I was pulling a faerie guard away from the camp to kill and was plenty far enough to avoid additional faerie agro, but Gearheart has incredible bionic peepers and saw/assisted from a very long way away. Exercise caution! He also gave a -100 Faerie faction hit when killed, a sizable faction dent compared to the -1 from killing actual faeries.

One of the good things about this quest, if your interested, is it raises faction with the Merchants of Ak'Anon. Not only will the guards like you, but so will the merhcants! Just a little side benefit.
Hehe level 29 ruid here and i smoked gear heart... he hits hard but he didint shrug any of my spells... thats all that would have saved him is if he got shrugs off.. But he didnt and he dropped like a fly.. So mabye he was downgraded?? woh knows..
I wouldn't say that Gearheart isn't a problem, probably not for most, but for me he was. Back in the day I hunted faries/pixes & Cognoggin for quite some time. Obviously I have bad faction with them & Gearheart shares that faction.
I was out in LF watching some higher lvls clear out the town & uninvised without thinking about him. He was blue to me, agro'd, long story short. Just so you know, he could pose a problem.
With the corruption of the forest and the faerie camp there is no need to worry about this thing. He just stands there as you kill the undead sprites that inhabit the camp now. What makes gathering dust so dangerous now is Equestrielle the Corrupt. She appears, runs through places, and vanishes. I had a run in with the tombstone version (I am 37). Later I saw her run thru the camp and stop a little from it. She stood there for several seconds and vanished.
ok I confirmed it for myself. lol Here is the scoop. He does give you a faerie faction hit. Some one mentioned that he does not but he does. I only killed him twice. Got a box wt 10.0 no drop and a rusty sword both times oh and a faerie faction hit.
btw Killed enough faeries to loot 36 faerie dust in less than an hour. At 41st season of training this was like stealing plains pebbles from a kobold. They never swarmed or agroed on me. My faction did go from indifferent to threatingly. *mourns the loss of those wonderful creatures* not exactly sure why noble rangers and paladins should have to kill or support the killing of such beautiful things but they had what I needed and for the greater cause of good they have sacrificed their lives.
As for gearheart... pretty much a waste of time to kill him for dust. You can take out 5 faeries before taking him out.
Best of luck to all ye questors. If you need any help, feel free to ask.

Be Very careful with this guy, I made the mistake of underestimating him, and he nearly killed me (gated with about 30 hp's left). Also, he runs almost as fast as sow, I was running to GFay (I didn't know MM was as close as it was) and sow ran out about 1/2-way there, he caught up to me and started beating the snot out of me.
Gearheart drops a Blackbox which is for a Warrior quest in Ak Anon. You get the quest at about lvl 10. Do not try it until you are lvl 20 with a group, or higher than that solo. You will pull one of the guards, and maybe the princess if she is up. Why they give this quest at such a low level is a mystery, but be warned, this is not a low level quest.
I was soloing this area around 29th, and that guy is nasty. He will resist snares and roots up the ying yang. Make sure you have him charmed/harmonied/lulled or whatever before trying to pull gaurds.
This guy has a HUGE MR. As an Enchanter, I have Tashani, fortunately, but even still he will resist 60% of my spells (at 28). He also has the largest aggro range of anything I've ever seen in this game. You could attack a fairie over by the entrance to Mistmoore and he'll come running! (a slight exaggeration, but you get the point, I'm sure)
I am not sure he has such a high magic resist. I killed him a couple of times because he was interfering with my fairy dust gathering for my darkforge quest. Definitely remember getting heat blood to stick on him, and maybe darkness. Annoying little puke, though.
