Shade's Bane

This task begins with Wraithguard Thentil Strongarm in Valdeholm at location -1510, -1070, 85.
Once you have faction and have completed previous tasks (may not be required -- confirmation needed) he will offer you the Shades Bane task (requestable if at least amiable with "Wraithguard". (Need information on all task steps, descriptions, etc. Bear in mind that this is a task, so you may need to have the task before doing any/all of these steps.) Loot 8 Marks of Rallos Zek (random drop in Frostcrypt). Loot Obsidian Cup - (Ashengate drop from Drakkin model mobs) Get to the edge of the lava under the dragon statues and "fill" the Obsidian Cup with lava. This area is past the Argil Oppressor and down the ramp where lava pours out of the dragon statues. This produces Cup of Lava, a 4-slot container). In the Cup of Lava, combine four Marks of Rallos Zek. Do this twice, producing two Darkspheres. Loot a Reliquary Fragment from any drake in Ashengate. In a forge, combine a Smithy Hammer, Sharpening Stone and a Goldfire Ore (trash drop in Vergalid) to produce a Pouch of Goldfire Ore Dust, a 1-slot container. In the Pouch of Goldfire Ore Dust, combine the Reliquary Fragment to produce an Ore-Coated Reliquary Fragment. In the Cup of Lava, combine the Ore-Coated Reliquary and the two Darkspheres to produce an Obsidian of Shade Bane (the cup is consumed). You have fashioned the items together to create something new! You have fashioned Obsidian of Shade Bane. Your task 'Shade's Bane' has been updated. Your faction standing with Wraithguard Leadership got better. This piece of blessed and magical obsidian will serve you well in your fights against the Shades. Use it well, but be cautious in your journeys into the crypt. Your faction standing with Wraithguard got better. You gain experience!! The only hope is to trash the task.. get it again..and start from scratch. As for me.. no thanks. It's not worth the time and effort.. especially since i'd already totaled 18 marks that others could have had. The workaround ? Forget the bane weapon.. while exp'ing or farming marks in FC.. do the skelly hails and turn in's for the 10 potions.. the're a 250DD and each lasts 200 minutes or until you die. Use the marks for the faction and the turn in's to the hall guard.

When this zone was new and we were experimenting with how to do it.. I did the combines out of order and got the "do nothing" black orb and no bane weapon. I spent a week regathering 8 marks.. spent another day gettng the Obsidian Cup and ran to the lava.. no update.. no 4 slot container.. so apparently if you mess up finding out this quest.. may as well trash the whole thing and save the time trying to redo it.. it wont. Sometimes learning is lousy...
What Zone is the lava in, does anyone have a location? i know its by some dragon status, is it in Ashengate, Vald, or Frostcrypt?

ashengate, west side, under the bridge. lava pool down there. just get close and the task will update on it's own.

I think it's seriously lame that these tradeskill combines can fail...it's hard enough to get the pieces as it is. /rude soe
The first version of obsidian cup is in fact an 1 slot container, not 8 slots.

As the exact text isn't yet shown, is this a loot or a collect one?
Looking at what's up there and that pretty much is the exact text. Nothing can be pre-looted except the Goldfire Ore and that's basically a subcombine of a step.
"Bear in mind that this is a task, so you may need to have the task before doing any/all of these steps."
In TSS ANY task step which says "Loot 20 so-and-so's" you MUST have task before looting them to receive credit. However, if it says "Collect 20 so-and-so's" it will update what is already in your inventory and any moving into your inventory, i.e. taking them out of bank, looting, buying from someone in bazaar, etc. etc.

this may have worked at one point but it no longer does . I tried moving the marks in and out of my bank as well as making a corpse in FC and looting the marks but alas no task update. looks like it's pointless to loot the marks from Mobs unless you actually have the task up

Yes, thats because this task says to LOOT... not collect. Read the details... if it were to say Collect then this would be possible, but since it says LOOT, then it is not.
there was a point when the TSS tasks gave credit for 'looting' items off your own corpses. i know because i was doing the cull the gnolls task and i got credit for the teeth on my own corpse whenever i died and looted them. so it's not that it says 'loot' as much as the fact that they fixed the coding error involved
There are tasks in which you must Loot, and tasks in which you must collect. Yes, many tasks were changed at some point, but the only change done was to make some of them collect as opposed to loot. Nothing was done in the opposite direction.

On the final use of the Cup of Lava (In the Cup of Lava, combine the Ore-Coated Reliquary and the two Darkspheres to produce an Obsidian of Shade Bane), the answer is Yes, the cup consumed. However, you use it twice earlier in the quest and in those combines (In the Cup of Lava, combine four Marks of Rallos Zek) the cup is not consumed.

trivials at 176. i tried combine with 156 and no mods and was (luckily) successful.
In (what container?), combine the Ore-Coated Reliqaury and the two Darkspheres to produce an Obsidian of Shade Bane.
It's combined in the Cup of Lava.
The corrected text would read: In the Cup of Lava, combine the Ore-Coated Reliquary and the two Darkspheres to produce an Obsidian of Shade Bane.
Once combined you can chose the reward of the Daystone from the new reward menu.
Please note. That when I did this quest, the text of the Quest was bugged, and actually said combine the Reliquary and the 3 (three) darkspheres. This is incorrect, you only combine 2.
Also - The faction hits are wrong. It increases two factions. Wraithguard and Wraithguard Leadership. Here's the text from the completion.

when i did this on Dec 15th, the quest text was still bugged as you stated, telling you to combine 3 Darkspheres. but 2 did indeed work just fine
