SK's out Tank Everybody. :-)

Actually, believe it or not, monks have higher damage avoidance mitigation and a properly equiped monk can tank better than any class in the game. Also, Rogues are only masters of damage behind enemies, that's not "toe-to-toe" meleeing. Ranger's can't compete either, sure with some AA's but that's not "toe-to-toe" meleeing either, cause he'll be snaring the Monk and he'll just bow him to death, that is unless the Monk whoops him so bad he can't get off a snare, or.. he has such high resists he can't cast, otherwise they couldn't touch a Monk. And as for Rogues, all a monk would have to do is run past the rogue from the front, to a distance, about 5 feet away, turn around, and run back at him, he'd never get a BS off, he'd be eatin' alive by triple attack.

Dont be foolish, all being equal an SK,Pali,or War will always tank better then a monk. Monk is the best class in the game imho, but monks cannot tank as well as any of the 3 mentioned above...again all things being equal. Of course a monk geared in planar can tank better then an sk geared in velious class armor.

You need to look at the date on that post. Back in 2003, prior to the monk mitigation nerf, monks really COULD tank just about anything. Guilds were even using monks to tank PoP progression mobs, which is when Sony decided they needed nerfing.
RE: Bah
# Mar 08 2003 at 10:42 AM Rating: Default
I tend to agree with that. I have tanked in groups before. There may be some mobs I can't take, but with the right healer there a monk can't tank if need be.
# Jul 05 2002 at 2:44 AM Rating: Default
you THINK you know how to FD when a lower lvl *im sure i am* knows to turn auto atk off before trying.. never fails.. in group.. at mob's feet.. thank you drive thru~

Monks of the Wizards of Melee guys.. We dish out the most toe to toe melee damage, but like a wizard.. if we get beat on.. we die quickly..

AC is nice, and it helps but id rather have the extra 100 hp from the Spirit of Ox.. and you can buff other people

RE: Wizards of
# Sep 20 2002 at 3:49 AM Rating: Default
to start with... monks aren't masters of melee damage. thats the rogue's job and rangers are right up there with monks.

i agree that 100 additional hps will help a monk take a beating and stay alive longer. every hp helps and the effect on these legs is quite useful in some situations. but please don't run around in a full set of thurg armor spreading the notion that a monk can't tank. get yourself some items with half decent AC.

monks have better defensive skills than any other melee. hitting the AC soft cap is very feasible. at 56 i'm at 1200 AC and 4k hps raid buffed; and my gear still needs ALOT of work.

have a close look at your equipment. if you feel as fragile as a wizard or think that the phrase 'paper tank' just might apply to you, then the chipped velium amulet and crescent armor has got to go !
RE: Wizards of
# Aug 30 2004 at 8:11 AM Rating: Default
Face to face a monk will kick any mele's rear end and with high enough resists there isnt a class in the game that they cant beat.
# Apr 15 2002 at 3:34 PM Rating: Decent
These legs are great..

The ac is low but if your in any group with your time your tanks should be taunting off the mobs.

Heh you have played your monk well then
# Jan 15 2002 at 12:37 AM Rating: Excellent
Half the challenge of playing a monk is keeping the aggro off yourself and on the main tank. Its easy to get aggro anyone can do that. But to keep it off you and on the main tank while still doing max dmg without FD ing thats what needs to happen. I will be the first to say that i suck at it also because it is hard, but its also your responsiblity to avoid the aggro to make sure the main tank and cleric have an easier time of it.

#REDACTED, Posted: Jan 14 2002 at 11:02 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well from a few post i saw were rather pathetic. The part about monks shouldn't tank for main. Well tell ya what...if your monk doesn't get agro during a fight...delete it. Obviously you have no clue as to the power of a monk. Why make a warrior when one 2-3 lvl's above me falls before my fist. Most warriors can't taunt off me once i get agro in the grp...cleric just changes target on healing b/c he knows.

A monks role is to do as much damage as possible while avoiding getting hit. They are not main tanks. Period. Why? It wastes cleric mana.

Simple math. For the same mana, the cleric can complete heal YOU and your ~2k hps, or can CH the warrior who likely has over 3k hps (and over 4k if heavily buffed) by lvl 54.

