At the end of the Kobold Shaman Artifacts quest, Breya sends you to Gans Paust.

You say, 'What of your brother?'

Gans Paust says, 'What? How do you know fo my brother? Ahh I assume Breya told you. He's been gone for quite some time with no word sent on his progress or his wellbeing. I need to find someone to [check on him].'

You say, 'I will check on him for you.'

Gans Paust says, 'Thank you, adventurer. He's one of our people's most knowledgeable geologists and has left to survey an island out in Erud's Crossing. He was sending monthly reports until two weeks ago when his report never showed up. I'm worried something may have happened to him. Take this note to Yelesom and bring back something to assure me of his safety. A reward fitting a Deepwater Knight shall be yours upon your success.'

Receive Note from Gans to Yelesom, which reads:

Brother, Your report is two weeks late. I fear something has harmed you and have sent this courier to inquire about your well being. Please send the courier backwith message of your health and progress. Regards, Gans.

In Erud's Crossing, locate Yelesom and give him the note. You get typical courier experience (that is, not much), and possibly a couple of faction adjustments.

Yelesom Paust says, 'Gans sent you to check on me did he? Well you can tell my dear brother that the surveying has been halted. One of those furballs has stolen my tools, making my job impossible. Kerrans, kobolds, gnolls, we're constantly under siege by these primitives. Anyway, perhaps you could [help me]?'

You say, 'I will help you.'

Gans Paust says, 'Wonderful. The beast took my tool kit whilst I slept at camp. I awoke only to see him paddling frantically out into the ocean in a small boat. He couldn't have gone very far. If you stand at my [camp] and look towards the next closest head stone, you will be facing the direction in which the Kerran thief fled. Swim straight out from there and you should see his cunning little boat.'

You say, 'Where is your camp?'

Gans Paust says, 'My camp is next to the head stone on the eastern most portion of this island. The Kerran may have dropped some of my tools inot the ocean as it fled. Please return the complete tool kit and I'll make sure my brother rewards you.'

When you swim out to the water to collect the stolen tool kit, the magnifying glass is sitting on the ground not to far from the shore. The loc to it is neg 600, pos 2000.

The hammer looks like a hammer and is on the ocean floor right by the wall. You will have to swim down the deep drop off here to find it. The loc is neg 526, pos 2287.

The 'frantic kerran' is on a boat at loc pos 33, pos 3158. Kill him and get the tool kit off him. Combine the maginifiying glass and the hammer in the tool kit, then take it back to Yelesom. Give it to him, and he will give you a return letter to take back to his brother. (it looks like a book and you can't read it.)

Go back to Erudin and give the letter to Gans Paust for your reward.

Gans Paust says 'Ahhh, thank you for your effort, ______. I'm glad he's doing ok despite the theft. I now award you the Sleeves of Midnight Sea. May they protect you until the time of our glorious redemption.'
Your faction standing with Deepwater Knights has been adjusted by 25.
Your faction standing with High Council of Erudin has been adjusted by 3.
Your faction standing with Heretics has been adjusted by -3.

"Doing ok" is an odd word choice for a fantasy roleplaying game, heh. I almost didn't notice Gans Paust then refers to "the time of our glorious redemption" - a little allusion to the end-of-times beliefs of Prexus worshippers?

Be warned the Frantic Kerran backstabs. It was a close fight for my Classic-geared level 20 Erudite cleric. Also, he is currently not in a boat as Yelesom said, but instead on the bottom of the ocean. yaaay

About the tools: the magnifying glass looks like a typical bag. And even with 50 or 60 swimming skill, I drowned the first time I tried to retrieve the hammer. Also take note that the incomplete tool kit weighs 25 pounds, the hammer another 6, and the magnifying glass 0.5. Sometimes, when you combine items, their total weight changes; but not this combine. The resulting complete tool kit weighs 31.5 pounds, which could make you encumbered and make it even harder to swim.

Almost impossible...

Sorry I forgot to post the message...
At lvl 22 I swam out to the boat since I couldn't find someone to cast levitate on me and I found it almost impossibe to fight this cat in the water. He had me down to 33% health before I even hit him, so I gated back to the island(I was bound there) before I died. After I was ready for another attack I swam back out and when I was in range I cast fear on him then immediatly started swimming back to the island. It took 3 casts of fear before I could make it back to the island safley then I waited till he steped on shore and I rooted him then I nuked him. Once you get him on land he's no problem so if you can't get levitate then just use fear and this part of the quest isn't so hard.

Prexus clerics are good clerics, but you obviously mean can clerics worshippng Quellious do the quest. The answer is yes, but you're going to have to turn in a few kobold fangs first. I think I turned in around 20 to get my faction good enough, maybe more.

I have a 7th, YES 7th level cleric, and has the sleeves and the Coat... you have to do molar quest, at least one, to change faction enough to be given the quest period... The armor is cool... Check it out sometime..

