Vin is the descendant of the line of Moltor who first met the blackburrow gnolls. His only remaining heirloom it would seem is a paw (container) whose magical properties are activated by a number of rings. He will apparantly be willing to part with this paw in return for 3 bottles of Khalish and a rat meat pie. (Apparantly there is no accounting for taste)

His father too apparantly valued alchohol more deeply than magical paws, as his father apparantly financed a trip to Odus via the rings that used to be attached to the paw.

For budding alchoholics out there, Odus is also home of some excellent distillers.

  • This mob spawns at 78, -92, -39 This is the upper north side of the maze.

Spawned at 678, -92, -39

This is the upper north side of the maze. I believe his PL are the gelatinous cube, but I was killing everything that pathed through (outside of the water). Took about 30 minutes of killing everything to get him to spawn.

I found him to spawn at exactly this spot. I can't guarantee that he doesn't spawn else where, but this is definitely where he spawned for me. Also worth noting that "a mangy rat" also spawns at that location in addition to the gelatinous cubes. I did not see a dread corpse while I waited (another commenter from 2003 said this was a potential PH as well).

Vin's Place Holders
# Sep 19 2003 at 11:53 AM Rating: Good
Vin's Place Holder is either a Gelatinous Cube or a Dread Corpse. There are many Gelatinous Cube's in the Aquaducts, but only one near the secret enterance from the Qeynos newbie area. If you see a Dread Corpse in the QA, it's a guarenteed PH. There is no reason to spend more than 15-20 minutes on this part of the quest if you have this information. Just swim in from the newbie area and if you see a Cube or DC kill it and wait for another, or Vin. **Please rate my post as helpful**

Ok I just killed him here is the faction hit you take..

Your faction standing with Merchants of Qeynos got worse.
Your faction standing with Circle of Unseen Hands got better.
Your faction standing with Antonius Bayle got worse.
Your faction standing with Coalition of Tradefolk got worse.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos got worse.

Killed sooo many gnolls and turned in fangs to NPC in Halas guards are still Ally to me.

I'm curious as to whether or not these faction hits are huge and would probably make me KoS in Qeynos... I'm currently amiable to most of the town, but I fear if I kill Vin I'll drop to indifferent or something. I guess I'll have to take my druid down there and find out for myself.

aimible is lower than indifferent but if you kill him it might drop to dubiosly but you can still do quest to raise it back up

Gold/Copper ring
# Apr 20 2002 at 5:06 PM Rating: Default
To confirm, Shilak's info is correct. The Gold and Copper rings are indeed different from those you get from the vendors. Having done the quest myself (and almost done with a 2nd), I can confirm this. The easiest way to tell if you have the right rings? Each one is a MAGIC ITEM, LORE ITEM, and has a +1 stat, -1 stat on it. Be careful about this if you're buying the gold/copper rings from someone. The silver ring can also be obtained by turning in Faerix Dust for the Shiny Rings quest. Check out that thread on what to turn in and how to get them.

OK, there's been decent info here, but I'd like to destroy some falsehoods like so much Unrest yard trash:
Vin Moltor is a loveable little plucky level 24 human with no pet, I repeat, NO pet. He wanders around Qeynos Aqueducts and I've never seen him, but I collected a lot of info from the good ol Net and mostly this site. and holds the Paw of Opolla for the Paw of Opolla quest. His ancestor, Gynok Moltor, started the human aversion to gnolls by cutting of the gnoll Shaman Opolla's paw off, rings and all. The gnolls, who were once so welcoming, became furious with the entire human race and started a veritable war which continues today. You can:
a. kill him and loot his stuff, mainly if you can't bake(fun way)
b. give him 3 bottles of kalish and a Rat Meat Pie and he'll give you it, if you want to practice baking.(boring way)

Note that the paw he gives you is not the paw of opolla, and you will be laughed out of EC or Gfay or whatever is the main auction line in your server if you try to sell the paw he gives you.
You require 4 rings:
Platinum Ring-drops off the named mummy Gynok Moltor.
Gold Ring: EDIT: Don't buy the rings! I'm sorry for posting such misinformation. Do the Shiny Rings quest in Kerra Isle
Silver Ring: Can be found in the razorgill pool in Blackburrow Caves in Qeynos Hills.
Copper Ring: EDIT: Same thing as Gold Ring. Whoops! That teaches me humility!
Please note that the methods for Gold and Copper rings are not the real method, but the cheap and easy method.

