Does an off line trader consume food and drink? I'm going to be traveling for a while and I want to leave my trader up offline. My worry is that she'll starve and won't be able to move when I get back.

Thanks in advance,

Valentyne Hawkes

Also, weight has no bearing in the bazaar.

In the beginning of Bazaar trading, food and drink were consumed by the trader. This was quite frustrating because those commodities may have been what the trader wished to sell. Hearing that concern, management programmed that while in trader mode, traders neither eat nor drink. Note: This is true of players both on-line and off-line.
Some Bazaar Tips

Some Bazaar Tips: Answers to common questions about the bazaar for the new player.

My first draft of this document when I first started playing with it some months back included a warning about zoning out of the bazaar loaded down with plat and heavy satchels. But thanks to a patch a little while back we no longer have to worry about carrying lots of coin around in the world. Thank goodness! And as for the satchels most players will not be so loaded down by them that they can’t move at all, as used to be the case with the coin. If you do find yourself encumbered in this way though, buffs and especially mounts can be a big help. Even with the nice new weightless coins, it’s kinda a pain to zone/gate/port out of the bazaar with the wrong bags so it’s still best to remember to do your banking first, especially if you’ve been up as trader.

Important NPCs

There are several NPC merchants in the bazaar, many have some very handy inventory including trade-skill items and spells, but I will only list the most important.

Tekrama sells the trader satchels. Those are the bags you need to put the things in that you want to sell while in trader mode. Tek stands next to the entrance that leads to the Red Dragon Hall. That’s where you will find all the traders as well as some very handy bankers. That’s where you go to set up a trader of your own using the /trader command.

Caerlyna (Bag-to-Token Trades) will trade most containers you’d want to sell for tokens that you can put in a trader satchel. Otherwise ofc, containers don’t fit in containers. When a player buys a satchel token from a trader they take it to Caerlyna and give it to her and she will give them the container. This is a free service she provides to all players.

Sylisa Cogsworthy sells augmentation distillates and solvents. She stands next to an augmentation pool otherwise known as an Augmentation Sealer. They are located in the first room to the right as you zone in from PoK. Very handy if you need to add or switch augs after a purchase. However, oddly enough, she doesn’t sell the gem glue solvents, so if you’re planning on doing anything with the trio jewelry you'll need to bring some with you from PoK. Also located in this room are a Loom, Pottery Wheel, Oven, Kiln, and Forge.

Worg Master Krellog, located in the central merchant area will upgrade the free but slow Worg mounts that some players got as a promotional.

Stable Ward Kyle is the one you want to talk to if you want to move your promotional barding to a faster horse.

Stable Hand Brack & Kaye sell the bridals that summon horse mounts.

The 4 guys standing around in the back stable will trade old bridals for bags of platinum that you can sell. You will get most but not all the plat it cost you to buy your bridal.

Communication:

Don’t be shy about asking questions over /occ while in the bazaar. Most people will not withhold assistance if they can provide it. That said it’s often the case that most people in the bazaar are afk. (away from the keyboard) So patience and understanding is highly appropriate if no one answers right away, or at all for that matter. Some questions may best be answered though through more populated channels like /general, so it might be best to try there first for any non-trade related issues.

The chat channel /occ is often used for advertising by traders. This is completely acceptable within the bazaar as long as it doesn’t amount to spam. Let some time go by between ad messages to share the channel with other traders and reduce spam, and try not to step on any conversation that may be taking place on the channel. Live auctions however should be conducted on /auction, though it is both acceptable and a good idea to announce your auction in /occ.

The problem with communicating with traders and buyers is that they are often afk. Mail is practically useless because Universal Chat is usually down for traders who stay for long periods in the one zone. Usually Universal Chat only stays functional if you zone frequently so a lot of traders never bother with mail. It is possible to leave messages with a trader though if they use ‘tell windows.’ You can set ‘use tell windows’ in options. What happens is that instead of your tells getting lost in all the scroll from other channels and game events in main chat, they open automatically in a new dedicated chat window. The tell window will then stay on the recipients screen until they crash, log, or close it manually. It greatly increases the odds that a trader will actually see a tell sent to them when they are afk. I’ve had entire conversations with people through tell windows when neither one of us were at the keyboard at the same time. I’ve also made a lot of transactions I couldn’t have arranged otherwise. That said, it’s still possible to miss a tell. When a trader goes link dead before getting a chance to see them for example. Or sometimes, when I’m closing windows generated by plat-seller spam I’ll close a tell-window I didn’t mean to close by accident. I’ve missed a hand-full of messages that way. But it’s a problem everyone comes to understand and work around and using tell windows while in trader mode is highly useful. So don’t get too discouraged if a trader doesn’t reply to a tell right away. There’s still a chance they might get back with you if they get your message soon enough.

