Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This task is the second in a series of three. It is a solo task that begins with Thistlebrush (map) in the Valley of King Xorbb at location -1385, -970, 107 (a little ways north of the zone-in).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed The Halfling Trail

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush says 'Your efforts have helped us much, especially Brantun and Barleyburr when [they] were lost in the valley. Thank you!'

Thistlebrush holds out his hand toward you, and flames leap to life, dancing about on his palm. 'Brantun and Barleyburr yet live! Our hope is not lost, thanks to you!' With his other hand, Thistlebrush holds the haft of a torch and dips it into the living fire. 'But as you know, they have not escaped [danger].'

You say, 'What danger?'

Thistlebrush says 'Whilst goblins crowd the halls of underearth, Brantun and Barleyburr cannot emerge from hiding and descend to the seat of Xorbb. Besides, with Brantun's leg broken and Barleyburr's constant hunger gnawing at his mind, the two would not make it far. We must aid them with food and healing, but first we must create a [distraction].' Thistlebrush proffers to you the lit torch.'

You say, 'A distraction?'

Thistlebrush says 'We will spread pandemonium among the minotaur camps and lure the goblins to the surface to aid their fellow minions. Once the mayhem evacuates the caverns, you can deliver aid to Brantun and Barleyburr, and they can continue their journey. You will take up this torch, [right]?'

You say, 'Right!'

Thistlebrush hands you the torch, and his eyes gleam in its light. 'Burn the tents of the minotaurs. They will bellow with rage, and the goblins will answer their call.'

You have been assigned the task 'We Have to Go Deeper'.

You receive "Thistlebrush's Everburning Torch".

Brantun and Barleyburr have escaped the goblin cook's mallet, but now they are hiding within the goblin halls, injured and waiting for a chance to resume their quest. Thistlebrush wants you to create a distraction that will lure some of the goblins out of their halls. Then you can deliver aid to Brantun and Barleyburr.

By destroying minotaur tents along the western river, we can put Xorbb's forces in disarray. Goblins will come to the surface to aid the minotaurs in salvaging their encampments. Use the torch Thistlebrush gave you to light the tents on fire.

Destroy 7 of the minotaur shelters to create a diversion 0/7 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Throughout the valley are several minotaur shelters scattered about (in the various mino camps around the zone). Use the torch on these tents. When you do so, some waterbrigade goblins spawn and try to heal the tents. These goblins don't have many hitpoints and don't hit too hard for their level (max ~6,500), but they can sometimes appear in large numbers.

Speak with Thistlebrush 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Tell Thistlebrush Xorbb's forces are in disarray and that you lured out the goblins.

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush says 'The valley teems with goblins and minotaurs, as though you stamped upon an anthill. The goblin nest has emptied, and will remain so while the detritus of your handiwork has been cleared. Now is the time to deliver aid to Brantun and Barleyburr.' Thistlebrush removes a pouch from his pocket. 'This poultice will soothe Brantun's leg and give him the strength to walk, though it cannot fully restore his mobility. It is the best I can do from afar.' Thistlebrush rubs his chin for a moment. 'Barleyburr needs ham. He thrives upon it. I fear without sufficient ham supply, the plan will be ruined, for Barleyburr will be too weak to bolster Brantun's spirit, let alone his own. Having none of the meat myself, you must steal it from the minotaurs' spits. Once you have some, deliver the ham and poultice to Brantun and Barleyburr.'

You receive Thistlebrush's Poultice.

Kill a minotaur cook that is watching over his ham 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Steal some ham off of a minotaur spit 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Thistlebrush has given you a poultice to deliver to Brantun, but Barleyburr still needs ham to keep his strength. You will need to kill a minotaur cook and steal a piece of ham that is roasting on his spit.

Known spawn points for minotaur cooks (map):
* -675, 635, -73 (south-central part of the zone; east of the north end of the large lake/waterfall)
* 690, 195, -45 (north-central part of the zone; southeast from the architect camp - across the river)
* 700, 730, -60 (northwestern part of the zone; southwest from the architect camp - same side of river)
* 1025, -705, 136 (northeast from the north exit out of the crater area)

Minotaur cooks hit for an average of 14k; AE rampage (about full damage); have a fair amount of hitpoints; and cast "Meat Cleaver" on random targets:

Meat Cleaver: Single Target, Magic (-950)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 60000

The spits are right next to the minotaur cooks. Click one to receive a Large Ham Chunk.

You cut a piece of ham from the spit.

Tell Brantun that you have created a diversion and brought supplies 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Brantun (and Barleyburr -- map) are in the underground system at around /waypoint -811,+903,-372.18 in the narrow hallway that's just west of the bar / kitchen area. He's on Find (Ctrl+F).

