  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

Yet more info mostly cribbed from eqtraders... :)

The prayer/inspiration bit is actually done by an invisble NPC that stands in the back left corner (if you are facing the stage). If it's not up, spamming the prayer won't do any good.

You can tell if it is up by grabbing something (coins, whatever) from you inventory and attempting to trade it with the corner (!). If you get a trade window up for a mob named 'You' (at least was for me), or a too far away message, it's up. Go stand in the corner and spam the prayer - I still had 'You' targetted and the pattern popped first try.

The NPC de-pops when the pattern appears. Not sure of the re-spawn time, but I seem to recall reading it is a couple of hours or so.

Incidentally, the Etched Rune Pattern is no longer No Drop.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 26 2001 at 12:18 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Pure and simple this quest (and many Velious quests) is a result of people ******** about the uselessness of most trade skills in the game up to this point. This ******** was quite justified. Jewelcraft was one of the few that truely gave usefull results through most of the skills. Although there is some usefull armor that can now be made with tailoring and smithing and food that boosts stats, etc, for the most part, trade skills in this game are sort of a waste. More of an afterthpoght than an integral part of the game. Most RPGs entail being good at your chosen craft, not an expert at all trade crafts. Verant has given "soloing" a whole new twist here.

to go from 1-201, i only actually lost about 1600pp, just buying lots of bars and gems, selling back the un-enchanted jewelry to merchants. you can do jewelcraft and not lose a whole lot of plat in terms of actual loss...just need to be intelligent about it

i did brewing last night and the night before too, got to 135 and probably spent less than 40pp (wasn't paying attention just bought stacks of barley, hops, yeast, etc..).

personally i like doing trade skills more than i like sitting in sebilis for hours killing piles and piles of frogs for the occasional good loot

I was thinking about that today, really it seems about the same, doing trade skills or sitting someplace for hours, I go back and forth between which I do. One suggestion for brewing, in Kaladim you can buy short beer, dwarven ale, and casks. Make 2x brewed 2x stout will get you to skill 142 or so (at 136 now).
    Shawl Upates
    # Jun 20 2001 at 8:00 PM Rating: Excellent
I just completed Shawl #7 today. I tried to take notes along the way.

A vendor in Thurgadin sells a Mortar and Pestle, but it may not be the right kind. When I tried I got an error message, but later on, I thought that perhaps I'd put a Water in there as well. A regular Rogue's Mortar and Pestle works fine.

Making Enchanged Velium Powder was trivial at 171 Pottery.

Unfired Rune was Trivial at 171 Pottery.

Making the Blank Rune was Trivial at 171 Pottery.

Making the Burin was Trivial at 175 Fletching.

Making Enchanted Rune was Trivial at 175 Fletching.

Making Fish Oil worked at 135 Brewing. I didn't notice if I got a Trivial message. May have been automatic success.

The Rubbing Alcohol is *not* in East Cabalis as the links above indicate. It's in West Cabalis. Face the Shadowknight Guild (?) and then turn right. The building you see ahead of you has a skeleton that sells it.

Making the Liquid Velium was Trivial at 135 Brewing.

The Royal Blood comes from the Throne Room area *behind* the fishing pond in Kael. It seems that there's only 2 or 3 giants that drop blood and they seem to be on a 2 hour timer. Welcome to the bottle-neck, if that's so.

After getting the Blood, I decided to bump Brewing up to at least 150, before trying to make the Ink. Ink was made, but was *NOT* Trivial at 153 Brewing.

Velium Etched Rune was Trivial at 175 Fletching.

Casing was Trivial at 175 Jewelry.

Encased Velium Etched Rune was Trivial at 175 Jewelry.

Final combine was *NOT* Trivial at 147 Tailoring.

Effect does not seem to be Right-Click. I tried it on an empty inventory spot and in the proper equipment spot. Seems you must wear it to get the effect, much like the Lodizal Shield.

    this is funny,
i keep hearing people cry about the trade skills not being usefull in norrath, about the lack of quests, blah blah blah.
And here is a quest that solves ALL these problems, making it epic, forcing u to be a skillfull craftsman etc...
And now what do we hear?
people whining because its too haaaaard,
this is the best shawl in the game if you dont count god drops (and i can only think of the shawl CT drops with 35 all saves).
This is an UBER item that finally asks you to be TALENTED, and not only a person with a lot of free time to camp a mob with a fixed spawn time...
if you dont like this quest, then dont do it, you dont deserve such a nice shawl.

