NOTE: This zone and the East Commonlands zone were revamped and merged into one zone: Commonlands.

The western portion of the Commonlands is more dangerous than the east, having slightly higher level roaming animals, orcs, and occasional hill giants. The area has suffered from werewolf outbreaks, so adventurers are advised to keep an eye over their shoulders.

Dragoon

My level 30 ranger loves sow. Unfortuantly this zone taught me to always use invisible as I ran into the Dragoon fella. He hit with spells that feared my ranger and had him running in circles as the Dragoon hit me at 60 a hit. This happened near the Kith zone. I was bored (waiting for morning to cross kith) and tracking griffons to warn people when this guy hit me with darkness and fear spells.
Play Smart
# May 11 2001 at 3:56 PM Rating: Default
Funny, I never seen any giants here. Nor werewolves, nor have I been acosted by Gix or Griffs (here or in east commons.) You need to play smart. My Barb warrior spent 2 levels here (10 and 11) and died only once at the hands of a Kodiac after beeing beaten on by 2 others. Currently he is also hunting bears and cats for their pelts at 13th level. My 8th level ranger which I currently play has died here only once as well at the hands of 2 dervish thugs when the puller was only supposed to pull one. (I should have offered to pull even though I was the lowest level in the group by 3 levels.)

Bottom line, keep your eyes open. It's a big open zone, you can see them coming a mile away. Fight near the zone if you need to or better yet pull them to the wall near the zone and fight. You'll be happier.

Does anyone know what the factions are for the druids et al. at the druid ring? I know there is at least one other than just the Jagged Pine Treefolk.
When Guards Are Killed

One danger lower level players have is running to the toll booth only to find that the guards have been killed. People camp them, this can result in death of lower level players and arguments in shout.
First, people kill the guards, not me but many do. The Freeport Militia are evil and will be hunted for xp and loot and, well, just because. So do not assume that the guards will be there.
Second, the guards will not help with many things anyway, Kizdean Gix, Wisps, and the Dervs (orcs too I think, not sure).
Also, I understand that saying "No" to the guards will aggro them as they take this as refusing to pay the toll.
Finally, generally if you can reach the toll booth you can reach the East Commonlands zone. Don't stop, or better yet don't run to the toll booth.
People can critize the guard killers or not as they choose, but whatever your opinion, the fact is that they are hunted and so depending on them is not wise.
Werewolves

I've hunted here for a long time -- but never seen a werewolf, or Dragoon Zytl. Yes, Gix has killed me a few times but not the other two. Where do werewolves spawn?

I do not think that there is a set spot, the times I have seen them have been East of the lake and between the Druid ring and the desert, an area which is still much of the zone. If you are tracking I'd say wait by the inn or between it and the wizzie spires.
Trouble is this is a hang out for high levels waiting for TPs or arrived from TPs, plus others hunting guards and druids, so there are lots of folks who respond to the shouts of Werewolf and can kill it quickly.

What and where are the "wizzie spires?" And what are TPs? Also I know there are groups
go out hunting guards - but Druids? Who and why?

I hate this zone

The natural assumption, given the name of the place, is that West Commonlands is a lot like its lower level twin to the east.. with perhaps a few higher level monsters residing therein to accommodate players who had outgrown East Commonlands.

That assumption is dead wrong. This zone is dangerous for low to mid level players. I have spent less time here (I'm a level 24 druid) than just about anyplace else in the game, and have died here probably more often than anywhere else. Between Gix and Zytl.. and the HG's... and the werewolves... and the griffins... I try to steer clear of the place. I spend all my time looking over my shoulder and staying out of danger here.. rather than just trying to go out and hunt. And that sucks.

The only reason I EVER go to WC is when I TP in order to buy something from a vendor in the ring or to get reasonably close to someplace else, i.e., Freeport or Highhold. And the last time I did THAT, a HG stomped on and killed me literally the instant I materialized.

Like I shouted when I TP'd back to pick up my corpse, I hate this zone. I hate, hate, hate, hate it.

