Find Vidi Cogsworthy in Ak'Anon at +830, -130 at King Ak'Anon's building.

You say, 'Hail, Vidi Cogsworthy'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Wha? Who are you? Go away! You're breaking my [concentration].'

You say, 'Your concentration?'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Yes, I'm trying to concentrate on my calculations! You see, I discovered yesterday that based upon the gnomish arm-torso aspect ratio our current [armor] designs are actually patterned with suboptimal. . . Sub. . . Uh. . .. Blast! You've broken my concentration!'

You say, 'What armor?'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Yes, well, before you interrupted me I was trying to redesign Ak'Anon's armor patterns. I believe with my newest calculations, I can increase the efficiency of our designs by a significant margin. Assuming, of course, I can finish my calculations. It's hard to work with strangers running up and hailing me all day!' Vidi sighs and then continues, 'Tell you what, if you leave me alone, I'll make you a pattern book with my new designs. Would you be [interested] in that, or perhaps you're more interested in [symbols] I've been studying?'

You say, 'I am interested'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Great. To make you a pattern book, I'll need some zombie skin and darkbone marrow from the Estate of Unrest. I can use those to create the parchment and ink for the book. I'll also need some of the battle beads from Crushbone to help bind the book and a preserved orc hide to create the cover. While you're out gathering these things, I can finish my calculations. Hopefully in peace!'

Quest Items to get your Ancestral Book:
Darkbone Marrow, Zombie Skin, Crushbone Battle Beads, Preserved Orc Hide

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Hey, it's you! Here's your book. Turns out my protractor was broken and I miscalculated the average angle of incidence of the gnomish shoulder blade. So, uh, you may feel some tightness in your left shoulder when wearing armor made by this pattern book. Just don't do any jumping jacks and you should be fine. Otherwise my design was a huge improvement! Best of luck, ______!'

You say, 'Symbols?'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'These symbols when used in conjunction with my improved armor can improve them even more! If you're interested in them I have some [work] that you could do to earn some patterns for them.'

You say, 'What work?'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'I need you to do a bit of exploration and gathering for me. My inventions always require various new components and I just don't have the time to get them myself. There are several different places I need things from so you have your pick. You could head to [Crushbone], [the Hole] in Paineel, [Skyfire Mountains], or to the [Lavaspinner's Lair].'

Journeyman's Book of Gnomish Culture

You say, 'Crushbone.'

You have been assigned the task 'Orcish Expedition'.

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Crushbone as you probably know is filled with orcs. I need you to head there and take care of their legionnaires as they've always caused problems for me when I went there to research. While you're doing that bring back some of their teeth to show me what you've accomplished.'

Task Details:

Crushbone: Kill 20 legionnaires
Crushbone: Loot 2 Rotting Orc Tooth
Ak'Anon: Deliver 2 Rotting Orc Tooth to Vidi Cogsworthy
Crushbone: Kill 10 orc emissaries
Crushbone: Loot 1 Orc Ribcage
Ak'Anon: Deliver 1 Orc Ribcage to Vidi Cogsworthy

Vidi takes the rib cage from you and throws it into the water. 'Nasty things, I just wanted to make sure you'd really killed them. Maybe now they'll think twice before interfering with the great Vidi Cogsworthy! And of course here are the patterns I mentioned.'

You receive the Journeyman's Book of Gnomish Culture.

Expert's Book of Gnomish Culture

You say, 'The Hole.'

You have been assigned the task 'Mercury Recovery'.

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'The Hole can be a very dangerous place, you'll need to be careful out there. One of the bigger hazards are the elemental warriors. I require the mercury that flows through their veins for my latest invention, the mercury drip clock.'

Task Details

Ruins of Old Paineel: Kill 50 elemental warriors
Ruins of Old Paineel: Loot 10 Drop of Mercury
Ak'Anon: Deliver 4 Drop of Mercury (unstacked) to Vidi Cogsworthy
Ruins of Old Paineel: Kill 5 elemental monstrosities
Ruins of Old Paineel: Loot 1 Drop of Mercury
Ak'Anon: Deliver 1 Drop of Mercury to Vidi Cogsworthy

(dialogue and task information needed)

You receive the Expert's Book of Gnomish Culture.

Master's Book of Gnomish Culture

You say, 'Skyfire Mountains.'

You have been assigned the task 'Scales of Skyfire'.

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Watch out when you're in Skyfire, there's all sorts of nasty things there, but some wonderful components for my inventions. I need you to go hunt some old wurms for me. I've run out of my supply of wurm meat.'