And another thing, that cleric that cries about not having mana regen...
if u had such a thing you would be perfect then wouldnt you?
as a necro i could cry about not having the ability to heal myself,
not being able to wear plate,
    having such low hp,
not being usefull in a group,
needing to kill someone to be able to rez myself
    etc...

At first I liked the idea of involving trade skills in the quest. Tailoring for the first Ring, Baking for the third shawl. It seamed like they were on the right track.

The problem occurs here. In order to reach the 7th shawl, one needs to be master of ALL trade skills but smithing. What exactly is the point of calling it a trade skill then? Maybe if it were only Baking and Tailoring...

Unfortunately, by requiring Baking, Tailoring, Fletching, Pottery and Jewlcrafting by everyone who plans to do this quest, they have made the trades even more trivial than they were before.

There is no longer any sense of pride in being a skilled craftsman when 30%+ of the casters on a given server are expected to match your skill within 3 months to complete a quest.

As to the complaining.. most of what I see refers to the threads from the spiders in Velks for the 5th shawl. The difficutly involved at this point is far too great. The following shawl requires a minute fraction of the time and effort to acquire and the components come from various zones instead of a single now-overcamped zone. (perhaps they should have simply reversed them)

...or, this being Verant, this is the end of the Shawl series.

There's no reason to *expect* that the quest will be 10-steps like the ring.

Plus, I'm a Cleric. Verant is bullheadedly of the belief that Cleric's should have absolutely no means of mana regeneration other than Enchanters. That is why the Terror-Forged Mask was nerfed and lied about: Clerics suddenly had a way to get mana back!

The fact that Shawl #7 has Flowing Thought 1, even as pitiful as that may be, has me working on the quest. I very sincerely doubt they'll add more to it to make it even *more* desirable and usable by Clerics!

Where you guys actually paying attention the words of the NPC? If they arent lying to us the NPC said "This is the final test of your craftsmanship." This leads me to believe we actually get some battles for the rest of the shawl series.

I know we are limited to only one skill to exceed 200 but with verant this won't matter. I see the 10th shawl as having some kick *** mana regeneration and maybe thurgadin gate would be nice. =)

    # Jun 13 2001 at 12:51 PM Rating: Default
Naw, they haven't put in ALL the trade skills yet, Smithing is still out. All I gotta say is... after investing 50k and 7+ days of hunting in Wakening Lands in vain attempt to get dropped components for tinkering... heck, the rest of the trade skills are CAKE! (Except tailoring, which still sucks, but Velious' new crystalline silk armor can bump that to 131 pretty easily, better'n those dang HQ pelt hunts) Still jealous that my class (cleric) doesn't get invis or tracking or melee fighting or pets or ANYTHING that would help in obtaining the dropped loots for this, but... well, I must say the new Flowing Thought effect is a big step toward making this worthwhile.
    Finished the Runed Shawl Quest
    # Jun 11 2001 at 9:21 AM Rating: Good
This is Aurick Psywarper again. Since the creation of this shawl I have made it a point to be a forerunner in its achievement, I do believe I am the first person with the Runed shawl on my server. These were my skill levels.

Jewelcraft(202)- sorry cant be more help with that
Tailoring (159)- Final combine was NOT trivial but is now known to be trivial at 163
Brewing (169)- All combines involving it were trivial
    Pottery (170)- All trivial
    Fletching (196)- All trivial

For the tailoring Id suggest making Wu's Armor till 158 and then making Arctic Wyvern Hide for the remaining skill points, dont do like I did and take a chance.

The seashell is the hardest thing to get your hands on from sirens grotto in that it is fairly rare and when i was auctioning to buy one people kept trying to sell me Runed Shell Necklaces.
Molkor hide and the swordfish tooth (TOOTH NOT BILL) was fairly easy to come by.

The royal blood was given to me by a guildmate and is said to drop in the area behind the fisherman in Kael.. whatever that means.

BTW- the Burin was returned to me even though it was a succesful combine which makes me wonder what its for... Ill hang on to it in case it is involved in shawl 8.

It says you need to "show your shawl" to a lot of the NPCs in Thurg. How exactly do you do this? Give it to them and cancel the trade? Or if you do give it to them do they return it and then give the intended message?