Commands:

/baz is the command that opens the search window. That’s the tool you use when you’re shopping to find what you’re looking for as well as the player selling it. If you want to see a description of a particular item listed, right click and hold on the name of that item in the list and an item description window will open up for you. If you are trading you will want to check your competitors prices as often as possible using the Bazaar Search Window. Prices can change frequently with supply and you will want to keep up or you could be wasting much of your time. A very useful button called ‘hide traders’ will make all traders invisible, greatly reducing lag. When you select an item you want from the search window and hit the ‘find trader’ button, you will normally target that trader, generate a ‘find’ path to follow, as well as turn in that traders’ general direction. The trader will also become visible to you so you can open a transaction with them. (A right click on the trader’s name in the search window gives the same effect as hitting the ‘find trader’ button.) When you are done, follow the same process with a new trader and the old trader will vanish and the new one will then become visible. If you don’t use ‘hide trader’ then you will often have difficulty targeting a trader who is packed in among many other traders so ‘hide trader’ is useful for more than just lag reduction. On the occasion that you ‘can’t easily locate’ a trader, you will at least get a ‘directional spin’ to follow. Just head in the direction the spin points you in ‘till you come parallel to an opening or stop at a wall and hit it again for a new spin. Rinse and Repeat. When you get close enough to the trader a normal path may be generated, if not you will usually find the trader anyway when you suddenly walk into the room they are in to see them targeted and flashing in the distance. In the search window notice the filters, play with them to see how they work. If you get a warning that your search found more than 200 items then you may need to use filters to narrow that search or you’ll possibly be missing the best offers.

/trader is the command you use to enter trader mode but you need to be standing on a trader platform in the correct area of the bazaar for it to work. The baz side is otherwise known as the Red Dragon Hall. You need to have bought special ‘trader satchels’ from an NPC called Tekrama though too. Buy your satchels then put all the stuff you want to sell into them and go to a trader platform. Using /trader opens the Bazaar Vendor window where you can input, change or remove prices. Once your prices are added then the ‘Begin Trader’ button will put you in trader mode. You don’t have to put a price on everything you carry around in your trader satchel. For example most traders carry some kind of food and drink. (though you eat far less while in trader mode than you normally do) You will especially want to carry food and drink to eat if you are also selling food and drink. Otherwise you might just eat what you are trying to sell. But just because you put something in a satchel doesn’t mean you have to put a price on it. If you’re not seriously trying to sell it don’t price it. Some people mistakenly assign an exorbitant price to the things they don’t really want to sell, or claim they don’t want to sell, but it’s really unnecessary and it’s incredibly rude. It’s rude first because someone carrying sufficient plat might mistakenly buy something of very little value. It’s easy to do this when over tired, you think you’ve selected one item and you’ve actually selected another. I’m sure there are many who “accidentally miss-price” items to take advantage of just that possibility, but it’s rude also because everything that gets a price gets listed in the search results which in turn become clogged with ridiculously useless listings. It takes extra time and attention for players to sort through and all for no good reason. There is no legitimate reason to put bone chips, or misty picnics or water flasks and the like up for thousands or hundreds of thousands of plat. Anyone who does isn’t going to win trust or respect.

/barter is used to open the “barter window.” When you do so you will see a list of all the items you are carrying, including anything you have equipped. Left click on an item listed there and it is added in the text input search window just below it. (or you can just type an item name in) Hit the “search” button right next to it and it will give you a list of players, if any, that are buying your item, how much/what they are offering for it, and what quantity they are looking for. If you leave the text input empty and hit “search” you will get a sampling of all items up for sale, though not a complete list if there are a lot of buy lines out there. If an item-for-item exchange is listed, it will be noted as such. You select that buy line with a left click and the item being offered appears in the “Item Compensation for selected Buy Line” window. It’s pretty unusual to see item-for-item trades in /barter in my experience. You can use /barter to search buy lines from anywhere in The Bazaar.

