This task is the third in a series of three. It begins with Shaytherrin the Exorcist in Blightfire Moors (located in the caravans near Roanoak at the northern edge of the camp: +31 +615).

Although it is a "solo" task, a group would ensure things run smoothly.

Shaytherrin the Exorcist says, 'Well done. Now that you have the battle crests, you are ready to confront Defan, the Captain of the [Dark Tower].'

You say, 'I am ready to confront the captain of the Dark Tower'

Shaytherrin the Exorcist says 'Excellent. It looms far to the northwest. Here's the plan of attack.'

You have been assigned the task 'The Dark Tower: Lord of the Tower'.

Deliver the Watchtower Battle Crests to Defan 0/1 (Blightfire Moors)

Defeat Defan the Watch Captain 0/1 (Blightfire Moors)

Head to the Dark Tower's second floor and see Defan the Watch Captain. Give him the Watchtower Battle Crest.

Defan the Watch Captain seethes with rage when he sees the captured crests of his minions. 'You know not who you trifle with mortal,' he says. 'I am Defan, Captain of the Watch Tower!'

With a Flickering Torch on your cursor, click on A Torch to open a trade window. Hit "done" to trigger torch effect, which weakens the Captain. There is also a "signal torch" in the top of the tower.

Defan the Watch Captain says 'The light! It burns!'

Defan the Watch Captain says 'Hah! You're pathetic! Flee now or face your doom atop this tower!'

Defan the Watch Captain says 'The light! It burns!'

Fight him until he spawns at the top of the tower (one floor up from his room) at full health. Bats and rats will spawn to assist him. Defan summons, rampages, flurries, dispells, fears.

You have slain Defan the Watch Captain!

Shaytherrin the Exorcist says, 'The Dark Tower trembles! You have banished a great evil from these moors and made the roads safe once again. Please, take this reward as payment for your service to our cause! May the fire of Veeshan guide you.'

Your faction standing with Circle of the Crystalwing got better.
    You gain experience!!

First of all, should seriously consider whether to bother with this incredible PITA quest. It is buggy, complicated, long, dangerous and the rewards are mediocre as mentioned below. There are many ways for it to fail, not including bugs.

Since you are likely to fail many times the first thing to know is how to do it again (and again). If it fails, you can not just go back down to the boss and kill him again, even if he respawns right away, which he does not always.

You have to go back to the quest giver, delete your quest, and hail it again. It will offer the quest again and give you a new green Watchtower Battle Crest . Then you need to get all the way back up there again.

If you can invis to undead then you can leave the rest of your party up in the lower boss room because adds don't come up very often there unless you bring them.

This tower has lots of adds and fast respawns. You have to move fast.

Some people use invis to undead to sneak by. This does it the Ogur way - run in and smash stuff.

    Prereqs:
    a) Watchtower Battle Crest
    b) lots of Flickering Watchtower Torches -- at least 10, 20 may be better.

    1) Bring friends. dps and heals are important. Bring mercs too. Make sure you are in the same group as the person who will do the damage to kill it. If not, no credit for you. And ... then you do it all over again.
    2) Clear the area around the entrance first -- the sergeants, etc. -- so the ground floor guys don't add when you are up the ramp in the tower.
    3) After clearing the ground floor you can move to the area across the room directly to the back of the entrance. The ramp upstairs is next to it.
    4) Work your way up the ramp and clear the mobs until you get to the 3rd floor (2nd Euro) and see Defan the Watch Captain. You can usually sneak past the gang on the lower floor that you had to kill in the previous step.

Get ready for the fight. He will periodically spawn bats and rats in both stages that need to be prevented by using the torches or you will be overwhelmed.
You will be busy using the torches so it's way easier if you have someone else, even a merc, to attack the boss while you do that.

    1) Get your torches ready to be used.
    2) Hail the boss. BE SURE to HAIL him first.
    3) Give him the Battle Crest
    4) IMMEDIATELY run to the torch pillars and use one of your torches to "give" it to the pillar. This is very hard to target. It is a pita. You may only be able to give two. In that case, focus on the boss.
    5) Burn the boss down to 40-50% and he will despawn to upstairs.

If you don't run upstairs quickly, the boss despawns and you have to do it all over again.

Upstairs there is only one place to use the torches.
    1) Use the torch (if you can)
    2) Attack the boss
    3) Keep feeding torches into the brazier (they only last about 5 sec so you want to have a lot of them depending on your dps.
    4) You do have a very short amount of time between doing the torches and attacking the boss but you really want to have someone else burn down the boss -- preferably high dps.

If you don't do the torches, you will eventually get buried in bats and rats.

When the boss dies, the reward window will pop up in your face even though you are probably still in the middle of the battle with the bats and rats. Kinda distracting. Probably a good idea to read the post above so you know which reward you want so you can clear that window out of your face.

NOTE : Historian Pewdri's Task is done in the same area (actually the room below) so you might want to grab it too.

was able to light two torches (on the left side of the room as entered) but the other two would not accept. maybe only works after getting him solid? anyway, he ported out at 50% and took pet with him, leaving me with bats and healer merc trying to work on both of us. I died. now where is he, since quest is still active but he's not in his room or on top of the tower

Fight Defan in the room just before the blocked path. At 40% he gates to the top of the tower. You then can go up the path that was bloscked to finish him

I have been trying all weekend to complete this task. I have started over at least 3 times and this last time, there was a large block of wall barring the path. It said the Captain of the guard had blocked the path. I cant get around or over it. I did send a merc over to kill a guard but it wouldn't let me over, so I couldn't get near the top and the signal fire. Anyone else have this problem? What can I do?

