Scholars locate and research relics of ancient lore, relying on a vast knowledge of the world to produce scrolls and potions that aid in combat or craft.
Note: In your early career when you are just grinding points for advancement, the Crafting Lore scrolls require only 2 texts and 1 relic or trinket, while the Battle Lore scrolls require 2 of each. Even earning fewer points per Scroll you will level faster on the Crafting scrolls. In fact, Crafting Lore scrolls are the only recipes you are given for free at all ranks, even Artisan and above.
Quests
Speak to any Novice Scholar for the first three, or Expert Scholar for the last two.

Crafting Quests
You will simply encounter folks in the world that are in need of a craftsman to make some little thing for them.
- Crafting: Studying the White Ships (6) - (Celondim in Ered Luin) Craft or obtain a minor a minor woodworking-lore scroll
- Crafting: Making Use of the Low-lands (10) - (Gondamon in Ered Luin) Craft or obtain a minor metalworking-lore scroll and a minor woodworking-lore scroll
- Crafting: Knowledge is the Best Defence (15) - (Combe Gate in Bree-land) Craft or obtain a minor battle-lore scroll and a minor weaponsmithing-lore scroll
Guild
Ethel Applegarth<s>, the Scholar's Guild-leader is in the Guild-hall in Rivendell. The door is on the second floor of The Last Homely House, just past the door to Elrond's Library.

Resources
The following table shows what resources can be gathered by a Scholar, and some idea of where to find them. If you follow the link to the database page for the Resource Node, there should be a map there with at least some locations marked. Just remember they are always in Ruins. Many of the Resources also drop from humanoid mobs (Orc-kind and Brigands), as well as treasure chests.

The November 2010 update introduced a new item from the LotRO Store, Ingredient Packs<s>. Each Pack contains materials to make one small item of that level. Larger items may need more Packs per item, and Ingredient Packs cannot be used to make Rare single-use recipes, but they are an excellent way to finish off a rank when you come up just a few short! You do not need to Open the pack. If you have any on you a checkbox will appear on the recipe, Use Ingredient Pack. No matter what the rank, each pack is 25 ($0.25)
Recipes
Many recipes can be purchased in-game from Novice or Master Scholars, or found as drops, but many can also be purchased in the LotRO Store. Not all recipes are in the Store and which ones are offered seems to rotate so they may not be available all the time.
Battle Lore
At every tier the Scholar can produce scrolls that boost the entire fellowship's Offense or Defense ratings.

Crafting Journals
Starting at Journeyman, Scholars can make special Journals that give Crafters a boost to their chance for a Critical Success when making single-use recipes. The journal is consumed at the time of crafting and is selected on the Mastery panel just the same as other Mastery items.
Crafting Lore
Starting at Journeyman, Scholars can make Scrolls that give Crafters a small, short-duration boost to their chance for a Critical Success. You will get these recipes for free at all ranks as you earn them.
Dyes and Paints
Dyes and Paints do not require relics or fragments of research to make, making them very attractive for grinding, but they do use special hard-to-find materials. The dyes can be used to permanently color one piece of gear, and the Wall Paint can be used to decorate your house which makes them very popular. Some gear cannot be dyed (and should say so). At the very least, in addition to the Special Ingredient, you will need one each of Piece of Chalk<s>, Bottle of Water<s> and Small Glass Phial<s> for either type. Some Master and higher Dye recipes use Pile of Dye Salts<s> instead of the Chalk.

Class-specific Recipes
Starting at the Journeyman rank the Scholar can make a few items that are of use only to a specific class. The recipes can be purchased from the class trainer for the class they are for, or from any Scholar trainer.
Captain Tonics
A line of Battle Tonics, beginning with Expert Battle Tonic<s>. The effects are cumulative through the versions:
- Expert: places the Captain instantly into the Battle-readied state.
- Artisan: -10% Skill Power Costs (10 seconds)
- Master: reduces Skill Power costs by an additional 10% (total: 20%)
- Supreme: reduces Skill Power costs by an additional 10% (total: 30%)
Champion Potions
A line of Potions beginning with Journeyman Potion of Fervour<s>. The effects are cumulative through the versions:
- Journeyman: adds 3 Fervour
- Expert: increases the Champion's Devastate magnitude by 5% for 10 seconds
- Artisan: adds an additional 1 Fervour (total: 4) and increases Devastate magnitude by an additional 5% (total: 10%) for 15 seconds
- Master: increases Devastate magnitude by an additional 5% (total: 15%) for 20 seconds
- Supreme: adds an additional 1 Fervour (total: 5) and increases Devastate magnitude by an additional 5% (total: 20%) for 25 seconds
Guardian Tactics
A line of Scrolls beginning with Journeyman Overpower Tactics<s>. The effects are cumulative through the versions:
- Journeyman: decreases the Guardian's Skill Power Costs by 5% and increases Melee Critical Rating by 300 for 30 seconds
- Expert: increases Melee Critical Rating by an additional 200 (total: +500)
- Artisan: increases Melee Critical Rating by an additional 200 (total: +700) and reduces Skill Power Costs by 5%
- Master: increases Melee Critical Rating by an additional 200 (total: +900)
- Supreme: increases Melee Critical Rating by an additional 200 (total: +1100)
Hunter Books
Scholars can make two types of Class-slot books for Hunters:
- Whisper-draw - bow skills generate less threat
- Wind-rider - bow skills cost less Power

Hunter Bow Chants

- Foe-finder - Decreases targets Evade Chance against Ranged Skills

Hunter and Warden Oils
Scholars can make three types of consumable Bow-chant scrolls for Hunters and Wardens. When applied to their Ranged weapons they have the following effect:
- Fire-oil - Some ranged skills will deal fire damage. On a Critical Hit this becomes a fire DOT.
- Light-oil - Some ranged skills will deal light damage. On a Critical Hit this becomes a light DOT. Troll-kin and The Dead are highly susceptible to Light damage.

Hunter Potions

Scholars can make three types of Class-slot books for Lore-masters:
- Beasts - Reduces Power Cost of Sign of the Wild skills
- Nature - Reduces Power Cost of Lore skills
- Dúnedain - Reduces Power Cost of Sign of Power and Sign of Battle skills
Minstrel Sheet-music
Scholars can make a consumable Sheet Music scroll for Minstrels. Each version has all the effects of the earlier versions as well:
- Journeyman: the next induction cannot be interrupted (10 second window)
- Expert: reduces Induction Power Cost by 10%
- Artisan: reduces Induction Power Cost by an additional 10% (total: 20%)
- Master: reduces Induction Power Cost by an additional 10% (total: 30%)
Rune-keeper Rune-tools
Scholars can make two types of Rune-tools for Rune-keepers:
- Inlays - Use of an Inlay makes the next skill used uninterruptible. All Inlays use an ingot of the named soft metal.
- Enamels - Use of an Enamel increases the amount of Attunement received by the next skill used. Each Enamel requires the use of a rare material (see Notes).