You say, 'Hail, Brantun'

Brantun lurches at you, sword drawn, aiming steel at your throat. Barleyburr grabs Brantun's sleeve and barely restrains him from spilling your blood. Brantun speaks slowly but keeps his sword pointed at you. 'You are no goblin, but can I trust you? Many like you would think no more of killing a halfling than killing a goat. Although, you say Thistlebrush sent you?' Brantun lowers his sword but keeps his hand clenched around the hilt and his eyes narrowed. 'Then prove to us your words.'

Give the large chunk of ham to Barleyburr 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Barleyburr grabs the ham from your hands. His eyes widen, and a smile breaks across his face before he brings the ham to his lips and kisses it. 'The minute I saw you, I knew you were an upstanding _____, _____, who definitely values the finer things in life! Brantun, how could you be so suspicious of _____? Anyone who bears the gift of ham is a wonderful friend to have!' Barleyburr claps you on the shoulder. 'When this whole Xorbb business is done, all of us will sit down and share some cured ham, pints of ale, and excellent company!'

Give Brantun the poultice for his leg 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Brantun rolls up his pant leg and applies the poultice over the ridge of tibia poking through the skin. He stifles a cry as his skin glows and the wound begins to close. After a moment's rest, he rises and begins to walk about, limping, although more mobile than he had been. Out of breath, he addresses you. 'You spoke truthfully, _____, but a slab of ham and a mended leg will not guarantee our success. Even with your diversion, I doubt we can penetrate Xorbb's heart while the eyes gaze upon us.'

Ask Brantun what he needs to continue the quest 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Brantun'

Brantun says 'While we hid, we listened. The goblins in their tavern spoke of the eyes that watch over Xorbb's domain. They are his lieutenants and generals, his tacticians and seers. They see what you and I cannot. They penetrate even the most ancient incantations of invisibility. We will never avoid their gaze -- unless what the goblins say is true. Within the mines of crystals, which sprouted from veins touched by the heart of fear, living shards wander tunnels like ghosts, invisible even to the eyes that patrol the mines. The miners told tales of these wraithlike crystals flickering into existence before vanishing once more, and many miners are afraid to work alone. If we could manage to obtain pieces of these crystals, Thistlebrush might be able to extract their power and give to us a means to avoid the eyes.'

Speak with Thistlebrush 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Tell Thistlebrush that Brantun and Barleyburr cannot make it past the eyes of Xorbb unseen. Brantun overheard goblins saying that pieces of living crystal shards in the crystal mines can blind in and out of existence. Thistlebrush might know how to harness this power.

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush looks into the distance. His eyes appear glassy, and he slowly nods while he speaks. 'What Brantun describes must be powerful magic, elemental in its form. The heart of fear must have spread roots throughout this valley, and even the rocks and soil bear its seed. I know a spell -- I do not know its origin, so ancient is it -- that might reveal to you that which cannot be seen.' Thistlebrush holds out his hand. A cloud as black as midnight begins to swirl around Thistlebrush's palm, and a small idol takes shape in his hand. 'Place this upon the ground, and the hidden becomes visible. Go now to the crystal mines. Brantun and Barleyburr depend upon what you discover!"

You receive a Visibility Totem.

Loot 4 Multiphasic Facets from multiphasic crystals 0/4 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Thistlebrush has given you a totem of ancient magic that might reveal the unseen creatures of crystal. In the crystal mines to the west, drop a totem, reveal the hidden beings, and try to take pieces of crystal from their bodies after you kill them.

Go to the mining/crystal area of the underground system (these are the caves in the northernmost part of your map). Right-clicking the Visibility Totem spawns an aura in place. Mobs called a multiphasic crystal wander the entirety of the crystal mines, but they are only visible and attackable if they are in one of these auras. In order to kill one, it has to be kept inside the aura until its death.

Once a totem is dropped on the ground, it generates an aura with a fair range. If you have multiple group members on this step, you can set it up so that you have a large range. Keep an eye out for "a multiphasic crystal" (hyrda model) to appear. These roam through the tunnels.

a multiphasic crystal" is not KOS and not social with anything else (including each other).

They don't hit hard (a max ~7,000); flurry; are belly casters (stand on them to land spells); and have a series of emotes that lead up to an AE (they keep cycling through them until dead):

a multiphasic crystal's first head begins to glow.
a multiphasic crystal's second head begins to glow.
a multiphasic crystal's third head begins to glow.
a multiphasic crystal's heads discharge their energy. ("Triphobic Discharge" is cast)
a multiphasic crystal's heads are drained of power.

Triphobic Discharge: PB AE 55', Prismatic (-950)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 70000
2: 20% Chance to trigger: Triphobia

Triphobia" is a 60-second fear.

They drop 1-3 crystals per kill.

Speak with Thistlebrush 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush's face darkens, as though a cloud were passing overhead. 'These crystals do not belong to this world.' He covers them inside his hands, and a black glow emanates from the cracks between his fingers. Revealing his palms, he displays to you two rings forged of the crystal. Darkness seems to hang about Thistlebrush's head, and he speaks slowly. 'With these rings, Brantun and Barleyburr will walk in the realm of the crystal. The eyes will not see them. But I cannot say who or what else might be watching when the rings encompass their fingers. Go now. Regardless the cost, we must see this matter to the end.'

