Quest completed
# Jul 02 2006 at 5:18 PM Rating: Decent
Completed this quest last night on the new Combine server. It is obvious to me that in order to make the Orc Lumberjacks spawn you need to be killing as much as you can in zone. On my old server where I was the only one in zone, the Orc Lumberjacks were VERY rare, but on the new Combine server where there were anywhere from 120-190 halflings running around killing things, an Orc Lumberjack was spawning roughly every 12min or so, sometimes 2 at the same time. Still took me about 4 hours to collect the 2 axes and machettes, due to competeing to get to the mobs first! And also, sadly seeing the Orc Lumberjacks being taken to the guards because they were kicking some little halflings butt!

Oh and with regards to my last post, the Orc Lumberjacks don't 'spawn' at the orc camp, they roam around the west side of the wall.

I HIGHLY recommend this quest, the faction is awesome, xp is awesome and the item is UNREAL particularly for a new server. If it wasn't a lore item, I would DEFINTELY do the quest again!
Quest broken?

Camped the orcs in Misty Thicket last night for about 2 hours, didn't see any of the drop items for the quest, just LOTS of rusty weapons. Will head back there tonight irrespective of the quest because it's great xp for around level 12 and works wonders for faction.
If anyone has any info on the drop rate of the quest items your post would be greatly appreciated.

supposed to sharpen it then take it back into rivervale "Sharpen in a forge with a sharpening stone (found at many smithing merchants). Give the sharpened sword and ruined drakeling scale to Bodbin" as per quest info. get a ok starter wep.

From last night's (pretty darn good) patch:

Storm Reaper Thorn Machete - This newbie Halfling quest weapon is now flagged as magical.

It SHOULD be flagged SOMEthing considering how crappy it is.....4 DMG? OY! Gloomingdeep weapons are higher than that and easier to get early on....EQ needs to upgrade all the newbie quest weapons but that takes effort and work........
They need to change the ratio

The ratio on the wood elf/half elf (Tunare) ranger sword is 6/27 but has no stats, the human/half elf (Karana) ranger sword is also 6/27 but has +1 STR and +2 AGI. This thing is about as useful as a tarnished.

While completing the lowbie ranger armor quest in MT/RV area, I went ahead and got this.

This is truly lame. A rusty long sword (https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=175) is 5/35, while a tarnished long sword (https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=183) is 5/33 for the price of a sharpening stone.

A Halfling Ranger can port up to the Bazaar and buy a Blackened Alloy Longsword (10/29; https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=6042) for less than 40 pp these days.

This weapon isnt even MAGIC!

Come on Verant!
our weapons the worst

the halfling rogues got a damage:6 dly:21 weapon which looks cool i think all the other halfling newbie weapons are better then ours even the casters!
Bad Bad Bad

On the Terris-Thule server, you can buy a giant militia longsword from one of the merchants, I forget which, for 6pp. Don't know how many are left there, or if somehow it's a regular product, but it kicks the crackers out of this weapon. It's 11/39, and MAGIC. I can't believe they put such an awful weapon out. I mean, risk vs. reward, Verant! Buy something unless you want to have this to show your status, like the Falchion for pallies.
RE: A Lil Secret
# Jan 30 2003 at 4:21 PM Rating: Decent
That sword is vendor loot dropped by giants in Kael Drakkel. Another such sword dropped by them is the Berserker's Sword (6/22). If you found one on a merchant, a player had sold it to the merchant.
Almost insulting
# Jun 30 2002 at 1:32 AM Rating: Good
This is a terrible reward for the difficulty. I'm pretty certain that a Tarnished Short Sword, at Dmg 4, Dly 26. +5.00 Wt _is_ better than this.

The stats are negligible when you have a weapon this terrible, and the fact that it's not MAGIC is the final strike against it.

Halfling Warriors get an insanely good weapon for the level and difficulty of the quest: Dmg 7, Dly 25, +10 Stamina, the ratio of which alone is better than that of any Fine Steel weapon. That Rangers are left with this thing is something of an insult.

Edit: Also, the Orc Lumberjack Machetes you get as part of this quest are 4/29 by themselves. I think I spent 4 levels searching for a second hatchet...

This sucks?
# May 23 2002 at 4:32 PM Rating: Decent
the reason the sword sucks in my opinion is that nowadays the twink stuff even really low end twink stuff is soo readily available that better weapons are available earlier on in game.. Sony/Verant are still making additions to the game based on the fact that a person should start out at the begining and make his way to the top without help from higher lvl charas giving u stuff and what-not.. now don't get me wrong i don't have a prob with getting help or even twinking if you already have one or two higher lvl charas.. but i'm just pointing out that maybe Verant should get with the times.... i mean how many people had magical weapons during beta testing when they were lvl 12 or so?

At least Verant could make it magic.
I can't see any reason why they would not want to in terms of game balence. I was given a FS short sword 4/23 in exchange for a stack of Bat wings on the FV server and I use it instead of this.