/buyer is the command used to actually set up a buyer. It opens the “Barter Buyer Window.” You must stand on a platform in the Blue Griffin Hall to set yourself up as a buyer. Down in the lower left corner of the “Barter Buyer Window” is a text input window and search button. To set up a buy line, first you must find and select an item from the list of all tradable items in the game. (Btw: this is a good way to get a link for, and look at a tradeable item you don’t actually have access to otherwise.) Type in the word silk for example and you will get a list of every item with ‘silk’ as part of its name. From “Air Arachnid Silk” to “Swirling Silk Bracer” and more. The results are so large that in order to make a buy line for spiderling silk for example, it has to be repeated and more specific because it wasn’t listed in the general search for ‘silk’ at all. Once found, to make a buy line select “spiderling silk” with a left click. With the item highlighted it’s time to set up compensation, or what you are offering, for the each silk. If you are offering another item for exchange you must have the item on you. It will show up in the “Your Inventory” list. Select say, bone chips from “Your Inventory” and hit “Add” and a “quantity’ window will open. (Hitting “Remove” will remove an item from the compensation list.) Set the quantity to ‘1’ and accept and it is added to the compensation window. Then just set the count down in the count window below that and hit the “Create Buy” window. The ‘count’ bty, is the amount of spiderling silks you want to get in total. You will then be trading one bone chip for every spiderling silk. (Once you hit “Start Barter” ofc.) If you’d rather just buy the silks instead of setting up an item as compensation, set the amount of coins, (platinum, gold, silver, or copper) you want to trade for each silk in the little windows provided, along with your count. Hit the Start Barter button at the lower right and you’re done. Just make sure you set your offer higher than the NPC merchants already give for the item or you are going to be wasting your time. All the buy lines you set up will be listed under “Buy Lines” and any trades that go through get listed in the space under that. Notice at the very bottom is the text input for your welcome message. That is what players see when they click on your buyer to make a transaction. A nice friendly message is always a good idea but another good idea might be to let them know how long you will have your buyer up so they know to get back from hunting to sell you their spoils before you log off.

If you set up a buyer think carefully before you place your bid. First consideration is whether you are trying to buy things to use for yourself, or whether you are trying to buy things to resell. Either way it’s a very good idea to make sure you watch prices and supply for the item you are interested in under /baz as well. See the previously posted Bazaar Essay for an explanation of why. If you are trying to buy for resale then you must be vary careful not to get caught up in bid wars that will drive your costs up and destroy your ability to make a profit. Try to be patient and keep your offers low or it could lead you to disaster. Keep in mind too that some buyers are heavily in the game, running 24/7. Be careful about asking for a high quantity of an item… especially if you also get caught up in a bid war… because it could just be the case that someone is jacking up the bids purposely so they can dump large amounts of an item on you at a higher than normal price. Though it may not be incredibly common, it is also not that unusual either for a player to show up with items in the hundreds. Like when tradeskillers stock up on combineables and find out they don’t need half of what they saved up… If you ask for 999 Cobalt Ore, expect that you just might get it. Don’t carry more cash than you are willing to see vanish or it just might do exactly that. Carry just enough to make fulfill the transactions you are expecting. It’s really easy to add an extra, unintended zero to a bid without noticing and end up newbie-broke. Recheck your bids using the barter window just to make sure you entered what you thought you entered. Doing so will also show you if anyone is out-biding you, or if suddenly a buyer dropped out allowing you to lower your own bid. If you do run out of cash your buyer will automatically drop out of buyer mode and no longer accept trade, so play it safe and keep only what you need on your person to buy what you expect to buy and keep everything else in the bank.

If you aren’t worried about turning a profit then you have more leeway in how high you set your bids. Watch the trader side of the bazaar with /baz searches as often as you can to be sure you aren’t over bidding, or that what you are looking for doesn’t suddenly become available over there. A lot of traders set up without ever checking /barter so it’s a good idea to watch for that.

You don’t always have to out bid the other buyers to get what you want out of buyer mode. Sometimes it’s better to match the other bids; at least then you know you have a chance of getting what you’re shooting for. Always out-bidding the competition may seem like a sure thing at first but it’s risky too. The problem with upping a bid is that some players check their buyers so often, that 10 minutes after you set up your trader with the best bids and go off to bed or work or whatever… They up their own bids and your whole time in buyer mode from then on is a waist. That said too, announcing your buys and especially bragging that your offers are better than anyone else’s is like giving your competition notice that it’s time to check their buyer and up their own bids. Matching the other bidders is usually the safest bet, especially if you don’t know their usual habits or wont be checking on your buyer very often. But then again, sometimes the risk will pay off too, so you just have to get to know the other buyers and how they do things. Know too that you don’t have to get caught up in a bid war if you don’t want to… Often you can still do ok even if your bid is lower than some of the others because buyers log on and off on different schedules and you might get a chance at some trades later on even if there are a couple people out-bidding you when you set up. Again, a little experience will help you gage the usual habits of the other buyers so you can compensate when necessary

Time is Money: Getting what we want in the EQ marketplace.

Black-markets aside… There are two ways to get what we want in EQ. We can invest our time. Or we can invest our plat. We can sometimes cheat the equation a bit, but usually the less time we spend the more plat we have to spend.

Obviously, farming mobs for specific loot can be very tedious. Often it’s a long hard grind that pulls us out of the game and feels very unnatural. The lack of freedom to move and explore on a loot grind can really destroy the sense of play, but what we get is ‘free,’ costing ‘only’ our time. This is the old-school fall-back option that we all have whether we like it or not.

