We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

Can anyone tell me if the parts to this wep are no drop? If they are droppable that makes it a lot easier for my n00b pally to get this

Only thing not no drop is the bag. Found it out recently. But the bag is the easy part

Okay, I've done all parts of this quest, except for the nobleman's hilt. I just got finished camping six hours in Najena fighting skeleton #1listed previously, and no drop. Will go back tomorrow and hope to find the hilt. By the way, if you are on a PvP server like me, Najena is darkie territory, so beware. I spent ALL of my doentime fighting off darkies to keep rights to the zone. All other parts of the quest worked fine, and all NPC's were at correct loc's. Good Luck

Skelly #1 is either bugged or no longer drops the Hilt of the Nobleman. After camping him for 4 hours a day, 7 days straight with no drop I moved on to skelly #2 and got the hilt on the 2nd pull. It may have been coincidental, however I did kill skelly #1 well over 100 times with no luck; I would say he doesn't drop it any more.

For those who don't know where skelly #2 is, here goes. Go through the tentacle terror room and pass through the gate marked Najena. Here the path turns briefly south, then east, then north, then east again into a wider corridor. Normally there will be 2 or 3 elementals and a magician in here. Pass through this room and it narrows into a corridor again. Almost immediately there will be a corridor to the north... take it. You will be in an oval shaped room with a small stairwell along the right hand wall. Usually you will see an ogre guard standing at the top of the stairwell. Skelly #2 spawns on the opposite side of the room on the same 10 minute cycle as #1. Once you enter the room you should see skelly #2 charging up the stairs at you. If your luck is the same as mine, kill him a few times and you'll have the hilt.

As of 05,24,02 I have the bag exactly as the above mentioned. The guide I was using was one located in everlore.com but this one does just as well. Some of the text is weird, having to ask Who instead of What, and sometimes asking the quoted items directly, but the thing works just fine as I am sitting there holding the bag right now. The two hardest parts of this was A) Going to the 4 corners of the earth to hand in the notes, B) Finding Llara to hand her the locket Kanthuk gives you. If you show up to their spawn point to give something in and they are not there, it is because they despawn when you complete that part of the quest. When I had Kanthuk finished talking about everything and his grandmother, he handed me a locket and despwaned. Don't know their repop times, but if they are not there, someone beat you to a specific NPC and completed that part of the quest.

Good luck all, and as a side note, when you find Llara, if you do not say the EXACT right thing, you lose Kanthuk's locket and you have to start over again. What you hand her the locket and she asks you the question, say "Kanthuk gave it to me", and then you will not be able to get her to shut up. Apparently people have found this part to be the hardest part of the quest.

Cheers

This is broken. After waiting 3 hours (yes... 3 hours) at Kanthuk's spot and describing the problem to the GM he gave me another Note [gee thanks]. I had to log at that point and on Tuesday the same exact events occured when I gave Kanthuk the note... I have sent a message to EQ Quality Assurance (is that an oxymoron?). Once again, if you accomplish this on The Rathe please let me know. Thanks for the posts.

Same thing happened to me on 05/28. Gave note to Kanthuk and he de-spawned. Petitioned but Guide responded that GM wasn't on and would "escalate" my petition to server GM. Made out bug report. Getting a 'port to NK so I can get my note from WK and wait.

Got my Ghoulbane tonight! All NPCs were in the correct location, and DE-POP after you get through with them. (I have no idea of spawn time) Ryshon is near the NK zone at the far southern part of zone on beach. Kanthuk is the SECOND dwarf fishing north of the BB docks. Llara is standing just to the left of the entrance to Unrest. Ruathey is visible when you zone into Lavastorm from Nekulos. She is standing on the left, partially uphill. I did have to "re-target" every one of the NPCs while talking to them with the exception of Ryshon. For us non porters, the easiest way to do this quest is as follows:
1) Talk to Ryshon in West Karana
2) Go to Highpass for Amstaf's scroll
3) Go talk to Kanthuk in BB
4) Get the Blade of Nobility in BB
5) Talk to Llara in Dagnor's Cauldron
6) Get the ghoul heart in Unrest
7) Venture to Lavastorm and talk to Ruathey
8) Get the Hilt of a Nobleman in Najena