This is never more apparent than when mobs start doubling in the 200's. Cleric would blow all his mana complete healing your uber *** 4 times, when he'd only have to CH a tanking warrior twice.
RE: SIlly People
# May 12 2002 at 10:42 PM Rating: Excellent
In an ideal world a warrior tanks. However there are a lot of times when you are in a group without a warrior or he is significantly lower then the monk. Which means it would be very difficult for a dammage dealing monk to drop agro for the warrior to hold.

Monks are not ideal tanks but can do the job. They hold agro well and when properly equiped have great AC. Plus if a cleric is late on CH (Which NEVER happens to anyone I am sure) a monk can FD instead of dying.

As a monk I try to get as many AC/HP items I can get my hands on. Thre are many times I have had to step in as MT. I have tanked a lot of stuff including giants in Kael Arena. Not cause I wanted to, but because that was the group chance handed to us on those occasions.

I would be more then happy to let a war be main tank but I would not be willing to give up my camp just cause we dont have a warrior in the group. Period!

# Jan 09 2002 at 6:57 AM Rating: Decent
Not really. I would take these over my crescent pants any day. They are actually 7 1/2 AC (3 agi = 1 ac I think), the 5 sta, +30 hp and the 2svall actually pretty nice not to mention the effect (nice sta buff..more HP :). But then again, I would definetly take, say, oiled greaves over these in a heart beat and just use these legs for the effect. But all in all, not a bad pair of legs.

Full Grand Master suit of armour

guys, right quick did calculations for the full set of gm. Here are the raw numbers:

ac58 hp160 sr42 dx8 sa13 ag22 ch0

m11 f11 p11 c11 d11 wt1.1

Now assuming that raw ac and ag translate up higher that makes

ac@1.5 = 87 @2.0 = 116

ag@1.5 = 33 @2.0 = 44

The other stats I think are direct transfers and don't need modifiers the full suit is nice at wt 1.1 however for a full suit the resists suck, for a full suit the ac sucks, for a full suit for a MONK theres not a lot of DEX, AGI, STR, AC. This i think is shameful since these stats are the same as the planar armour from POG. Notice that all this gear is magical and not just cloth. Which means it is supposed to have a magical dweomer. For a magical dweomer from a planar stand point it's pathetic. I agree with each of you that there are much better items and it would seem that whoever made this eq was actually going back to prekunark standards for monk. Remember the sashes and headbands? Shocking. Feel free to correct any of the math. It's still quite pathetic.

PoG drops Silvery moon armor for monks that is exactly the same as these.
Um...about AC.
# Feb 28 2001 at 6:19 PM Rating: Decent
Heh, guys, the AC represented on items is the BASE AC, you will NEVER go up JUST the ac listed on a item, depending on class, you will get 2x as much, if a war it's 2.5x I believe, I'm not sure for monk or any other class, but I know it's always more than listed. So, if you have something thats 10ac, equip it (taking into consideration what you removed) and see how much your AC went up, that's your AC multiplyer :) good luck getting these.

RE: Um...about AC.
# Mar 14 2001 at 11:16 AM Rating: Default
At level 52, these give me +10 AC. Spirit of the Ox is a +23 STA buff that gives ~ 100 hit points.

RE: Ac... lol
# Jan 15 2001 at 9:37 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, but you know we can't take AC at face value.
With our natural AC bonus, and with the 5agi, i'm guessing that the visable AC from these legs will be around AC15 or more.
Take a look at the Cresent Legs. AC3? but when i equip them, my AC increases 7or9 (sorry, exact number escapes me)
So, before we all freak out.. get them, put them on, then see what the REAL AC is. PLUS 30HP, gotta love that.

RE: Ac... lol
# Mar 15 2001 at 1:14 AM Rating: Default
Well, it appears someone hasnt played a monk before..
What other class can wear basicly cloth type armor with BUGGER ALL weight and still have at least the same if not more ac than a warrior in "the new warrior quest armor".

My munk at 47 (no defence increases as of yet) has 901 ac UNBUFFED. Im an iksar and have average gear, aimed towards AC and HP mainly.
Put this gear on a Warrior and see if it comes close. I dont think so.