Joining a guild, cooperating, and sharing resources with friends will take time as well but is a big leap in efficiency and can bring back some of our sense of freedom and fun. Exploring, and the random loot that comes with it is no longer such a ‘waist’ of time when we share what we don’t need with others, and they share what they don’t need with us. In reality, or virtuality, genuine cooperation can be a powerful boost to productivity and progress and has the bonus of being much more fun and satisfying while we’re at it. It’s often not enough though to supply everything we want in the quantity we need. Cooperation, generosity, charity, civic spirit, whatever you choose to call it is fantastic, but it only goes so far. When what we have is rarely needed and what we need is in high demand or otherwise hard to come by we will most likely have to turn to the marketplace. The marketplace can provide a variety and convenience that is hard to come by any other way.

Genuine Role-play aside… Begging, grifting, and just plain mooching is a path some take but one I wouldn’t recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy normal, healthy social relationships in the game. It’s the selfish approach. The lazy approach… But oddly enough, it probably takes more work and more time, all to reap much less in the end. Unless of course it’s the ‘thrill’ and ‘gratification’ of using and manipulating other people that is the real goal... If I’m not mistaken though, that’s referred to as psychopathy. Truly, truly sad. And then beyond that, when otherwise normally functioning people behave in a similarly thoughtless and self-serving fashion, it is doubly sad. Unfortunately though, some people twist our collective hope and aspiration for mutual support and cooperation into the unabashed expectation of it. It’s said that, “A gift expected is paid, not given.” Something to think about before anyone expects to live, or in this case play, by the generosity of others. It’s one thing to be generous, or to be open to receiving generosity. But to expect that generosity is owed and should be paid… Worse to demand it… That’s something else entirely.

Those are the ‘free’ approaches to gaining what we want, costing ‘only’ our effort and our time. The next group of methods cost both time and plat. Usually the less time we invest, the more we will have to spend in plat. The reason being, is that we will essentially be paying other players for using their time instead. Methods include barter, buying, auction, vender-farming, baz-farming, and trading.

By barter I mean in the classic sense. I trade a sword I don’t want for a sword I do want. The problem there is that it’s usually very unlikely that we will find someone who wants to make the same particular exchange we want to make, even if we use the item-for-item feature in the buyer/barter side of the bazaar. (Otherwise known as the Blue Griffin Hall.) Setting up an item-for-item trade is great for saving plat, but usually abysmal when you consider the likely long, dragging, wait involved. We can often shorten that wait though if we also offer a little plat along with our item to sweeten the deal. The /buyer tool allows for that option too.

Better time-wise, and probably the next cheapest way to trade plat for time, is to set up a buyer to buy what we want while we’re away from our keyboard. (afk sleeping, at work/school, doing housework, spending time with loved ones, or otherwise just living and enjoying our life) This is a pure plat-item trade. We have to stay logged ofc, but if there aren’t a lot of other buyers pushing up bids for the item we want, then we can usually get items much cheaper than we can any other way. The downside again is that it can take awhile. We’re often looking at days or weeks in buyer mode every night to get enough trade-skill combinables, or any of the rare, or high-demand items. The more generous we are with our bid though, the better our success will be in enticing players to sell things to us, and the quicker we will get what we’re after. (Plat for time.) All buyers should keep constant watch on the prices and supply on the trader side too though. You never know when someone will put up exactly what you need at a better price than what you are asking, because not all players think to check ‘/barter’ before they ‘trader-up.’ On top of that, between price wars on the trader side, and bid wars on the buyer side, the watchful player can find opportunities to make a profit… Buying from traders who aren’t paying attention… And then turning around and selling to buyers who aren’t paying attention… Failing to watch both sides of the bazaar can cost a player an immense amount of time and money.

Vendor farming is not the same as ‘vendor mining’, which is more complex, risky, and has been made increasingly difficult over the years, if not impossible. Vendor farming rather, is simply the practice of going to npc merchants where players are likely to have sold anything of value and buying whatever is readily worth buying. It’s a hit and mostly miss approach. It’s best done in the natural course of play, but if you’re desperate to avoid grinding yourself, you can sometimes luck out by checking any likely vendors you can think of, especially if you’re in the area anyway. It can be a great way of getting useful items on the cheap. Like misty picnics for example, when a player has dumped them after baking skill-ups. Or to get items you can turn around and sell for a profit in the bazaar. Many things can be bought more cheaply off npc vendors, like many eggs, meats, pelts, and some gems and ores, plus many other popular combinables. Just make sure you know what an item goes for in the bazaar before you buy it from an NPC. Conversely, make sure you check to see what an NPC will pay you for something before you sell it in the bazaar. Again, a surprisingly large number of traders don’t check at all or get discouraged waiting for a buyer and start dropping their price for items without ever remembering to check and see what an NPC merchant will pay for them. In my early trading days I made thousands buying from traders and selling to npcs right there in the bazaar. Don’t make their mistake. Potential traders should also carefully consider how likely a player is to actually need an item. I’m still appalled at the number of items that people attempt to sell in the bazaar that have absolutely no value to players. If something sits around in your trader satchel for 6 months or more it may not simply be that your asking price is too high… it may be that what you are trying to sell isn’t needed at all. You can check the internet sights for help in determining the marketability of items that don’t move. But sometimes only experience can teach the difference between trader treasure and vender trash, or even those things that would be better destroyed than taking up space in our satchels. Whatever you do don’t just assume that because someone else has something up too means that there must be a market for it. A lot of traders don’t put much thought or care into what they are doing and are not reliable indicators of an items marketability or value.

