If you are a good race the quest starts in West Freeport at the Paladin guild where you seek out Sir Artanis in the Halls of Truth at +820, -520, -125. If you are an evil race it starts in Neriak Third Gate cleric guild with Qrixat Du'voy in the cleric guild at +425, -810. The key trigger phrase for the quest-givers can be found within the EQ RPG GM Guide book.

Note that you must turn in the books in the proper order or you will get a message saying you should be careful with your valuable property.

Beginning of Quest (Good Version)

You say, 'I have received your summons.'

Sir Artanis says 'Yes ______, thank you for responding with such haste. The Knights of Marr recently captured a Teir'Dal wizard who under intense questioning revealed a variety of disturbing matters. First, he worships Solusek Ro, which is no crime, but considering the nearby temple's past associations with the Burning Dead, specifically Marnek about whom you recently delivered revelations, then his other information seems even more dire. Secondly, he has admitted that he was in Freeport attempting to contact the leaders of the Dismal Rage for he understood that they have nearly completed a phylactery, a device that holds the mortal soul of a lich. In light of this, we ask that you visit the Oracle of K'Arnon in the Ocean of Tears to learn whatever you can about the nature of these phylacteries, including the means to create one so that we better know how to destroy them. This letter will serve as proof that you come in the name of the Knights of Marr.'

Beginning of Quest (Evil Version)

You say, 'I have received your summons.'

Qrixat Du'voy says 'You have performed admirably in the past, so I shall overlook your tardiness responding to my call. One of our own has heeded the call of Solusek Ro over that of Innoruuk and is conspiring with that other traitorous cur, Opal Dark Briar. The wizard Salarz is a Teir'Dal now in the hands of the Knights of Marr in Freeport, but we have good information connecting him with the Dismal Rage and the Temple of Solusek Ro in a plot to create a phylactery. Somehow, this is connected to the news you brought from Befallen about the resurrection of Marnek. One who might know the answer is the oracle in the Ocean of Tears. Seek him out and learn what is required to create a phylactery so that we will remain one step ahead of any others. Go now and take this letter for the oracle with you!'

Meet the Oracle

At this point you receive a Letter for the Oracle. Take the letter to Oracle of K`Arnon at -20, -6730, -200 (updated revamp) in the Ocean of Tears. If you are KOS to the Oracle, you may charm him to turn in the letter. You may also raise your faction with him by completing the Book of Turmoil quest.

Oracle of K`Arnon says 'You walk a dangerous path if you seek to construct a phylactery. I can indeed assist you, but you must both pay my price of knowledge for knowledge and prove to me that you are capable of controlling the forces you might unleash. I seek six volumes of magical power and knowledge that are spread across the commonly known lands of Norrath and even beyond, in the planes. For each you bring me I shall instruct you on the next step in the process and provide you with one of the required pieces. Completing each step will require acquiring even more items. The process is time-consuming, but the power of a phylactery is such that it will benefit even a bearer who does not aspire to lichdom. When you are certain you are ready to begin, talk to my assistant, Jeyular and hand him. . . hmmm, where shall we start? I think it would be fitting to begin with a tome by the great lich himself, Miragul.'

You need to obtain a Tome of Miragul from An Ancient Construct in the Ruins of Old Paineel, a.k.a. The Hole. Give it to Assistant Jeyular, who stands next to the Oracle.

After the Tome of Miragul (Book 1)

Assistant Jeyular says 'An auspicious beginning. To reward your start, I will enlighten you with the secret of palatable mana, which is required to create a phylactery, but also has independent uses as well. Brew it like wine, but include a vial of mana as created by the ablest enchanters plus a pinch of this special sugar as well as grapes that can be grown only by the halflings of Rivervale. When you are ready to continue with the next step, return with the history of the Di'Zok and give it to me.'

You receive Sea-Foam Sugar. Now you need to obtain the History of the Di`zok from Loremaster Piza`tak in Chardok. Give the book to Jeyular.

