We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

Ghoulbane does not and will not proc for 342.....the max proc is 162...whoever told you this is full of BS. I have used GB for almost 20 lvls now... got mine at lvl 15....didnt start to proc til lvl 20...seems max slash damage is about 45 or there abouts with str of about 110. Just dont be taken in by false statements...however the sword rocks....make sure you have lots of DEX to get it to proc often though...good luck
No Drop?
# Aug 17 2001 at 9:56 PM Rating: Default
My only question is if the quested version of Ghoulbane is no drop or not. I'm a lvl 52 warrior with a lvl 6 pally twink who needs a Ghoulbane. I had made plans to camp the Lord in Upper Guk for this, but then I discovered this quest.

Is the quested version of Ghoulbane no drop?
What makes it proc more ?
# Aug 15 2001 at 12:58 PM Rating: Default
I have just quested for my Ghoulbane, Lvl 23, grouped in unrest and HHK, found a high lvl camping goblins in BB who let me loot, and a had a high lvl rescue me in najena (thank Grimal).

My question is what ability make it proc more, I have heard WIZ, DEX and INT ?
So which is it, so I can buy some jewelery to increase my currently intermittent procing to something more reliable.

Many thank,

Cervo Ingenuus,
Dwarf Paladin of the 22nd season.

The short answer to your queston is simply to raise your dexterity. But to maximize chance of proccing, you also have to maximize your chance of hitting at all. To do this, you must ultimately increase your strength, agility, and dexterity. Strength affects your ATK rating which determines how often you will swing, and often you will hit an opponent with your primary weapon. Agility affects evasive skills such as dodge, parry, etc. It also affects Riposte, a skill that you get at level 30 which gives you a chance for an extra counter attack. So basically, I'd suggest working on your strength first. This will help you deal more damage in the long run, and help hone your battle skills more efficiently. Dexterity is secondary, even if all you want is to proc a lot. Good luck. Hope this has helped. Be safe!

Actually weapons can proc even if they miss. So strength won't affect that.

But I do agree that Strength is a better stat to shoot for than dex.
quest rateing
# Aug 14 2001 at 2:23 AM Rating: Decent
they only rate this as good? should be higher becuase this is used for our epic sword (in the long run). this and SF are needed for FA and in turn that is needed fo FD! i think someone was high, drunk,or asleep when the rated this.
o and at level 24 i hit for over 30+ damage with it and when it proc on the stupid undead it kills them with no problem. and when it proc's it does 1 hell of a DD spell to the undead. i think it maxes at 145 though, but that ain't bad i mean hey if a skelly argo's you like they do me and it procs right off the bat there dead!

I am willing to give all of my money(40 plat) which i know is nothing to all u 20+ out there but it is to me a non twinked 12 pally who has proudly bought or quested all his armor. ONLY thing given to me is my weapon which is not much too be proud of compared with all the people i group with. Everyone in my group r mostly hitting for 22, all of them got these funky weapons that look really kool like the crystal grinder and some other things. So, anyway, i'll give u 40 plat, a velium battle axe, a charred guardian shield or shiny brass shield(ur choice), and i will show u a two very secret places. One in Rivervale and one if Felwithe. O yah, if any of ya feel in the giving mood, just give it to me for free otherwise, just accept my deal PLEASE!!

Was in unrest last night and came across a goblin heart, looted it like I do all NO DROP items just in case it is some quest I can do. =)

Started reading the quest here, and was liking the story, but what the heck is the end of it?? Is there more to the quest? What happened to the Amstaf (Paladin guy), and the Ambreen (the druid chick)?? This is supposed to be a quest to shed light on what happened to them is it not?

so what happens??

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. Okay so you got a sword smimiliar to the one that Amstaf had but now what?

Seems to me that Verant dropped the ball, or there is more to this story.....

