This is the fourth task in a series of five. Its purpose is to update a step in a grand task, 'The Invasion of the Defilers'. After finishing the third task, 'Defile the Defilers', you can request this task from Valthun Woodswatcher in the Kirathas village of the Hills of Shade.

You say, 'Hail, Valthun Woodswatcher'

Valthun Woodswatcher says 'Welcome back! I appreciate that you've come to help us. Amber tells me these strangers call themselves 'Humans'. She has spent far too much time mingling with their kind. How can my daughter be so kind to creatures that are so cruel? They are preparing an attack as we speak. Go to the northern edge of the village and seek out Aramus, he will tell you what we need.'

Speak with Aramus 0/1 (Hills of Shade)

You say, 'Hail, Aramus the Elder'

Your task 'Defense of the Village' has been updated.

Aramus the Elder says 'Ah, more help, and just in time! We have devised a way to repel the Human attackers. We need you to gather materials for traps. I have instructed the scouts as to where the traps need to be placed. Once you have what is needed, find the hunters and give the items to them, they will make and place the traps.'

Deliver enough materials for four pit traps to the hunters to the north 0/4 (Hills of Shade)

Deliver enough materials for four snare traps to the hunters to the north 0/4 (Hills of Shade)

Deliver enough materials for two bear traps to the hunters to the north 0/4 (Hills of Shade)

Note: You can turn in all batches to one elf now.

Upon turn-in:

Your task 'Defense of the Village' has been updated.

a Kirathas Hunter says 'Well done! I can use this to bolster our defenses. I appreciate your help.'

Speak with Elder Scout Tuluria 0/1 (Hills of Shade)

You say, Hail, Elder Scout Tuluria'

Your task 'Defense of the Village has been updated.

Elder Scout Tuluria says 'You're just in time. I need you to head to the north and ready your traps. You need to defend that area between our two guard towers on that side of the village as long as you can. Help out hunters to use the traps to your best advantage. Prepare yourself quickly, they will be arriving any moment.'

Defend the village and your post until the invasion ends! 0/15 (Hills of Shade)

Ensure that the traps are used to the best effect 0/5 (Hills of Shade)

You say, 'Now'

The 'enemy' mobs are called "an invader". Several of them will attack the village. When they get close enough, target one of the traps that spawn along the northern flank and trigger it while visible (you can have ivu up to avoid aggro). You may also repeat this portion of the quest in case you did not get all the updates before the invaders were killed off or despawned. Simply hail the Elder Scout again.

a bear trap is triggered manually and springs into action.

a snare trap is triggered manually and springs into action.

a pit trap is triggered manually and springs into action.

Your task 'Defense of the Village' has been updated.

Speak with Elder Scout Tuluria 0/1 (Hills of Shade)

You say, 'Hail, Elder Scout Tuluria'

Your task 'Defense of the Village' has been updated.

Elder Scout Tuluria says 'You did well. Few passed into the village from the north, but many of the enemy did indeed enter the village. I have an unpleasant duty for you to perform now. We know the losses we took on the outskirts of the villages among our scouts. I need you to go to the ancestral crypt and speak to the grieving survivors and get a count of those that of those have been lost. It will be a somber task, but we must know of our losses in order to determine what to do next.'

Speak to the grieving elves in the crypt to get an accounting of the village's losses 0/1 (Hills of Shade)

You will need to hail the elves in the crypt. They are flagged as undead so you can have normal invis up to get past the blobs but watch out for the other critters. You do not need to be in immediate line of sight and may not need to be very close.

a weeping elf says 'I...I don't know why you need to know. But they killed my wife and two-year old daughter. They knocked me out and let me live, but killed my defenseless little daughter? How could that be right? How...'

a dolorous elven maiden says 'My mentor, the fine wood carver called Thelon was cut down in the middle of town. Did they fear his small woodcarver's blade? Or is it just that they hate life? He was a gentle, kindly old fellow who did nothing but make beautiful things. She shakes her head as tears crawl down her dusty face.'

an elven child says 'My two older brothers were slain as they defended our home. they wounded the villains grievously and thus I was spared.' She weeps uncontrollably for many long moments before muttering, 'it should have been me...'

an elderly elf says 'Everyone near and dear to me is dead. My wounds are painful and may yet mean my death as well. But what care I? All of the reasons for my life have been placed here in this cold crypt, why should I not join them?'

a sorrowful elf says 'My son was killed by those beasts! At least he wounded one, causing the rest to flee before they found the rest of the family.'

Speak with Valthun to tell him what you have learned 0/1 (Hills of Shade)

You say, 'Hail, Valthun Woodswatcher'

Despite their ghostly nature, these Elddar were deeply saddened by the loss of friends and family. It is clear to you now that these elves are not seeing exactly the same world that you see. They can only see the past, a past that they appear to relive over and over again. What tragedy could have caused such a thing?

This completes this sub-task and updates a step in the grand task, 'The Invasion of the Defilers'. You can now request the last task in the series, 'Last Stand Into Eternity'.

Avoid doing these quests as a group

Just a thing to note if you do this quest, and that line of quests in general.

