spell change
# Jun 22 2004 at 5:07 PM Rating: Decent
This spell has been changed as of the last patch: it costs less mana and also does less damage, but its casting time has been reduced to 2 seconds, making it something similar to an upgraded version of Scars of Sigil (but direct damage not line-of-sight). I love this spell, a great 'pick off the monster as it's trying to run away' kind of spell.

If the current version on test goes live it's going to become a quick favorite. Especially, for Evoc Mages.
why evocation?

Ok, people listen up. It doesnt matter what you, your friends, your uncle bob and aunt fran, or your dog think about the spell. Lets get cost, location and then work on it. With mana conservation items and damage enhancing items the spells are always more useful than listed.

This spell is located on the Butcher Block Adventure Merchants. It costs roughly 650 adventure points. I know it might seem like that is a lot of points. However, at 51 points a pop, it wont take that long. Besides 1/2, or 1/3 of an AA point (if all exp to AA), 300 to 400 plat, chance at loot and augments per adventure, aint that bad. Also take into consideration there are items you can buy from the adventure merchant that is very VERY nice. For instance at 720 MM adventure points there is a mask. It already has +10 to all stats and saves, and it has three open slots for augmentation. So, getting lots of points has its benefits.

this spell is 2.8ish seconds faster than shock of firey blades and costs more mana / damage is that enough to make me spend my points for it? i think not.

2.8 sec cast time less
16 mana more
505 dmgs less
than Shock of Fiery Blades (61)
ok .. BUT
Shock of Fiery Blades is a Conjuration spell and this one is an Evocation
this spell is a good spell .. but too expensive in adventure points :(

This spell would only be good for a mage who specialized in Evocation and did not switch to Conjuration once he got to 58 or so. If you are a 61+ mage and are not specialized in conjuration, your effective mana pool is less than 1/2 that of a mage who has.

Plus, with the right AAs and the 65 Earth Pet, you can pet-canni to 100% mana in less than 90 secs (usually 60 secs). Something that you would not be able to do when specialized in evocation.

With the recent changes to pet canni a lot of mages have switched back to evocation (myself included). If Pet canni would have still been in place I wouldn't have made the switch but now that I'm evocation spec'd this spell will be really nice.

One more thing ....

When comparing a average (best scenerial) of one nuke between mana saving of Evoc and Conj nukes you will have Conj being a very tiny bit better. Streatch that tiny bit over a 3 or 4hr raid where u do alot more than just one nuke.

IMHO ...

Evoc's highest dmg is a bolt which can be problematic when at that lvl and raiding. (unless killing giants)

Conj highest nuke is higher than the non bolts of Evoc. Pets are Conj. Sun Vortex is conj with help from Elemental silk gloves = sweet deal.

If u own GoD you can spec in Evoc also up to 100 skill. Sure it costs a lil but in the long run it will help.

Inshort, in durations the Conjugation is beneficial while Evocation is useful when u see those nice 4.2k crit from FoT(firebolt of tallon).

Bottomline? With Evoc ppl will say WOW that's an awsome crit (and mana efficient). With Conj YOU will know ur saving alot of mana through the duration of EQ life even with your 3.3k crits.

Alright, I get really tired of these evocation vs conjusration arguments, but I'm feeling saucy and want to respond on this one. Lets just break down the perks of going conjuration vs evocation and vice versa.

Evocation: Fire based nukes and Magic based dots cost less mana. We know our dots are generally crap, but they're nice for the evocation specialized mage since they can land on mobs that are fire resistant if you have a focus for dots.

*edit* oh, and as of some time ago you don't really need line of sight to hit with bolts now. The only way you'll miss is if something is stuck in a wall. The delay for the nuke to hit the target is still there though.

Conjuration: A bunch o stuff, but most notably our pets, mod rods, magic based nukes, and pet toys.

Alright, I'm evocation and I'll explain why. Pet canni is no longer existant. I prefer not chain petting and gearing out my pets instead (with the diamond prism of companionship, healing between fights is no longer necessary). If I'm grouped, basically I'm nuking, and for raw damage and mana effiency you can't beat Firebolt of Tallon. Yes, I summon mod rods for people, but not nearly as much as I'm nuking. With a decent group my pet will never die, thus I'll never need to summon anoter one. The only summoning I'm doing is mod rodding. I will admit that in some situations where things have high fire resists that the conjuration nukes are more desireable, and in those cases I bite the bullet and use magic nukes. But generally I can use my evocation nukes most of the time and get the biggest bang for my buck.

Now if you're someone who prefers to chain pet, fight lots of fire resistant dragons, summon a crapton of stuff to sell in the bazaar, or you're providing mod rods for an entire raid often, then yes, you should specialize in conjuration. If you're generally grouping and in those groups you're nuking nuking nuking, then evocation is te way to go. Not only does evocation have the most damaging nukes, they also have the widest variety of nukes to choose from. I can't think of how many times Scars of Sigil saved my butt by chain casting that fast little spell.

I'm not trying to say I think one way is better than the other. I'm obviously biased toward evocation, but I can respect the choice conjuration mages made. Conjuration definately has a wider variety of uses, but I don't do a variety of things... I blow stuf up. :)

Don't forget about Secondary Forte AA, specialize in Evoc and Conj

lol ... i respect your opinions.

Don't forget the mage Ornate/EP gloves. (now-a-days) These gloves are worth cr*p compared to the GoD and OoW items. Regardless, many are still forced to used them since they're the best we can get. The FE on the gloves save a bit of mana on our Conj 65 spell (fire based), which makes it much more mana efficient than FoT.

Just something i thought i'd add...

Have fun flaming me Evoc mages! =P