I had some trouble with Kanthuk and Llara. The line you need after the snowstorm, where Kanthuk says "I didn't know what to do [next]" is "What happened next?". ALso, if Llara does not answer when you tell her where you got the pendant, ask her "What about Amstaf?". This is what I did to get them to complete their stories and give me the items. ALso, the post reminding you to have them targeted is VERY IMPORTANT! I got my scroll off a goblin thief in the very bottom of the cellar, the hilt of "a Skeleton" that spawns in the alcove straight ahead from the stairs - He hits pretty hard for a green to a 35 Ranger, the heart of a crazed ghoul at second level of house, and the blade off a crazed in the BB zone - no real wait time for it, but he also hits hard for a blue (I was 33 when i got the blade drop). Hope this helps! Good Luck and above all, HAVE FUN! =)

With much help from my guildmates and friendly cooperation with campers in High Keep, I finally got the Ghoulbane. But one question: How do you continue the quest? I know I'm WAY too low level to do so, but I have to have plans for the future, right? )
Got it today
# Aug 04 2001 at 11:00 AM Rating: Decent
I received my Ghoulbane today and am a happy young Paladin now.

During the questing, I relied on the info found here and it all is correct.

ghoul's heart: Get the map from eqatlas. The crazed ghouls spawn at #5, the southwestern tower room.

Amstaf's scroll: I found it on a crazed goblin, but I heard as well that they drop from thieves.

Blade of Nobility: The crazed goblins spawn at #6 on eqatlas-map.

Hilt of a Nobleman: "a skeleton" pops at the stairs and another place near the stairs.

Many people helped me or let me loot the item. Otherwise it would not have been possible for a Paladin of the 22nd circle to get this fine weapon.

If you ask nice, people are willing to help.

Good luck getting the first holy Paladin weapon.
Ghoulbane - additional quest info

I just completed this quest and it took me about 5 hours total. Alot of the posts here had good information, but I have some things to add and it might be useful to get a few of them together all in one post. I am level 50 so I cant comment on difficulty of mobs to the average person doing the quest and it might take you longer to do some pieces where I was just killing alot of mobs fast.

The items:

ghoul heart - can be found in unrest off crazed or regular goblins. This spawn was broken for a while but now has been fixed and the ghoul heart is dropping regularly again. You should be able to pick up this item while exp hunting if you make it known to the zone that you want to loot one. Crazed ghouls spawn anywhere that regular ghouls spawn but are more frequent in the area of the house just inside the side door by the porch or on the second floor around the fireplace. This item took me about an hour to get slaughtering every ghoul and crazed ghoul in sight

hilt - this hilt used to drop pretty regulary off spawns of 'large skeleton' near the Lava zone, but that is no longer happening. You now need to go to the stair area near the water to get the hilt from "a skeleton" there are two spawn spots there, one will agro you as soon as you enter the room and one will agro from an alcove when you hit the bottom of the stairs. These skeletons are the toughest mobs for this quest. I had to kill three of these skeletons to get the drop.

blade - the blade drops at the ghoul camp in the ruins at roughly 1300, -1400 in BB. Three spawns in this camp, two visible in front of the ruins and one sort of lurking behind a tree. I had to clear the camp twice to get the item.

scroll - this was the easiest item for me to get in Highkeep. I went down to the basement below the bank and it was as usual heavily camped. I just shouted to zone that I wanted to loot the scroll and 15 minutes later I got a shout saying to come loot. Mine dropped off the thief but I suspect that like in unrest it can drop off multiple mobs.

NPCs - Ryshon Huntsi is easy to find along the water in WK near the NK zone. Kanthuk is also easy to find north of the docks a ways in BB. Llara is high up and to the left when facing the tunnel into unrest. Ruathey is a barbarian standing off to the side and to the left as the tunnel from Nektulos widens out into Lava. Everyone of the NPCs gave me trouble talking to them. They would let me get half way through the spiel and then just stop. I had to back up a couple steps in the spiel each time to get them going again. If they quit talking to you just back up and repeat and they should pick up and continue on to the end.

I also had trouble with them giving the last response, and I think I know what the issue is.

You can't just go straight to Ruathey and say, "What bag?". When you give him the note, and talk to him, at some point he despawns and respawns, so fast you don't notice it, except that I lost him as a target. Had the same thing happen on the other NPCs. If you retarget him, and say the last prompt, he will give you his final response, and the reward.

RE: Ahhhh
# Aug 02 2001 at 9:52 AM Rating: Default
Just a verification... the mob in Najena _is_ 'a skeleton'. I got the hilt from the 'a skeleton' that spawns at the bottom of the stairs. I would estimate the drop at about 10%, not 30% (took me hours, others camped it previously without seeing it at all.) Timer is about 10 minutes.

