This is a great item. If you're too high to use the effect, just MQ it for an alt (after you get the right CoV faction for both toons). I don't know why people are saying this isn't useful.. I would have died for this item on my druid a few levels ago. Sure there's other manapresII items out there, but not many for secondary slot. You can wear something better in the other slots if you decide to twink the crap out of yourself.. but that's no fun.
The name of the game is EverQuest, people. Frequently, in the older days (IE, when Velious was released) an item like this would have been GOLD for anyone under 44. AC: 15? Mana Pres II? And it's questable? This is great for that era. It's still great, seeing as how it's a potentially free Mana Pres II secondary.
People seem to forget that the main focus of EverQuest is group play. A group of people could easily go around and get all the components for this item for someone, and have great stories to tell afterwards. But then, no one cares about the interaction aspect of the game anymore.
When velious was released, focus didn't even exist in the game. There are a lot better, easier to get things in kunark too. This is mainly for people who like to have somewhat rare items and for the satisfaction of completing the quest.

Idiot if you use something's name as a reason people should be using something for a certain thing it was "intended" to do you only make your argument sound stupid and childish as well as yourself. Quit telling people what they should be doing and do level your main already...
"Quit telling people what they should be doing and do level your main already..." Amazing. You tell someone not to do something and yet do the same thing yourself in the same sentence. Talk about idiots. Go out and buy yourself Doom if leveling your main is all you are able to do with this game. Quit wasting your money and other people's time.
This item is so not worth getting that in fact it puts you at disadvantage to do this quest, as one could have spent time more productively than farming for this quest. This quest should be erased or item upgraded.
I think this is Useless for a bard, considering at the lvl to get they already have Duel wield and the Item is Secondary, Also a bard wouldnt use unless they are building mana, and in that case, theres much beter out there.....And Do Bards use mana? I know there mana counts on Charms But i dont think they use mana to play a song, unless in higher lvls you can see the Effect...Cause my bard isnt 45, but he doesnt use mana on songs
To answer your question. Focus Effects do not work on songs only spells. A bard focus item's closest thing would be their instruments. Hope that helps ya out
In case anyone's interested, when equipped this has the same graphic as the Crystal Chitin Shield or the Crystal Webshield - a pulsing, barely-visible shield.
Ok if you compare this to a Tae Ew Sheild the only reason for this that i can see is if you dont meet the lvl 51 requirement but if it were me id use the time on this quest and get some money for one. Or the pure caster equivant. Mana Pres 2 is what the Black Iron Medallion is for.
Black Alloy medallion has MP2 not black iron. From looking at this quest I'd go with Black alloy also but then I was still using my testament of vanear at 50 due to being cheap and not wanting to buy anything more
Well it looks like a total waste of time=/ mana persurve is totaly crap.. and wheres the wiz or int? bah! I would so spend the time farming for a Tae Ew Sheild.. Is everyone sure this aint jsut a start for a better item?=P
mana pres totally crap ? ? ? .. bay is that a croc .. only thing better than regening mana faster is not haveing to use it at all .. I used the Black Alloy Medalion until I got 60 and replaced it with the Amulet of Insight so that my buffs would lasted longer (extended kei :P ) .. so I can tell you Mana Pres is never a waste ...
There are a couple of reasons people would be using this item, and no, it won't be for the focus effect (yes they should change it). 1. Simply put, they haven't got a higher AC item available for the slot, and they are at 200+ Wis/Int. 2. Swapping out for resists, those are healthy resists +mana.