You receive 2x Multiphasic Ring.

Give a Multiphasic Ring to Brantun 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Give a Multiphasic Ring to Barleyburr 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Using some strange power, Thistlebrush has fused the crystals into rings. Wearers of the rings will possess the power of invisibility. Now Brantun and Barleyburr will be able to avoid the eyes of Xorbb.

Barleyburr shudders as you hand him the ring. 'Must we wear such a thing, Brantun? It is heavy, unnatural...' Barleyburr places the ring in his pack, and weight seems to lift from him. 'We best get to moving now. The sooner we finish our journey, the sooner we enjoy that feast, _____!'

Brantun says 'So the shards exist...I did not know Thistlebrush's abilities were so advanced as to harness a power such as this.' Brantun holds the ring in his hand, and his visage grows darker, even under torchlight. 'It is heavier than it looks.'

Speak with Brantun 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Brantun'

Brantun says 'Thank you, _____. Await our message. When we near the heart of Xorbb's power, we will call for Thistlebrush to execute his final stratagem. The next time we meet, I pray it is above ground!'

You have succeeded in bringing aid to Brantun and Barleyburr. With the tunnels evacuated of many goblins, and with the rings you have given Brantun and Barleyburr, they can now make their way toward Xorbb's seat of power. Stay in contact with Thistlebrush to know when Brantun and Barleyburr send their final message.

The Multiphasic crystals are not 100% spell resistant. They are belly casters. You just need to stand right on them and spells will land. As a necro I dotted him up and then backed WAY up so you avoid the 40k DD spell he casts about 1/2 way thru.

The Minotaur Cooks do not hit for 40k. Nowadays they are standard mobs for the zone hitting for 14k or so.

On TLP servers, these are still hitting for 40k on raid geared tanks. It's the top end of the spectrum, but their hits range from 3-4k up to 40k. Source: I just did this about 5 minutes ago and took a few swings of dumb.

They were easy to 2 box with mage and enchanter. I set up in hallway between green room and blue room on map. Parked pet on wood plank on floor, dropped totem at pet and east towards the green room, repeated until crystal roamed along.

Set mage as puller and have enchanter <or any other char with a merc> set up invis around corner in green room.

The hardest thing about these is Fear. If you get oor of the fear cast you can just spam Servant on crystals. No one gets feared, pet and servants dps them down.....

.....rinse and repeat

Just a note if you are boxing multiple toons no crystals will drop if the toon that does the damage has already collected all 4. I was having my necro and merc warrior do all the damage while my druid and shaman hung back to avoid the AE Fear and just healed but found that after the necro got 4 crystals they stopped dropping if the other toons did not do some kind of damage to the mob.

Burning the tents
# Jan 21 2013 at 9:54 PM Rating: Good
You can destroy the tents in many ways:

- Can be soloed by doing just ranged dps, the mobs around the tent don't "assist" the tent. Takes a lot of time, but is totally risk free.
- Have one group member aggro all goblins near tents, pull mobs away and rest of the group burns tents, repeat.
- We managed to destroy some tents without getting aggro at all, just need to leave the crime scene asap and stay invis.

Btw:

- One torch click destroys about one third of a tent in 30 seconds and it can be burning from several spots at a time = the torch spell stacks.

You have to do some Melee damage as well as the clicky / range. I ran into this same problem and someone helped me with that tidbit, after killing about 6 with no updates.
Waterbrigade Goblins can find you if you have this task

Normally, the waterbrigade goblins can't see through invis. However, if you have this task, they can agro on you, even if you have invis on. They will not con as "see invis," yet they can still sense you and attack.

The way I got em:
Plant the visibility tokens (at least 3) in a row, with a certain space between them, so you create a corridor for the mobs to pass through and you can "see" them approaching your camp.
Plant one or two more visibility tokens as you fight. Sometimes the mob can scape if one of the tokens fades.
These mobs hit like trucks and cast a spell called triphobic discharged (if the spell lands, you take ~45k damage).
The Multiphasic crystals are also 100% spell resistants. Do not waste mana on them. None of our necro or mage spells ever landed.
Fast way to burn down the tents
# Jan 05 2013 at 4:23 PM Rating: Decent

Kepp the char with the torch attacking the tent and using the torch as ofen as possible (need to use the torch many times to completely burn down a tent).
While this happens, have the rest of your goup attack the goblins that will come to try and rebuild the tent.
If the char with the torch is not disturbed by the goblins, you can complete this step quite fast.

Our exp group (lvl 98-100) pulled this mob and combat data says max hit was around 40k and often 25k for 98 pally / 3500 AA / 7300 AC.
Hits were hard, but fairly easy single group mob anyways.

Thistlebrush now gives out the poultice when you speak to him immediately after burning down the shelters instead of in the very beginning.