The next option for trading plat for time is ‘baz-farming.’ It’s usually much quicker to farm the bazaar for cheap goods than it is sitting in buyer mode night after night. The trade off here is it takes more effort and usually more plat. The downsides are, time away from play, extra camping or zoning, and the tedium and time it takes running back and forth across the bazaar. If you are trying to buy something at the lowest possible market price then it’s not likely that it will be available in the quantity you want at the moment you want it. Baz-farming in it’s own way can be nearly as much a grind as mob farming. Lets say you want to buy Sunshard Ore in today’s market but only want to pay 50plat each. Since most ore is being offered at well over 200plat at the moment you will likely only be able to buy a few at 50p or less, if any at all. To farm the bazaar you buy as many at 50 as you can get today, then check again tomorrow and buy those, and again the next day and buy those, etc. etc. etc… Obviously the more you’re willing to pay for each one, the fewer times you’ll have to check for the cheapies. Combining buyer mode and baz-farming can really keep the costs down while also shaving collection time. I suggest to anyone who wants to farm the bazaar with the least trouble, to park an unused toon there, (or use your trader to do this if you are running one). Then you simply load your baz farming toon from character selection before or after each session of play. I suggest a wait of 12 to 24 hours to allow items to build up between checks, but you can check as often or as little as you want depending on how long you want to have to keep checking. The more effort you put in and the more generous you are with your spending the faster it goes.

Auction ofc is an old-school option and still very useful, but also something of a mixed bag. It requires either persistence to keep holding out for the right person to cross your path who will perhaps accept a less than generous trade… Or generosity on your part, or at least a willingness to accept a trade that benefits you less than it otherwise might in order to turn a quick deal. Again… you’re trading plat for time. The more in-demand an item is the more likely it is to demand a high price. When selling, I suggest /auction be saved for the hottest items in hopes of generating some competition among interested parties. Anything else is probably best put on a trader or you are likely to have to accept much less than you might like, to make the deal.

The last option ofc is simply to walk into the bazaar and pay whatever price you have to, to get the thing you want. You might luck-out and get a bargain, or maybe the deal will be fair for the market. Though, a fair deal isn’t what most people really want. The word a lot of buyers, and sellers, are looking for is windfall. And then of course, and often enough, you simply will have to pay an extravagant price if you absolutely must have exactly what you want at that very moment. If this is how you go about getting your goods, you aren’t paying for the item alone, what you are really paying for is instant gratification. And unless you get lucky, that can be a very expensive commodity. If throwing plat around isn’t in your nature, or paying more than you want grates too painfully… You can save yourself a lot of frustration, and plat, by thinking ahead. Start shopping for what you will need further on down the road as soon as you know you will need it. That way you can take advantage of all the various plat saving methods, as well as any lucky deals you chance upon.

I think it’s important to recognize the bazaar for what it is. A marketplace. A lot of the frustration players have with the marketplace in EverQuest comes from not accepting that, that is what it is. In my experience, players seem much happier who understand the fullness of what that means. It’s true that the marketplace functions at it’s best when the players keep fairness as their goal, but not necessarily when it’s their expectation. Because after all, when we are honest with ourselves, it’s perfectly natural for us to be too self-serving from time to time, even when we try not to be. And sometimes we can be very poor judges of what is truly fair.

Marketplaces can be fair, and they are quite often. There are significant pressures in that direction over all, but they can also be very irrational and even exceptionally unfair. I think it’s important when we hit that wall in EverQuest not to take it personally or otherwise let it get to us. After all, this is a game, and absolutely nothing we can ‘buy’ in it is anything we actually need. No one is threatened with starvation because they can’t afford misty picnics and unlike real life sometimes, in a virtual reality, any suffering we do because we can’t buy something is completely voluntary.

