March 23rd Patch Notes

I hope you are ready for DX9, because it's now a requirement. Here are today's notes: March 23, 2004 Headlines ------------------------- DirectX 9 is now REQUIRED to play on all SOE EverQuest servers and Venril Sathir! Stormhammer received a new adventure zone. Another story for you to peruse in your storybook. Screenshots in .JPG? What will they think of next! More Grammar changes (no not Grandma, Grammar) DirectX 9 ------------------------- -We have added more detail to the gamma correction slider, which means you may need to adjust your gamma settings which are located under video options -All zones will temporarily have the same sky while we refine DirectX 9 functionality. -Corpses should now be easier to target. -We have added a new command, /rewind, which should free your character if they become stuck in geometry. -There are now independent window resolutions for full screen and windowed mode. Stormhammer -------------------------- If you are a Legends subscriber you can visit the Lost Pyramid of Galuuk Korr. This midlevel adventure zone will allow you to explore a monument from the lost elvish city of Takish Hiz! Now you must find what was left beneath the sands. Good luck. Screenshots -------------------------- -Screenshots will now save to a "Screenshot" folder in your EQ directory -You can now change the format your screenshots are saved in by adding the "ScreenshotType=" line in your eqclient.ini file, which is in your EverQuest directory. To save in jpg format you would change or add the line to read "ScreenshotType=jpg". Supported formats are bmp, jpg, tga, dds and png. Screenshots will continue to save in bmp format unless this line is added. Items -------------------------- -More items have had endurance added to them. -Some Fabled items have been tweaked a bit. -Added recommended levels to some fabled items. -You will now need to be of at least the 50th level to complete the beastlord epic. NPC --------------------------- -Guards in Everfrost Peaks will once again help those in trouble. -Soulbinders should now show in the Find window. -Fabled NPC's will now appropriately reflect their difficulty. Spells --------------------------- -Elemental Draw will no longer Crit on your pets. Miscellaneous --------------------------- -Uqua should be a bit more playable now. -Ikkinz raids have been upgraded slightly.

problems

Well since this patch they screwed plenty up for me.

1. No more EQW. I think this is a pretty common issue. I kinda doubt they will do anything to fix this as SOE is against 3rd party software anyways. What is sad is EQW always ran better then there regular software for me, that is the main reason I use it. Hopefully the good people who made EQW will find a way to get it to work again, I hope so.

2. Slower, much much much slower for me. I got a geforce 3 ti200 with 128 megs of ram and it now takes me about 10 seconds longer to zone, about 15 more seconds to load up, and pok is super laggy to me now.

3. Can't hardly see nothing in old world zones. The way the clipping plane is handled is horrible. Bazaar looks like a smoke filled room for me now (which clip to 0 of course). All old world zones even with clip plane 100% looks foggy. No more red glow in solesks eye, upper guk looked super foggy, it just looks horrible. I hope that not what they want it to look like.

4. Load screen is bugged again for me. I had this problem before also, but eqw fixed it. when loading up my desktop fades in and out. Not a big deal since it goes away once in game, but still. I also have to hit alt ctrl del sometimes to get the mouse to move on the server select screen. Never had that problem with eqw either. Really sad when a 3rd party freeware peice of software fixes all these problems with a pay per month game that is supposedly ran by professionals.

5. My druid looks like a geek! The braciers graphic has changed where it looks horrible. I had the classic all black look going, but now its almost like I have no bracier graphic they way they show up.

Only thing I see on the plus side of this is the sky does look better. I noticed plenty of baby charactors crying over there 60ac breastplate with a rec level of 55 now. I can see there point in being made since they probably sat in front of there PC all day for it, but seriously it did need to have a rec level from the start.

I mean 60ac bp for a level 55 is pretty good, especially since chain classes can use it. Id love to have that on my war or ranger, but not going to sit at pc for 8 to 36 hours to get it.

Not much. I ran into this problem when Luclin first came out with the new graphics and models. I got a friend of mine to give me his old GeForce II card. I still use it today. Yes, the DX9 drivers work fine with it but I still have framerate problems since the patch. Had some before the patch, too, in crowded zones. Now they are bad in all zones.
Part 1

I believe that this is only part 1 of the patch. Hopefully the second part will fix some of this and not ***** it up even more. Also, they could have picked a better time than spring break to do this. Half of the staff is porbably off on vacation and they screwed it up for the people who only get to play at these times. Just my opinions.