Hope this helps someone

Ghoulbane on The Rathe
# May 21 2002 at 10:47 AM Rating: Default
I would appreciate it if anyone on The Rathe who has done this quest would let me know if Kanthuk worked for them. I found him on zone line between BB and G'Fay and gave him note, one line into text he dissapears. I run back to his spawn point and wait.. no pop. Call Guide and was advised to wait till Monday for GM. Last night, after three hours of waiting, GM shows up and gives me a new scroll. Kanthuk did not spawn during entire time... anyone time him to see how often he should spawn. By the way, I am at the coordinates given, right above the dock. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

All these NPC's are where they are said to be....On innorruk the quest is working fine, Kanthek spawns on one side of the docks...<NOT the side with the ring on it...the other side...i found swimming out and around the wall worked best>

and BY KARANA Enough with the constant arguing, nbody wants to listen to people shooting people down, or insulting them because they think diffrently, if you don't like somones post...don't become some baby and call them newbs, or n00bs, or however it's spelled today...

is it sooo hard to be calm, decent and composed in a post?...

Not sure if Quest is working again, but I am gathering the parts. In my search for the Hilt in Najena I spent about 8 hrs on one skeleton and he never dropped it. I then tried the A Skeleton at the spiral stair case just past the tentacle terrors. He dropped it on the third attempt. Good luck to all.

# Apr 27 2002 at 12:33 AM Rating: Default
As of today, the quest is broken for sure on half of the servers, and probably broken on the rest - the GM I talked to wasn't sure. The problem is that Ryshon Hunsti either won't talk or simply doesn't exist - either way, there's no way to get the note from him. The GM I talked to said that until at least the next patch, the quest method of getting the Ghoulbane will not be available. The Shin Lord drop, however, still works (as far as I know).

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news =(

Blade dropped twice for me in about 3 hrs of sharing camp with a druid, once off A Goblin and once off Crazed Goblin, so I would say the 10-12 hours is REALLY max there.

As a former DE, who knows that forest very well, I would say that as soon as you enter Nektulos take a left and keep followinf the wall. The only guard that you'll have to fight/avoid is the one in front of the lavastorm entrance. Fortunately he is only the about 50% of the time.

That particular guard is also very easily killed at level 20. Not to mention thirty when I did the quest.
Real Information
# Apr 21 2002 at 8:56 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, just to make things easier for others camping the nessicary mobs, I'll tell about my experience.

Ghoul Heart: This dropps off of Crazed Ghouls in Unrest AND regular ghouls in the Karanas. However, The drop rate in Unrest is much much higher, approximately 10% of the Crazed Ghouls there drop the heart as apposed to about .5% of the ghouls in the Karanas. Plus the ghouls in Unrest are much more common. Do not mistake Ghoul Carrion for the heart, these may look the same to some blind people, but they are not, the heart is equipable as a neck peice, the carrion is not.(-10 Cha) Estimated camping time: Several Hours. (3-4 hours)

Blade of Nobility: Dropped off of a Crazed Goblin in Butcherblock Mountains. This drop seems extremely rare, dropping only about 3% of the time( i know, 68 crazed goblins died, 2 blades dropped, thats EQ Parser for ya!) As far as I know, this is the only place the blade drops, the goblin hits hard, about 50-70 on the average hit, killed with a group of mid 20's.
Estimated camping time: A long time. (10-12 hours)

Amstaf's Scroll: Drops off of a Goblin guard in Highkeep, not a crazed goblin as this site claims. The drop rate is very common, I got my scroll on the third kill, and I heard that many drop every night. Easy kill for someone in their 20s if someone can pull it for them.
Estimated Camping Time: Not long. (Less then an hour)

Nobleman's Hilt: Drops off of "A Skeleton" in Najena. Easiest spawn is as follows: Walk in Najena, Go through the path that looks like a zone, take a left, you'll find a room filled with elementals, go striaght across that room to the doorway, and take a left, go striaght and there it is, hits for about 70s and you'll need someone in low 30s to kill it or a good group of high teens 20s.