After the History of the Di`zok (Book 2)

Assistant Jeyular says 'Excellent work. This book is not easily come by. This next step is the first of creating components for the phylactery itself, the silk insert. This is the base inside of the box and it must be made of durable stone silk to withstand the energies within a phylactery. When you are ready to continue with the next step, return the long-lost Journal of Aataltaal to me. His tomb is rumored to be in the Hills of Shade, and while I doubt this is true, rumor depends on some truths so somewhere nearby is where to discover this book.'

You receive an Insert Pattern. The Journal of Aataltaal is found in Kedge Keep off of Estrella of Gloomwater. Give the journal to Jeyular.

After the Journal of Aataltaal (Book 3)

Assistant Jeyular says 'Impressive, young one. I truly did not believe you would locate this volume. My instructions for constructing a phylactery shall continue. The third step requires the construction of the soul net -- the silken binding for inside the lid of the phylactery. This requires delicate and balanced threading that only the ablest fletchers can perform. To create this mystic mesh, you'll need the silk of a spider that itself deals with the immaterial as well as shadewood clips to attach the soul net to the lid of the phylactery. You must also use the glue I have given to you. When you are ready to continue, bring the book guarded by yet another spider, this one found in the Planes of Power.'

You receive Incorporeal Bond. The book is the Firebone Notebook off of Aramin the Spider Guardian. Give the book to Jeyular.

After the Firebone Notebook (Book 4)

Assistant Jeyular says 'My, my, you are serious about this effort, aren't you? This book is a excellent find from the Planes of Power and has earned you instructions for the fourth step in the process of creating a phylactery. A spellcaster may willingly give his soul to a phylactery to become a lich, but the process will not hold unless the phylactery can keep hold of the soul. The net snatches it, but a crucible of containment secures it. This sketch will help you get started, then you need merely follow similar, well-documented methods such as are used for a Crucible of Escape. The modifications should be obvious to one as talented as yourself. Also, the penultimate book I require is a bloody tome from Antonica.'

You receive a Crucible Sketch. The tome is the Sanguine Tome found in Cazic Thule. Give the tome to Jeyular.

After the Sanguine Tome (Book 5)

Assistant Jeyular says 'Thank you for this addition to my library. You're drawing close to the end of your quest. Only two more steps to complete and you will be glad to hear they are no more complicated than the first ones. The lids of the phylactery must be hinged and as no portion of the item can be of ordinary manufacture. You must fashion clasps of sealing. This mold will help you, but the Velium bits used must be enchanted and combined with a seemingly mundane object that yet holds great powers over the soul of an undead and weighs it down, anchoring it to this world. Undead elves especially are held here in this way. The results are then carefully filed smooth. Finally, the volume I require from you in exchange for the last information you require is the spellbook of the greatest living wizard on Velious.'

You receive a Clasp Mold. The final book is Velketor's Spellbook from Velketor himself in his eponymous Labyrinth. Give the book to Jeyular.

After Velketor's Spellbook (Book 6)

Assistant Jeyular says 'I am impressed by your efforts. The deeds are truly no less outstanding than my own when I stole into Miragul's Menagerie and stole a most unique tome and learned much of what I am passing along to you. The last step required of you will demand as much attention as all the prior travels and efforts to this point. Here is a decorated box I found in Miragul's laboratory that will form the substance of your phylactery. Once you have acquired and lacquered a precious garnet with the blood of a vampire, then apply the garnet and the five other pieces you've created to the decorated box and you'll have your prize. But remember, a precious garnet can be gained only from a god. As I find it unlikely you shall succeed in crafting a phylactery, and despite my payment in advice, allow me to thank you for your services in another [way].'

You receive a Decorated Box and a Token of Service. At this point you have all the recipes for the Phylactery which requires high tradeskills. If you don't have high tradeskills and are an int/wis caster you can continue on as follows to receive the robe or the tunic.

The Other Way

You say, 'What way?'

Assistant Jeyular says 'Look for Raotin Teawel, I believe he can be found on an island somewhere nearby where you would acquire a robe or tunic of Kael, Skyshrine or Thurgadin manufacture. Take one of those items and my token of service when you are ready and he shall share with you his newest creation, a robe or tunic of great power. If you are not satisfied with your robe or tunic, hand it to the Guardian of K'Arnon and he will exchange it for you.'