If you ask a lot of different players what a fair price for an item would be you are likely to get nearly as many different answers. Value is subjective, and it’s easy to overlook all the factors that may come into play. So most, if not all of those different answers, can be utterly valid to those giving them. Fairness is a fine goal, but true charity and generosity is probably best left to relationships outside the marketplace, whether it’s something you want to give or receive. Supply and Demand is a factor. Greed of course is a factor too in pushing a price over the ‘fair’ line into something that feels ‘unfair.’ Yet greed cuts both ways. After all, what else would it be but greed to expect someone to sell us something for less than it is worth to them? Once we understand all that though. Once we accept that a game can have a true marketplace that functions pretty much as does a real market place, then we’ll be much happier. Once we understand what’s going on and how it works, our relationships with players there can be as rewarding as our relationships with players anywhere else in the game. When we expect it to be other than what it is though, that’s when all the frustration and a host of other negatives, only ever increase in measure.

That’s how I see it anyway…

Hope something in that might be useful to someone...

There's supposedly a way to make all the traders disappear to make it easier to get around. Anyone know how to do this?

aye I certainly do, open bazaar window(/bazaar),then down by the "find trader" button there is a hide all traders button. This will help alot with your lag issues.

There's a gate in the "under arena" area -- doesn't open when I click on it. I presume it needs to be lockpicked? Is that a good place for a Rogue (or *cough* Bard) to go to practice?

Duh is me, I was in the bazaar looking for a good 1hs so I took out all my cash from the bank and started searching. Finding nothing, I set off to do some hunting, zone into Nexus and was rooted by my excess weight. Of course I didn't realize that at first, thought I was embedded in another player or something. After doing the jump, duck, sit routine, I sent in a petition crying about how poor me was stuck. After about 10 minutes, my brain started working and I realized I was about 1200 overweight. A very kind druidess ( I think)tried to help me by casting lev and strength, but to no effect. Finally she cast lev on herself, and I started giving her plat, a few k at a time until I could move. She could not cast lev on me because I was too low a level. What was really neat is that I had to trust a stranger with my life's savings. Her child was watching us play, she said, and she said it was a good example of honesty and trust for the child. We zoned into the bazaar, she gave me my money, and I thanked her from the bottom of my heart and gave a generous donation. People like that make up for any and all idiots in the game. Stromm server by the way.

haha same thing happened to my brother back when I first started so he tried giving me items. Couldn't move an inch! However he was not as lucky as you to have an honest person to help him..he lost many itmes that were worth a lot that the guild shared. :(

Even worse is accidentally hitting the new "Return Home" button instead of the "Enter World" button when logging in your bazaar trader. It's no fun ending up with your lvl 1 toon in Halas or some other nearly deserted home city with ten trader bags full of loot and 30k plat!!!!!

usually a SoW and Str works pretty well. I've had this exact same thing happen to me (both being stuck and being the nice druidess) and Sow has always worked. Glad ya got unstuck and don't feel TOO bad hahah I know I felt really stupid *grin*

A mount really helps… even a cheap one... as long as you’ve zoned someplace where you’re allowed to summon one that is. Heavy coin is one thing but an encumbered trader is taxing to unload.

Here is a link to where some other people have addressed this issue.

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=25365

I have a 30k lizard and he runs about SoW speed, maybe a tad bit slower. I have a 60k lizard on another toon and I know for a fact that it runs are Scale Spirit speed. My Shammy on AF with SoW could not keep up with the 60k horse. I used Scale Spirit, and the Shammy was able to keep up.

See many posts on this topic in various item descriptions, so I though I would post my observations here since I seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in the Bazaar...

1) People are always complaining that the prices posted on this website and others do not reflect the market within Norrath (or at least on their server). Prices on servers vary according to population, and the level of certain guilds or other groups who venture into high level zones. For example, one server may have nice prices on Chardok equipment, while these goods may be relatively rare on another server because no one can get a group together or they keep the loot for themselves (and thus, the prices are comparably higher).

Also, prices for new items vary more than those with a well-established value: a two tined corpse pitchfork currently sells for between 1k and 10k depending on server, time of day, mood swings, etc., but the silver chitin wristband is always more or less 5k no matter where you go.

Another variable is the pricing data that appears here. Few people post prices on this website when they buy something, and thus the sample is too low to be statistically significant. Also, prices vary over time and can change quite rapidly, so much of the information here may already be somewhat dated.

There are also some unscrupulous individuals who will submit pricing data that is too high or too low in order to influence the market -- if you examine the individual data, it is easy to pick out the anomalies for a more accurate reading. I try to submit data whenever I can, with a little note on the average price for that server. If I buy something that is obviously an exception to the average (such as a rune etched icewurm fang for 100pp), then I do not post that data.