For all those who can't attack the cat... I just got too close and the little bugger came after me..., was a long pull back to shore, and I almost died... I highly recommend just fighting in the water

Killing the Kerran
# Jul 06 2001 at 8:57 AM Rating: Default
I completed this quest at level 18 and have some tips:
Get someone to cast levitate on you and go out and pull the kerran to shore, it is MUCH easier to kill him that way. Pulled him to shore by zombie sunken ship. This thing was yellow to me and hits hard and quick so have a healer nearby.
Armor looks dark blue/violet.

i just got done doing this quest.....it is HARD! its impossible to find the hammer and magnifying glass unless you have the above loc's....heres a few tips for all you Prexus Kinghts ;P :
to find the 2 tools go to the oger on wisp isle and walk down to the beach(should be a little pinninsula thingy there) the glass is near the shallow water the hammer is deep down at the ocean floor at the drop off...i did this with my swimming at 95 so wasn't too tough...
next about the kerran....
he is in a row boat WAAAAAAAYYYY out in the ocean...he coned yellow at 18...was easy as monsters go, but i had to use LoH...its hard to fight him however because you need to go up for air ever so often thropugh the fight and you keep sinking while he stays at the top....he had a bronze dagger and stabbed for a lot if you expose your back while going for air... I headed back and got the sleeves and i must say....... they are the BEST looking sleeves you could possibly have on your eru pally ;) they look like lambent! I was orriginally planning on going to HH after the quest, but I decided im going for the greaves too! sooo..... i might be posting on the kobald artifacts quest page next :) however I believe it will be a bit harder to get the legs cause Krode is impossible to get to! I might have to try and get a lvl 30-40 to pull him for me or something...

Sheesh, stop complaining, since they added the warrens it is not very difficult at all for an evil erudite cleric to raise faction with them since killing Elial Brook in Toxx forest raises faction with the Deepwater Knights. The entire evil erudite city is on Heretic faction, that means you can camp the necro till you lose a level of faction with Heretics, then kill Kobolds till you gain it back. Simple
RE: Faction for the quest
# May 07 2001 at 1:44 PM Rating: Default
Simple? I don't think you're paying attention, here.
Heretic priests worship Cazic Thule. I really doubt it's possible to get above indifferent, no matter how many times you kill Elial Brook. If you've done the kobold molar quest in Paineel more than a few times, I'd put money against it.
dammit
# Apr 13 2001 at 12:56 AM Rating: Default
As if the heretic priests don't get screwed enough as it is, Verant couldn't put the quest in the other temple where heretics aren't kos.... it had to be the deepwater knights.

"I will check up on him" (is a correction in the above quest)

Yelesom Paust can be found in the hole in the island at Erud's crossing. He is slow to spawn at times so be patient. His camp is at -885 +1658. Find the ogre female and then run straight into the water. In the water you will find a magnifying glass (looks like a bag) and then you must swim out and down to loc +544 +2281 to find the hammer. (looks just like a hammer) Then you swim out to the loc +30 +3164 to the frantic kerren. When you kill him you receive the incomplete tool kit and a bronze dagger. Put the items: glass and hammer in the kit. Return them to Yelesom and he gives you his reports. Return those to Gans and he rewards you with the Midnight Sea Sleeves. AC: 8 Sta+1 Mana +20 sv Cold +3 sv Magic +3 Eru Pal Clr only. They have a dark blue look to them and they are MAGIC ITEM, LORE ITEM , NO DROP.

My Cleric Awsha al`Wahib to my knowledge is the first one on the MT server to have successfully solved this quest. She is now tryign for the Midnight Sea Mail Coat to further the look. I only wish they had more visible pieces for this armor for the look is truely wonderful in my opinion.

Awsha al`Wahib
Priestess of Prexus,
of the 20th Prayer.
correction: Can kill him...how?
# Apr 09 2001 at 10:18 PM Rating: Default
Ok, So I decided to try and kill the frantic kitty again. Sang some songs, attacked... nothing. Then suddenly, for unknown reasons, I hit and we fought. Tough fight, only because I was in the water and kept sinking and losing sight of him. I'm 22nd song bard, he conned blue, and I basically tanked the fight. (Try to keep ON the rowboat... should be easier.)

Kitty had the toolkit and bronze dagger. Killing the kitty causes your Kerran Island faction to go down. I was at amiable, and stayed at amiable afterwards, so it can't be much of a faction hit. (right?)
kill that frantic kerran
# Apr 09 2001 at 10:04 PM Rating: Default
Um, I can target him, but can't attack! I found the hammer and lens on my swim back. I can man the helm of the boat to move it (leaving the cat jumping and swimming in the same place). So, how can I attack?

btw, I'm a human bard, so starting this quest is a little silly, but I like quests. Would you need to be an erudite pally/cleric just to attack?
How to Complete the Quest here
# Apr 03 2001 at 8:01 PM Rating: Good
Do exactly what it said to do above, then here is the addition to the quest and what you get for doing it.

When you swim out to the water to collect the stolen tool kit, the
maginifiying glass is sitting on the ground not to far from the shore.
It looks like a bag.
The loc to it is neg 600, pos 2000.

The hammer looks like a hammer and is on the ocean floor right by the
wall. You will have to swim down the deep drop off here to find it.
The loc is neg 526, pos 2287.

The 'frantic kerran' is on a boat at loc pos 33, pos 3158. Kill him and
get the tool kit off him. Combine the maginifiying glass and the hammer
in the tool kit, then take it back to Yelesom, give it to him, and he
will give you a return letter to take back to his brother. (it looks
like a book and you can't read it.)

Go back to Erudin and give the letter to Gans Paust. This is the end of
the quest and he will give you:

Midnight Sea Mail Sleeves
Magic, Lore, No Drop
Cleric, Paladin Only
Erudite only
Stamina 1, mana 20, cold resist 3, magic resist 3, weight 3.4

They have a very dark blue look that matches the Midnight Sea Mail
Coat. It's some nice looking armor.

Finished this Quest, a lvl 20 cleric.
The little boat is out passed the ship the zombie sailors guard....keep swimming and youll see it, the cat conned blue to me. kill it and get broken tool kit
go back to shore.
now head back to small boat again, but this time stay on bottom, get enduring breath if possible. you will see a little bag, grab it..it contains one of the items you need to put in the tool kit...some kind of magnifying glass.
swim about halfway to little boat and you will see a hammer laying on the ground..thats the other item, put both in kit and combine, then take that back to guy down in the crater. he gives you a note, take that back to erudin