Raotin Teawel is on Aviak Island in Ocean of Tears at +1550, +4100 post-revamp. He didn't respond to hails or any sort of trigger phrase that I could think of, so I bit the bullet and handed him my Beguiler's Robe and the Token of Service from the assistant.

Raotin Teawel says 'Your promised reward.'

Int casters receive the Grand Robe of the Oracle and Wis casters receive the Grand Tunic of the Oracle. If you receive the incorrect reward (if someone has only partially completed the quest before you), you may hand in your reward for the alternate reward. The Plane of Growth Robe would not work for the quest.

Details on the tradeskills portion of the quest will be added as they become available. Assistant-given quest items appear to be returned if you fail the recipe.

Palatable Mana (Tradeskills Step 1: Brewing)

Quest item from assistant: Sea-Foam Sugar
Additional quest item: Moon-Harvested Grapes

The halfling mentioned by Assistant Jeyular after you hand in the Tome of Miragul is the "epicurean halfling," which may be found in Misty Thicket outside the wall at +885, +85. You must hail him during the daytime.

You say, 'Hail, epicurean halfling'

epicurean halfling says 'Hmmm. . . What? Oh sorry, I was snoozing. I was up throughout last night harvesting my [grapes] by the light of the moon.'

You say, 'What about your grapes?'

epicurean halfling says 'Why, my magic moon-harvested grapes, of course. I will give you some to sample if you would [help] me.'

You say, 'What help do you need?'

epicurean halfling says 'The specially-prepared soil that grows the vines for my grapes is becoming muddy again. I need more of the magical sand from the deserts of Ro to mix with my soil. Bring me that and I will give you some grapes.'

Give him Sand of Ro.

epicurean halfling says 'Thank you so much. Here are the grapes I promised you. They may not look like much, but master brewers tell me they are required for many magical wines, including some sought by the most powerful magic-workers.'

You receive Moon-Harvested Grapes. Note: you can still give him Sand of Ro at night to receive the grapes.

Experimentation has produced the following brewing recipes. Note that the sugar and grapes are NOT returned on combine.

My 110 halfling rogue was told by Sir Artanis after repeating the phrase "I have received your summons":

"I am afraid you are of the wrong profession to complete this quest. I am truly sorry."

Looks like it is possible to do this quest at any level. Sir Artanis gave my 20 cleric the note. Will update once I've obtained the tunic.
Question..
# Feb 20 2008 at 8:05 AM Rating: Decent
I have not completed this quest yet but I was wondering...

Has anyone tried using different types of the palatable mana in the combine, I see there are 5 types? I'm just wondering if perhaps there are different recipes to create different phylactery's. Also, I noticed that When you exchange the Dark Phylactery for the regular one he says something about attempting the changes yourself, perhaps the mana crystals could be used to alter the item somehow /shrug.

When i talk to Qrixat Du'voy in neriak, she tells me "Your particular 'talents' are not needed for this task. I am sure you can find something else to occupy your time. Now be gone."
Does that mean i need better faction, or that i just cant do the quest? Because i thought they changed it so that any class can do it?

Later I decided to shroud to a caster type and try to go get my letter...... and it worked, but they hated me alot more, factions in Neriak dropped from Indifferent with the quest mob to Dubious, and the guards went from low indifferent to KoS... so you need to be careful if you try it like this.

You can also perform the Red Wine Quest to raise your faction. This worked for my Erudite which she did not want to give the quest to.

Bottle of Red Wine:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=159

Raises 3 Neriak factions.

Also perhaps you spelled the word received wrong? I miss spelled that word the first time. LOL.

As of just recently you can only MQ the quest pieces obtained in Kael within your class. I tried MQ'ing a Torn Enchanted Silk Robe between me (a wizard) and my own enchanter - the enchanter quest NPC in Thurgadin will talk to me (I'm max ally) but upon handing her the torn robe she replies "I need nothing from a wizard" and hands it back.

This used to work - SOE has changed it sometime in the past 6 months. I had successfully MQ'd various pieces with the magician and beastlord NPCs not too long ago.