2) For those trying to get a price check on something, try to compare the prices on other similar goods (or even go to another server). Of course, what you will find are those items that have not yet sold, and may be overpriced to begin with so this method is not always an accurate gauge of the market. Also, recently added items with heretofor unknown uses are always difficult to price (such as new tradeskill or research items). After spending some time in the environment (and watching people complain about certain prices), you will learn the local structure.

3) Nothing is ever 'too expensive' or 'too cheap,' as the market eventually works itself out in the end. If somebody wants to pay a ridiculous price for an item, then people are going to continue charging that amount. If no one buys an item, the vendor will eventually come down in price (except for those EverMules that don't mind sitting there 24/7).

Those who buy plat with dollars (or who earn lots of plat within the Norrathian economy) ensure that prices on some items remain high. As these toons upgrade their items, the market is then flooded with lower-level goods that should be more readily available to those of us who are not a sufficiently wealthy or in an 'uber' guild.

As a frequent patron of the Bazaar, I tend to sell things cheaper than everyone else because I am not patient when it comes to selling (although I will not undercut someone who has obviously priced something too low -- will usually buy it instead). However, I am willing to wait for a good price on an item, and I always get what I want at the price I want (impatient seller / patient buyer seems to work for me). It is all about circulating plat -- someone buys from me so I can then buy something from someone else, and so on. In the end, it only depends on how much effort you want to put into it.
Item pricing (The Bazaar)
# Aug 01 2008 at 4:06 AM Rating: Decent
Buying or selling, price is the most difficult thing to figure out as far as I’m concerned. That’s about half the reason I use this site, to try and figure out what something is used for, what it’s real value is, whether I should buy it or hunt it, and what might be a fair price considering all the variables.

After my experience of heavy trading over the last year or more and watching /ooc and /general on Bristlebane, it doesn’t surprise me at all in reading this five-hear-old post that complaining about prices in Everquest, reasonable or not, is a past-time that is ever popular.

Just this last week someone went off on a rant about the ‘high’ cost of the ores like Tungsten & Cobalt. I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. Yes, it will cost you at least 30k to buy a full stack of cobalt if you absolutely must have it today, but that’s just a fraction of what it was just after the last expansion when everyone was trade-skilling and cobalt was selling, and selling out, at 2k each. Yes, that’s 200,000p per stack, if you could get it that is.

A lot of people don’t believe that supply-and-demand applies in the EQ bazaar but if you’ve ever done any ‘serious’ trading, been an Evermule as the previous poster so cleverly puts it, and if you’ve really paid attention while your at it, you see that it clearly does apply. Take Sunshard. After the last expansion Sunshard Ore was selling at 120,000 - 180,000 a stack for a time, this past May when I was buying loads of it for Research I paid 30,000 for every hundred. (Though some days I had to wait till the next day to get it at that price) Today you would be very lucky to sell a stack for over 10,000 I think.

Then there’s the Dwerium story… When the new trio jewelry came on the market it was possible for a lvl 1 character to get full stats wearing, for example, taaffite or nihilite augs in Dwerium. It was sometimes hard to come by. Everyone was twinking-out in the stuff. Then it was nerfed with lvl restrictions for dwerium and the rest, no more twinking your lvl 1 toons with thousands of hit-points, therefore a huge and sudden drop in demand. Ofc the price of the jewelry, the augs, dwerium, and the ingredients for them all dropped drastically too as a result.

I don’t have much time to do it a lot, but In trying to be helpful to other players I’ve occasionally posted wherever I found gaps on this site in the kind of information I come here to look for. Often, even just days or weeks after a post, the market for a particular item is behaving differently. It happens over and over, and will continue to I’m sure.

Like LoN cards… not only are there swings in interest that causes prices to rise and fall, but there have been intentional changes in drop rates for various reasons since I started watching prices there… Like the up-coming drop-rate increase due this weekend to coincide with the release of new raid & promo cards.

One week you never have to pay over 2500 for a starter deck if you don’t want to, the next you can’t find one for less than 4 or 5000. Who knows what the going price will be by Sunday morning.

The one constant in all this is that there is no constant, except change that is. Change is pretty constant.

So, you do your research, cover all the angles you can think of, watch the market, compare prices, fumble around, make your best guess, proceed with caution, take a few risks, undercharge and loose plat, overcharge and **** people off, embarrass yourself sometimes either way… And there you have it… All the joy… And all the bliss… Of trading in the Everquest Bazaar.

After I set up and began trading, I wanted to compare my prices with those of other traders, so I did /bazaar and did a search for Vah Shir, Beastlord, Primary slot. NONE OF MY ITEMS SHOWED UP IN THE SEARCH. If I do a search by Discription, My items show up, but not if i search by Slot, Class and Race. I put a max price of 10,000pp. Anybody know what can cause this? And yes, I did set prices for all my items, and when I click view items in trader view, they show up. Why don't they show on the /bazaar search?