I am a level 15 Rogue. I solo here a lot. I love this zone. Wisps are great for loot. Soloing a yng kody is a nice challange. The slight chance of getting aggro'd by a HG or Griff or the dragoons gets the adrenalin going! If I want to group I team up at the cut throat camps. I pop into Befallen to brush up on Pick Locks. When I see a nasty too big for me I drop into stealth mode and sneak away! Once I make 16 I will switch to soloing Mama Kodies. I will continue to beat up on wisps. If I get someone to SOW me then pick pocketing HG's can be a rush.

This zone if fine as long as you learn where Gix and Zytl wander.

Gix is found near inn1 and toll booth
Zytl is usually found around lake and inn2
If you stay along east and north side of zone you should be fine - just remember - don't use the road or they will ambush you.

It is said that Zytl is a Place Holder for Gix and you should only see one of them at any given time.

As for the Giants, Griffins, and Werewolf, they are no more common than the Griffins in EC.

The wisp hunting here is very good - so don't short yourself by completely avoiding this zone

I've only died from a werewolf once (my fault i thot it wuz a frog...Curiosity killed the warrior :P ) and the only time i've ever died from a griff is two times in EC... and dragoon zytl got me once but i'll get my revenge MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA........hehe well i've died 3 times in EC:

1.accidently attacking a merchant durring duel (f8 not f7)
2.walking up to a were wolf like an idiot
3.Dragoon Zytl

well it's a good zone to hunt and it's very good for orc killers...usually uncamped and VERY good for those aspiring tailors (mass spiders and million of bears/cats)...i've lvld from 12-14 here 15 at sister island 16-17 in WC and 18 in timorous deep....clearly u see a pattern here THIS ENTIRE AREA IS GOOD HUNTING!!! and i've had the game for less then a month

I just usually stay near the zone line, although you have to watch for the difference between a Kodiak and a young Kodiak. For both the kodiak and the will o wisp, if another one sees you attacking, it will also attack you. Thus sow is a wonderful thing to have in this zone. I gain much exp. here though.

# Aug 28 2000 at 7:03 PM Rating: Decent
Be on the lookout for the following:

Dragoon Zytl & Kizdean Gix (see other thread)
Griffin
Hill Giant
Nightfall Giant

for those in the low teens and below, Kodiaks can be quite nasty as well as packs of young kodiaks. While the bears don't travel as a group, they WILL agro to help their friends if they're blue or higher. It's very common to see some poor soul trying to make it to the zone or toll booth with 4 or more young kodiaks in tow.

For those of you with faction problems, there are guards which are part of the freeport militia (which are often camped) at the tollbooth, woodelf druids at the druid ring (which are camped occasionally, but not as often) and a pair of dwarves at the inn.

Hmm...You forgot to mention my personal favorite nasty. Werewolves. I've seen those little s.o.b.s do TOTALLY unbelievable amounts of dmg, and they run FAR too fast for my liking. It's also good to note that any time something attacks you that you KNOW you can't beat, run from it immediately (duh) but most importantly DON'T attack it in any way. This way if you manage to get out of its immediate vicintiy, it will often leave you alone. Or if it's not too terribly powerful, you can train it on some level 30+ demi god who can dismiss it with one word. As long as you haven't actually attacked it, you've got a chance of losing it.