Its spring break for you but not for everyone. For some its next week. For others it was last week. In any event, its a pain. In SoE's defense, it is impossible to test every system configuration. So, like it or not, there will be a lot of problems. As the folks at SoE collect the complaints and any associated data they can fix them.

Personally, my old system is pretty much paralyzed by this. So, I will find something else to do for a few days.

Problems after patch :(

After the patch + video card driver update my performance went down :( I lost 300 points on the 3dMark 2001 :( My machine is an Athlon XP 2.6, 1GB DDR2 333MHz, HD 7.200 rpm, and GF4 MX440 64MB. I'm experiencing lags that I don't see on lineage2 that has a much superior graphic or even with unreal 2004 :(

A strange problem that is happening when I log with each of my accounts is that the color for the shadow effect is different for each one :( One uses the black (as usual) and the other white, this create like an irritating fog on the surroundings. I've been trying all the configurations on the options window and no success to correct this fog. The config on the options window are the same for each account :(

I didn't see any promised improvement yet only the problems, unfortunately :( I hope they correct all these inconvenients soon since they will not step back on the decision to use the new architecture. I hope they really bring a better graphic and collision system but if don't or if the performance keeps beeing a problem I will quit this game. The problem here isn't the effort from SOE to bring new improvements to the game (btw this is an obligation for them or the will be kicked from the market soon or later) but it is that always they bring new things up with lots of bugs for players that pay and we lose lots of time with deaths, quests that don't work, bug reports, ... before they correct them. Look at the SWG ... look at the EQ at the beginning ... I'm not paying a monthly fee to be a beta tester.

One: 300 points on the 3d mark tests is nothing. Furthermore, this problem is not directly related to EQ. It possibly comes from DX9, but more likely changes to the drivers on your video card.

Two: Trade in half your good RAM on a decent video card. A gig of RAM is never bad, but an MX series Geforce is. I highly recommend spending the extra 20 bucks for the TI 4200. Considering this is no longer availble, look for a Geforce with the "Ultra" or "XT" designator. Choose one from a known good manufacturer; I recommend EVGA. These cards not only have a newer chipset, they will offer 20% or more better performance with DX9 than that old MX440.

Three: The fog is related to the changes to the sky. If you turn sky OFF, it will be just as is was before. While I think it's frivilous, they are catering to the average new EQ user: "Like ewww! This is soooo ugly! There aren't even any stars. I'll go play DAoC!"

Four: In general, the world does look just a little prettier, though it is very hard to pin down just how.

Summary: Let's place blame where it belongs shall we? Driver and DirectX changes are constantly making new possibilities. All games must grow with them or they will always be surpassed by the next pretty girl on the block. I will give you that SoE's programmers are sloppier than most 15 year olds I know. As such many things don't work as expected and EQ is a HUGE resource hog. That said, this is a game. As long as "the evil corporation" continues to see cash flow, they will assume all is well with the world. I recommend you exercise your vote and stop paying them.
RE: New patch
# Mar 24 2004 at 11:26 AM Rating: Default
It would be better you read again :) 300 points + MUCH MORE LAG IN THE GAME. I know that the performance is related with the video drivers that THEY SAID THAT I SHOULD ( IF NOT MUST ) DOWNLOAD and INSTALL, but it has a some game fingers here.

I used to play 2 accounts + use internet with 6 to 10 windows with NO PROBLEMS and now I CAN`T.

The point here ins`t the amount of memory of my video card, read again my post and you will see that with my machine I RUN lineage 2, UT2k4, and SWG with NO LAG (SWG I have some at the great cities with MANY peole), and they use the same drivers and Direct X than EQ, and HAVE A MUCH BETTER GRAPHIC. As you can see the 300 points that I lost was only the start of my performance lose.

Read again the post and the posts on the SWG site and SEE the insatisfaction with SOE about its politic of launch games with LOTS OF BUGS. Lots of problems with the gamma as well, and other problems more.

Btw I will stop to play and do my vote, I'm just waiting the World of Warcraft come up.

