I've been playing this game for over 4 years now and I have come to realise that it has its own demonic personality which loves to taunt you ;-)
When my first character was around level 35, and the paw was quite an awesome item, I decided to do the quest. I kept a log of my kills of this creature... it was 78 before I got that Guk Weed... 78! And over 30 hours of camping for my poor druid.
The other day I was running through helping one of my friends with a different quest. I saw this guy and of course I couldn't resist killing him for old times sakes. Well... you guessed it... he dropped the Guk Weed...
So I guess you could say after 77 kills with no drops he then dropped it for me twice in a row... it's just there was 3 and a half years between the two :)
After months of camping the fungus mutant on and off since getting the platinum ring, I finally managed to finish this quest today. I didn't get either the copper ring or the gold ring until today, since at the time I was occupied with stuff outside of EverQuest. However, I can say that I had killed the mutant a total of 10 or 12 times before today and he dropped none of the quest components needed for the rings. With that out of the way, here's the actual log of how the camp went. I killed the fungus mutant once upon logging on after the Ykesha patch today, spent some time playing as a froglok, then went back to this camp for the remainder of the day. Note that I'm only logging quest components here, and that the fungus mutant would drop random gems/spell components/rusty weapons sometimes.
I killed the mutant a total of 13 times. The bracket mildew was dropped on three occasions (3/13), the weed dropped once (1/13), and the faerix spores did not drop at all. The spores aren't that big of a deal, though, since the silver ring can easily be obtained from Blackburrow if you come at the right time. For information on the platinum ring, see the post under Gynok Moltor in Befallen that I made a few months back.
"Tackball? Who would want to put a tack on their balls?"
im sorry, shaulinshadowmight's post on the drops r BS. the mutant spawns every 17 minutes, how do u explain getting both items 4 minutes apart from eachother?
Killed this thing 20 times now and still no guk weed dropped, i got about 4 bracket mildews though. I just sit there, kill it, then camp for a 15 minutes and wait for the next one to spawn. A friend and i camped it for a long time again last night and still it didnt drop. the rarity on this item is just stupid, might as well go buy the paw of opalla, i could get 1kpp by the time i get the guk weed.
Bagend Proudfoot Lvl 39 Druid of Tunare Rodcet Nife
what are the odds on gynok (the mummy in befallen) dropping the gold ring. He drops the plat ring most of the time.Anyone know the percentage of the time he drops it, cuz ive been camping the fungus mutant for nearly 30s hours, 8 hours straight the past two days. All i get r stupid mildews and gems. I understand this quest is fairly ez compared to most quests because theres basicly four thing u have to do, but Verant sure as hell made up for that with the rarity of that damned weed.
I have everything I need for the paw, save for the degenerated guk weed. I spent 7.5 hours the other day camping him, he dropped the guk bracket mildew 3 times, but didn't drop the degenerated guk weed.
I've found that if you med opposite his spawn point(other side of ladder) you can sit there safely.
Be sure you space your spawns a bit, and you don't have to kill everything that comes into the room. I didn't kill the one froggy that kept jumping from the ladder ledge, nor did I ever kill the mushroom who didn't come near my corner.
I'm going to return as soon as I get some cloudy potions.