Task Details
Skyfire Mountains: Kill 80 wurms
Skyfire Mountains: Loot 40 Wurm Meat
Ak'Anon: Deliver 4 Wurm Meat to Vidi Cogsworthy
Skyfire Mountains: Kill 5 skyfire drakes
Skyfire Mountains: Loot 1 Skyash Bile
Ak'Anon: Deliver 1 Skyash Bile to Vidi Cogsworthy

Vidi snatches the skyash bile from your hands. 'Ah ha! This is perfect I must get to work on it right away. Before I forget here's those patterns you wanted.'

You receive the Master's Book of Gnomish Culture.

Grandmaster's Book of Gnomish Culture

You say, 'Lavaspinner's Lair.'

You have been assigned the task 'The latest in clockworks!'.

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'You'll never guess what new creation I'm working on now. A clockwork animal! No, no, no not one of those that have been made before, an entirely new type of animal. But I seem running low on claws for it The poor thing has to be able to defend itself after all. I need you to go get me some claws from the drakes in the lair. Those claws are highly resistant to heat and so will be perfect for my Felostiporaus.'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'The claws I'm after can only be found on the elder drakes. You may need to talks with the operatives in the Lavastorm Mountains for some help finding them.'

You must be in a Dragons of Norrath mission to get the drops you need.

Task Details
Lavaspinner's Lair: Kill 120 delve drakes
Lavaspinner's Lair: Loot 80 Fractured Drake Claw
Ak'Anon: Deliver 4 Fractured Drake Claw to Vidi Cogsworthy
Lavaspinner's Lair: Kill 10 Lavaspinner Spiders
Lavaspinner's Lair: Loot 1 Deadly Arachnid Mandibles
Ak'Anon: Deliver 1 Deadly Arachnid Mandibles to Vidi Cogsworthy

Vidi snatches the mandibles from you and dances gleefully in a circle, 'Hahahaha! I can finish the Felostiporaus now! No one will ever regard clockworks the same again. Here are the diagrams I promised you. Now leave me be to get my work finished.'

You have been given: Grandmaster's Book of Gnomish Culture

Note: the Ak'Anon Forge may be found at +1225, -730, outside the Forge of Defiance. There are two forges next to each other, but only one will work for the combines.

You say, 'work'

Artisan Vidi Cogsworthy says, 'I need you to do a bit of exploration and gathering for me. The symbols need a certain amount of... Inspiration. I find that I do not have time to go out into the world and be inspired. I will give you an impression book that you can use to make impressions of certain patterns that you find out in the world. This book will magically take deep impressions or even just surface patterns. All of it is useful for inspiration. You may do as many of the tasks as you wish, but each requires a slightly different book.

A "task window" pops up with 4 options:
Blessed Impressions
Dark Hollow Geode
Revered Impressions
Sacred Impressions
Also offers Depths of Darkhollow cultural

Not clear in the write-ups but you get this tome from doing the first step in the quest series under: •Gnome Cultural Armor (DoN). Simple enough, obtain 2 drops in Unrest and 2 drops in Crushbone. Ancestral Gnomish Armor book is your reward!

All of the recipes for DoN cultural armor changed. We don't have all the new recipes entered by any means.

EQTradersCorner often has the latest information for this sort of thing.

For the New quest for Tinkering Mastery search for the NPC listed for Tinkering Supplies and hail him. He will have you tinker up a Stalking Probe (trivial 102), return that to him and he gives you all 3 books to scribe for Tinkering Mastery 1, 2, and 3.

Ok this is getting really frustrating. I can get the kills for the drakes in Tirrums and Lavaspinners. The fractured drake claws supposedly only count from the missions, but they dont count from nest or creator missions. WHERE do they actually count from??

I've found that the Fractured Drake claws drop from the Missions mostly. Like The Drake menance or Grounding of the Drakes. I have a count of 15 so far from them.

I did the Journeyman's Book of Gnomish Culture quest at level 53. I also had the Mercury Recovery task in my task list. After the last turn in for the Journeyman's Book, I did not receive the book. I think SoE may have made it so that if you're too high level you don't get the low level one.

There are two forges right next to each other. The one closest to the bridge going to the bank/zoo/brewing merchants is the cultural forge.

See the pretty red dot here:
http://img19.echo.cx/img19/5676/akanon9gn.jpg

I got really angry when all my combines were DNC, in the wrong forge that looked exactly like the right forge :)

If you tried in both and it still didn't work then there's a problem with the items you are using.

I skipped that level partially for that reason, and am now working on the GM as it's good for DoN faction too, ie I may be able to talk people into grouping there. :)

I still wear the expert's gear, too bad nobody wants to buy it and the combines are not vendorable. Looks like they don't want you to use it as a skillup path either.

