Thanks to all the other posts for this correction. Maybe it should be added he might be in either zone depending on era. He was in Jail cells for me today. This was my 1st time doing this quest so spent 45 minutes waiting for a spawn in SK while reading through various posts to figure out where he was.

I believe certain NPC's were moved out of Infected Paw when it was revamped during LDoN. Brother Hayle is one of those. I have adjusted this npc entry era tag to LDoN.
Just handed in my hilt etc and got the Soulfire.. on Aradune he is in last cell in splitpaw.. levers open the cells but they will close after a bit so be sure to have a gate potion ready in case you trapped

He's on the Priests of Life faction, which you can easily raise by handing in a ton of Bone Chips to Lashun Novashine in North Qeynos - https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=574. You can buy endless amounts of Bone Chips from certain modern vendors, such as the gnome lady Marie Fay in Brell's Rest. Turning in about 3000 (30 stacks; you can hand in stacks of 100 at a time now) took me from apprehensive to ally.
South Karana, surrounded by 4 "a gnoll guard". These gnolls look like they use the same graphic as the blackburrow gnolls. Located northwest of Paw entrance, at about /loc -1511, 2257, 5.
The bandit camps are all over West Karana (and thank Golly I have my Holy Steed). Farmed and turned in 82 sashes to Chesgard Sydwen (took about two hours); now Allied with him, all of Qeynos, Brother Hayle and the Priests of Life. Yay me!
Ok the location of the raiders that drop the sashes and respawn quick are at loc: -4080, -1942, -60 Located in North Karana southeast of the druid circle on the shoreline.
The spawn rate is very high here, by the time I got done with the last one of the six(mind you one or two hits at 51st Pally) the first one had alrdy respawned. Getting average one sash per 8 of em killed. (8 spawn here)
Faction: Karana Bandits got worse Karana Residents got better Guards of Qeynos got better Guards of Highpass got better Circle of Unseen Hands got better
The sashes are what will give you the faction raise for Priests of Life.
The trick to enter and exit the cell is to jump thru the bars. Right side on the way in and right side on the way out. Im a high elf pally and had no problems jumping thru. I read all yours posts and still couldnt find the stupid handle. So I jumped and it worked first time. Took me about 5 tries to get out cause I was jumping in the middle and left. First time I tried the gap on the right side it worked. Hope this works for you as well.
I gave Novashine tons of GP and I was climbing the ranks from apprehensive to amiably. After about 1000GP (I was bored and had time to kill) Novashine is regarding me as "--". What the heck does this mean!? Can I still finish the Soulfire quest or am I out of luck?
A 65 lvl monk guildie and I taged teamed Sir Lucan till about 4 % then i zoned keeping my facton in freeport when he said Lucan was dead i ran in and looted all iteams. i have not found this to hurt my quest as of yet ill keep you informed
i gave brother hayle the note to get the parts of the soulfire info from him and he gave me back a note and told me that my faction wasnt high enough or go away basically and now i dont have the note the clerk gave me but a diffrent one to alisya or whatever what now?
There's a very simple trick to getting out of his cell if you're locked in it. Since you cannot target a gnoll outside to tag, just use Flash of Light on Brother Hayle. As long as you're high enough level, you can then just train the zoneline trailing 30 gnolls and Brother Hayle behind you. Don't kill him and no faction hit.
Err,because all you"helpful"people post all these little tricks they are of course nerfed. You CANNOT pull/blind mob a thru the door and they will open it.... they run thru the closed door, and as far as faction goes you only need warmly to do this quest as I have done it several times and never was my faction above warmly to Brother Hayle. Just a heads up to all those thinking they can get out of cell without gate pots or a porter. =D
There is a very easy way to get through any of the locked doors in splitpaw (and there are more than just what are at the jail). What you can do is either pull a gnoll on the other side of the gate that you want to go and have him open it, or in the case of brother hale, fear / intimidate one of the two gnolls in the jail or brother hale himself so that he runs out of the cell opening the door as he runs. :-) I use this all the time in splitpaw to get through the locked doors that are even unpickable / untargetable / unopenable.
Just thought I'd share my two cents worth. Had a cleric friend who had the hilt on him from Xicotl (I spent forever camping him over a few days)...so we decided to try multi-questing it...we both worked with faction till it was Kindly. I initiated the quest with hayle by giving him bank note, then he gave me back another note and stated I needed the 4 items. At that time my cleric friend handed Brother Hayle the hilt, then I handed in each of the 3 remaining pieces I had one at a time and he gave me the Soulfire! WOOT. Anyways just thought I would pass on info about faction and that this can be multi-quested as I didnt see any mention of multi-questing this at all.
Ok. thanks for that info but how in Quellious' name did you get past the jail doors? I am trying to to soulfire quest also but the jail gate won't open. I have killed all the gnolls in that area thinking there is a key but nothinng... there are two hooks hanging but no levers or buttons that I can see. I need to get the door open so I can reach Brother Hayle. I am so frustrated right now that I am almost ready to give up. sigh. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Also once the doors close and lock on you can you be ported out? Thanks. Issann Aradia.
there are levers on the outside of each door, first one is on the right. i took a druid with me, and he ported us out after we did the turn in. brother hayle will tell you (too late) that the doors close and lock after you get in. so, either a druid or mage or? for porting out, or a couple of friends to stand outside and re-open doors. (two doors to open to get to Hayle)
I turned in, my 3 items after the note to hayle, and then all he said is this matter is too important 3 times.. what do I do now.. He took all the items.. can I go get the note again and try, cause he already has all my items?
