The flashing beacons you see are mining facilities and they will be guarded. Don't worry about the 5 Drones you need, you will get them. BTW, they are VERY fast but very soft kills. Same with the Fighters.

The unusual radiation source is an abandoned Borg Sphere. Investigate, but at a safe distance. If you get too close you will begin taking damage.
