Strength has no effect on success rate, just skillups.

Many people fail the torphies at 250 skills, so trying at 209 you've got to expect to fail, at least a few times.

Just got this on my 3rd attempt. My smithing skill was only 193 but my int was 280 and wis was 207 so that might have helped. I feel really lucky getting easy.

Considering this item comes as a result of being a GM Blacksmith - and that requires a larger investment in time and money than most of the epics - this item is probably one of the rarest items in the game.

A few pointers:

The trophy has a 5% skill mod, the same as a geerlock and they do NOT stack. When you get your trophy sell your geerlock.

The trophy is triv >250, probably 260 or so which means, what ever your skill, you will have at least a 1/3 chance of failing. You can try to make it with any skill level but the closer to 250 you are the better your chance. Note it is ONLY your current skill that matters when you try for your trophy and Int/Wis/Buffs make no difference whatsoever.

The maximum any unmodified basic tradeskill can reach is 250. If you are a GM with geerlock or trophy - it should make you 262 - but it doesn't, for some reason, the maximum modified skill is fixed at 252.

So, with a skill of 240 and a +5% mod, technically you have 252, the maximum possible skill. This means there is absolutely no benefit, apart from pride, in getting your skill over 240.

The title Grandmaster is reserved by most people for those who have an unmodified skill of 250. However, at 240+, it is common to refer to onself as a "Technical" GM.

Might have been pure coincidence (but I doubt it) ... my Druid was started with a poor base WIS and try as I might I cannot seem to get him very high in the WIS categorie...

I failed 3 times making this with my WIS at 230ish, but when I borrowed some WIS gear from a buddy of mine (thank you again Bakkus Grape'Stomper for being both patient and giving with the gear and the seals) I brought my WIS up to 245 or so and succeeded in making this.

Might have been luck, but who knows...?

All, except one tradeskill (for those who were not investing AA points) can exceed 200, thats the point when you grandmastered the skill. At least that was my opinion about it :)

Grandmaster is a player invented term. When you hit 201, or 250, the name on your skills screen still says MASTER.

While there are many different interpretations of this, the prevailing view (from threads on eqtraders discussion boards) among tradeskillers is that Grandmaster means 250 RAW, unmodified skill, the pinnacle of your trade.

Grandmaster Items trivial at >250.
I wouldn't advice trying to make one until/unless you have at least 200 skill in your chosen trade.
Main reason is the Artisan's seal requires 1 Blue Diamond, 1 Diamond, 1 Black Sapphire and 1 jacinth to make... Fairly expensive to fail on and expect to fail at least a couple of times

"Artisan's seal requires 1 Blue Diamond, 1 Diamond, 1 Black Sapphire and 1 jacinth to make"

Not to mention of course, the 4 rubies and 8 velium bars....
RE: brother made the fletching thing
# Feb 03 2004 at 12:00 PM Rating: Default
The Velium for the mounted items and Rubies for the Vial of Purified Mana (unless you find them as a drop) will cost you a minimum of 2,633p:

With *kindly* Thurgadin factions and a CHA of about 168 the Velium Bars cost me 2,099p [262p each] and with Indif PoK faction (as all are) the 4 Rubies cost me 524p.

The only things that are absoulutely required to buy are the Velium Bars and the HQ Firing Sheet.

If you are lucky and patient the gems clay can be farmed (which are so cheap it is not worth worrying about farming). The Pods of Water to make the water flasks can be foraged or farmed as well, but you will have to buy the Bottle ... might as well buy the H2O Flasks at a vendor.
No Drop?

Okay so we are saying is A Grandmaster Fletcher cannot make his trophy unless he's either a master Jeweler or Smith? I was under the understanding that you could only go over 200 in one field. What's the answer to this one. I just hit 200 in fletching and was planning on working my way up. Any others have insight into this.

Grandmaster fletchers should go for the "Grandmaster Fletcher's Knife" (Artisan's Seal + Fish Bone Dart Tool) which is the fletching equivalent of the other grandmaster trophies.