Are you sure this is the right gold ring? It should be lore and magic and have a plus and minus stat on it? This doesnt sound right to me but worth looking into though. I am on the Erollsi Marr server and have been camping the mutant for some time now. I am past being aggravated with this drop. I am willing to buy the gold ring if anyone has it and is will to sell. Send a tell to Altaer!
Ack this darn mutant is a pain... i am a 51 druid and i want paw to replace my cone of the mystics. Now i camped him for 5 hour total so far and haven't seen on thing yet for paw and all i need is the degenerated guk weed since i already have copper, silver, and plat rings. Can anyone help me with drop rates. Or if you are on the Drinal server and have a gld ring for the paw quest please send me a tell under the name naeas. Then we can make a deal. Thanks for your time.
I couldn't help but notice that there are non-wisdom casters camping this thing for hours on end. One warrior even mentioned that he was camping for the sole purpose of selling the ring. Granted that Verant has ganked the spawn and drop rates, it seems kind of out of place for a class that would have no use for the actual quest items to camp and loot those items for pure profit. I am heading to Guk tonight to get my weed and brackets to complete my quest. I sure hope that there isn't some level 45 bard or rogue camping there just so that he can loot an item that would help another player much more. I certainly hope that he never needs the white dragonscale and I win the roll...then it will force me to turn to him and say "wanna buy a dragon scale?"....not a good example of gamesmanship. I am not saying that you can't kill or loot, but bear in mind that killing hill giants will probably get you more overall cash than camping Mutie Fun-guy for quest components since there are those of the classes that would benefit from actually performing the quest.
One piece of advice before you go ahead to kill it is its faction hits. If you rely on good faction with Guk on travelling in Upper Guk, killing it may make you kos to Froglok and travelling in Upper Guk can be a pain. As a 49 shaman, I can travel through Upper Guk by inivisible and not getting lost, but others may suffer from killing everything along the way trying to get to Lower Guk.
However, the drops are not common I am sure. I spent about 3 hours there getting nothing (except small change and rusties), but lucky me, the next 2 kills I got the items for gold and copper rings. The small price I paid is that the frogloks now con threateningly instead of dubiously.
2 hours.. Try camping 14 hours once and having it KS'd from you. Selling the Gold Ring on Tunare server for about 750pp. Send a /tell to "Xylum" or "Tonnorre" if you are interested.

The first time i killed him nothing dropped, i was like Ok maybe its rare but 2 hours! I got nothing but i torn page and an ivory! Is this quest broken because I killed it like 7 times and nothing dropped, and to make it worse the fungus drone attacked me while i was oom and killed me! I am 34 it was green to me and it killed me!!! Now i am a 33(lost my level from the drone) pissed druid! well i gave up on this quest and i will just buy the damn thing
I have camped this fool for 20+ hours and still no weed that is why the paw sells for so much. I would consider paying for it after the mindless hell of waiting I have done
hopped into the room... whacked fungus... dropped degenerated weed first try... had the mildew from 3 months ago when I did the same thing... one kill one mildew... is this uncommon? why is paw like 4k when this is so easy to get?
I read these messages about Verant saying that camping shouldn't be done... blah blah blah. Well, let me ask you guys this- how many people would have gotten the components for the paw if they weren't specifically camping it? Do you think walking around casually killing things would likely get you this kind of stuff? Due to their HORRIBLE quest clues I dont think I'd ever have solved any quest except for 'Bone Chips' if it weren't for these web sites.
Amen to that. If these sites didn't exist I'd be in a world of hurt. I just feel sorry for the poors saps who did have to figure it out first and post it. Bless all of you that did have to go through the initial hell of vague quest clues and shared your extremely hard-earnedwisdom.
The mutant is relatively easy. He only has 650-700 hitpoints. He is a ranger class and will try to snare you repeatedly. He hits for very little damage. He spawns in the fungus farm at loc (611,244). Hope this helps and good fungus hunting.
this is the last part of the quest i have to do i came into Beffallen and a guild mate helped me - the camp was about 3 hours he spawned and he died in under a minute - now i have all but the copper and gold rings and i just wanted to know how much they r worth becuse i have heard a lot of horror stories of the camp on this guy and am kida worried that i will have to sit on my hands for 12 lvls (i am 24 now) - becuase i had all but the last page for vanear and my friend wouldn't help me becuase i was lvl 8 and it was an 8 hour spawn - so i had to wait 8 lvls but when i get the paw i will have a wis of 162 i dont think that is half bad any way the point is i want to know how much these last 2 rings r woth on Tarew Marr if i can aford em then i am practricly dont now andyway thanks...(oh and BTw can i do this at 24 or do i have to sit on the container and my 2 rings?) Trelan Spirytcaller <Star Travelors> 24th druid of Tarew Marr May Tunare bless you...

People come here for info on quest and such, not to learn proper grammer or punctuation. Go to college and become a teacher if you wanna learn somebody summin'.
