RE: 1HB 2HB whatever

People People People.

You are looking at the wrong history, the reason Eq has 1hB 2HB HP's etc is it is based on Gary Gygax's Dungeons & Dragons not on the history of Medieval Warfare. What Gygax knew about swords, hammers etc their use and lethality could be written on a matchbox in large lettering. Its a game not a history thesis and certainly not a simulation of anything at any time prior to Gary Gygax's D&D 1st edition.
Weapons Skills = Weapon Styles

I like to think that the weapons skills in game, relate not to what the weapon is, but rather the motions used to wield it. In that case, this should be a 2hs weapon, not a 2hb, since the fighting style is completely different for the two. Think about the way a person hits something with a hammer as opposed to the way thy slash with a sword. Just because the edge was dulled for practical reasons, doesn't make this a true blunt weapon.

Just a question: according to screenshot, isn't this a 2hs or am I blind?
Sharp swords?
# Mar 18 2002 at 6:41 PM Rating: Good
Actually, great swords usually were blunt. Sharpening them did no good, as the main reason for having a great sword was to bash your opponents silly. The image of a razor-sharp sword is the odd thing.

How many of you have ever used an axe or spliting maul to cut your firewood into the correct sizes? The splitting maul is more or less a hammer with a wedge shape on one side. at the point of the wedge the "blade" area is probably 3/16ths wide. it is beveled to a an edge, an edge that in no way would you call it sharp. but it cuts into the firewood. It cuts into it and because of the wedge design it spreads the wood apart and, with a good blow, breaks it off . it is a slashing weopon. it cuts even though it is as dull as a lamp post. The Axe works the same way. Yes you want to sharpen that axe befor you start spliting your firewood. Once it starts cutting into firewood it begins to dull. many types of wood will have stuff in the bark, small pebbles and sand usualy and on occasion you will run into a nail. the edge can actualy be very very dull with chips out of it and when you hit something with it it cuts not bashes. I am not an expert on midevil fighting. but i do know a few things. One: sharpening a weopon, wether it is a great sword or a dagger isnt that hard to do with the right equipment such as the grinding wheel we have all seen in the movies. I have seen versions of that wheel on several ranches when i was younger. they work rather nicely.

two: I would want my sword as sharp as i could get it. Why? Becuase I am not worried about a few nicks if we happen to clash sword together i want my blade to cut into his armor, not bend it, though this does do some damage, but to cut into it. If all i want to do is to club them to death or beat them silly there is a much more economical weopon you can use. a mace or a staff. or a straight rod of steel. Make no mistake they made those swords to cut not bash. a sword is just flat to expensive to make to use it as a mace.

three: to cut the heads off of pikes and such you need a deged weopn. go get someone to hold a long broom stick out like a pike, not take a club and try to break the end off. a blunt weopon will just push that out of the way. But an edged weopon, wether dull or sharpened, will have a better chance to cut it off, even though it might take a few blows. Lastly what do you think caused limbs and heads to be cut off. darn hard to cut a arm or leg off with a club. And yes i know therer are could be so severly crushed that it had to be amputated. Anyway that is how i see it.

Agree. Also, a lot great swords were employed directly behind shield lines to lop off the ends of the enemy's pole arms to render them ineffective. This is a case of a sharpened great sword, but not sharpened for use directly on the enemy.

Good post. Not all swords slash, a 'DUH' statement, but it needs to be said here. (Think of fencers.) In real life, as said above, no 2HS is sharp as a 'razor'.

Common sense, a perfectly sharp sword hits steel and what happens to the edge after the first hit? Duh. Now the 2HS is functioning as a 2HB. So why waste time with a sharpening stone when after the first hit all your work goes down the drain?

I don't think it is a typo on VI's part, and it makes sense to me.

2 handed blunt?
# Mar 17 2002 at 1:01 AM Rating: Decent
If this is a Great sword, how can the skill be 2hd blunt? Don't know if this is a mistake or a typo, but if it is in game like this it would be kinda funny.

I think they messed up in the beginning by making swords like this 2HS but most people wouldnt get it considering they see the word sword and automatically think sharp edged slashing weapon instead of giant metal club that can slash but isnt intended for it.
Must be a bug - Should be 2hs

Before you jump on me... Also new today is the Great Sword of the horde = 2hs
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=10425

One or the other of these must be wrong, and I predict that this one is the one to be fixed.

I'll bet it is a bug, you probably turn in Great Sword of the Horde in Shar Vahl somewhere to get this, probably a mistake thats gonna be fixed in a patch or two seeing as the sword of the horde is 2hs.
2HB is correct
# Mar 15 2002 at 5:34 PM Rating: Default
Actually if you know your weapons history great swords such as this would have been used as bludgeoning objects so this does make sense.
RE: 2HB is correct
# Mar 16 2002 at 12:50 AM Rating: Decent
you are very correct great swords in history were not sharp at all they were basicly iron bars with a handle used for crushing the bones of an armored person without having to remove his armor first :P
1hb?
# Mar 15 2002 at 5:09 PM Rating: Default
Just one question, why is it a greatSWORD if it's 2hb?
RE: 1hb?
# Mar 15 2002 at 5:14 PM Rating: Default
And if its 2hb, why does your subject line say 1hb? Oh and Great Sword, its two words.
RE: 1hb?
# Mar 16 2002 at 10:01 AM Rating: Default
It says 1hb instead of 2hb because I hit the wrong key and didn't notice. I just don't pay much attention when typing :P And just for the record, since when has EQ cared about being historically correct about anything?

I guess, on the note that Verant doesn't care about history, they could make this anything they dang well pleased. Personally, I think it should be made piercing (heheheheheh)