The Zimel's Blades script calls for the questor to visit Bro. Hayle, deep in the Infected Paw (Split Paw Lair) jail **twice**.
The first hand-in is the "Note to Bro. Hayle", obtained by giving the "H.K. 102" key to the High Keep Bank Clerk. Bro. Hayle will take the "Note", and read out a shopping list of items that are required to obtain Soulfire.
The second hand-in, consisting of The Brilliant Sword of Faith (obtained by killing Sir Lucan D'Lere, and returning his Testimony of Truth to Valeron Dushire in the Hall of Truth), your Testimony of Truth (obtained by killing Guard Willia in NFP, and returning her Token of Truth to Merko, in the Hall of Truth) and the Glowing Sword Hilt (obtained by killing Xicotl in Castle Mistmoore), is scripted to happen on a later visit.
If you're not following the Zimel's Blades script line-for-line, you can do both hand-ins during a single visit.
In my experience, I handed Bro. Hayle four items: the Note to Bro. Hayle, my Testimony of Truth, my Brilliant Sword of Faith and my Glowing Sword Hilt.
Bro. Hayle took my quest items, looked them over, then handed back the "Note to Bro. Hayle." He didn't give me the flaming sword!! I wasn't expecting that!! To this day, I wonder how I didn't wake every Gnoll in the Lair with my throaty bark of dismay.
In desperation, I shoved the "Note" back into Bro. Hayle's hand, insisting that there must have been some kind of mistake, for I had just handed him all of the required items.
Without a word, he pocketed the note, turned his back for a heartbeat, then spun around and thrust Soulfire into my hands! WOOT!
The reason I've posted this information is twofold. The first is to prevent anyone else from feeling the cold panic that I felt when I handed my hard-won quest items to Bro. Hayle, and received only a scrap of paper in return.
The second reason? Preventing others from doing what a close friend, a fellow guild officer, did with "Note" when Bro. Hayle handed it back to him: my poor guildie destroyed it, instead of handing it back.
Since Bro. Hayle retained my friend's other quest items, we're contemplating ways to jog Bro. Hayle's memory. I'm sure that unused Brilliant Sword of Faith, Testimony and Glowing Sword hilt are crowding his cell ;->
We're going to sneak back into West Freeport, give Zimel another blanket, some more bog juice and some more edible goo, then present the H.K. 102 note to the High Keep bank clerk to obtain another "Note to Bro. Hayle." We'll take the note to Bro. Hayle, and see if he remembers my friend. Hopefully Bro. Hayle will simply accept the note in exchange for Soulfire.
Otherwise...it's off to West Freeport and Mistmoore. Again. Blechhhhh.
Seeq Endestroi Order of Irreverent Souls' Epic Master
Well after hours and hours of myself and my pally friend trying to get his soulfire for him we go up to Brother Hayle and find that my friend is aprehansive to Mr Hayle. So we do some of the quests to get the faction. (hand in bone chips to novashine in Qeyons and some others) They are ALL WORTHLESS.. for hours on end we did theese dumb quests and so hardly any improvement.
I looked up one quest that i never saw the bandit sash quest. You can kill either bandints or the raiders to recive the sashes and hand them into Chesguard Sydwen in South Qeynos. The best spot i saw was in West Karana there is mulitple Bandint camps around the Ogre camp area. We collected sashes for about a hour to fill up our invtentory (about 40 or so) Went from Indiffernt to Ally in 1 hour. Definatley by far the best quest to raise your faction with this fool. The others a WORTHLESS =)
By the way, NK in that corner of the bank between the two zone out bridges, there are about 7 raiders that repop within 3 minutes of being killed, and bandit sashes are easy i got 60 in half hour. hope it helps
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you YOU ARE GREAT!!! I have been on the web for a hour trying to find ways to raise faction with the bugger. Lacton Goodspirit Zeberox
There are switches on the wall. Just look around and they look like little torch holders or something. Just click on them and they open the cells. We first did it by casting a spell on one of the gnolls in the cell, and he came running and opened it, but then the pally got locked inside, so we were searching around for a bit, finally found it.
What faction is this guy?? Is he sided with Knights of Truth or Freeport Malitia?? Because my faction sux with FP amlitia but rocks with Knights of truth. Oh and by the way, is it impossible to turn your faction around after you kill Sir Lucan Dlere?
From what I understand killing lucan isnt the end of your faction in Freeport but the truth is raising it without enraging people that help you get the soulfire is tricky. I havent found any ways to raise faction without enraging the good guys but you are better off leaving it be. Freeport isnt that great of a town anyway and if you need to get around use the sewers. As I have found out twice now is that you need to have Ally faction with the Knights of Truth and at least warmly with the guards of Qeynos. Don't think that Kindly is good enough nor Warmly. The easiest faction builder is to either make a mule monk or shadowknight and have them kill the fish in the pool at the Temple of Truth in Qeynos. Then you can loot the corpse and deliver the Koalindi corpse to Guardian in the pool. Keep doing this until you reach Ally faction. You may need to make a couple of different "mules" to reach Ally for the will become KoS rather quickly.