But...What's it LOOK like?!?
# Jun 03 2002 at 4:53 AM Rating: Decent
Primary...Secondary... What does this thing LOOK like?!? If a Geerlock hammer looks like what a smithy hammer would (if it was equipable,) then i would love to hear that it appears as a geerlock, but has a redish glow to it (eternally forge fire hot... or your soul, lost in the forge long ago) and has little anvils floating around it. (it IS a tradeskill epic, right?)

I fear the standard geerlok look, or no graphic! Someone please tell us its appearance, please. Though, I'll be sure to try one soon, and let ye know then.

The reason for them looking the same is a simple one. The more different graphics you have, the more memory you use. And the less memory you have available, the slower EQ runs. So although I also would love to see some cool effects on the GM stuff. I have to say VI did the right thing [for once] in just using a normal graphic for them.

So is it possible then, to make 3 of these, (since ammo doesn't work) equip them in pri, sec, and rng, and effectively add 30 str/int/wis and 150 cha to base stats?
Obviously melee's wouldn't want to do this....but I am thinking of my mage, and the obvious boon this would give me.....GBS, SoM, and students homework gives me 22 INT from the hands/rng. so above here, is 30 plus str and wis. Makes the rest of the skills a lot easier to attain, and the str....would be a super help to my weak little mage....
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 07 2002 at 5:29 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) notice...LORE!!!!
RE: so....
# Nov 05 2002 at 6:28 PM Rating: Default
Each of them is lore... however, there are several skills. So you could have a spoon, a hammer, and a cork. That would give you that incredible stat bonus, but would be VERY expensive. They're all trivial at 250+ and you can only get one skill over 200. Trying a 250+ combine with 200 skill is an fast way to destroy ingredience, and with Artisan's seals selling for about 5k, well..... ouch

You are going to love this if you haven't heard already...

To make these you need an Artisan's Seal. Simple Enough...

1 Blue Diamond
1 Black Sapphire
1 Diamond
1 Jacinth
8 Bars of Velium
1 Vial of Purified Mana (1 Poison Vial, 4 Rubies)
1 Small Block of Clay
1 Water Flask

Combine 1 Gem with 2 Bars of Velium (UNSTACKED) in a jewelers bag (OMG use for the 3rd slot at last) (Trivial around 185 JC) = Mounted Gem

Do that for all 4 gems

Combine the Vial of Mana (Chanter Made) with the gems, the clay and water in a potters wheel. Trivial about 135 Pottery = Unfired Seal

Fire with HQ Sheet in Kiln = Artisan's Seal!

All this is tradeable stuff, the only thing that becomes NO DROP is the hammer itself.

Each tradeskill (cept poison and alchemy :() can combine this seal with various BS items and if the skill level is high enough (you better be as close as you can stand to be to 250 in your tradeskill) it makes a no drop trophy item. All have the same stats (just like this one) but all have different names based on what skill you grandmastered to make them. All are NO DROP, the seals can be made for you, but the trophy YOU have to make. NONE of the items are LORE. SO YES YOU CAN HAVE 4 (Note: In AMMO slot these items do nothing, but all other 3 slots confirmed to work).

UPDATE ----

Recent information confirms a change has been made to these items. They now appear to grant a +5% bonus to the appropriate tradeskill they are made with. This is a nice additional boon if you managed to make one before maxing the skill, makes each of the items more unique in that the Blacksmithing Trophy no longer has EXACTLY the same stats as the JC Trophy, and may possibly (conjecture only I have no real idea how Verant calculates success on items with trivials above 250) increase your chances of success on very special items that are not trivial at any skill level (there are SO many of these now adays its sick.)

Oh your quite right, it's foolish to try. But worth the reward should I succeed just once, and yes the money might have been better spent raising my skill but, it takes SOOOO long to move just a single point when it gets that high, and I honestly was hoping to get lucky :)

Once more perhaps, then I give up this dream for awhile...