These legs rock, its one of the few of this line of quests I will be doing.
yes.. but that is the point..

curious.. how much of your AC/hp gear is actually monk only? how many pieces have MORE AC than the velious quest armor pieces?
yes monks can get pretty nice AC numbers.. as long as they don't touch monk gear.. and that is the entire point some people are trying to make here.

I do plan to do this quest though, not gunna wear the legs, but gaining about 100 hp from the buff is more than welcomed :)
there's so much better out there to wear for combat though,

Flayed Paebala Leggings +15 AC +6 Intelligence +20 Disease Resist +20 Hit Points +20 Mana(not monk only, and hopefully my next pair of legs if I can drag the guild bag to DN some time soon;)

Oiled Greaves +15 AC +7 Strength +20 Hit Points +5 Mana(all/all)

Drakkel Wolfhide Leggings +9 AC +2 Cold Resist(all/all and pretty darn easy to get too)

Black Pantherskin Leggings +8 AC +4 Strength +5 Stamina +5 Dexterity(even the player made legs have more AC, but are a bit on the heavy side)

Gatorscale Leggings +7 AC +4 Wisdom +15 Hit Points(another all/all piece)

RE: yes.. but that is the point..

Might look into acrylia reinforced leggings, pretty nice and cheap if you know a tailor who will do the combine for ya.

Stats are as follows:
+10 AC +4 Str +5 Sta +2 Wis +0.90 Wt

not too shabby for what amounts to about an hour(2 max) in grimling forest to get the 3 small bricks of acrylia, and an hour in dawnshroud peaks to buy/get a flawless rockhopper hide, and the 5 mins to buy a stack of paeala bark from a vendor in any city in luclin.

Dont talk about class balance when your definition of balance is to make your class the best.. that's UNbalanced. Monks shouldnt be able to tank. Monk gear SHOULDNT have high ac. If you wanna tank make a warrior. If you wanna single pull, pretty much never die (with a little skill) and kick baddie *** with martial arts, pick monk :) plus, +6ac isnt bad for something that weighs 0.1 that's a pretty good ac/weight ratio. plus the extra agility should effect ac, along with all our defence abilities (dodge, riposite etc)

nope not too bad.. but...
Oiled Greaves +15 AC +7 Str +20 HP +5 Mana wt 1.5

Kromrif Military Leggings +14 AC +6 Str +5 Wis +5 vsCold +5 vsDis wt4
(kinda heavy yes, but I will be getting a pair by the time my monks weight limit goes up at 55th)

Drakkel Wolfhide Leggings +9 AC +2 vsCold wt0.1
(my current legs, which I'd use over the grandmasters leggings for fighting, but I still want them for the sta buff, an extra 75-100 hp is never anything to turn down =)
These drop in kael off the giant commoners, not too hard to get to, and not too hard to kill, at 52nd I'd most likely be able to solo them if not for some of them having sow *grumbles*

Gatorscale Leggings +7 AC +4 Wis +15 HP wt 0.4
(I'd use the grandmasters legs over these though, 1 less ac, but lighter, better stats and more hp gain)

AND warrior armor is made of PLATE METAL not cloth, what did u expect? i mean theres no way in hell cloth will be anywhere near as strong as plate metal, so quit complaining
RE: they arent that bad guys
# Mar 28 2001 at 8:53 AM Rating: Default
Okay if you think you aren't going to die because you have FD, you've obviously never played a high level monk. And this other guy is talking about cloth not being strong as metal, good point. Did you check out the Necro leggings (Warlock Pantaloons)? AC 7 baby. Cloth and still HIGHER than our legs. Hmmm.....

it's actually worse than that... monks aren't a cloth wearing class.. they are a leather wearing class... so.. cloth has greater AC than leather type armor... hmm ok

and as for your FD comment, I'll go into detail if people are woundering what you meant
in a group fight FD will NOT WORK
no fail message, the mob con's indiff, but it will beat on you anyways if another player is within melee range and on the agro list of it, great feature eh?

you might try turning off auto attack before FDing. Took me a long time to learn that one, and I haven't had FD not work for me since (excepting failed attempts and cancels due to spells started before I FDed).

Monk leggings have never had good AC. Hell, our Crescent leggings were only 3ac.