I did successfully MQ the very same robe today (26/11/06) with the wizard NPC in Thurgadin and a fellow guildy's wizard now has the quest robe.

So it looks as though MQ'ing is still possible albeit with restrictions. If you have non-class related quest pieces in yer bank ya may as well drop them in the ol' trash bin ... /sigh.

# Jan 05 2006 at 2:08 PM Rating: Decent
After six months of part-time working on tradeskills, and also on this quest, I finally got all six of the combines completed...however, I seem to have misplaced my Decorated Box. I have the Grand Robe of the Oracle equipped, so I have to have received it, but when I petitioned, I was informed that the gm's couldn't find any record of me having the item in the first place. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get this box any other way?

Thank you =)

#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 11 2005 at 12:22 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I find it rather harsh , considering the enormous amount of slack given casters for every aspect of game play from some haveing insta-gate, insta-invis, insta-mana , insta-click like crazy toys .. plus their spells, weapon procs, etc. , that only casters and priests can get this regen item. Seems a perfect offset for melee, but so far melee arent allowed this quest. Astounding that there are any players NOT having caster mains since SOE apparently does not like melee class. As a morbidly fanatic monk, im jealous, naturally. But being the only class that cant slow their mobs, click heal themselves better than 100 hp every 30 seconds (useless now that 10k hp is more common than not for raid guilds), <OMG i could fill pages with clickies everyone BUT monks get>, i have to ask "WHY ? ". Necro's, Bards, SK's... who else can FD now.. oh ya.. with Potions.. nearly everyone seems to be able to .. but monks still get shafted cause we can FD. I have my original necro toon.. that , yep.. im working again. Like they say "cant beat em or be equal to em.. join em or kill em". Apparently im not alone in this thinking.. try finding a tank that's not an alt now. They getting scarce. And not many monks around that arent alts, also. Why have one ? other classes have better toys to pull with , lull with , slow / stun / snare with ... and the pullers can FD / insta invis / insta-gate and return / be CoH'd away from agro... who's got the patience to wait on a monk FD to shake agro so he/she can try again ? No unique skills , no clickie toys to make it fun to be a monk... even the illusion clickies that used to be < being able to pretend for a while sure is a mental bonus when you can't do squat without some caster / buffer giving it to you > have been either severely nerfed or completely eliminated. I wonder if im the only one who tried to get the DN Erudite illusion part of a quest, spending a couple weeks there killing rats, to finally realize that it's vaporware (link on magelo's) .. i think this was about the last bit of endurance i had for "doing without" .. /sigh... doesnt leave much to look foreward to when you get to the char select and have to decide , "monk = depend on everyone for any buffs and yu dont get any toys" or "Caster = got all the spells, toys , clickie heals / regen / mana / etc " ... there gotta be play time to kill the monotony .. and monks are the bottom of the list for such .. boring boring boring. An yes, im unable to express how i feel about the erudite clickie i found to be a false item .. without being banned.
RE: Phylactery
# Aug 14 2005 at 10:36 AM Rating: Default
This post is hilarious, considering the monk class was originally conceived as one which abstained from weapons/items.

