At the end of the previous quest, Rexx Frostweaver told you to speak to his wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl.

You say, 'Hail, Betti Frostweaver'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Well, hello there, dear, it sure gets cold here, doesn't it? Perhaps I can interest you in a sewing pattern to pass the time and keep you warm.'

You say, 'I am here regarding the embroidered shawl.'

You receive an Embroided Shawl Pattern.

Betti Frostweaver says 'It will be an honor to assist you in fashioning an embroidered shawl. It is a very demanding product and I can see from the look in your eyes that you desire to burn your sewing kit in our furnace, but if you persevere, your efforts will be richly rewarded. When you are ready you must carefully weave a spool of sacred Coldain thread. Take the thread, this pattern, and the silk shawl and carefully embroider the pattern. The result will be most exquisite. Please show me if you manage to create one.'

You say, 'What sacred Coldain thread?'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Take a woven frost giant beard, two siren's hairs, two manticore manes and two Drakkel dire wolf whiskers, and combine them in a sewing kit. The resulting thread will enhance your shawl's power when embroidered in a special pattern.'

The Woven Frost Giant Beard is an uncommon drop from various frost giants across Velious. It is droppable, so you may find it on vendors in Thurgadin.

The NO DROP Siren Hair drops from sirens in Cobalt Scar and Siren's Grotto. This should not be confused with Lock of Siren Hair, which is used for a different quest.

The Manticore Manes are a common drop from A Manticore in Eastern Wastes. These are also droppable and may be found on Thurgadin vendors.

The NO DROP Drakkel Wolf Whiskers drop from A Drakkel Dire Wolf in the Great Divide. They're often left to rot by players killing for faction, so a quick zonewide /shout may net you one or more rather quickly.

Once you have all the components, combine 1 Woven Frost Giant Beard, 2 Siren Hairs, 2 Manticore Manes, and 2 Drakkel Wolf Whiskers in a sewing kit to craft a Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread (trivial 148). Combine the thread with the Embroidered Shawl Pattern and Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit to craft an Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl (trivial 208). If you fail the final combine, you get the shawl back. If necessary, follow the initial dialogue to get another pattern.

Give Betti the Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl.

Betti Frostweaver says 'Spectacular artistry! I doubt I could have done better myself. You'll have to forgive me, I know time is short and I tend to carry on. This is the pattern for the making of a rune sacred to our people. It will be our final test of your craftsmanship and will put many of your skills to the test, but I trust you'll find the finished product to be more than worth the effort. Show Gilthan the silk shawl, he will set you on the path. May Brell always be with you outlander.'

I just completed the Embroidered Shawl today and yes the third time IS the charm. My first two attempts were successful with the thread (trivial 161 skill) and horrible failures on the shawl (not trivial 161 skill). Succeeded on the third attempt with 161 skill, 207 wis, 90 int, 142 dex.
Still not sure if Dex truly plays a role in tailoring, but due to the difficulty of this quest I would highly recommend getting a Boon from an enchie at the same time you are begging for that brilliance buff.
Sirens were definitely the most difficult part of the shawl, but I found it became possible to solo them easily by pulling them up the hillside from next to the ramp at the SS zone. Enticers dropped the most hairs, which is convenient as they are the weakest ones. It's a good idea to get 4 or six hairs before heading off to combine your items, as you should expect a few failures and you'll already have the hardest items handy to try again. I had enough pieces on me for three attempts, except the beard of course, which I managed to purchase from Vendors in Thurgadin as most people just sell em. I wish everyone one working on this shawl the best of luck and I'll be crossing my fingers for ya!

I'm a 56th lvl druid with Epic. Killing the sirens is EASY for me. All I do is hit them with epic, dot them w/Winged Death and drones off my bracer. Two options from here:
Either root and stay back or let them walk at you since when you root them they tend to chain-cast their DD spell.

Soon as Winged Death wears off 1-2 scoriae's depending on the siren kills them flat out. I've looted 4 hairs and 5 excellent scales so far.