Combine in the bag and your the proud owner of a Ghoulbane.

I can't even find Ryshon to start the quest. I sat at the wk/nk zone for 2hrs along the shoreline hoping he would pop. Is there a certain time for him, or is he supposed to be there all the time? I really want to do the quest and the only reason I was over on that end of the world was to do this!
RE: The Beginning
# May 07 2002 at 5:46 PM Rating: Default
I happened upon Ryshon standing along the shore in WK not far from the NK zone his loc on Cazic Thule is -4234 by -15147. I just ran west from the spires along the water and there he was every time. I have spoken to him now 5 times getting the note to take to Kanthuk Ogrebane. The quest seems to stop when I get to the end of Kanthuk's story. After I say "what strange image" he never responds and I never get the pendant to give to Llara.
Good quest

This is the way quests should be, I'm glad they finally seem to have got it working. Nevermind how stupid the idea of having to have a paladin kill another paladin to get his holy sword is in the first place, but the shin lord camp is simply terminal. My first dungeon raid experience was as a druid helping a paladin friend try to get his Ghoulbane, and I remember thinking "God, I hope the rest of the game isn't like this."

Now I play a shadow knight on Firiona Vie, and I sort of "fell into" this quest. I knew from the start that I needed the Ghoulbane if I wanted to complete my epic, but I didn't realize at first the GB could be quested, and then I heard the quest was broken, so I didn't give it much thought... I figured I'd simply camp the froglok shin lord once I reached level 40, or that I'd buy it (on Firiona Vie, very few items are NO DROP, and the Ghoulbane can be traded.) My plan with this character was to do more dungeon raids and attempt to enjoy them more. One of my first raids this time was on Najena... on one trip, my group got 3 ghoulbane hilts, one of which went to me. I didn't think a lot of it, still figuring I wouldn't use it, but it was only taking up a little space in the bank, so I held on to it.

Fast-foward a few months, I notice somebody selling Amstaf's scroll and I think "Hmm, well, it can't hurt to pick it up"... I got the scroll for 50 platinum from someone who was desperate to get rid of it. Now I start thinking, hey, maybe I can do this quest afterall.

So I look it up... at level 39, I can solo the goblins in Butcherblock which drop the blade pretty easily, which I do. Five spawns (with a sane length of time in between them) and I get the blade. "Wow", I think to myself... "that was painless."

I dropped by Unrest to see if I could get the ghoul's heart, but all the ghouls in Unrest con green to me, which means that TLC will kick in (TLC is in effect serverwide on Firiona Vie). No big deal, I'll either buy it, or get a lower level guildmate to help me out... according to what I'm reading here, and my own experiences, I'm getting the feeling these drops are not incredibly rare, you just have to be willing to hunt in the right area for a while.

I did the footwork portion of the quest. As a shadow knight, of course, the script went a bit differently than above... instead of "I seek enlightment", I said "Yes, I seek enlightenment through the terror of my lord Cazic-Thule". ;) The Nexus spires make the footwork easily bearable... I even enjoyed it.

If I were to start a paladin, I think that I would really raiding the various low level dungeons and completing this quest along the way, A HECK OF A LOT MORE than sitting around in Guk for 12 hours waiting to kill a fellow knight.

When you consider everything, making the GB NO DROP really was the right thing to do, particularly with the addition of this quest. It's now a lot easier for an paladin to get his hands on the blade through QUEST and ADVENTURE, instead of farming some other mob and dishing over platinum, or frying their brain on the horrible shin lord camp.

Verant hit all the right chords with me on this one.

I agree completely that this quest is much better than camping in Guk. Not only are you able to get the sword 10 to 15 levels earlier, but you explore new dungeons that you probably wouldn't have bothered with otherwise. You also can easily work your way up through the levels while questing in each of these dungeons instead of waiting and waiting at one camp for a stinkin' mob to appear.

In my opinion, I would like to see alot less camping for one major drop, and more options like questing for several, more common drops. On Firiona Vie, the Ghoulbane quest is an excellent and popular quest.