Place the 4 rings into your Paw container you received from Vin Moltor to receive the Paw of Opolla, a dandy little priest item. If you aren't a priest, this sells for a good 3-4Kpp and is worth the quest. That's about all I have to say, except to disregard my double post back there. Sorry! :P

You have posted some misinformation, the Gold and Copper rings are gained by handing two drops from the Fungus Mutant in Upper Guk to a kitty in Kerra Isle, follow the Shiny Rings quest link within the Paw of Oppolla quest page for details on the items and mobs.

After a little experimenting, it seems the PH for Vin Moltar is one of the wandering creatures that walk through the area with the investigator in. Simply hang around in this area and kill all the wandering creatures (rats, snakes, beetles, cubes, etc) until he spawns. They are pretty fast spawns so shouldnt take more than 10 minutes or so.
Too easy!
# Feb 16 2002 at 11:39 PM Rating: Decent
Just have a look at the EQatlas map before you come for Vin. The shortest route to his spawn is the little pond outside of the Crow, you practically emerge right on top of the spawn.

Vin was spawned when I got there, I imagine that more often than not, he'll be up when you go there too, since the aquaduct isn't too popular.

As for killing Vin, 2 enstills and 3 nukes worked fine, only hard part was keeping him in sight to land the first enstill.

Vin Moltor whereabouts
# Apr 18 2001 at 8:11 AM Rating: Default
I previously posted a question here, asking where this guy wandered about (three posts below or so), but I have since completed the Paw Quest myself.

Vin Moltor, like most MOB down at the sewers, wanders about. However, if you dive down through the secret entrance to the sewers, you can safely wait at the spot where you come out of the water (with one way leading forward, the other to the right). If he is around, he will come by that spot eventually.

However, as you will clearly see, there are more MOBs that come by there. I would suggest killing all mobs that wander by there, and that are not Vin Moltor. They can be PlaceHolders for him. You might want to leave the other beggars alone, though, if you're worried about your Qeynos faction.

So there's no reason to wander deeply into the zone or anything ... just keep sitting right where you resurface, which is also very close to the zone, should you have the need to make a quick escape.

Uhhhhh,,,,NOT!!!!! ol' Vinn Ain't got a pet DUDE!!!
WHERE in the Sewers is he?
# Feb 05 2001 at 1:49 PM Rating: Default
Just wondering ... from the messages I gather he walks around, but does he stick to some particular area? Or does he go about the entire maze??

Reason I'm asking is because of the Rotting Sentries and consorts, who killed me there twice before ... I know they're lvl 33-37, and can't handle those yet (my time for revenge will come :D ), so can I wait at a certain spot (if so, where), or do I have to be lucky he is near my position??

# Feb 04 2001 at 6:39 AM Rating: Decent
For those who may wish to kill the guy - I sat at area 1 (according to EQAtlas.com Qeynos Aquadicts map), killing everything I saw and check Track every minute or so. I think all up I had to wait for about 15 mins. He popped on track, I headed in that direction and he walked into me (Can I have some coffee please...), Root, DoT, DoT, DD = 1 dead alcoholic. Definitely was overkill. Grabbed the paw container, headed back outside. Guards still con Warmly to me and Merchants are still Amiable. Must have been all the good work i put in at lvls 5 to 8 killing gnolls and handing in the fangs. Good hunting.

Vin spawns around the zone that leads to the secret entrance in the wall at North Qeynos. When you enter through that zone, take a right and keep going. You should find the spawning point after a little ways. If you are too confused, look at the map (hint hint)

He didn't say anything about Vin dropping the paw. Looks like to me, he posted what Vin needs in order to get the container.

Don't post if YOU don't know (or obviously can't read).

The container IS the paw without its magical power (since the rings haven't been placed on it), so he was in fact correct. I suppose it might sound misleading if you ignore the "Severed paw" subject...