I dont know where you been but the cap is 255 now til 61 when you can use AA to take it to 355 by 65. yeah it was always been 255 cap but you didnt get more than 1point of mana for each point of wis or int after 200.However this was changed in 2001 and it amazaes me how many ppl still dont know this in 2003.you now get 5 points of mana for each point of wis over 200 at 50
200+ int/wis is not the cap anymore. Intelligence or wisdom will give you mana now as high as you have it so there's really no use in this item anymore. Reason being? Plane of Knowledge museum quest for Fine Antique Ring. You gather a High Quality Cougarskin, Tiny Rockhopper Eye, Undead Froglok Tongue, and Cockatrice Beak and boom you have a ring with Mana Preservation 2 on it. Only has ac and +hp/mana on it but still it's on a ring slot and gives you MP 2. Fill your secondary hand with something that's worth a damn to stats.
Okay, what the hell??? Why is this for monks when you can only use it in the secondary melee spot. What monk in their right mind gonna hold this piece of junk just to get stats?
Dolodar <Soldiers of Destiny> 48 Level Monk The Tribunal
According to the item description pic, monks can't use. Just send a correction in to Allakhazam. Either this is a new pic, he missed it or the original submitter didn't give pic and told him falsly (most likely).
Yes actually, this isn't horrible for monks. Oh, not for mainstream use no. But if you are a monk, and can't see the benefit from this, then please, stop playing one now and play a rogue, as you seem to be too focused on damage dealing (although a primary role, is only one of a monks multitudes.)
This shield, like the Shield of Rainbow Hues from PoF can be used when pulling.. I know there are better, and in a lot of situations it wouldn't be needed, but I'll take every little bit I can get when I'm pulling ToV. And I know of few weapons with better than 15 ac and 10 svc/f....
That aside, you then have to balance against HP on some weapons, but I'll leave you to dither the specifics.

LOL i laugh every time and to think all they needed to do was /who enc or /who bard to see im a imposter.HAHA. =)
Yeah it is worthless to many classes on the list. However, it is an orb. A monk should be able to hold an orb like most others.
The item had no reason to be usable for just casters. However, only a few 44th and lowever casters would benifit.
I love the verdant logic of quests that would only benifit 44th and lower can be generally only be done by someone 45th or higher. Yeah, you can do this with a lower but will be much harder. However, many quests have this weird logic.
Actually, this operates on the spell's level not the casters. So most casters find the level II focus items work on virtually all their spells until they reach level 49. At level 49, it's significantly less useful since that is the next spell rank level. People seem to make this mistake all the time when they post on focus items.
[note: I say most spells because some classes get a few spells between level 44 and 49.]
Additionally, I'd like to add that if your only interested in the Focus effect of this item, you may want to look into a Black Alloy Medallion https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=6020 The BAM can be aquired at a slightly lower level and is quite common on the market.
-- Edit to correct for link to wrong item, thanks to eldoradoman, Sage for pointing out my mistake.
does anyone see anything wrong here? Its focus effect affects 44 and under and the lvl to attain is 45. It's NODROP, which eliminates reselling it for profit, so what was VI thinking (ask a stupid question, get flamed)
At level 51 the effect does not help for some of my newer spells. But as an enchanter I have a few lower level spells memmed all the time that the effect works on. It may only seem like a miniscule amount of mana saved, but its just that, mana saved. I used a bam with the same effect, which also helps when enchanting metals and passing out buffs to the lowbies . Until I get decked out in level III gear, mana pres II is better than nothing, especially when you see that your kei just faded!
Ok first off Verant no longer runs everquest, second of all soe (the ones who do run eq) doesn't put the level to attain on it...that would be allakhazam or one of the people working on the site that input the data. Besides even if you did get it at 45 your spells you got at 44 that your probably still using would be affected. Now while this may not be the best secondary slot item to ever come out it does have 50 mana on it and if you use your 44 and lower spells often it isn't bad to have equipped.
While I agree with the backward logic issue SOE appears to be continuing, I do accept and appreciate the benefits of having such things when I'm working zones that are below my current level for tradeskill component gathering. In such times, it's far nicer for the benefactor of people who Are in zone for exp to be able to offer it cheaply, efficiently, and quickly. There are few such locations that REQUIRE the people you meet to have your front line spells - at their premium expense.