True, it will drop some if over 200 matches but that's not the reason. I get the same problem occasionally even when I don't get the message about 200 items. I tried for a few days to figure it out... I'm stumped.

How do I get items to appear as links when I /auction?
RE: Links in Auctions
# Mar 19 2003 at 11:03 AM Rating: Excellent
Just got some help with this one myself.
1) Right mouse click on the item and hold the button down.
2) Move the cursur over onto the item window that opens.
3)After a second you can relese the right mouse button.
4)Now move the cursor onto the picture of the item itself an left click on the picture.

The link line should now be in your dialoge box.
Disconnect in Bazaar
# Feb 04 2003 at 1:31 PM Rating: Decent
I set myself up as a trader last night and went off to bed, think of all the riches awaiting me come morning when all my extra gear had been purchased. My hubby was up for several more hours and told me I had been disconnected after 20 minutes or so. He logged me back in to trade in the bazaar and the same thing happened again about 20 minutes later. Is this timed disconnect a feature of EQ or my ISP? I have a cable modem so it isn't disconnecting me from the Internet after a set period of time. If it's EQ, how do I turn it off? Thanks.
RE: Disconnect in Bazaar
# Feb 20 2003 at 1:54 PM Rating: Decent
Does this happen during normal play? I had this happen to me when playing, and it was a router configuration issue. If you're not using a router, then there may be some setting on your cable modem that needs tweaking.
RE: Disconnect in Bazaar
# Feb 20 2003 at 2:26 PM Rating: Excellent
Dropping off after 20 mins of inactivity most certainly not an EQ "feature", or the Bazaar would have a LOT fewer traders in it!

I've had some times when I have to keep logging my vendor back on, and back on again. And other times, it will stay on for DAYS, with the same system and router settings. I also have a superstition that running it in full-screen mode is somehow better than running it in a minimized window, on the assumption that it becomes a higher priority for my computer, but that's probably just superstition.
RE: Disconnect in Bazaar
# Aug 19 2003 at 9:53 PM Rating: Decent
To set EQ as a higher priority program, just open your task manager (press ctrl - alt - del at same time), choose the applications tab, right click on everquest in that window, then choose "go to process" from the sub menu that opens on it. you'll transfer to another screen in task manager, with eqgame.exe highlighted. right click on it then choose "set priority". set it to high or above normal to ensure that it gets the maximum system resources available (runs reeaaally fast, or at least fast as your computer can handle w/out ... well ... crash and burning like an f1 driven by Stevie Wonder.
P.S. not responsible for your mistakes in doing this (or my own, come to think of it..)

Running in full-screen is better, and does give priority on most Windows systems. You can also reset priority in the system settings. I don't know the specific procedure. Also, turn off as many background features as you can, Disable the screen saver, and any scheduled events( like a scheduled virus scan).

One must be careful when leaving the zero-gravity atmosphere of the Bazaar...make sure you bank before leaving.

It was late and I was tired and I zoned into the nexus with a couple of trader's satchels and a few thousand coin and proceeded to stick to the floor (as a halfling rogue my strength is not very high). Needed to have some friendly soul come and buff my strength so I could drag my **** back into the Bazaar.

Quite embarrassing...

One effective method to reduce lag is to turn your clip plane to 0%. You can't see too far ahead but the lag goes to zero. This techinque works very well.

Well, there's still lag, but it's certainly much less. Of course I suppose it depends on how uber your system is too.

Nvidia just came out with its latest and greatest, the GeForce FX, I think the Bazaar would be a good shock test for it. I also notice lag is a lot less when I play on a system with 1 gig of DDR RAM.

Athlon XP 2800+
Nforce2 chipset
1GB LL PC2700 RAM (matched pair)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128RAM

So far I've been able to max out all settings, include all textures, and extend clipping plane all the way out with zero performance hit in any zone EXCEPT the bazaar.

The bazaar brought my machine to it's knees.

Bazaar Tricks
# Oct 09 2002 at 4:46 PM Rating: Decent
I had trouble using the bazaar at first too. Here are two tricks nice people let me in on.

1. You need to be using the new ui. To do that, you must type /newui. If at first you don't like it, just give it a chance. I like it much better. After that /bazaar should work. If you are a caster, some of the new spell effects can be overkill. You can turn their transparency down and get back to business.

2. To help with the lag in the bazaar, look at the floor. It is much easier to move around that way. You can still see the base of the walls and trader platforms and find your items by right clicking the trader's name and proceeding in the direction that points you. Look up briefly when you think you may have reached your destination. If you don't see the vendor you wanted, look at the floor again and go around the platform. There are vendors on both sides.

Good luck, be safe and if anyone knows how to set up a merchant, please give us a step-by-step.
