After zoning into The Steppes, using the necklace, I just got aggro from a couple of earth elementals without moving an inch from where I ported in. So I take it that this still needs another fix perhaps.

Yep, and even now in 2012, tis still a potential port and die event, but this may be more due to pathing than spawn area. I've used the port a half dozen times in the past week and bombed my attackers upon zone in twice. The other times, I had plenty of time to invis and move on.

Has this been patched yet or does it still blow to zone in using this?

For the time it takes to get a gate item it is worthless unless you cast the item and have a group member cast invis on you after you cast gate. 13K HP lev 75 cleric with 3200 ac and 14K mana and I cant use it cause before I finish zoning I am dead from the level 67 mobs (elementals)who aggro and kill me. Even if you survive the 3 minutes it takes to zone in you will die trying to run away getting rooted. Very disappointing zone in location. Either they should change the zone in location or move the mobs away from it. Otherwise just use the Goru'kar Mesa sandstone from guild hall and spend the 5 minutes to run across one zone...much faster than a cr and rez from this gate neck piece.
A couple days for the quest...5 seconds do destroy the gate piece. And don't waste another inventory slot on Small portal fragments anymore.

hey all =))
this ITEM says Required lvl is 53 =)) but at 55 you cant get the quest, so this might be right on 1 or 2 servers, that dont have NO DROP/TRADE, but for the rest of us its more then 53 =))
will try and se if i can get it at each lvl up from now to the lvl 60 it says in the QUEST here it takes for me to be ablet o get it =))

ok something came up* and i ended up beeing 65 before i was looking into this again =)) so i cant answer what i set out to do sorry about that =))
about the portin "problem" i can only say two things :
1. im not sure if we are to take the "war" in warportal as in: when you port in to this portal, you will get in war, if you arent lucky.
i have on an average zoned in 4 out of 7 times WITHOUT agro and if i get agro it has only been from 1 mob and i take it up the hill abit where no other mob comes and root it and kill it that has been on tanelor =)) on one occation i have left it rooted and ran to zone in ( im on my second stack of portal fragments atleast now =))
2. is there a possibility that there at some point, say, when the warportal is at 100% and there spawns that red mob ppl talk about. that if someone kill it, that it will then "finsih the quest for the server", for now having a restored portal, and that will then make the mobs leave =)) ?
some ppl says that to open the normal The Nest zone on a server, its needed for someone to kill a specific mob or do a specific quest, and not untill that is done, can anyone zone into the regular nest zone , but i dont know if that is roumor or real deal =)) so this might be the same here if the nest thing is hte real deal =)) ?
this is just sugestions nothing that answers anything, but i thought it might be worth posthing here anyways =))
* : i found out that charming a pet in veksar as necro at lvl 55 was good for XP so now i am lvl 65 and 20 aa hehe =))

The Warportal is a repeatable event. It won't be beaten for good ever.
As part of DoN progression The Nest had to be unlocked. Once this was done on a server it was unlocked for everyone. This was a one time event.
The mechanism they used for unlocking The Nest may be used again in the future, but it isn't used with the War Portal.
Generally speaking, Everquest tends to shy away from once only events.

The port in location is not safe. Just an FYI to all the non FD classes out there. Also, the mobs at the port in cast root, so don't think you'll just be able to run away, either.

I agree this is very disappointing to be ported into a KOS Area. SOE you disappoint me again
gotta love this item, easy quest too.