I can think of only two valid reasons why this is not magic.
1) It is an intermediate weapon, and no one has found the quest or the quest is broken.
2) The item desiger made a mistake and left off the magic tag for this item. (I vote for this one)

Any other reason they may have for not making it magic would be well...... I just can't believe they would have any other reason.

Sorry for the tirade.

I was pretty excited to get this item for my little ranger and had used up valuble EQ time getting it. (What with the Wife and kids and the Guild on the other sever :) )I did get the complete set of Ranger armor though. I really like it.
Except someone called me a Twink when I was standing at the Spires waiting to get up to luclin for ny new snare spell. (The armor looks pretty good and the Machette looks like a Centi Short sword) LOL how Ironic. The only new Char I have started in the last year and a half that was not twinked to the gills. ;)

RE: Damage Bonus

the damage bonus is a function of your level. when your get to level 28, you get a damage bonus in your main hand. the formula is (level -25)/3. round fractions down.
The guy who took this screenshot is between level 58 and 60. Your damage bonus will be different based on your current level. it has absolutly nothing to do with the weapon itself.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 13 2002 at 5:59 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) EEH wrong. this is a different damage bonus the one hes talking about is real but never shows up on a weapon. a dmg bonus is added to your minimum dmg so you will hit for atleast 11 with this every time you dont miss.
RE: Damage Bonus
# Aug 26 2002 at 5:56 AM Rating: Decent
Not sure what you're talking about there; i have a rogue that has 5 damage bonus on her pokers and to get a 1 damage hit do happen...
the damage bonus he's talking about is real, does show up on weapons and it is added to your hit.
it works as: base damage=hit+damage bonus=total damage. not base damage+bonus=total damage
(10 base=20 hit+11 bonus, not 10 base+11bonus=42 hit)

Above poster is correct. You do NOT get a damage bonus until level 28 or higher. My wood elf ranger was not receiving any bonus until he hit 28 and then he only got a +1 (28-25=3/3=1).

And to figure your damage it goes like this:

Damage*2+1+Bonus Damage+Bane damage(when applicable)+ Proc/effect damage(when applicable)= Max damage you can do in a single hit. Classes capable of scoring critical hits or crippling blows also score additional damage for landing one of those. Rogue get additional damage if the weapon is being used for a backstab attack, and I think players with exceptionally high STR can do additional damage. That pretty much has been my experience when figuring weapon damage.
Your mileage may vary.

ranger's weapon compare to the other class weapon's in river
# Apr 16 2002 at 10:30 PM Rating: Decent
here is what i gather

warrior weapon 7/25 +10 sta
cleric weapon 8/29 +5 sta
thief weapon 6/21 +1 str
druid weapon 5/30 +2 wis
paladin weapon 5/30 +1 str +1 sta
ranger weapon 4/27 +1 str +1 dex

as you can see the ranger got the wearts weapon of all.. 4 damg is a bit to low.. Verant should look at this issue now
No magic?
# Apr 16 2002 at 11:43 AM Rating: Decent
The thing that I notice about this weapon is that it isn't magic. The cleic quest weapon at this level is magic and I'm not sure about the other classes but I think I remember seeing that they were magic too.

The damage/delay isn't as good as the other classes either but by the time you are 8-10 and can quest to get this you are approching the leel that you can fight wisps. Since you need a magic weapon to hit a wisp your time would be better served trying to get a magic weapon or coming up with some cash to buy a magic weapon.

This not being magic IMHO is it's biggest downfall.
not too good
# Apr 15 2002 at 8:55 PM Rating: Decent
You know the worst part about this weapon, the paladin weapon and even the warrior weapon is the cleric weapon/armor is very very nice for the lvl. The cleric mace is 8/29 unless that's a misprint.
RE: not too good
# Apr 16 2002 at 10:55 AM Rating: Default
What's wrong with the warrior weapon, as compared to the cleric? I think that a 7/25 +10 stamina weapon at level 8 (I finished mine at 12, just shout looking for pages and people will tell you when they drop) is better than an 8/29. For the most part though, the weapons are generally bad
I'd rather use my tarnished short sword
# Apr 15 2002 at 7:42 PM Rating: Decent
I use a tarnished short sword on my noob halfling ranger, its 4/26. Thats 1 less delay than this item, but with out the 1 str and dex. I dont plan on sticking around MT for the time involved getting this sword, and if i did i will probably have better than my tarnished short sword (and this weapon) by the time it was complete.
This item would be a lot better if it could be obtained by turning in things like rat pelts, and bixie wings, as that seems a more appropriate level to obtain it.

One could hope....

.... that this could be built upon kind of like the iskar SK kukris (sp?)
It would be nice to have an improving weapon like that.

not great stats...

Not a great weapon, compared to what rogues and warriors receive (was angry when I realized that I used a ruined drakeling scale to get it, but then went and looted another one right away). It does look nice, and completes the set -- will keep it for social events when my life is not on the line.
