The one I ran in to was a Koalindl (capital K) and was red to me at 11 and hit for 454. OUCH.. there was still a lvl 1 in the pool also but this bugger is MEAN.
a good way to kill these things when you become KOS with them is to swim up to the ramp so you are just above water but not standing on the ramp, the fish will come up and attack you there and you will be out of range from the other NPCs that love to assist the fishies, plus you can camp there and you dont have to worry about running out of breath.
also a level 2 rogue has been killing them quite easily, and if he ever dies in there he can try to sneak back in or i can reroll him, but since rogues get sneak i might be able to slip past the guards.
It's been over a year and a half since my mule got his throat slit for 450 damage, but there is one piece of evidence that I remember well. One of the guys near the pond even explains that 'Sometimes Rodcet Nife comes down to Norrath in the form of on of our fish.' or something along those lines. Sure, I was surprised when I died, but that just made it make sense for once why that npc would even bother talking to me.
What I think you encountered was this. Whenever someone kills a Koalindl, if there are any other Koalindls in the pond at the same time then one of them will become Rodcet Nife in disguise.
This is to prevent mass farming of the Koalindls by people doing the Stein of Moggok quest, I believe.

This fish is level one guys, not red to even a level one character. After killing 3 times, it makes you immediately KOS to all Qeynos NPC's. Everytime you kill it, the only thing you see is "Rodcet Nife is not pleased", which is Temple of Life. Some of the posts here are, let's say, a bit far out there.......
Which posts do you think are "out there?" The Koalindl does indeed sometimes spawn as a high level version of Rodcet Nife. It wiped out my level 1 SK mule, and conned red to my level 35 Enchanter. I suspect it's level 60-plus, and so far as I know, no one has ever killed a Koalindl in its Rodcet Nife form.
Incidentally, my newly created SK had only killed two fish (both empty) when the Rodcet Nife version spawned. I camped and came back an hour or so later. The usual green level version was up, and I killed that version of the fish without problem.
I have killed the fish dozens of times, at first with mules untill they where KOS but more recently with a lvl 13 half-elf bard that I decided to get rid of anyway. The mules where always lvl 2 SK's and would at times be a tough fight (although the fish never managed to kill me). However when using the bard within the past 2 weeks I noticed that the faction hits were not quite as extreem. each time I tried to do my Stein quest recently it would take 2-3 kills to get the fish drop. Yet even after my third succesfull Stein run my Bard was able to walk out of Queynos with a dubious BUT NOT KOS faction to the guards. To make it even more peculiar the bard I used started off in Freeport and had never been to Queynos before.
Of all the times I've done this quest there has never been a red con in that water, NEVER!!! It's not even listed in the Bestiary and there are some pretty damn rare mobs listed here. So in my opinion, I wouldn't even worry about the god fish. You should always get the fish drop within three kills and then you can just log your mule or let it drown or get killed by Lanclot The Inhuman!!!
Besides why on Earth would you have your lvl 35 Enchanter killing the fish in the first place? All your doing is putting a serious limit on how many times you will ever be able to get a Stein for yourself.
I need to raise faction with Brother Hayle in Paw jails. I'm told that turning the fish raises faction with him and Temple of Life so I can do Soulfire. Does the mule thing work for that?

The rare god fish that spawns is just that, rare. It is 50+, hits for 450+, and is spawned after killing a lot of the level 1 fish. Upon spawn it stays up for about an hour. Would be fun to raid but time and gaurds might be a factor.
Was just goofing off and checking my tracking tonight and noticed a very red to me Koalindl fish. Went to check it out and sure enough, conned red and was the only fish in the pool. I hope this was just a bug, otherwise the Stein quest just got a whole lot harder :D
Sometimes the Prime Healer himself hides as a koalindl. He hits between 150 and 450, making quick work of the unsuspecting. Have not noticed him to be triggered by a quest, but only by killing the little fishy alot. (Has spawned on me twice while trying to get Blood Sabre faction.)
Aye - A friend created a lvl 1 warrior to kill Koalindl so I could loot with my main - all were fine until a very red one spawned. The koalindl double-tapped my friend for 450 dmg. We got a message saying something to the extent of "....how dare we attack the Prime Healer as he swims amongst the koalindl...". I believe it is Rodcet Nife in rare form. After we had killed and looted around a dozen fish, it spawned. He went away after about an hour. If it didn't completely tear my faction up, I would be inclined to get some groups together and see what he has :)
IF you need a fish, try doing the regurgatonic quest from Ak'anon and get the fish from Frostbite in WK... If you have a porter to help you out it goes quick, otherwise (if you're doing the Stien quest) just peicemeal the quest. The first time I did the Stien quest I ran the entire thing, took 4 hours to do.
If you're an enchanter you'll have to goto Erud anyways to get your higher level illusions, so just pick up the peices as you go. Have an alt in the FP area? Kill bixies as you run by (also kill ork pawns, since you get nothing but good faction from them) for the honey combs. The quest still takes forever and a day to do, but if you peicemeal it it doesn't seem to.
Eeek I have an alarming observation, haven't had a chance to get my other chars out to confirm it, but I noted that my wizard (high elf, hadn't done anything to or for the Priests of Life) had a DUBIOUS faction after I had a mule kill two fish.
This was the same faction my monk, who started at indifferent, had after the same actions. Likewise, the guards were now apprehensive to the wizard.
I am very worried that this means the time honored tactics mentioned are now defunct
I do not doubt that this may have happened, but if it did it was a bug. If all factions are shared those who play characters of opposing factions/dieties are in trouble. I mean if you had a DE shadow knight and a HE paladin and did quests there would be tremendous trouble. Just my 2cp
I just make a human wizard ( I pick wizard because humans have trouble seeing so having a spell to cast helps in locating the fish, also the wizards lvl 1 spell is the fastest)..raise him to lvl 2. The paladin in the water is in the upper left corner, so goto the lower right corner and auto target a fish, the paladin will not chase you from this spot, nor will the people up on top attack you. Nuke thie fish, usually three will be enough then use /q..Log in your enchanter and loot the fish, no one attacks you, no faction hit, quest complete no deaths.
i have done the Band of Rocet Nife quest my self, i am a paladin of the rocet nife and has great faction with Rocet Nife, all you do is to Kill the Konaldil once give it to Enoc and you resive a pretty nice Necklace with Effect of Healing, you get faction back when you turn in the fish so dont worry, then you kill another and turn it in and you resive the Band of Rocet Nife... just don't let Enoc spot you killin it... you better run to zone..