UPDATE -- I have by now maxed JC, it is now 250. However thanks to Verant's sick sense of humor, I've failed twice more, once making the seal and once firing the seal, something that gave me no trouble at all the first 2 times BEFORE maxing JC. Gotta love fate sometimes...

#REDACTED, Posted: May 13 2002 at 10:19 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You learned a Tradeskill to make items for yourself? I thought the purpose of a Tradeskill was to TRADE. This, while nice, defeats the purpose of the Tradeskill. The reward for "going the distance"? The fact that you are one in maybe 50 people who can make it and sell it at 10kpp a pop.

A lot of people learn a skill to make things for themselves, and also to sell to others along the way. I look at this item as "icing on the cake". Sure for a lot of classes it isn't useful, but imagine an enchanter that can hold 3 of them and gain 30 INT and 150 CHA. Also carrying one item (or leaving it in the bank) that raises CHA by 50 can't hurt much either when you need to buy/sell. This item also is kind of a symbol of achievement to all of those other people that never have tried a tradeskill, prefering to buy from others ("Why would I want to waste my time doing that when I could just be out exp grinding/farming for plat and just buy what I want!").

For some people that have given up at the 200 mark on a skill, it might just be the extra push they need to keep skilling up to close to 250, to give this a shot. Sure this item may not be a reason to start a trade skill, but it sure can be incentive to keep plugging away at the one you gave up on when you hit grandmaster.

RE: No drop
# May 14 2002 at 2:44 PM Rating: Decent
That is crazy.
*(cost of t he item + cost to skill up to 250)*
Conservatively speaking, it will cost 20k to get to 250, plus another *rough guess of* 5k for the item.
So according to your logic, if I would come to you to obtain one of these items, you'd charge me 25k+ for it.

With logic like that, it is no wonder the economy is so utterly screwed up.

On Tarew Marr, I make various smithed items. I love it when someone says they want a four thousand percent markup for smithed items, and I come along and undercut them by a mega landslide.
I'll sell 20 items in the time it takes them to sell one, and I have far more plat than they do at the end of the day.
But it irritates the heck out of me, when I have to depend on someone elses skill (jewelcraft) and get shafted (I usually pass if they are like you, and want too much).
I realize that people can charge pretty much what they want, but this gouging is truely annoying.

Sorry...bunch or irritants happening today....like sand in the shorts, hemorroids in july, road rash, and price gougers - all rolled into one.

It is a trophy/prize for being a grandmaster in a certain tradeskill. It would not be a trophy if a non-grandmaster could buy it. Think of it as VI giving trophies to the grandmasters of the tradeskills.

And as far as the money making goes: Do any of the tradeskill, outside of jewelcraft, make any real money?
RE: No drop
# May 14 2002 at 2:53 AM Rating: Decent
Fletching sure doesn't make any money, I've got 202 skill in it and need to up it some more with the new cultural stuff that just came out (/drool, 30/38, 5str/agi/dex/wis, 50hp/mana, 10magic/fire/cold bow)

Did I ever expect to make money from Fletching? No. Do I care? No. Any respectable ranger should be a good fletcher :-p

On a different note, does anybody know if the artisan's seal made for these by jewelers are no-drop? I don't want to have to increase jewelcraft to make one of these :(
RE: No drop
# May 19 2002 at 6:57 AM Rating: Decent
Heh... Fletching is profitable... just make Ceramic Vaned arrows and sell them back to the merchant. At Fletch 202 you're looking at 95% success rate, and you only need to stay above 80% to make a profit.

Okay, so you're only making 5-8pp per stack of combines... but it's STILL a profit ;o)

And as for that new WoodElf Culrural... the Champion arrows sure look sweet... until you notice they're still 'race/class = none/none' (makes them so you can't equip them)

Next patch is SUPPOSED to fix this, up the dmg to 12 (making them the hardest hitting arrows)and make each combine yield 10 arrows.

PS, I just looked back over the EQTraders boards... I think I was the first to report the stats on the Champion (small knock) arrows... woohoo, I'm a researcher! :o)