As for the thread: I failed first combine at a 151 skill and failed again at 154. Thankfully I've got friends helping me gather silks to get my skill up. Who wants a wu robe?

The thread is trival at 158 skill in tailoring.

The final combine to make the shawl is not trival at 158.

there are 3 or 4 sirens near sg that dropped many hairs for us. about 1 in 10 gave exp at lvl 52. the best way to get these guys iin my opinion is with a group of casters. we had 2 clerics chain stunning and me (a druid) doing the main damage. these guys seem to have a fast spawn but if you kill them fast enough after about 20 of them you end up with a lull for several minutes. even better way to do this is get a bunch of bored guildies and take a few hours *breaking the spawn* as we called it. it was great fun and a change from all the hassle of trying to level

At 56 I can solo these as a paladin without much trouble. With a support group, you can easily control the respawn. The key is to have all your stuns loaded... the sirens have I would guess under 1500 hitpoints... probably closer to 1000.

Even though I only got xp off of one in 10, this was such a fun camp. I loved getting to beat the mess out of the others in our group when someone got charmed :)

False, the siren enticers (The lowest of all three sirens) have at least 2000 hps. Once Ice Comet takes them down to just about half and a second one finishes them off. Ice Comet does 1120 dmg.

as a lvl 57 druid without epic, I put on MR gear and put on hp/AC/MR/regen buffs. MR at 177, I pull with drifting death, then snare, then blast away. They are easy and even with the long med times I keep up with the spawn np.

The Siren Enchantress's are nasty. they cast lvl 44 enchanter spells, so I assume they are around lvl 44 to 47 or so. If they gate, I gate. When those nasties gate the gain alot of hp, and they come back with fury. I use 2 dd spells, with different ammounts of dmg. they only gate when very close to death, so use a bigger dd to just finish them off instead of getting them in gate range.

The Thread was trivial at 156. I had not seen a skill increase in 30 try's of Wu's so I tried the 6th Shawl at 156 it was not trivial and I got a skill increase to 157. I hope This Helps

Is the thread you make after combining the materials lore/no drop? Or just No drop.

RE: Question, again.
# Oct 01 2002 at 12:17 PM Rating: Decent
thread is lore no drop

but patterns arent lore so can get several patterns

then collect other supplies and save sirens till last

this helps by allowin u gather supplies for several attempts before hunting sirens (since they bit out of the way)

fyi made my shawl with skill 131(had 1 skill up on thread attempts)

2 failures on thread 1 failure on shawl combine

I successfully made the thread and 6th Shawl with a skill of 143. Both were NOT trivial. I failed the 5th with a skill of 131 when I shouldn't have, so I guess I deserved to get lucky.

no success for me. was able to make the thread, but failed on the shawl with a skill of 145. gonna take me forever to get 2 more hairs...

Siren hair
# Oct 02 2001 at 3:47 AM Rating: Default
Siren hair from SG most definitely does not work. :/ It is called "loch of siren hair," is droppable, and stackable. After my dismay at my SG siren hairs not working, I went to farm sirens in CS (which btw is surprisingly easy for me, a 60 chanter, with the mez/nuke method and some MR gear). The hair you get from them is simply called "Siren hair," and is no drop and not stackable.

I successfully made the thread with skill 156, and it was trivial. I failed on the shawl though, and am going back to farming. :/

Well i had the 5th shawl for about 3 months now. The guild i was in never had anyone capable to assist me in obtaining the siren hairs. Well i joined a new guild and we got a group to hunt the sirens.
The next day i logged on and got 2 manicore mains off the first manicores i killed at 52 for a shaman they are preaty eazy to solo and give exp.
I sat there in eastern waste and buffed, all buffs str, dex, agi, sta, cha, speed, and my shurnken gobbie earring. So i got out my deluxe tailoring kit, lined everything up, guild wished me luck and i pressed combine. Success at a tailoring skill of 125, so next i take my shawl waited about 5 minutes. I hit combine and yet another success, i have an embroidered prayer shawl!.
Wisdom was 184, intel is 100, dex 160, str 166, sta 129, cha 120, agi 160. note i had not had any failures making wu's armor out of 60 attempts, and only a 5 point increase in skill.