Really, though, casters get clickie items, because casters are "magic-users" and thus have the advantage of "using" "magic." It's not a difficult concept. My old monk fought with his bare hands, and wore nothing but a raw silk robe until level 30. :)
#REDACTED, Posted: Aug 20 2005 at 8:17 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You indicated "your old monk".. i seem to read into this that you also tired of the sameness of just being able to FD. You do have a point , monks werent magic users. But lore has it that they could "walk unseen among men", "pass thru objects undetected"... lol.. we get a 3rd rate gnomish vanisher that likely will fail invis within 10 seconds as not.. If we're to be held to the standards of monks.. let us the abilities. Invis as innate and nearly fool-proof. Lev as others cannot. See inately what others cannot, go without air easily because of the training of our bodies. all this is absent as many other qualities believed of monks. If they gonna do it do it well. Didnt monks have the insane ablility to self heal way past the ablilites of untrained men ? Seems our regen is no more than anyone elses (Iksar do have more.. but ive been both iksar and human monk > 65 with well over 150 aa and the Iksar penalty for that regen drove me to making my human, which in the same amount of time as my 65 iksar with 158 aa, achieved 70 with over 250 aa. I love my monk, and the clickies are artificial... a device used by those who have not the innate or magical ablility within themselves. Monks were able to move so fast their opponents saw only a blur.. pretty much as how everyone else's slow clickies would work unless SOE decided to actually make us that fast. I dont see the harm in allowing us clickie illusions.. they dont affect faction if you've any diety other than agnostic and with the expansions now, who cares about old world factions ? It's not like we go there much. Its just a fun play-toy that we cannot have, lost in the list of such toys that others play with. Potions ? They arent clickies, they're void when you zone, they're expensive to maintain. I'll still be a monk even though i spend time playing my alts. I'd rather have the option of not having to. Funny how a simple clickie illusion, for example, can lighten a dull camp and suddenly the endless hours arent so boring. And face it, if i've learned little else, i did find that camps tend to be a bit longer than "reasonable" would stand for. Of course i may be out of line there... as most people probably find the monotonous killing of the same mob till you camp to play something else an extremely rare case... as the drops are plentiful and rapid. NOT !! Im not asking for res stick, insta click lev, complete heals, insta click invis , insta click evac or even mana... just a harmless toy to pass the boredom, that doenst have to be recharged. Warriors arent magic either.. i'd give a full level to have the clickies they get.
RE: Phylactery
# Aug 31 2005 at 9:51 AM Rating: Default
lets see here. every class has their own clickies. also phylactery can be obtained by ne one. also the majority of items in eq are melee usbable. also making monks so absurdly powerful with all of those innate things would be insanely unfair to other classes, and not in eq lore. in eq lore says that some monks could- and they still can. heres some good clickies for melee///pegasus feather cloak, shrunken goblin earring, aon, j boots.

what i do have to say though is that a lot of items in raid are given to casters due to mana/ft/casting benefits ie ee,mp,er and such.

finally this item is in no way easy to get. the robe if easy and CAN be done by a level 1, if they got the pp, making this the best twink robe in the game. the kael bp can be mq'ed to make it, all u need is the buyable gems and faction, and another person can get the mold to turn in. the actualy phlactery in lore is something in which it stores its sould to keep alive, even if destroyed, hence forth why it should be given to casters if u follow lore.

To the best of my knowledge, this quest is still working. However, you can only start the quest if you are a priest or INT caster -- CLR, DRU, SHM, ENC, NEC, MAG, or WIZ.

At the last Fan Faire (and the one before that), I bounced around some ideas with the developers on how to make this quest open for all. We'll see if they implement any of them.

Not so, actually. The Oracle, his assistant and his guardian are all on a faction that is called "Oracle of Karnon" and despite what the Oracle says when you kill him you take no negative faction hit with the Dark bargainers for killing him.

# Mar 30 2005 at 10:03 AM Rating: Decent
This post is for those people who worked hard on this quest only to be disappointed by losing due to a MQ. THE MQ DOES NOT WORK, I REPEAT IT DOES NOT WORK. THE NPC WILL EAT YOUR TOKEN OF SERVICE AND THE KAEL MQ ITEM. This just happened to me last night. IF you want to do this quest, you must turn in both the token of service and the kael item yourself, DO NOT MQ. You have been warned.

Im more curious atm about furthuring my smithing skill using the enchanted velium bits for this part of the quest but I was under the impression they were something about aiding Gimly or whatever of which i haven't looked into yet, this was my first stop. Could the smithing part of this still be done without have done the rest even though Im doubting it from the the looks of it....would be doing it on my pally instead of my shaman btw.

The enchanted velium bits you can do at any skill level. The Aid Grimmel smithing combine has several prerequisites. First is you need the full flag for having killed Bertox (Grummus, Carprin, Bert) and a raw smithing skill (unmodified by geerlok) of 220. The Aid Grimmel breastplate essentially will skill you up from 220 to 227 (where it trivials). It's very cheap, but does require you to travel between the top of the library in PoK and a forge each time you wish to do the combine. You can use a combination of gating, leving, CotHing, to try to speed it up. Oh, you'll also need a brewing 210+ to make the tempers (or buy them from someone who already made them). EQTraders has a decent write up on the Aid Grimmel quest if you want more info.

edit: apparently, you cannot attempt the enchanted velium bits till your modified smithing skill is 165 (158+5%). Also, the requirement for the high level brewer is for making the ethereal sheets/rings (the two 'free' points from 210-212), only a moderate brewing skill is needed for the aid grimmel smithing temper stuff.

