This task is the first of three tasks for Razorthorn access.

This task is assigned to you when you loot a Lore No Drop skin in The Devastation. The task requires looting a total of nine such skins, and once you have the task you will get credit for looting skins that drop in Sverag or Razorthorn instances.

You have discovered some very interesting patterns on the skin of warriors in the Plane of Rage. Gather more information by collecting a variety of these skins.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Bolvirk skin 0/1 ALL
Hand Scarred Bolvirk Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I've never seen anything like it before. The being that you took this skin from obviously belongs to a culture that uses scarring and tattooing to represent rank of some sort. Most likely a scar or tattoo is earned in battle or when coming of age. The more scars the more power the creature would have in their society. But there is another layer of meaning here. There is a section here that appears to be written in a form of the giant language, then disguised with a laughably simple code. It appears to be a fragment of some sort of legend. . . Here, let me write it down for you.'

He hands you the Scarred Bolvirk Skin and Bolvirk Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Undead skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Mummified Pigmented Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is strange. This flesh has obviously been preserved using necromancy. But the inking that has been done to it is relatively fresh, done after the preservation and after dead. This is hard for me to translate normally, but I have some special tricks for understanding magical writing. I'll write this down for you, but the general idea here is that it talks of a ritual of passage, something about becoming full. I guess I never really understood the undead, perhaps you can make sense of it.'

He hands you the Mummified Pigmented Skin and Undead Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Kobold fur. 0/1 ALL
Hand Patch of Dyed Kobold Fur to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'What beautiful patterns! They look like decorations, at least at first glance. But I have a keen eye for art and an even keener one for patterns. There's a language in there, something like Kobold. It's sort of a pictorial description of, well, of a story about a powerful Kobold who became a god. It also talks about another god, a female. Here's a transcription, as best as I can make it. It's by no means complete, but with more information it might mean something.'

He hands you the Patch of Dyed Kobold Fur and Kobold Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Orc skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Torn and Tattooed Orc Flesh to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I've always known that orcs liked to paint themselves at times of war, but I've never seen this. These markings are permanent and appear to be very, very old. I'm very familiar with orcish languages, but I've never seen this one. It appears to be a combination of several modern and ancient versions of orcish. The combination makes it very hard to read, but it seems as though it is a history of something called a vessel. I've written it down for you, but you'll need more information to make sense out of it.'

He hands you the Torn and Tattooed Orc Flesh and Orc Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Evil eye 0/1 ALL
Hand Inked Evil Eye Hide to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is very odd indeed. You say that this is the skin from an Evil Eye? I have never heard of those creatures cutting designs into themselves or each other, but that's exactly what this appears to be. Even more surprising is the fact that this appears to be more than just a result of combat, it seems to be a code of some sort. The eyes are rather bright, and this makes it easier for me to understand what this code means, there's a logic behind it. It seems to be a path or method to achieve power in a place it calls Rage. There are a lot of details missing, of course, but here is my translation of the information encoded onto this bit of skin.'

He hands you the Inked Evil Eye Hide and Evil Eye Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Wurine fur. 0/1 ALL
Hand Decorated Wurine Hide to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'This is a fantastic pelt. It's scarred and bloody, sure, but look at it! Under the blood and fur there is a pattern scratched into the skin. It's not just an animal scratching at fleas, it's an actual language of sort. Very primitive and so very hard for me to understand, but I can make some sense of it. The text is by no means complete, but I see references to rage and anger and the perfecting of those emotions. Something about power and completeness being linked to such perfection. I guess it makes sense that a creature with such emotions would seek to the perfect form. Here, I've made some notes about what's written here. With enough information perhaps it will make some sense.'

He hands you the Decorated Wurine Hide and Wurine Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Drachnid carapace. 0/1 ALL
Hand Etched Drachnid Carapace to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, isn't this unpleasant! Spiders give me the creeps, you know. Huge sentient spiders. . . well it makes me dizzy to think of it! But I am a scholar and I must overcome this and examine this thing you brought me. Yes, there are definitely markings on this. It seems to be a version of Dark Speech and therefore easy enough to understand, but there is some form of code involved. I can only assume that this is to prevent it from being read easily. Why would someone do this? From what I can read of this, it seems to be the only way that this creature could retain memory of important information. It refers to itself as a Lore Warrior and implies that there are others, not all of the same species. Very interesting. Here, this is a copy of what I can read on this, um, skin. Perhaps with enough information a more complete picture will be visible.'

He hands you the Etched Drachnid Carapace and Drachnid Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Shiliskin skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Tattooed Shiliskin Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is not at all slimy as I would have expected! It's still a bit disgusting, though. I wonder what sort ink they used for these markings. It appears to be very long-lasting, and yet these markings have been retouched several times. I would think that markings this deep in the skin would last far longer than one lifetime. The language is incomprehensible to me, but I can understand the pictures easily enough. It seems to imply that this culture believes in a power beyond theirs and that there is a longing within them to serve that power. There is also an underlying tone that seems to suggest that they would destroy and replace that power once allowed into its service. Here, take these notes and this skin. It's a bit too creepy for me.'