This may seem obvious to many, but I figured I would post it for those who don't realize it. This zone (and a few others - most notable Erud's Crossing) is the best place to make money from level 11 to 14. Wisps are your ticket to riches. Once you hit level 11, spend whatever it takes to get a magic weapon and come to this zone (gypsies sell combine long swords for 55 pp, or better yet runed totem staffs sell from player for about 15pp). You will easily make up for it. Wisps are the greatest way to make money and xp per level in the game. Just run around the zone looking for wisps and kill them. The most prolific spawn points seem to be the hills between the druid camp and the mountain, and the hill to the right of the path you zone in from EC, but you can find wisps just about everywhere. Most of the time you will get a burned out lightstone. There are worthless, and I just destroy them. About 1 time in 5, you will get a lightstone. These are worth 9 gp. About 1 time in 15 you will get a greater lightstone. Save these. Once you have accumulated a pile of greater lightstones, set off for Northern Karana (or South Ro if you are evil). Hail each gypsy there until you get the one who is the keeper of the concordance, and then give her a gls. She will give you a concordance of research, and a decent chunk of xp. Turn around to another gypsy and sell it to him for 9 pp. Repeat until you are out of gls. Now check your xp bar and bank account. Pretty nice eh? This is worth good money and good xp. Who can argue with that? Head back to WC and start over. You can pretty much spend all of levels 11 to 14 doing this (and even 15, although some wisps will not give xp by then), and you will easily make hundreds of pp in the process. As far as I know, there is nothing else you can kill at these levels (at least solo) and end up with this type of profit.

To make even more money in this same zone keep killing those green blackbear and you may get lucky and get the rare HQ bear skin which sell in the range of 30pp (used by tailers for backpacks).

Lightstones are worth about 1pp, the Gypsy (Mynessira or something) gives you exp and a research book worth about 1pp.
The Greater Lightstones are worth 9pp, as you stated.
You can make cash selling GLSs and Lightsones right in this zone and EC to PCs who run back and forth doing this quest. You can sell them for 7 or 8pp, saving you the run to EK

Totally right.
A couple more points.
You can sell the books back to the Gypsy who gave them to you in the first place (its quicker and you most likely will be getting some agro when you are in camp trading - Actually as such if you can bring a highre friend with you to act as look out body guard).
If you are selling GLS to PCs charge at least 9pp. They are doing it for the XP hit so you should get AT LEAST the going cash amount.
Soloing them till 15 is fine but does slow down on the XP. I found by 15th I could handle 3 at once as a Warrior.
You cant run to guards if you get over whelmed, they wont help. But stand near guards if feasible just in case other MoBs wander by.
Can pull with a standard arrow, it just doesnt do any damage.
They are very social so be careful about when/ where you pull
Good hunting

There is an old dwarvish proverb--"Revenge is a dish best served cold." And it is very cold in the Commonlands.

Ahh, my friend, my foe, Kizdean Gix. I am composing this as a paean, a tribute, a funeral dirge to my oldest and dearest enemy, the dark elf Necromancer, Kizdean Gix. And it goes something like this:

Neener-neener-neener! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

OK, let's settle the style down a little bit. Put bluntly, I don't think there's a single "good" character on Antonica that doesn't want to open up a fresh can on Kizdean Gix, single-handedly the most aggressive, capable, and infuriatingly deadly NPC you'll see for some time. Parked just southeast of the central inn in the zone, Gix delights in slaughtering unsuspecting visitors who rest in front of the inn (sitting down increases his aggro radius, like most MOBs). He cons medium blue to high blue to a 20th level paladin (which puts him at 17-19), but he fights much more effectively than that (about level 22). He casts lots of high-powered necro spells and hates everyone except for DE necros and SK's.
(A side note--he is a quest NPC for them, so make sure they've finished their business with him before you do this--it's just good form.)

As soon as I hit 20th level (and got some xp padding, just in case), I set about achieving some small measure of justice for those Gix had slain. Taking two others with me, a 15th level bard and a 17th level enchanter, we took the fight to him quickly and mercilessly, never letting Gix near the caster, who pounded him with lightning after lightning. What happened? Heh. Gix and I killed each other. I killed him, and his DOT killed me (I hadn't been watching my health bar).

Do you know what I did? I went right back and did it again with someone else, a 22nd level warrior. This time, the warrior tanked, and I healed him. Worked famously. The warrior still had three bubbles of health left when Gix had fallen. So, my best advice is to designate a primary tank to draw Gix's fire, and have a healer handy to pump his health.

Oh, yes, and I should mention that killing Gix causes Dragoon Zytl to spawn near the lake. He's much tougher. Ahh, a task for another day, no doubt.