I'm killing delve drakes in lavaspinner and have killing about 40 of the 120 needed but i can't find any of the fractured drak claws. I've found some fractured drak claws in thundercrest during one of the missions there recovering some plant but the claws didn't count as the claws for the quest.I'm just wondering if anyone has seen the claws needed to complete the gm part of the quest. And as a side note during my killings i never saw any elder drakes with my eye of tallon anyone got info on them?

The items you have to loot may only count if looted form the mobs you are tasked to kill, or so it seems. I as able to loot about 30 Drop of Mercury, but only the ones looted from the Elemental Warriors counted in the firts part of my symbol task.

Here's a question for you, can you have a friend charm one of these mobs, hand it X items you have to loot, break charm, and then let you kill it? Do the items show up on the mob then? Do they count? And is that ok game play or something of an exploit?

After hours of camping the yard trash in The Hole don't think I wasn't considering it... I got maybe 28% of lvl 56 on those things alone... I'd really like to see the drops rates increased.

Yes, if you charm a mob and hand it the items you can recover them from it's corpse.

Yes, the items recovered by this count towards your total.

Maybe, it might be considered an exploit...... but considering the low drop rate of drops of mercury and the fact my main is a follower of Brell I was going to pull any stunt I could to avoid killing any more of Brell's Minions than I absolutely had to.

Charming an NPC, giving it an item, killing it and looting the item

Once you kill the 50 ele Wars and loot 10 Drop of Mercury then you have to hand 4 em back to NPC. Then you have to go back, kill 5 Elemental Monstrosities and loot (thank god) just 1 Drop of Mercury from one of the dead Elemental Monstrosities. Then you hand 1 Drop of Mercury back to Vidi for your Expert's Book.

I've been cleaning the mobs in the hallway entrance to the Hole for days now. Killing 50 Elemental Warriors is no problem, but getting them to drop the Drop of Mercury is a bummer. When I hit 50 kills I only had 2 Drop of Mercury drop. The loot tables are pretty random, and I've gotten a full set of Loam Encrusted armor already, but only 7 Drop of Mercury. Other mobs in here like the Crusaders and the Monstrosities also drop the Drop of Mercury, but it doesn't count towards your task. Also, if group members kill an Ele Warrior it counts, but if they loot a Drop of Mercury it doesn't. Hopefully I'll finish tonight and have something neat to post :)

Well, if you have a chanter in the group, charm the Elemental Warriors, give them the drop of mercury, kill it and loot it, thats the way I did a couple of em. The drop rate on The Rathe seemed to be pretty good for me personally.

You say, 'Hail, Vidi Cogsworthy'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Wha? Who are you? Go away! You're breaking my [concentration].'

You say, 'concentration'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Yes, I'm trying to concentrate on my calculations! You see, I discovered yesterday that based upon the gnomish arm-torso aspect ratio our current [armor] designs are actually patterned with suboptimal. . . Sub. . . Uh. . .. Blast! You've broken my concentration!'

You say, 'armor'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Yes, well, before you interrupted me I was trying to redesign Ak'Anon's armor patterns. I believe with my newest calculations, I can increase the efficiency of our designs by a significant margin. Assuming, of course, I can finish my calculations. It's hard to work with strangers running up and hailing me all day!' Vidi sighs and then continues, 'Tell you what, if you leave me alone, I'll make you a pattern book with my new designs. Would you be [interested] in that, or perhaps you're more interested in [symbols] I've been studying?'

You say, 'interested'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'Great. To make you a pattern book, I'll need some zombie skin and darkbone marrow from the Estate of Unrest. I can use those to create the parchment and ink for the book. I'll also need some of the battle beads from Crushbone to help bind the book and a preserved orc hide to create the cover. While you're out gathering these things, I can finish my calculations. Hopefully in peace!'

You say, 'symbols'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'These symbols when used in conjunction with my improved armor can improve them even more! If you're interested in them I have some [work] that you could do to earn some patterns for them.'

You say, 'work'

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'I need you to do a bit of exploration and gathering for me. My inventions always require various new components and I just don't have the time to get them myself. There are several different places I need things from so you have your pick. You could head to [Crushbone], [the Hole] in Paineel, [Skyfire Mountains], or to the [Lavaspinner's Lair].'

You say, 'I pick Skyfire Mountains'
Nota Bene, I had to say "I pick" or the NPC would not respond

Vidi Cogsworthy says 'I appreciate your willingness to assist me in my work, but I'm afraid the tasks I would ask of you in that area would be a bit outside your abilities. Perhaps once you have gained a bit of skill you could return.'

You say, 'I pick The Hole'