You just give the correct shawl to the stated NPC and they give it right back to you telling you what a good job you did (I to was scared to death to hand it over that 1st time...And the second;) It is the trigger for them to give you the next step of the quest.

I have looked at the trade skills needed. I see the insane amount of time it takes. Lets try to minimize everyones pain and agony. IF you have finished this quest PLEASE post here your skill ratings in all of the trade skills. Lets try to find a bottom line. If I can squeak by with a 150 tailoring instead of 212 (by god congrats getting it that high btw), I would be saving weeks upon weeks of time. I am mainly interested in fletching/jewelry craft/ and tailoring. These are the skills I think are the ones we all look to barely get by in (i added fletching just because im a mage... i can summon better ones). Please dont post other items under this... make a new thread, so everyone reading this can just quickly look at it and find the lowest skills.

Tailoring - is the only skill that takes A TON of time, large amounts of money, and more hunting than i care to talk about to get to a 150+ skill. cost is VERY HIGH

Pottery - sit in thurgadin bank to 135 and then only hunting required is zombie skins to get from 135 to 185 with vials cost under 200pp to 180 skill

Smithing - Mostly time and pp infront of a vendor and running to the forge.. Gave up at FS stuff.. to hard to make med folded sheets cost in the hundreds of plat range

Fletching - OMG TOO EASY just sit infront of the vendor and do it cost in the 400-600pp range to get to 194

Brewing - a little tough running for supplies, but almost all of them can be bought under 100pp to high level

Fishing - buy a pole and bait and go fish almost no cost just time (do it while you med)

Baking - Buy all the supplies and make em Cost under 100pp just time

Jewelcraft - Sit in front of the vendor and make it No running, hunting just PP and time Lots of pp i'm at 111 skill and spent maybe 1k now it gets expensive at 11pp per attempt.

There they are.....skills in a nut shell. I say Nut shell because you have to ba a nut to enjoy doing this stuff. Can you say Carpel tunnel syndrome.

    Baking (135)

    Fishing (108)

I have an enchanter and a cleric. I was hoping to this quest with my cleric, but having mastered jewelry once, I really don't want to try and do it again without the benefit of enchanted bars.

Sure, I could enchant a whole bunch of bars and find someone to swap them to my cleric, but that would be far more tedious than it's worth.

I think the quest is excellent. Most of my characters have multiple trade skills. However, needing master jeweler as well is probably the dumbest idea I've seen from Verant in some time.

so you need all the trade skills to be at least 150, and verant made it so that only ONE skill can go above 200. the only point to raise these skills then is for the quest. and everything is NODROP! what ever happened to the days when you could get assistance from other players. go to a tailor for the tailored stuff, a potter for vials, etc. verant wants to promote grouping, but i guess only for the killing. anything that might promote roleplaying or more SOCIAL (ie NOT camping stuff) interaction is instead made so you have to solo it. dumb dumb dumb

Let's be honest here, people are whining that by being forced to bring every skill into the 150 range it's going to ruin the market for player crafted items. This is wrong and I'll tell you why.

There is a *huge* difference between a player with 150 skill and a player with 250 skill in a trade. Most of the things people really want will have to be crafted by a specialized master of a trade (read: someone with 250 skill in a given trade). So all the people with 150 skill in tailoring won't be making the profits like those with 201+.

Now, concernig the quest itself, I am currently at 202 skill in jewelry, 130ish in pottery, 46 in baking, like 12 in tailoring and 0 in fletching and smithing. But I am not too worried about getting skill up to 150 range for all those (except tailoring.. ~gah~) since I can raise my INT up to 240 if I so desire. I plan on completing this quest simply because as an enchanter 7ac 7cha and saves OWNS for a shoulder piece, and any mana regen is a bonus (wheather it's one point or 15 points). Heck, as one post stated 1 mana per tick is 600 mana per hour which would keep me mezzing just a little longer.

It's a commonly known fact that once the pulls start and the casters are not full mana the only thing that matters is mana regen, and I would be willing to bet that if there is more to this quest that eventually we will be seeing a FT2 or FT3 item - very worth it IMO.

Well first off I am doing this quest all the way through (stuck on the fifth one right now tailoring only 80) but what i have to say is..the Ring quest was by far easier to do and the result is much better. The ring just blows this out of the water (to bad im not a tank). 12 of us got together and did the ring quest all the way through in about 2-3 hours, maybe we were lucky but hey that was easy stuff.
