So I am killing walrus and Man o'wars in the SW corner of EW for faction. I don't know if it was a glitch or not but I had a Man o'war come from behind and start hitting me for 200-400dam a hit. Max hit me for 464. Conned Dark Blue to a 64 Druid. Seemed to have 25-30k hp. Figured i'd post here and let people know. Again I have no idea if this was a glitch or something that happens once in awhile...
Nokkx Lovebunny Druid of 64 seasons
*edit* Just ran into a second Dblue one a few minutes later
Just picked up a "Words of Bidding" today. I was soloing the Ulthork MOH's and Walrus' over by Korrigain and had one drop the words plus a Velium Rapier.
Since I'm a 36 Necro I figure this made up for the other one who got away by running straight into Keal Drakkel!
With a little bit of patience, and careful strategy to avoid any adds, it is possible to start in on these guys at level 34. My Wisdom is only 146, with that 146 and the addition of Mana efficiency II ring, and Burning Affliction II boots... I med kite these guys one on one while continually reapplying drones, immolate, and creeping crud. In the end I am OOM, but the MOW is dead, and 4/5 a blue is always nice.
OK, From my 2 day experience trying to camp here looking for tusks to turn into the NPC chief in Cobalt Scar for the quest and possible blue diamonds.....The Man o War are not that hard to spawn. What I have done with my druid is quad kite four of the walruses and then do four more walruses. Once my mana returns to 100%, usually 2 to 4 Man o War pop and I can start on those. In killing 10, I have received (4) meats, (2) tusks, and various other junk.
IE. There's about a 20% chance that you will get a tusk out of this. 40% of meat
Just a note to update the information here for those needing Ulthork Tusks for 7th shawl quest:
GO to SW corner of EW zone. Walruses are PH for the Ulthork MOW. The earlier post about large vs. small walruses may be true - I don't know since I just pulled every walrus I saw and quaded them. Ulthork will pop one to four at a time in my experience. You can quad them with more walruses if you like, the snared run speed is the same as the walruses.
The Ulthork Tusks drop rate is unfortunately low. I think I saw everything on the loot table except one or two of the ulthork hide armor items before any tusks dropped. Maybe just unlucky - your mileage may vary.
BTW, for those doing this camp for exp, the Ulthork MOW have about 3650 hp and the walruses have about 2200 hp. As noted above, the walruses and ulthork snared run speed is the same. It's a great camp for druids and other kiters - just pull what you want and run around the open spaces, or if you are worried about adds, pull to the water edge and kite along the zone edge.
Killed these to get from 39 to 40, in between the occational kill of a giant, or the snow griffs so I could get eggs to do the third shawl quest (which I finally finished). Tusk drops are rare, and I haven't seen a spell yet. I really want RFS, but haven't gotten the chance for it yet, be it via a raid on the Ry'Gorr or off a M-o-W.
It usually takes me three Ensnaring Roots, three Drones of Doom, and three Immolates to take it down, and occationally a Firestrike to finish it off. I'm going to be trying to figure if I can quad them, or at least duo them, soon enough.
Since it's hard to get a group together to kill the Ry'gorr Legionnaire lately in EW, I went after Man O Wars instead. Each one took me most of my mana (at 39), and four of them got me half a gold bubble of XP. They dropped about 5 plat each, plus random stuff. On the bright side, once my CoV faction is up above 'kill you now puny creature', I now have 4 tusks I can turn in for gems.
Tried quadding these two nights ago when I dinged 44. 225 Wisdom and tanglewood shield, so no mana burned on ensnare. No KEI/clarity. Lightning AoE down to 25% health. Saved my last 15% mana for beguile animal and let a walrus nip on their heals after nukes.
Almost worked lol. Two MOW's down, walrus broke charm, stun and I was done. Dropped Ro's spell on one though.
My advice: don't quad unless you have high Wisdom and KEI running. Even then, they have HUGE hit-points.
Another tactic that worked well: Ensnare one, hit it with your best DOT and let it drop about 10% in health. While running around, charm a walrus and sic. You'll keep aggro running in a small circle while your pet nips its heals. The MOWs never turned on the walrus' until they were down to about 30% health. By that time the walrus usually won the fight. Afterwards, sit pet, let charm break (hide if you are a druid) kill pet. Rinse and repeat.