I hunted sirens with a 60 pally for several hours. We killed about 30 Sirens before we saw our first hair. After that we got 3 more in the next 20 sirens. He had 130mr and I had 85 and we were both getting charmed on occasion. They are not too bad if your main tank has good MR and you can keep them stunned. Hope this helps.

Im just curious
Does INT help success rate or does WIS do that?
RE: Success
# Oct 15 2001 at 8:34 PM Rating: Decent
INT helps increase the rate you increase skill when practicing or sumtin.

WIS helps increase the rate you actually make the item.
RE: Success
# Oct 21 2001 at 8:50 AM Rating: Decent
this is no longer true. Verant changed which stat, wis or intel, is checked for skills almost 2 years ago.

druids, shaman, paladins, rangers, clerics were complainin, and rightly so, thats it was so much harder for them to advance. Verant listened, and made a positive change.

if you are a wisdom class, then pump that ups. if you are a intel class, then boost that one.
well...

153 tailoring, 226 INT, 113 wis, 86 dex... made thread 1st try it was trivial. Made shawl 1st try, gained a point to 154. I don't think dex has any bearing on success... my dex has been super low for all attempts and I have not failed any final or interim combines yet (made 5th shawl at 100 skill).
Just my 2 cents.....
# Sep 10 2001 at 12:47 PM Rating: Excellent
Here's my 2 cents on the whole thing (and maybe a little more), throughout making this whole this and working on our trade skills my roomate (a 55 Druid and myself a 51 Druid) and I had heard that you have a better sucess rate if your DEX is up, now he and I got to thinking about this and reflected back to when we were getting our Fletching kills up and he noticed that I hardly failed and that he failed often, at first we thought it was cause my WIS was 210 and his was just 200 but then he got and insight which brought him to a 217 or so and still he had the same failure rate (but his skill did start going up better) we looked at each others DEX and notice that his was a 78 and mine was a 99 (him being a woodelf and I being a halfling).
So last night I was with a friend who had a tailoring skill of 128 and she had tried 3 times and failed, my roomate said he knew a girl that had a 191 and had failed 3 times, also my friends DEX was 78, SOOOOOOO anyway I finally got everything I needed and went and found a 60 Shammy and got a dex buff before making my attempt which brought my dex to a 158, low and behold after all that I am now the proud owner of the of 6th shawl on my first attempt and it was NOT trivial with a 153 Tailoring skill (if fact it brought me to a 154). So hopefully this helps anyone whose trying this out. Good Luck

Before I did the 5th shawl combine, I made Wu armor until noticed a pattern of success and failure.

It wasnt long before I noticed a pattern of success, success, failure, failure, success. So i made Wu to the first success in the my observed pattern, asked a sham and a enc for the appropriate buffs, and succeded making the 5th shawl with tailoring at skill 119, int 188 dex 130.

So as of now I am not goin to skill up on Wu again until I have all the elements for the 6th shawl so I can try this observed pattern technique again. Will make a follow up post with the results.

#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 09 2001 at 4:49 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Why do these quests require high trade skills? To make you waste time online doing nothing. I dont have a problem with complicated quests but to require trade skills (which by the way are useless. I make more money from hunting and farming.) in order to do these quests is just plain ridiculous. In order to complete this quest I would have to spend a couple of weeks getting my baking, pottery, tailoring and maybe smithing skills into the 130's. I have better things to do wiht my time.

SG vs CS?

Has anyone tried using the hairs dropped in SG instead of just those from CS? Maybe someone said it, but if so I missed it. The hairs are droppable, and some friends have quite a collection going now from time spent in SG. Anyone have some insight?

Anyone after the patches this week got any of the dire wolf whiskers form the wolves in GD? I just killed about 50 of them and not one dropped. Anyone know if they are ultra rare drops now, or do they drop anymore of the ones in GD?