I was told that a group of lower level folks cleared other types of skeletons upstairs and it spawned there (they said in guard room.) I have seen one 'a skeleton' corpse upstairs right inside zone, but did not see the 'a skeleton' spawn when clearing place holders for 4 hours. (Got a really nice set of cloth armor and about 3000 cp though!) ;)

The 'a skeleton' which spawns under stairs cons blue-yellow to a level 24 and is fairly tough for its level.

Cheers and good hunting

RE: nobleman's hilt
# Aug 02 2001 at 10:37 AM Rating: Default
Go through guard room, left tunnel. Through room with elementals. Keep going back (not through either door) and you'll find a room with a couple of tentacle terrors and the entrance to the castle-thing. Enter. There is a magician that spawns there, another in the room behind. Neither of them komakazied my 24 paladin (I basically could run downstairs unmolested, but your mileage may vary.)

Continue on until there is an opening on the left; there is a spiral staircase. Skeleton pops just under it. He'll probably aggro you on the stairs if he's up, so be ready just in case.

Don't miss the left-turn! If you pass it, you enter an area where there is a floor trap that drops you in prison.

See map at www.eqatlas.com - you'll be passing through #1 and then taking the left into the cavern-looking area (that crescent shaped thing is the staircase underwhich mob spawns.)

Good luck

The easiest way to see if the NPCs needed are in their true form is to hail them. If they say something along the lines of "Hello" and that's it, that's the one. The secondary versions won't respond at all.

Camped the Guard Room in HKH with a low-mid 20's group for 6+ hours straight and only saw the scroll drop twice - once off a Goblin Thief and once off a Crazed (we killed lots of Crazeds and Thieves in that time). We were having some problems with a Warrior Room group "pull-stealing" so it is possible that we would have seen more drop in that time period.

I finally got it!

Tips are:
- it will be hard to group in Najena as it was always dead (i only one there) when I was there
- Have some pp saved for ports. If possible, have one porter port you through several places while she/he helps you kill. And you will need some dex for sword to proc.
I got a buff called Spirit of Monkey from someone and my DEX jumped from 80 to 100. Instead of proccing once out out 20 times, it proc like 1 out of 15... not much better, but better.

I finished this quest last night at level 24. Some tips:

1: Ryshon spawns around neg 4000 neg 15000 in WK RIGHT on the shoreline. very easy to miss.
2: The ghoul's heart and the scroll were very easy to get, just go to the appropriate zone and get in a group.
3: The goblins in BB are level 30+, and people will generally let you loot the blade if you ask.
4: The skeleton that carries the hilt is in Najena near the waterfall leading to Najena's room. This sucker is INCREDIBLY tough and I recommend waiting for someone (a 40 SK helped me)to come kill it and asking to loot. If you explain that you need it for a quest people are generally willing to help out.
I'm still camping "A skeleton"
# Jul 26 2001 at 2:13 AM Rating: Default
A lvl 42 Paladin told me that even he has problems with them. I try to solo them, but by they attack quick and hard. Then the corpse run from freeport to najena sometimes involves dark elf guards chasing me, then killing me. One day i'll kill one and i'll loot things other than chainmail or leather items. But the pp is good. But man, I need that Hilt! Its all i need to finally hold a Ghoulbane. If you in Cazic Thule and wish to help another paladin out, look for Lamini.

Where the heck is this guy? I finally got all of the things I need and can't him to initiate the quest. Been checking given loc and having ranger friends track and he's no where to be found.

And on a side note, as the final piece of ghoulbane I got was the hilt, your best bet (at least if you are semi-low level and can't find a full group) is to wait for a high level to kill the skeleton and let you loot it. The skeleton that drops it is in the hallway leading to Najena's room near the waterfall.

Also the other spawns are almost as equally slow, i received my blade of nobility after the 3rd crazed goblin i fought, decided to sty because i had found a great partner and the XP was phenom for a low level paladin. However, the blade only dropped 2 more times in 4 hours.

Been camping -4200, -15500 for like 5 hours and no spawn. Is this location correct?

I looted the ghoul's heart off of a regular ghoul in Unrest. The only difference between it and the other ones was that it conned yellow to me at level 22 rather than blue like they usually do. I am not sure if it was trained on us or not (very hard to tell in that place) but it attacked us on the righthand wall near the fountain. Very easy kill in a group.
