The Hole is also known as Old Paineel, the first stronghold of the Heretics, and has long been taken over Elementals and their ilk. For the longest time, the Hole was rumored to house the entrance to the Underfoot... This is, of course, no longer a rumor.

The zone got released on 2000-06-22 during the The Ruins of Kunark expansion.

Level 51 Named spawns at the top of the Revenant Tower in the southernmost room in front of the alter. Hole 1.0.

Hmmm, what am I missing? There doesn't seem to be any elementals in The Hole any longer. There are a few bodies of earth elementals in the halls, but none alive - since I need an Elemental Binder for my Magician epic that is a problem. I've wandered all over the zone and done find any.
Thoughts, anyone? It would be appreciated.

an old construct was already listed, maybe you didn't find it because only the first 25 mobs in alphabetical order are listed by default.
a rock golem was actually missing, I added it along with its rare drop, thanks!
My first time ever in the hole

I think its a fun zone in many ways and I made 65 AA and 5 levels inthere....

How to get in:
Just dive down to the bottom of the little pond, click the rock, it opens and you can enter. There is a safespot once you are thru the water inside the Hole zone.

XP:
Its mad XP!! - Very low HP on the mobs, very high XP in return (gargoyles hit for 200 thou)

LOOT:
Bring the big bags cause you will get loads of gems and jewels which sells for 50pp to 300pp. You can make about 2,000pp an hour in there.

CAUSION:
Its so easy to get lost, and the map is really crappy. It might take you a few times to get to the castle where the high level mobs are.

Just a quick post, not at all a secret but there is a tunnel through some rocks, out of the drop in point at Yaels pit. Just click on one of the rocks and you are free to explore. There are 2 Spirit wards on the other side and a wandering 'Broken construct' in the tunnel beyond.

I mention this just because some people seem to think that once dropped into that pit, the only option is to zone into Brells or back to the zone entry.

Broken constructs and gargoyles are stupidly spell resistant. Came here with 70 mage and being lightblue it wasn't uncommon at all to have to cast malo at least 2 to 4 times each pull. If I didn't get a Malo off I could expect about 50% chance of my nuke being resisted.

Only thing I hate about EQ is spell resistant mobs. I have yet to find mobs I can't land melee attacks on. Sure there are some with high AC but at least your landing hits on them! Found the named ghost near underfoot zone and my pet had to do it all because I couldn't land ANYTHING on it and it was green.

So, I was bugging out reading the most current posts about entering The Hole. I had absolutely no problem being normal sized. All I did was cast Lev, EB and Invis (invis because I thought I would get ganked). Squoze through the hole in rocks and Bam there I was. Now I'm camping Elementals for the Binder and not a single mob over my level can be seem thus far at the entrance. And after clearing the main hall got the Binder. Happy Hunting.

I'm posting this because I just had to and there was nothing I could find that helped much to tell me.

I was on autofollow on my way to Gunthak. And I had just thought what a dangerous thing it was to be doing that at the top of the Hole when I went over the edge.

I landed safely in the water just by an indifferent NPC but with a lot of "Dead adventurer's corpses" on the ground. The map was unhelpful and the place is unrecognisable since I was last there.

Directly ahead of me was a face in the cliff. Going through the tunnel where the mouth was took me to a corridor ending in a swirling mist. entering that (on the basis that anywhere was better than the bottom of the Hole) took me back to the entrance right at the top but still inside the zone. This is where I got lucky as I was able to shrink and swim out through the crack.

Without Shrink I guess I'd have had to wait for a friend to run me some potions or find someone with a key.

I have been in this pit with the mist that you describe. Now, having never been to The Hole before, I don't
know what this was like before. But I got there by running through the city
portion of The Hole and jumping in the lake, swimming to a waterfall/ledge
and jumping off.

On EQAtlas, this spot is shown as where "Master Yael" spawns, with a (at
that time) entrance to the "Plane of Underfoot".

It's obvious that this "Plane" is the swirling mist. It's funny you
say you went through it and just ended up going back to the Evac
spot of The Hole. When I was there with my friend, he had the
same experience. However, when *I* went through, I ended up in
a new zone called "Brell's Rest". Why that swirling
mist works as "Evac" for one person, but "Zone to Brell's Rest" to another is
beyond me. I got back by just turning around in this new zone,
and saw that there was swirling mist behind me. I went through
it and ended up at the bottom of the pit where I started.

Oh, and yes, there was a bunch of "body of dead adventurer" scattered
around the bottom of that hole.

So....the jump to the bottom of that pit, which I'm told USED to kill
people but which also used to be "the way into the Hole, to avoid
the city" seems useless to me. There's no way out of that pit
except the swirling mist. Before that mist became a usable
exit, why would ANYONE have jumped into it (unless their
goal was to Kill Master Yael and then....gate everyone out?)
I jumped into this pit thinking that I could reach the
windows of the Undead Tower (my ultimate goal), but did not
succeed.

Anyway, from reading tons of posts, I agree that there needs to
be some definitive information on this part of The Hole.

I would venture a guess that the previous poster and your friend did not have the UF expansion, while you do. Them not having it means they can't zone into Brell's Rest, and were default zoned to the safe area of the city.