Got the new DirectX9 got latest drivers for video card. I log in and all I see is the UI sky and PC/NPC names WTF help plz
RE: patch
# Mar 24 2004 at 5:33 AM Rating: Good
I have the exact same problem! When I log in to the character select screen, all I see is the gray sky, not even my own characters, no objects and no graphics. I can see their names, but everything else is gray. On the left, the menu's font has gone spazzy and is huge. If I click on 'enter' it goes in fine, but once inside, I still can't see anything except NPC names. Its all gray. I can see and work the menus fine, (the font is a normal size now); including the map (I managed to zone as well). But I can't see anything.

I have a Hewlett Packarad 6611 PAV with 533MHZ and 256 MB RAM. My video card is an Intel 82810 Graphics Controller.

I installed DX9, and have tested the direct 3D via the dxdiag as well; all of the tests work. My video card drivers are the latest, but no longer supported as of 8/2002, so its possibly a problem with that, but it seems to be working fine with DX9 via the test option anyway. All I can think of is something on the EQ end not supporing my card any longer. I don't know.

*sigh* I know my comp is crappy and old, but I didn't really want to upgrade again to a new card to play it. I have upgraded 3 times already, in HD size, and in RAM.

This couldn't have come at a worst time. I was 3 items off completing the scavenger hunt. Now thats the least of my problems; I don't think I may be able to play again...

The Intel 82810 Chipset does not fully support DirectX 9. There are some updated drivers at that are unofficial, but I doubt they will help you too much. You need to get a new video card!

No I won't! They said they will patch tonight for the Intel 82810 and 82815 Chipsets... and I quote;

"We have found the problem with the Intel 82810/815 chipset graphics and implemented a fix. The next patch (which is tonight, I believe) will include the fix."

My graphics started out real dark as well in selection screen, and in game. However as soon as in game I adjusted the gamma up and it is fine. I do notice increased graphics, some stuff is clearer, the lighting is more realistic, also the sun rise/sets are neat with streaks of light through the clouds. I only was in a few zones and on about an hour. I did not seem to have any lag issues, however I have heard there is increased lag particulary in larger open zones like dreadlands. I am sure they will patch again in the next week or two to smooth out the lag and improve the graphics further. Those having issues I would suggest you go to and see if your graphics card is on the supported list or the trouble list. Also updating your sound card drivers (or sound card even) may help a lot with issue and lag.
RE: patch
# Mar 25 2004 at 6:47 AM Rating: Good
The first thing I did was play around with the clip plane and the gamma and nothing worked. The programmers themselves mentioned that there was a problem with all Intel 82810s and 82815s and even though they are unsupported, a fix has been made. =)

On the plus side, Intel cards now work on test at least my 82810 one does); which I can confirm as of 20 mins ago before all the servers (including test) went down. It works fine... things to note:

1). The fonts are bugged out, but this is a common problem, and can be fixed in game with the command '/fontface arial' or whatever font you use.

2) The game is decidedly laggier; even in parts that at before were not; but though annoying-- its nothing serious. Its a minor gripe at best given that I couldn't even play till a few hours ago. The lag and clip plane problems seem to have affected almost anyone, especially the low-end users. Its annoying, yes, and I can only hope it improves slightly. I know that for some other people though, the cursor takes a minute to travese the screen. I get laggy when there are wide open spaces to generate and lots of SoL models on. Looking down solves this (though its hardly a great solution, its better than nothing).

While I think the timing of this graphics engine upgrade was abysmal, they probably do have a valid reason for it. Whatever that is, however, I have no idea.

At the risk of being flamed for being an apologist for SOE, after five years I still find EQ to be a freaking miracle of programming. Yeah, I'm over 40 years old, so I remember punch cards and raster output (on paper and early monitors), and probably don't take the graphic capabilities of today's computers and games for granted. So I'm willing to cut them a little bit of slack when they try to improve the game while keeping it compatible with thousands of different combinations of hardware, operating system versions and installed software.

If you think Sony is "evil" or "incompetent," that's certainly your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But let's stop the knee-jerk bashing of Verant/SOE, especially when none of us really knows what the problem was today. They will fix it, they always do, even if not always as immediately as most of us would like.

