As per snailish, it's OK to update entries which haven't been updated since 2008, so I'm just doing a drive-by here to say that it still drops the Crude Animal Silk and Words of Neglect.

Thanks. While unlikely in the case of the two items you mentioned, it's the spirit of the idea that counts!

I figured I'd check through my logs to see if there was anything to see. A guide-run event sent me out to the Dreadlands, hence the random tundra yeti encounter. Smiley: smile
very good camp for mage

I started to camp the cave at lvl 29 and they were yellow and red for me. Very easy and without danger, and the xp are flying, i recommend this place.

Looks like an extremely rare drop, but I got a peridot off one of these today. I was going through the tunnel there when it attacked me. When it dropped the dot, I started looking for others in case it was a common thing... no such luck, hasn't dropped one since.

Camped these in the northern cave as a 38 pally, dinged in about 4 hours pulling the lone yeti as you enter and the three to the right, they don't aggro unnless you get real close and you can single pull everytime with the stun line. easy camp, good xp, loot was ok 100pp or so for lvl in cash and various other loot which i haven't sold yet.

Highly recommended camp for any lvl 38 that fancies a break from grouping.

I know that a 39+ mage with Fire pet can just about clear the caves and hive time to med back up(No Kei). Good for xp until about 44ish

does anyone know if theres enough spawns, and are they easy enough for a level 40 druid (200wis/35mana) to quad

# Jan 23 2003 at 12:06 AM Rating: Decent
With the pathing in the caves it would take alot of work to pull them out for a kite. You would probably be better off kiting chickens, brutes or Dogs time vs xp.

Only 7 Yetis in the Northwest cave, in a cluster of 3, 1, and 3. The most you could do is a triple-kite, if you pull them out of the cave. They also seem to have a 20 minute spawn timer.

Very easy kill, about as easy as killing Gorlas back in my lower 30s. Only concern is that mana drain with these retards is absurd if you're not careful.

These things are great xp solo at 31. With fire nukes even red cons go down with a full mana bar.

On my last post I forgot to add... lvl 39 shammy pet, even buffed up is no real match for a yeti. Our pets aren't tanks. They will last for a little while but they can't beat the things so thats why I normally don't use mine until the yeti actually hits me. Until then it takes more mana than its worth to try and keep your pet alive.
lots to say

Being a barbarian shaman I was pleased to find that I could camp these at 40 and get essence of winter for my cultual smithing. I read up on the tundra yeti at this site before starting my little adventure then using the info gathered went ahead and lvled twice so far in alot less time than I expected. Most everything stated here is true. They dont resist cold very well, if you get to close they will agro you but as long as you pull with spells you should be fine cause they dont tend to help each other.

Here's what I do. First off, form of the bear. Barbarians as you know if you play one, can't see in the dark. The yeti caves aren't that great to see in, so I started using ultra vision then discovered an added bonus to the bear form; it helps my vision. So, not only do I get a couple extra hp per tick and 5 wis, but I dont need ultra vision in the caves anymore. On mobs I have a tendancy to kite I normally use 2 dots in my spell line up... not needed here. 3 venom of the snake dots will usually kill them or come close. So, enstil, poison dot, sit down in a safe place and wait. If he breaks, run a few feet and cast enstil again. If by chance he does close range and attack you, have your pet around for some help. (you dont "need" him but if you use him for the added damage when things get a little out of control he does help)

If the Yeti gets in your face, nuke with winter's roar. It doesn't take long for the yeti to get to the break point then kill him off.

Note: they have about 1300-1600 hp from what I can tell.

If you're camping the north cave, when they break, they kinda get stuck in the first corner on your way out. This is a great thing. I usually sit down and canni dance while my pet kills it off. (I never have more than half mana when I pull one. So, if the pull goes perfect, by the time I'm done killing it, I've got more mana and health then when I started.)

Drops... the post a few posts down is pretty accurate. I dont get very many essence of winters but they do actually drop (and no they aren't sold on any vendor unless someone sold them to the vendor) and I've seen 1 crystalized sulfur on a yeti just yesterday.