If you do it as a group, and everyone in the group hail Aramus at same step, hunters will spawn on each other (a pack for each member of the group), making it difficult to target for handing in the batches.

So make sure you do it one at a time, instead of all group at the same time for these steps.

Note: You must turn in one batch of items to a different elf each time unless you camp/zone first. If you don't, the elf will eat the subsequent batches.

Just turned in all sets to the same elf, right after another. Step updated just fine.

Some notes about the invader event

Here are some notes about the invader event. First try doing it during daylight. It helps. The event ends when all the defending Hunters are killed, but don't go crazy trying to save their lives. They aren't slouches and I have seen them KS me. lol. It is more important to keep the Elder alive. As long as he stays alive, the event can be restarted sooner. Just remember to hail him before hailing the scout leader again. Most important, your kill count doesn't clear if the event fails. My first attempt I had 1 trap sprung and 6 invaders dead. I restarted during daylight and finished the rest, although I accidently killed a hunter when I used Beam. I ran to buy another mask to discover the mask didn't melt away from me accidently killing the hunter.

The positions of the five elves in the crypt are correct but they change places with each other. I have been hunting in the zone in general and the crypt in particular and have observed that they seem to switch places every couple of days or so.

Me and two other clerics from my guild did this event yesterday.

The materials you gather for the hunters in the event need to be handed to each hunter. If you look at the quest description it will tell you the components of each trap, should be 4 pieces of materials each which is ironically the same amount you can trade to NPC's. Start at the end of the line of hunters and make you way down, cause if you hand in materials to a hunter you have already handed it to, it will eat your materials and you'll end up short and have to re=farm the materials.

Once you hand in all the materials to the hunters you hail Elder Scout Tuluria to start the event. Trap will spawn in front of the hunters. The invaders will spawn eventually and attack the hunters. The thing is, you need to have them in front of the hunters in order for the traps to work right, not behind or to the side of the hunters or else you'll waste the traps and not kill the invaders. Invaders can be mezzed or charmed so that's what we did to pull them in front of the hunters, doesn't have to be right on the trap either, just in front of the hunter. Kill 5 invaders by traps and then all you have to do is kill invaders from that point on.

Make sure to keep an eye on the ends cause if invaders slip through and kill Aramus the Elder, the event stops and all the hunters disappear. You can wait for Aramus the Elder to respawn, usually only about 10 minutes and re hail him/her to get hunters to respawn. Then hail Elder Scout Tuluria twice to start the event again.

20 minute respawn timer...sucks

If doing this with a group of say, 3 people, you'll need a total of 36 sharp sticks. There are only 6 spawns, so that means 6 rotations, or 2 hours of waiting for respawns.

That is nothing compared to the amount of time it ends up taking to get 8 springy young branch for each character while 3 boxing. 17 treants later and only 3 drops. This will take hours. EDIT: Took a total of 128 treants to finally get the drops i needed for 3 characters.

I was wondering if a few clerics were at this task if they would all get the updates if in a raid or they were grouped 2 or 3 with mercs?

I just finished this part of the quest. I didn't get the locations of the elves in the crypt but there are 5 hails needed. I sent in a correction to add the sorrowful elf.

This is actually one of the better and more fun subtasks and actually pretty easy when you get the mechanics down. A few things I discovered is that the traps are easy to spring but you need to target the trap before you say "Now".
Don't target the mob.

It seems that you can pull the mob near the trap, then target the trap, then say 'now' and the mob will poof and give you credit for the kill for the number of trap kills. A good strategy is to trap kill the mobs as soon as they spawn because if you need more trap kills toward the end of the wave it is most likely the mob will have lots of damage and be killed before you can move him near a trap. The first two mobs of a wave are pretty easy to lure to a trap with aggro.

Another thing is that after the initial hail it takes a few tics for the hunters to spawn, and then another 6 or 7 tics for the traps to spawn in front of them and then another 6 or 7 tics for the invaders to spawn. The invaders spawn right on the hunters and sometimes 3 will spawn or aggro one hunter.

As long as 1 hunter is up the invaders will respawn four more invaders after you kill them all. The respawn may take a minute or two.

To respawn invaders hail Elder Scout Tuluria twice.

RE: Ensure that the traps are used to the best effect (0/1) - Hills of Shade

You say, 'now'

this should be 0/5

Also, if you didn't figure it out, say 'now' is how you trigger the traps.
Trap Materials

Each type of trap will require specific items. You must supply each of the scouts with enough to make at least one trap.

Pit traps require three sharp sticks and a thin stone slab to cover it over.

Snare traps require a pair of springy young branches, a fishing net and bag of large hooks to complete the snare.

The bear trap is made from a serrated long blade, a strong tree limb, a dried tree limb and bit of heavy rope vine.

(taken from the quest window's quest description, though it's all part of one paragraph there)

The second to last step requires you to hail a bunch of elves in the crypt.

a weeping elf
a doloros elf maiden
an elderly elf
an elven child
a sorrowful elf

To update the step, you have to hail all five of them. If you die, or if you zone, you have to start over and hail them all over again.
