Having done this quest this morning (Traitor to the Validus Custodus) I can confirm that if you outdamage the guards then Vahn's corpse will not poof allowing you to loot this dagger.
I've done this quest a couple of times and the dagger can be looted from Vahn's corpse. First time I done the quest his corpse did not vanish, not sure if I out-damaged the guards or got the killing blow or both, but I looted this dagger and a Superior Combine Dagger as well. Second time he did vanish on death, so disarm would be the way to go if you have the skill. If not, try the out-damage / kill-shot route.
With LDoN can we now augment this item to make it become Magic? I could see adding damage, DD, or a lifetap proc on this to make it quite more usefull.
well I would wan't it. I currently have a blood-point in my main hand (10 21), it does a nice job holding taunt, but I would think this dagger would be better. Anyway, it was offered for sale at 200pp, so im happy to have a weapon that is this blazingly fast for such a reasonable sum. Even if the damage isnt uber, I think the delay on this with max haste will hit the minimum delay, and with my damage bonus I should be keeping a mobs attention... ill check back after I have had a chance to try it.
If I loose taunt, I can always go back to my bloodpoint. At 55, the group basically expects me to hold taunt period. We have monks, rogues, rangers, and casters who can do the majority fo the damage. The groups where im expected to do a majority of the damage, I can always switch the bloodpoint back in :)
I wouldnt sneer at a 16 delay. That is almost 25% faster than my bloodpoint. If it helps me with taunt ill take it!
FYI, there is no minimum delay and if there ever was one its long been removed. Here is what you can do to test it. Get a chanter and a cheap haste item like an FBSS and equip him with this dagger without the belt first, cast Wondrous Rapidity on yourself and go find a lv 20ish greenie (something that wont die quickly) and start poking away. Turn on hits and misses and get a feel for how often you are swinging (your effective delay should be 9.41). Then while you are poking away swap in the FBSS and you will see a noticable increase in the swing speed. With an FBSS and WR your haste is 91% and effective delay is now 8.37. If there was a minimum delay like the mythical 11-12 number I hear then you would not see a change in speed when equiping the FBSS. Since it was an obvious change to me (it really felt like i was getting almost 2 swings in per second) then there appears to be no minimum delay...or else its less than 8.37. But i can guarantee than i was swinging FAR more often than once every second.
I found this on a POK merchant for 122p and bought it in a second. Quick PC on it and i got an offer immeditately to buy it for 1k. I'm gonna use it for PLing and practicing piercing skills on toons that need some work on it.
This dagger is non-magic, meaning its usefulness is greatly limited for most situations. Against regular non-magic mobs, sure, it'd be good for a warrior to help hold taunt.
Most mobs aren;t magic. Reaver is 40/40 and not magic. Pallies who use it say they rarely have to switch it out. Unless your killing higher level undead stuff, certain golems, or sirens you don't need magic weapons. Be nicer if it was magic, but not a serious problem that it isn't.
This dagger wasn't actually meant to be attained, I think. I got it while doing the quest in Katta for a 5 charge invis mask, and my group outdamaged a bunch of guards on a traitor who was supposed to be arrested . . . this was looted off the body. The rogue was wielding it, which meant his melee was EXTREMELY fast.
As a 19 Rogue you would not have a 9 damage bonus, damage bonus is based entirely on the level of the person using the weapon (for one handers) or the level of the person using it and the delay (for 2 handers)

I could see a use for this, if one were to use it for interrupting casters....extremely low delay, best I have now is Locustlure 8/17, or Tombcarver 5/17. So at the very least, this is a good piercer for the lower level Rogue, or for the more experienced Rogue looking to "interrupt"!
in my expereince its *extremely* hard to interrupt high level mobs with melee damage alone and no rogue in there right mind would sacrafice damage output for interuptions.
its more likely to be used on a warrior to hold aggro more effectivly.
There is one good use for very fast weapons that are otherwise lame: raising your melee skill with that type weapon faster. The Shovel for 2hb is a good example.