Wilil Ironbear (currently 42 season shaman of the north and climbing) May the 6 hammers not hit you on the thumb.
Yeti killing
# Dec 24 2001 at 12:04 PM Rating: Good
Ive camped these yetis from level 39 to 45, as a magician its very easy to do. All ya need to do is make a fire pet and burnout him, dual wield him if you want. enter the caves almost always there will be one walking in the wall then in a little bit will teleport back to one of the caves, walk out and repeat, slaughter him off by pulling with a level 1 nuke or sending pet in, Nuke once when yeti at 75% life, then again at 50% life, do this and he will start running and pet will finish him. My fire pet is maybe 65% life after each battle but he regens very very quickly. 4% of his life per 6 seconds. kill the one on the left, then move into one of the rooms. To stop from accidentally getting agro of a wandering one kill the one on left or right, then med where he was standing since he wont pop again for another 16.5 minutes i believe. slaughter off the other 2 spawns then move out, kill the single one at the intersection and move to other room, watch out for wandering ones.

I used to use a earth pet to solo tundra yetis but i would have to DS him every battle, id pull with malise, then nuke twice which with 39 mage spells takes around 470 mana per kill. I found out the fire's damage shield seems better than the one you can cast and fire seems to live longer. i only use around 300 mana per kill now which is less than a blue mana bar.

Oya dont use malise, there is no reason to the yetis almost never resist your nuke anyways, almost all the time you do full damage.

I hope this helps you all, i moved onto the glacier yetis and Bloodgills in LOIO at 45 although you can camp tundra yetis until 47 or so for exp.

Right on! Only difference for me was, I use water and pulled with malise. Could take out each cluster of 3 with a full mana bar (150 INT and +90 mana, give or take)

Recent Experience
# Oct 04 2001 at 12:36 PM Rating: Good
As a magician, starting soloing here from early 39, now became 43th lv and they still give acceptable xp. (about 2 blue per 7 yeties) I think none of them conned green to me yet.

I hunted yeties for 20+ hours and found that the spawn time is somewhat longer than 16m 30s, maybe around 19m. I didn't count roamers cuz I haven't seen them recently.

This is the best soloing place I've ever seen, esp. for a magician. And no PL'er or group comes cuz there are not enough spawns enough for them. So this place seems to be for soloing only.

ps. note on looting:
cash: maximum of 4pp 12gp some.
common: 2 Frozen Daturas, worth 1pp to vendors
uncommon: Essence of Winter. Words, runes, and pages for 34lv.
rare: mid-range gems like emeralds, black pearls, flawless aquamarines, etc.
Not bad really, considering their generous xp!

I agree this place is awesome for a mage. They spawn about four or so in a room off to the left and they go down fast. Malise, heal pet, aoe and then just heal or nuke whatever you do. One by one they fall and one bub of exp after bub you get. no need for group cause they soak up your easy exp. went from 39-41 quick. your a fool not to try and kill these things the loot sucks but what loot doesn't suck that gives easy exp
40 Mage solo tatics
# Sep 03 2001 at 10:33 AM Rating: Default
These are probably the best thing going for mages in DL. I can get double to three times the experience soloing these that I can grouping in DL. I've soloed both the northern caves and the southern ones and have been getting 1/4 to 1/3 blue bubble per kill. Exceptionally good for a hell level.

Another thing I like is that nothing comes in those caves. You don't have to worry about Drachnids while hunting the Yeti caves.

I use fire pet since the DS seems to cut through the yetis quick. Pull with Malaise then I sick the pet on (note: focus item pet with Burnout, Coldstone for AC and double wielding Sword of Runes). I then cast two - three Blazes to drop him. I tried Cinder Bolt but cast time and mana use doesn't seem as efficient as Blaze. Using these tactics I can usually kill a Yeti with 2 bubbles of mana (188 Int) and pet down to ~70-80%. Then it's just a quick med until the next pull.