Spell: Tumultuous Strength (39 shaman spell) dropped from a MoW on OCtober 28, 2002. Anyone else get some unlisted spell drops? I have a 26 necro in the makings of having to find spells
As a 39 almost 40 druid I've recently been working with a DoT that some druids are familiar with... Charm animal; to do this well charm the walrus nearby, snair your target, sick pet, tag it with imulate (hopefully it will ago you not the pet) In wolf form you can easily keep distance, though you wanna stay close enough to keep the agro on you... with scouts and drek wolves can take a giant with 1 wolf. To make things easier in the end, root your victem when he go's into flight (usually) it will kill your pet befor dieing, and if not cancel magic pet, snair and get another pet or dot it.
I went from level 35 to level 37 doing nothing but killing these guys and the walruses that spawn in that area and I've never seen a man-o-war - tons of hunters and warriors, but never one of these guys - this is as of two weeks ago.
Do they spawn in the same area as the others by the giant prison, or somewhere else?
The manowars are actually near the Kael zone. If you come out of Kael head straight and go at an angle to the right some. You will see a hut there usually with a walrus or 2 near it (ph's). That is the area they spawn.
There are two different size walrusses. some like level 30 some like 37 or so, the bigger ones are the PH's. Ignore the little ones. I killd all the big walrusses with a partner, we had 6 spawn within an hour, and 3 mor after we killed the six. Then we killed all the BIG walrusses again, 3 more popped in no time.
These suckers are pretty decent if you know what your doing. Mages this is an excellent place to practice chain casting your pets. Yes it can take forever for some to spawn and sometimes they show up in bundles. No way these things have 3k hps cause all i did at lvl 44 was dot them once and with pet ds on they would beat themselves to death. Just when pets knocking at deaths door start casting and /pet get lost just before casting is done. Dead man o war exp to you and hopefully tusks. Got many tusks and got one bd and bunch of necklaces and stuff like that. Great exp easy to kill but can be pain waiting for them
I have had as many as six man o wars at one time down there. And I can't remember a time that there has not been at least one there. With 3 being the most likely.
I am level 45 wiz and have J boots and flux staff. With a KEI I pull everything down here. Highest count I have had in total was 19 thats walrus and MOW combined.
I just run out of range run a lot more and then hit with COF. Run well out of range and do it again. The KEI lets me med up pretty quick in the time it takes for them to get back in range.
I kite the group all the way up to the coldain camp on the north beach turn around there and then kite them all the way back down to their own beach again where i once again have to turn around and head back towards the bridge. By the time I get to see the mammies again they are usually all dead.
Great fun and well worth the xp. Just don't try this if your getting any lag. I did and even with diamond skin this gang wiped me out in less than 2 seconds.
You had cruddy luck. For me, two quads of walruses is usually enough to start the MOWs popping and they stay pretty regular after that, usually having from one to three up at any given time.
If things start to dry up, do another walrus quad. And whack any snow bunny that you see in the walrus fields, also.
I think the loot table may have changed for these. I've killed about 30 in the last couple of days and not a single one dropped a spell, although I looted 4 spells in a couple of hours 2 weeks ago.
They seem to be dropping a lot more research items now.
Killing walruses in the SW of the zone definitely causes them to spawn, as do snow bunnies in the same area. As a druid with track it is easy to see what the new spawns are in a particular place and some time (maybe 10 minutes?) after killing something in that area, up pops a new walrus, snow bunny or Ulthork.
BTW the huts with Icefang and Korrigain is a perfect place to pull to. I have been there for many hours and nothing has ever wandered through (unless trained by someone :P).
An update to the comment about spell drops. After killing another load of these (maybe 50), I finally had another spell drop...and it was Ro's Fiery Sundering, just what I was looking for :). So they still drop spells, but very rarely.
the us>i rule does not always apply, if the word is short enough. viruses is the plural of virus, not viri or virii. theres your daily english lesson 8)
Has nothing to do with length of word. Has everything to do with word origin. Latin words of 2d declension end in us. They're plurals end in i. This is why radius has a plural of radii. Other words, like circus, aren't in the same declension and therefore get the english es. This is your latin lesson (and english lesson) for the day...
