This task is the first in a series of three. It begins with Shaytherrin the Exorcist in Blightfire Moors (located in the caravans near Roanoak at the northern edge of the camp: +31 +615).

You say, 'Hail, Shaytherrin the Exorcist'

Shaytherrin the Exorcist says 'I am Shaytherrin the Exorcist, sent from the Crescent Reach Paladin's guild. Tell me. Have you come to begin the assault on the [Dark Tower]?'

    You say, 'What Dark Tower?'

Shaytherrin the Exorcist says 'Excellent. It looms far to the northwest. Here's the plan of attack.'

You have been assigned the task 'The Dark Tower: Flickering Torches'.

Collect 10 Flickering Torches 0/10 (Blightfire Moors)

Go to the Dark Tower in the northwestern part of Blightfire and kill skeletons until you loot 10 Flickering Torches.

Speak with Shaytherrin 0/1 (Blightfire Moors)

You say, 'Hail, Shaytherrin the Exorcist'

Shaytherrin says, 'Well done. Hold onto those torches. You will need them later when you venture into the [Dark Tower].'

Your faction standing with Circle of the Crystalwing got better.
    You gain experience!!

This completes the task and leads to the second task in the series.

Shaytherrin says, 'There is a tower deep in the northwestern region of this moor. It holds the undead remnants of an ancient ogre legion, one that was stationed here centuries ago when Rallos Zek sought to seize control of the Norrathian Pantheon through war. Rallos called upon the ogres of these moors, but their captain refused to leave his beloved watchtower. Rallos grew furious and cursed the rebellious legion, binding them in undeath to their dark watchtower for all eternity.'

'At night, the cursed ogre shades still wander the roads of these moors, carrying their signal torches on high. I'm sending you to purge Blightfire of this lingering evil.'

'Before you venture into the dark tower, you will need plenty of light to keep the evil at bay. Seek out the ogre skeletons. They keep to the blasted lands around the tower. Gather 10 of their signal torches and return to me when you are successful.'

Where is the npc located to get the quest?
    melee worked for me

One day I killed a couple dozen of the undead without getting a single torch drop. The next day every single one I killed dropped a torch.

Only two things changed between my two hunting sessions...

    1) I was level 30 the first day...level 31/32 the second day

    and

    2) At the end of the first day's session, I'd collected all of the ogre relics I needed for the pieces of the past quest so I turned it in before I began hunting the undead the second day.

I had read the other comments here before trying the second day to collect the torches, so the first undead I killed that day (not solo, I had a necro hunting partner) the necro dismissed their pet and unloaded on the mob while I maintained agro by taunt/stun/undead nukes (I'm a pally). After we got a torch on the first drop, we decided to test and see what would happen if we used melee as well. The necro pulled out her pet and I used autoattack/bash/undead proc in addition to what we did on the first one. Same result: we got a torch on that and every other one we killed.

Based on comments by others listed here, I don't think our leveling made the difference. But rather, finishing up the other quest is what did it for us.

While we had "Pieces of the Past" listed incomplete in our quest log, we didn't get any torch drops. Once we completed collecting ogre relics, and turned the quest in, we started getting the torch drops for this quest. At this point we got a drop off every mob.

Perhaps a bug fix went in or something but we didn't experience what the other posters here did...melee/ds/stuns/slows/dots/nukes/everything worked on these mobs and didn't impact the drop rate at all.

Oh, and heads up...Alla shows this as a level 40 quest, but it can be done duo at level 30ish with TSS gear (both the necro I hunt with and myself were wearing the level 20 quest gear set out of crescent reach, and various quest rewards from CR and Blightfire...no twinks). I'm not certain how a twink would fare, but I'd venture a guess that it wouldn't be much better. These mobs nuke (for 249), hit hard, debuff, root, stun, are interesting pulls without using lull or FD pulling, and if you're especially unlucky will bring the shadow witch (named mob) to join your party. They are all yellow/red at 32, the shadow witch is yellow at 32 but is tougher than a normal yellow con (PS - she summons).

    Happy hunting,

Sephe - 32 Paladin of Xev (or whatever server they merged it with :) )

I just verified with my 40 DRK RNG: A flickering Torch drops with every Accursed Lookout if you use no melee. DD, DOTs, arrows, DS dmg and Breath are all ok--as long as you use no melee. 10 mobs killed = 10 torches dropped. Case closed.

this is no longer true, apparently...my 41 warrior just melee'd (what else would a warrior do?) one of these completely, and got both torch and relic drop
    melee doesn't work

Yes, with my 69 ranger, spent 2 hrs killing without a drop of the Flickering Torch. I finally came here to read:(Does it help if you do not melee the skeletons (only nuke)....?) Rooted and dotted with insects and started getting them to drop.
Using fire based nukes had less of them drop but still did. Also, didn't seem to drop if the skelly hit me even when I didn't hit it.