If they never added to the game content or tried to keep the game engine up-to-date, I suspect many of the people complaining about the patch today would then complain that the game was boring and tedious and behind the times.

Just my 2cp.

# Mar 25 2004 at 5:18 AM Rating: Decent
Aye i agree with Chazy :)

I dont play EQ coz of the looks but coz of the fun itself. Ok the 3d engine and all makes it more fun but the mechanics of the game / grouping / ... make it what it is -> my favorite game. I never have my graphic details turned on only have th lucline models up for the classes i play so i can use my horse and thats it. Ppl who complain about graphics are usually young powergamers who missed all the 90s PC games and are not used to resolutions lower then 1024*768.

Just hope SoE gets this DX9 thing solved soon other than that im hanging around till EQ2 spawns :)

heh, patience is in shorter supply than common sense for the most part. They always know better than the people doing the honest work, its always a dead simple issue to get all this code migrated to production if you listen to the whiners.

I look at what (little) they have to say, and I simply see no sign of intelligence. There is no knowledge at all of the process nor the complexity. So, they simply identify themselves as "the people who know so little" to me. That's fine. But, if they are so put out do they stop playing the game? No. Do they even hold back once the servers come up? No.

You just have to sit back and laugh.

I agree. I remember playing Zork on a PDP11/24 and then progressing to Wizardy when PC's first came out.

With an IT background, I can appreciate the need for down time to do upgrades. To eliminate the whining I believe that SOE should set downtime expectations longer than they think it will take. To this day I have never seen anyone complain that they could log in an hour sooner than publicized.

I agree, the work done on this game is amazing. To keep the game working and functional, adding new content, and new commands and interface options on a 5 year old game all the while keeping all us players interested and happy enough to keep wanting to play.

So the game was unavailable for a good portion of today, its not the end of the world. I wanted to play this morning at the original scheduled up time before I went to work. I couldn't, oh well, no big deal, nothing to get excited about. I came here looking for useful information about what the changes are like and all I seem to find is complaints and flames about the servers being down.

There is much more to life the this game, and if your so upset and Sony is so 'evil' then quite playing. Then I will not need to read thru all your complaints to try and get some useful information.

Might mean that your Graphics Card doesn't support DX9.

(Assuming you're running some flavor of Windoze)
- Open the start menu and select "Run..."
- In the window that opens up, type "dxdiag" (without the quotes). This will open up the DirectX Diagnostics tool.
- On the system tab, verify that it says "DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902" towards the very bottom of the screen.
- Click on the Display tab at the top.
- Click on the Test Direct3D button and follow the prompts.
- If any of the tests fail, then you're card doesn't fully support DX9. If the tests succeed, try re-running the EQ patcher.
- Look in the "Notes" section on the display tab for any messages indicating that there might be something askew. For example, mine has a message "Hardware Accelerated D3D9+ is not available because the driver doesn't support it. Try downloading a new driver" (meaning that I'm at the mercy of Dell to update the video driver of this laptop to include D3D support for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 in the Latitude D600 that I use).

After installing the new driver I also got the "no 3D device found" message. I followed UEShredder's directions and recieved the same "Hardware Accelerated D3D9+ is not available because the driver doesn't support it. Try downloading a new driver" message. But I know my ATI RADEON 8500 is DX9 compatible...sigh.

Anyway, I tried again, this time uninstalling the Device Driver AND the Control Panel before reinstalling the driver (I had uninstalled only the driver the first time.) This time dxdiag said DX9 was working fine. whew! I tried running EQ and recieved the "install new drivers" message again! WTF? whatever, i clicked "play anyway" and everything worked fine...pretty new nighttime sky!

So, anyone reinstalling ATI drivers, uninstall Device Driver AND Control Panel before installing new drivers...and/or ignore the install new driver popup...hope this helps....

Thank you so much for your post. I couldn't get EQ to load because of the driver problems. unfortunately when I followed the links from station.com it loaded directX 8.1, causing some kind of .dll error, which I figured out following your directions. I ended up typing DirectX 9.0 in my browser search bar and getting directly to Microsoft's download site. Within just a few minutes all was working perfectly. I hope this helps for those of you that still don't have the right driver.