Hmm it worked for me recently. Boxed it with 45 rogue, 45 druid, war merc and cleric merc. At the top, engaged with rogue and war merc assisted, cleric healed and used the druid to feed the fire. Easy peasy.

It didn't work right for me last time I did it, but I was 83ish level. I killed the Guard the old way (just beat him down instead of using the item torches on the NPC torches (which weren't reducing his health like they were suppose to). Then I just keep running up the steps until eventually you get past the warp back, but just killing Defan finished the task. The way it used to work is once he got so low (around 50%) he would port to the roof and the invisible blockage would be removed and you could go up there and finish him off, and would get an emote or something about the signal fire.

I thought it was maybe just a fluke and I beat him down too fast is why he didn't port, but sounds like it is a real bug and probably needs to be reported with a /bug command.

    Hail Defan
    # May 01 2012 at 11:19 AM Rating: Decent
In my experience doing this quest you need to hail Defan- - if you dont and try to give him the Crest - Defan agroes you and doesnt accept Crest. If you go on and finish killing him then go back to try to hail and give him the crest he says he has no need of it, you need to start fresh.

Mantle of the Exorcist as a reward option.

Just some observations. Bring at least 2 stacks of torches. More if your dps is low. I merc boxed it with druid, rogue, cleric merc and tank merc.

Make sure that all who are doing the quest turns in the crest to Defan before he is engaged otherwise whomever doesn't will not get the update for the turn in.

I put rogue and tank merc on devan and kept the torches lit with druid. At 50% he does port and drop aggro.

Move to the top floor and position rogue and engage. Hand in 4 torches at a time to the fire pot and be ready to do so again and again

    Defan does flurry and rampage.

    repeatability

It looks like you can repeat the series of quests. Completed all 3, then talked to the exorcist again, and got the first quest again.

The lighting of the torches did not stop the bats in my case. Glitch maybe? This is a very difficult task and as a 39 necro - maybe impossible? He stuns, hits hard, fears, and mezzes. The bat adds make it ridiculous. I counted almost 20 before I went down and he was still add 90% resisting all my necro DoT's. Not fun. With no reward - this is going to be a task I erase.

what happens if you don't defeat him? Can you try again?
I had to bail, but when I came back, couldn't get him to fight again. Since I already gave him the token. I killed the 3 minors again to get a new token, but that didn't work either.

If you fail this quest at Defan The Watch Captain then remove it from your log and rehail the quest giver. Tell him Dark Tower and he will give you the Battle Crest back that you need to give to Defan to get him to fight you again.
    fun event!

I like this event. Fun + strategic, and aimed for the low-mid level tiers.

    Spoiler-
    1. Upon initial agro, the 4 torches each spawn "an undead bat" every 20 seconds.
(note- they are NOT flagged as undead for spell-casting purposes)
    2. Handing the torches "a flickering watchtower torch" (verify item name?) will light them, and stop the spawns.
    3. If you dont kill the bat adds, they add up quickly, and will stay alive after Defan is dead.
    4. I would estimate ~12k hitpoints on the initial Defan spawn (1200pt dd nuke did about 10% dmg).
    5. At some point during the fight, he will teleport (think it was at 50% HP) to the roof-- near the signal fire, and needs to be re-engaged. (I believe he drops agro upon porting.)

Kill him and a window pops up, offering one of 5 options of loot (req33, rec40 +20-25hp/mana tier leggings).

Defans corpse yielded 2x "Burnt out Essence of Spectre Rage" (same drop as commonly found on trash skellies, outside the Tower).

Love that SoE designed low-mid tier stuff for newer folks to enjoy :)

Those rewards are horrific... 12 ac on a required 30 breastplate? From a mob that hits for 200ish, and is the end of a 3 part quest series? What the heck? Meanwhile, the composite field chestguard (https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=51989) which is a random drop from relatively low level mobs in CR is almost equivalent in stats.

Yet another expansion where the itemization is way out of wack with the challenge.

    Quote:

Group tasks should give significantly better loot than what you can obtain solo at the same level. The person you replied to was correct, the risk versus reward on this task is quite poor.

And fun or not, EQ history has proven that people won't do things simply because they are "fun." If the rewards don't justify the risk, people will do something else.

    Quote:

The original poster made no such ridiculous claim to what they thought the reward for this task should be. The reward should simply be in line with the difficulty of the tasks and it should be clearly better than other easily obtainable items at that level.

The stats on the visible armor slot rewards for this task should, at the very least, be between those of the equivalent Blightfire quest armor and the Goru'Kar Mesa armor. They should also have similar modifiers in terms of hp/mana regeneration and focus effects (though obviously they can't be the exact same focus effects, since these rewards are not class-specific) to those on the Blightfire quest armors.
    The signal fire

the event for him is fun although a bit hard for lower levels

when you attack him on the top level the signal fire works the same as the torches down stairs in his room, but you have to give it a lot more torches then just one, just one makes it last about 5 seconds. no bats or rats should spawn with the signal fire lit

After failing with this part of the quest, using my 35 Bst and 36 Enchantress, I was interested to see your comments about suitable levels for facing this boss. I play two alts, obviously, but realised that I had never tried this just from my own resources. The last time was several years ago and I was in a full group. No wonder I failed! I shall try again but not until I have gained a few levels. One thing that did puzzle me was how to hand both tokens to the boss from my two alts without having him start attacking before both were ready.

I believe it doesn't matter who turns it in as long as both are in the same group.