The only danger is from wandering Yeti's. If they agro on you while you're fighting another you may be in trouble. Best bet is to face him and take the hits and hope your pet can finish the first before you get killed. I've found that Greater Shielding and Pantom Chain are musts in this eventuality. I also keep an eye out for other Yeti's during the fight and if I see another rounding a corner while my pet is engaged I'll gate out if it's early early in the fight. If the first Yeti is near death I'll take the hits from the second until pet finishes the first.

Appendum on the "wanderer"
# Sep 07 2001 at 4:15 PM Rating: Default
As I said in my original post, the only real danger in the northern caves is the Yeti that spawns and then wanders around. If he happens to wander into you while you're engaged with another yeti you may be in trouble.

This is what I've been able to figure out about him and have been able to go an entire level using these tactics to avoid him from interfering during a fight.

If no one has been camping the northern caves, it's likely the wanderer will be the first yeti you see. He doesn't sit in any alcove but is south of the intersection and appears to be trying to walk into the wall (pathing problem?). He spawns every 16min 30s and will appear in any yeti spawn spot not currently occupied.

My tactic is to get into the cave and kill the wanderer since he's the first I see. I then start a watch and kill the other yetis until 13 min. I then med up, and sit south of the intersection until he spawns at 16min 30s. It's just a matter of waiting a few seconds until he appears and I kill him again.

Usingthese tactics I've been able to solo in the northern caves with almost zero risk of dieing.

Good Luck,

Another good thing

Additional info: The yeti's can not see through invis. A big plus when/if you need to make a corpse run into the middle of the caves.

Could a 36 necro solo these without too much trouble? Or even 2 at once if I ran into the wanderer? Any input I could get would be great. I am looking for a new hunting place after I get bored of the OT.

As a 35 magician I can take one of these guys down using a summoned animal as a pet. The key is to pull with the 16th level dd spell and pull it to your pet. I haven't tried with a water pet but the root from earth even after a malise seldom sticks. Med for a sec and heal your pet. do this 3 times and then hit it with the 34th level dd and it is either dead or near death. Yeti cave spawn times are 17 minutes and a walker goes from room to room.

These things are realy weak , they hit for reasonable damage (double for under 80's) but i can kill one with 600dd and pet at lvl 39 easy. they give sweeet xp when youre soloing 3 for one mana bar 8)
level range much greater

yetis from green over blue to the
rare even con at lvl 45! yes even con.
but the 45 yeti sucks as well as the others
only hit about 80 and goes down really
ONLY even con i ever can dare to solo as
being a monk.
btw. yes they drop essence of winter.
but i think its vendor sold also in firiona vie!
You are conning the wrong Yeti's
# Jun 20 2001 at 4:35 AM Rating: Default
In the caves on the zone walls, Yeti's are from level 31 to level 35. They are Tundra Yeti's.

In a cave in the centre, they are Glavier Yeti's and they are a higher level.
Essense of Winter
# Nov 22 2000 at 9:03 PM Rating: Decent
These now drop as super Rare loot Essense of Winter. I have killed about 20 of these and have gotten 1 Essense of Winter.

Essense of Winter is needed to make the Temper for Barbarian Smithing. Used to drop only from Ice Giants in Everfrost and Permafrost.

Temper requires 2 Essense of Winter, 1 Brandy and 1 Ice Goblin Blood.

Umm I have some of these from hunting Yeties in DL, and I was wondering the value. How much can I auction them for?
RE: Essense of Winter
# Feb 15 2002 at 9:37 AM Rating: Decent
Depends on how much the person is willing to pay, I use to make Northman's Armour, and many people would be more then willing to trade them for an ATM ,I would pay a few pp for them sometimes if I had the money.(I have a full set and I've made many other pieces this way) You can try auctioning them but you'll probably have poor luck. Since it's not an item most people need.

Shamans get some nice pets starting at level 34, and get new pets at levels 39 44 49, and i think they get one at 55 also but dont take my word for it. our pets are great tanks for us shamans with buffs out the ***** they can deal alot of damage.

Just some info for ya.