And you will get rolled back with the next patch. Went there yesterday for my epic 1.5 to farm Ball of Elemental Clay. At 65, got 1 AA per green kill... Since i had the chance to find all my clay and the Ancient Tome of Lost Lore, i have made a /bug report, i wantend to keep my items. GM confirmed there would be a roll back with next patch for those who used the glitch. So dont go there today, timewaste

Ok I get the new expansion coming out and we need to hype up all the high lvl people, but jeez!

I zone in with an UNBUFFED 85 ench, working on getting couple alts their 1.0s, with them in tow. Next thing i know out of the blue,more next turn, I run smack into these critters. Hitting the enchanter for 4k+

WTF was sony thinking!?! It isn't just that I died, but how exactly do they plan on people doing epic work to do their freaking epics .. SMOOTH MOVE

So, with that rant now being over, does anyone know if they plan on at least putting the mobs we need back in there? Maybe a date if anyone knows something?
Please help if you are able.

I feel your pain.

My 85 necro got jumped and died while I was scouting out the best route for my Paladin's epic mob.

How a 60's level Paladin can play in a zone where 85 level toons die is beyond me.

How come there is no written information about the 3 hidden teleport pads inside The Hole? In a secret passage in the undead city, there is 3 teleport pads, 1 goes to paineel, another goes to neriak 3rd gate, and another goes to erudin palace inside a jail cell. To think, all these years I've been playing eq and I had never fully explored the hole enough to realize this. It looks like its uncommon knowledge because it's not up on this website. Has this always been here since the start of EQ?

I can say that there is no need for safe fall or buffs to land the drop. I have been doing AA on my SK for a long time here and it seems that all you need to survive the fall is a good fast internet connection. When i attempt this at home i never have trouble making the landing. But i have tried on dialup and die every time. It appears that lag will kill you more than any other factor.

The Hole has mobs deeper that con green/light blue to a level 75....
this is advantageous over most PoP zones.....

Can be entered with shrunk, key, falling down hole with invuln,
You can sit/stand hotkey and get thru unshrunk.... but it is very hard
Alot easier with shrink.... i recommend shrink

So today, as a 64 erudites magician (12Khp buffed), i tried to jump into the hole, weight was 44, died.... hit for 200Kdmg dunno when they changed that but dmg taken are no longer 10K, so i was without buffs after respawn so i tried again, with mount, with trying to duck, to move, to land in water ... i spent about 1 hour dieing and dieing, trying every tricks that peeps here told us to work .... the ONLY thing i can't test is the safe fall thing. and now i'll use expedient recovery hehehe =)p

You can try WHAT you WANT if you haven't someone to make you invulnerable, you simply can't jump into the hole safely as of today 30/01/2009 6pm gmt-1, you'll be hitten for 200Kdmg.

the only safe way is get an invulnerability

the way you can test at your own risk is safe fall

a lot of jumping in to the hole has to do w/ where you hit, at the bottom, and if you've successfully clipped one or more slopes on the walls on the way down. if you clip a wall just right, it resets your fall distance. go figure.

if you manage to land in the water, yer golden.....

The less weight you are caryying, the less dmg you take. I get hit for 53 dmg on my necro when i zone in and he normally carries around 50 stones...when i jump in on my SHD, with a weight of around 150-160, i take around 10,000dmg

I got the changling to pop when i was doin the massive contructs, one pop in 2 hrs in this camp. I'm sure most know this but for 4 pp in baz on DR server Potion of Ant ,,, shrink .. ur in =) Might be lazy but for the limited amount of trips i make here 80pp for stack of ant pot's seemed reasonable....

If you have Depths of Darkhollow, just get the rogue shroud (I used the level 70 goblin one, just for the record) and some lockpicks (which can be bought in PoTranquility). No killing kobolds for faction. :P Rallia Hapera sold the "Hole Key" for a little less than 110 pp. Sorry if I didn't make that flowery enough for someone.

You cannot use lockpicks and rogue shroud as of today, 2-10-09. It gives a message that: You can't use pick lock on that. So you need to buy the key.

For the key activation you operate the elevator to get you into Paineel, you don't use the Pick Lock button, since you can't target it. You put lockpicks on your cursor and click or U.

Confirmed this works to get into regular Paineel and reach the vendor that sells Hole Key.

I have seen one, among the warrior mobs near the zone in. Killed Constructs for many hours and none of those were ever changleings.

as of 12/5/06 this is new hz for 40-45.Which is kind of confusing from what i have seen in the couple times i have ventured in that accursed place mobs are low 50ish,also the golems tend to have alot of hp which will be tough kills for xp!

At level 46, the earth elementals, and the golems right after the droppoff, are all light blue. I would suspect that they are fantastic exp at level 40, as I got a level in under 30 minutes with LOTD running, solo on my 46 mage alt.

Most hot zones give extra hp when u are above the levels, like 40-45 u can be 50 and it will be hot zone exp. And remeber EverQuest is intended to be a grouping game, not solo. a full group of 30's can take on mobs in the entrance of the hole. And i am very happy that this zone is a hot, it had good exp better, should be great now!