Hey Ttarkatt,
You are right, the velium combine for the bits is one anyone can do, just the finished product is useless to them. As far as an Aid Gimley thing that can be done, i think you are confusing it with the few combines that can be made for the ornate armors that there is a way to go up a few points in smithing using a geerlok device. It's odd, b/c the trivial for the combines is 212, and the required skill is 220. So a geerlok will raise your skill from 210 to 220, making it possible to get two "easy" skillups.

Pretty sure this was changed ot be caster and priest only, since the tunic, robe and one of the phylacteries are not hybrid wearable.

Take translocator to Sister Island and swim to the Aviak Island. That is the only way to the island that I know of atm.
Only for Priests & Casters now?

I collected everything I needed for this quest, all 6 books, all the subcombine materials, and so forth, so that from the moment I talked to the first NPC I could be done with the quest in about 30-45 minutes... due to some running around, zoning etc.

Well today I went to hail Sir Artanis, I told him "I have received your summons." His reply: "I am afraid you are of the wrong profession to complete this quest. I am truly sorry."

I said to myself, "Ok hmm, maybe I just cannot get the note from him, but perhaps I can still just hand in the books to complete it." So I headed to OoT, found the oracle, talked to him a bit, he didn't hint that I could start it there. So I just decided to bite the bullet and hand in a book, I started with Journal of Aal. as I figured that was the most common book... this is the text I got in RED: "I did not ask you to bring this to me. You may have it back. You should be careful who you hand powerful items to in the future, my friend."

So I thought, well maybe I can't hand them in out of order. So I handed him the 1st book, the tome of miragul... he repeated the same text in red.

So as of today at least, I do not think that it is possible to complete this quest unless you are a priest or a caster. (Caster meaning, Enchanter, Necromancer, Magician, or Wizard)

On the upside, I guess I have one hell of a twink kit here.

Oh sorry, by the way, I tried this quest as a Level 70 Human Paladin.

Edit: Before anyone suggests I was handing the books to the oracle himself, I want to confirm I was handing the books into the assistant, as the write-up indicates.

Cleric BP may still work, SK as of Nov. 10 does not for sure.

Yea i know this may be a long shot but thought i would throw it out could this maybe somehow have something to do with creating a manastone or making a manastone useable in zones outside old world? Has anyone tried messing around with these + mana stone combining in something?

This quest Involves, handing in 6 books, The Fiery avenger Quest you get "Mirguals Phylactery" By handing the 2 havles of the book of scale... umm you don't suspose that ahh this is the missing link cause 99 percent of pallies will do the skip quest if they want there epic 1.5 and so forth, why not keep the quest partially active by having in incorporated into a new 1.. maybe if someone has Obtained the Mirguals Phylactery recently see if it has gained a TS flag. Anyways just a thought.
Mana Crystals
# Nov 01 2004 at 5:41 AM Rating: Decent
You know ever since i had done this Phylactery Quest, been checking every patch, expansion, for them to maybe gain a tradeskill flag, From what i remember there was rumors that once u create the phylacerty, you were to use it to trap the soul of Mirgual to fight off one of the demi gods, now when i read that i was like sweet!!~~, So went to go kill miragul but nothing came of it (yes I know he is for pally epic) i'm not game enough to give him the mana crystals hehe (Charmed, but probably nerfed like most things), but when i read the text from the assistant." Ok you want to make your own alterations", makes sense now, you can look at the mana crystals either being, the battery for a drained source ( Mirguals soul to charge it) or just an extra result from the creation of such a complex item which has some unknown useage as to how you can alter your Phylactery.

I know probably not implemented yet, but I love deep text quests like these, not just go kill mob a to get reward b. If it's not implentmented would love to see it in soon, and if you have any additional info please feel free to share.