I spent all Sunday camped with groups at all points, and no crazed goblin dropped a scroll. I shouted every 30 minutes I was looking for the scroll, so assuming the people were well informed and willing to assist, I spents 14 hours of gaming with this item not dropping. And given the spawn rate, that was a pretty irritating day. Nice XP and loot though.

Can anyone tell from experience if there is any one or 2 places where the scroll drops most often? I have 3 quests to complete in BB and was saving that trip for last.

Thanks

Hiya all that look for Ghoulbane

1. The crazed goblin in HK spawns about every 5 to 20 minutes in the largest room in basement of HK, or in a corner in the romm to the right when entering.
I looted the scroll not of a crazed goblin, but of goblin thief, only had to kill it once after a lot of crazed ones, i think more than 15.

2. Najena is "a skeleton" your enemy to look for, there are 4 places they spawn i found, places are described in other post (date of Apr 14th 2002)

3. BB is the ppalce to look for number 6 on EQAtlas map. Did drop for me off a goblin, not a crazed one, they are random spawns at same spot.

4. Still have to wait for Ghouls heart to drop in Unrest, camped the house at off peak times for about 15 kills so far of ghouls and crazed ghouls in the described spawn points (see other posts, a lot of them concerning this).

Its a lot of fun doin this quest at level 30/31, made almost a level of xp doin it mostly solo (the undead parts ;-), thanks to Instument of Nife ))

Hiya again

Just want to make my post complete-see above

Finally i found a ghouls heart.
Had to camp for overall 14 hours (not nonstop), kill (yes i counted them after a while) 55(fiftyfive) crazed ghouls and about 145 other ghoul types of different levels. Didnt drop for me.
Meanwhile the ENTIRE HOUSE was cleared two times by some highlevels, didnt drop, and they even killed some 20 or more crazed later, no luck at all.
Then i managed to gather some guildies around, and as soon as they entered the zone, before we grouped, some lvl 24 cleric did ooc "anyone need a ghoul heart ?"

LOLOLOLOL

So just dont give up, sometime you will be lucky ;-)

Thank you for the post. I went tonight, shouted my need (all groups were full) and a guy I had grouped with found it. he sent a tell, I came running and have the scroll. On my way to BB to complete things, with Guildies help.

Thanks for the details. Appreciate it.

I was grouped in the Raider room yesterday and 2 dropped within an hour but that was on Antonius Bayle, don't know if there is a difference on servers.

I believe I've seen the Crazed Goblins in the Gobby Guard Room and occasionally in the Gobby Lookout Room. I usually spend about 4 hours at a time when I go to the Guard Room, and I'll see about 2 drop in that time.

Ruathey is very close to the Nek/LS zone. From Nek, if you go to the end of the zone canyon and look to the left you will see a barbarian woman standing there, that is she about -1500 350.

You can gather the four main quest components (heart, hilt, blade, and scroll) in any order but must deal with the quest NPCs in sequence.

  • 1. Ryston Hunsti at -4200 -15200 in West Karana
  • 2. Kanthuk Ogrebane at +2200 +3000 in Butcherblock
  • 3. Llara at -1700 -900 in Dagnor's Cauldron
  • 4. Ruathey at -1500 +300 in Lavastorm

The Ghoul's Heart is dropped by "A Crazed Ghoul" (and probably also "A Ghoul" which is higher level than normal ghouls and spawns alternately in places where the Crazed Ghouls spawn). The Ghoul and Crazed Ghoul seem to be in the mid 20s range.

If you enter Unrest at a higher level, you will have very little trouble getting to the crazed ghouls. At level 30, most of the undead on the way to the crazed ghouls didn't aggro on me, but there are a few MOBs still high enough to pick a fight with you.

    To find the Crazed Ghouls:
  • Use invisibility vs undead and go into the front door.
  • Once inside turn left and follow the hall until you reach the first main room on your right.
  • You'll see some stairs on the south side of the room branching upwards to the east and the west. Go up the stairs which branch to the left (east).
  • Now that you're upstairs, in the southeast corner, take the flight of stairs up to the next level, and there is the crazed ghoul spawn point.

  • There is also another crazed ghoul in a closet if you took the stairs branching right (west) from the ground floor in the main room.
