to play this game. You go to a store, make a decision to buy the game, then make another decision to load it on your computer, then make another series of decisions loggin on and such, just to play. Sooo, no one is force to play. If someone doesnt like the game the way it is, THEN QUIT, UNINSTALL THE GAME, SELL IT, and move on. Go buy something more your speed like a board game. It is easy to criticize, but its useless to do so, unless you have a solution to the problem. Remember though, you do have a right to your opinion, just as others have the same right to say your opinion is "Irritating".

#REDACTED, Posted: Feb 25 2003 at 1:39 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Let me tell you about an idea i had one day. I was running through Grater faydark and i had accedently attacked a nexus at the wizzy spires. Needless to say that i was killed Instantly. I was extreamly mad because i lost my exp. Through my hatered i studied the creature and i devised the most extravagant scheme ever. I was wondering if my fellow Citizens of norrath would aid me. Darkies and Lighties come together in a mass horde to take one down. "What's in it for me" a person might ask. Well i think that not only the feeling you get from uniting with all of the inhabitants of norrath to squash a common evil but a great possibilty of an uber pay off and Extream exp or maybe nothing just a cold hard defeat.I am not really sure if they drop anything or if they even give exp. They are most likely the least killed Npc in the game. I have heard of one or two being killed but to my knowlage no loot has ever been identified. There are only a couple of reasons why i have not been able to find the loot items either 1. The uber guild who took one down came up with an awsome item that they dont want to get nerfed because of 1000000 crying lowbies saying its too powerfull so they did not add it to new item lists 2. None of them have ever been killed 3. Normal Loot for lvl of mob 4. No loot :( Now i am not really sure yet of the master plan but i am thinking along the lines of a massive head on attack group attack at random with no aperant stratagey.A person could even make a mule char and lvl to 5 or 6 toe just for this battle.Toe to Toe with the Unchecked Evil of the world. Or i have got a more methodical aproach. Either way i could be just stupid or really tired but that is my idea and i am willing to set up shop on any server. e-mail me at massive_nexus_strike@YHAOO.COM if you have any ideas, you want to join (( lvl is of no importance 1-65 doesnt matter Class either warriors clerics shaman monks i am in need of warm bodies :) )) or you just want to flame about how stupid i am either way i will welcome your emails and i will try my very best to email you back .No matter what it says. There are two aqua goblin camps just south of dock area -- camp 1 is closest to docks, camp 2 is a little further down. Camp 1 has 5 goblin spawns, while camp 2 has 6... spawn time is about 4-5 minutes, so that gives time to med, heal, practice sense heading while waiting between spawns -- perfect timing though if you are lucky enough to have both camps to yourself.

Could probably solo these camps at level 10 if you are twinked and can heal yourself -- level 11 is no problem because all should be light blue by then and will not gang up on you (greens will attack anyone who gets too close). Will still get experience, but only minor amount, until level 12 or 13.

Faction increases are for Storm Guard (Dwarf Warriors), Emerald Warriors (Wood Elves), and Gemchoppers (Gnome Warriors) -- good if you need to get by guards in any of these zones.

As far as loot, you want to save the goblin heads, steins, backbones, and blood if you are farming for cash. Even if the goblins are camped, you may want to come down and check bodies because not everyone knows what to save. Each goblin drops 4 arrows all the time, so this is a good place for archers to stock up. They are also a good source for crude bronze needed in dwarf, gnome, and elf newbie armor quests -- just ask if you can loot, because most people camping here leave these items to rot. With one camp, you should be able to loot about 100-150pp worth of items per hour.

To get the most out of your hunting experience -- if you are farming for plat -- you should come with as many open inventory spots as possible because once you get a camp, you won't want to leave. Backbones and blood stack, but steins and heads do not. Should also have some space in the bank, as you do not necessarily want to sell the loot in Kaladim (unless you are a dwarf).

Once you can handle no more, either you can go back home if you live close (your race/guild will almost always give you the best prices), or head to the Bazaar -- you will probably want to go shopping anyway. Too many people run to the docks to sell what they have, but that guy probably offers relatively little in return. In addition to faction and charisma, price will depend on what the merchant has in stock, and if he already has alot of goblin loot he won't be offering as much (once I was selling to a vendor in Felwithe, ran to the bank to get more, and when I returned he was giving me less than before -- if you can, sell as much as possible before clicking the 'done' button).

Anyway, at the bazaar you should see if anyone is selling a stein cheap -- crude stein (CHA+15) runs about 10-15pp, while an opal encrusted stein (CHA+25) usually costs 20-25pp (prices may vary according to server, time of day, etc.). Sell just enough loot to buy one of these, and then unload your bags. There is a noticeable difference in pricing; for example, my Barbarian (with bad CHA) was only offered 3.5 pp per item from the 'amiable' dwarves at the warrior guild, while she eventually got 4.6 pp in the bazaar after buying a couple of steins -- that extra plat adds up if your bags are full (a difference of 150pp for me at the time).

Happy hunting.

The best strategy here is to camp the aqua goblins. You should be able to kill them at level 13 or so. They drop 4 things that are very valuable, the blood and backbone (both stackable) the heads and the stein. If you have good faction/CHA, you can sell them each for about 4.5 PP. I've spent many an hour camping there. You could easily pick up about 250 PP in a couple hours. After spending time here, perhaps you should head to the bazaar. . .

The location of these two camps are between the docks and the dwarf houses (#1 and #16 on the EQ Atlas map).

Good Luck getting a camp. But, if you can its a great way to get some pp AND faction. Most things conned light blue to my Necro at lvl 13 (the only time I got the camp).