Zytle is blue to my 35 Druid, probably low 30s. His Magic Resistance is very high. I don't recall any harm touch so I am not sure what he is, Warrior? His ability with 2 hander is very high, so getting a snare to stick for kiting with his high MR and good running speed is difficult.

A couple things on Gix:
- He definately is a Shadow Knight.
- The Dwarves in front of the Inn WILL NOT help with him, UNLESS, you have a charmed animal fighting him as a pet and it runs (it heads to the inn). They KSed me twice as my druid when I just wanted a young kodiak to take the harm touch (I love all animals, they come in handy at times).
- Killing him is reputed to spawn Dragoon Zytle, and this has been my experience. Zytle seems to spawn west of Gix's spot, toward the Wizzie Pyramid, and Desert-side. Many times on killing Gix I have soon heard Dragoon up, and others have confirmed that the general belief is that killing Gix spawns Zytle. It fits too, revenge on Gix sparks a new circle of revenge as Zytle terrorizes people. - His hates are more varied than the discussion above might lead you to believe, my friend's halfling druid (forget what God he worshipped, Karanas?) would not aggro him, though my agnostic High Elf enchanter would (makes sense, DEs hate High Elves and vice-versa, God or no God). So no hard and fast rule, con him when you see him.
- He is way underconned and had nasty Magic Resistance, I'd say he fights more like level 25.
I hate not being able to kil the big baddie as my chanter, but I want to be non-KOS everywhere I can.

While he may only be friendly toward DE necros and shadowknights (I can't say for certain) he is "dubious" to my human agnostic enchanter. I've made no efforts to increase faction either way so I suspect it has to do with not being elvish and my lack of deity. If you're dubious you can sit down next to him with no problem, I've done it. :)

Dragoon Zytl is also dubious to me.

Fortunately, you can see Gix from the toll booth so it's a good landmark to use so you don't accidentally get too close when you just want to con him.

VERY IMPORTANT! The human guards will NOT help you with Gix. I do not know about the dwarves at the inn however. An off topic side-note, the guards won't help with wisps, either.

Crafted Dwarves
# Aug 23 2000 at 8:52 AM Rating: Decent
I've found that the Crafted Dwarves (The Tonsmiths who hang out outside the Inn) are good experience from 34-40, they hit hard, and have above average Magic Reisistance, but the Befallen zone is very close, allowing for an escape if the pull goes wrong.

The loot is not too shabby, in addition to the usual components, hey will drop up to 4.5pp and I even looted an emerald of Timtok once.

However, the faction for killing these (KoTruth, FP Merchants, and Ill. Merchants) might discourage people. If you have a good group (And don't mind losing the faction) I would instead go for the Druids.

The Druids are a much harder kill but the loot is crazy good. :)

The orc camp here is an untapped well of experience. Most people just sit at the camps in WC waiting for spawns with 3 or 4 other groups doing the same while a SIX (yes, 6!) spawn orc camp sits one zone away ripe for the picking. The best thing is they arent all linked when you pull them! The western 2 are linked, as are the central 3, while the eastern 1 is alone. This means that you can solo here when you can handle 1 orc, or 2, all the way up to 6. Any group sitting in EC complaining about lack of orc spawns needs to get their butts in gear and walk the 5 minutes it takes to get to some real orc action.
Wisps and Bears Hanging in Mid-Air
# Aug 22 2000 at 4:11 PM Rating: Good
Remember those deathfist pawns, or fire beetles, or decaying skeletons hanging in mid-air in the newbie zones? Well West Commonlands has them too and they are much more dangerous, or rewarding, depending on how prepared you are. Young Kodiaks and Wisps will spawn in WC in groups of two to four mobs, and when they first spawn they hang in mid air for a time. When they drop they then start walking and slowly separate. Mostly this is a danger for people who are trying to hunt one mob at a time, and I post this here mostly as a warning.
However, if you are a higher level character who still needs (or wants) to hunt wisps for the money, or the burned out lightstones for research, this can be a blessing. Get your best area effect spell out, walk up to the hanging stack of wisps, and blast away.