He hands you the Tattooed Shiliskin Skin and Shiliskin Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the berserker skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Scarred and Tattooed Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Hmm, I'm not sure that I want to be known for my interpretation of skin art as language, but I'll see if I can make sense of it. The pigment seems familiar, like something the Northmen use. And the patterns seem similar as well. From what I understand of the iconography of that culture, this seems to be a story about Sullon Zek. Well, a very small part of the story, anyway. Most of it is missing. I wonder if the rest of the body had the story, or if it was carried in many pieces by separate people who would come together to be one book, so to speak. Here is what I can understand of the tale. Perhaps you can find enough pages to get an understanding of the whole story.'

He hands you the Scarred and Tattooed Skin and Berserker Lore Skin Translation.

Keep the returned skins for later use.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I see that you have a large number of translations from those saga skins. If you can bind them together into a book using a book binding and bring it back to me, I might be able to show you how to perform the rite that is described. I'm not really sure why any sane person would choose to do so, but perhaps you do.'

Create a book using a book binding and all nine pages. 0/1 ALL
Combine the nine Lore Skin Translations in a book binding (a container sold at most home cities) to make:

Saga Skin Translations - vol. 1
Saga Skin Translations - vol. 2

You have fashioned the items together to create something new!
Your task 'Saga Skins' has been updated.
You have created a book that explains the strange phenomena of the so-called lore warriors in the Plane of Rage. Hold onto it and the skins you gathered, Maelin might have enough information to make use of your book. When you think you are ready for a challenge and you have gathered some friends together, give Maelin the book back and he will tell you where to start.

This ends the task. Despite the warning to gather some friends, it is safe to immediately hand these two Translations to Maelin to receive your class spell.

You have been assigned the task 'Preparing Your New Skin'.
Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, these are very interesting! I've learned a lot from the things you have brought me, so I wanted you to have this.'

Doing so will assign you the task "Preparing your New Skin", which has no time limit. It is the task after that ("Becoming the Vessel") where you will have a time limit and need to be ready with friends.

As stated below, if you are killing mobs in the southern half of Devastation for skins, you're doing it wrong.
You only need 1 EE skin to flag your guild

Task #1 Saga Skins requires someone to farm all the listed skins.
Task #2 Preparing Your New Skins only requires Bolvirk, Orc, Shiliskin, Berserker, and Wurine skins in order to receive the Enraged armor set and this task is repeatable.
Task #3 Become the Vessel consumes the armor to flag 1 group for Razorthorn and is repeatable.

So get one person to do task 1 2 and 3, farm the 5 skins again, do task 2 3, repeat as many times as you'd like.

Mob locations

We just completed this quest for several of our toons and figured out some more information about how and where the skins drop.
First, hunt mobs in front of the zone-in to Sverag. After hunting for hours in other parts of Devastation, we didnt see a single skin drop until we started killing in front of the zone-in. All the mob types will spawn in that area but they will fight each other which works for you and against you. The following mobs are guaranted to drop the skin as long as they are blue con to lvl 75:
Shilikin - an elite soldier
Berserker - troll basher, vah shir fury
Orc - centurian
Undead - spite captain
Giant - bolvirk hersir
Kobold - elite
Spider - shadow strider
Werewolf - ravager
Evil Eye - overfiend

All of these mob types spawn with multiple other mobs and can be difficult to single pull, so have crowd control ready. The evil eyes are the most difficult to get to spawn, and they die very quickly to other mobs. We had to wait for them to spawn in Severag itself and then fight back to the named spawn site. If you head to the right inside the wall passages and work your way almost all the way back of the zone. The named mobs are always "Tyrant" something and spawns inside one of the buildings at lo N688 P458 with one add inside and two guards outside. A named spawned every time for us and will sometimes spawn immediately upon the death of one back to back. Hope this helps others trying to finish this quest.

This quest is for PoR raid progression. If you just want the spell, you can do any of the quest from Sverag, given by the indifferent con mob right inside the zone, past the second door.

Almost any quest from this list:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/qsearch.html?zone=341

Except the engines of destruction, Hero's challenge, or the razorthorn quest.

Basically, they are all collect 4 items then turn them in quests.

One caveat: The mob type that is currently in charge of sverag will not accept the drops from their own kind. I had to wait for the control to change, to turn in on an alt.

I have found that a skin almost ALWAYS drops off a yellow con to a 73. So guessing 74/75 mobs. They drop a lot more then 73 mobs.

White to yellow con to a 73. Typically 73 to 74, can't recall seeing a level 75 mob spawn in that area, unless it's a raid mob.

Most of the mobs used to be soloable, but some summon. A necro can easily split, pull, and kite most of them though, and you can still split and pull the summonable ones to a 1 grouper.

I know the trolls, giants, and spiders summon.. the rest used to be kiteable. Sometimes some summon and next time they wont, it's really kinda of random, but I would be ready to FD at a moments notice.

Got half the skins months ago, went back to finish up and the task had disappeared from task window. Looted a skin and task came back but it didn't show the previous skins I had looted.

Do I have to destroy the previous skins and loot them again or will the task update when I turn them in to Maelin?

Saga Skin Translation - vol. 1

Compilation of Notes Regarding the Phenomena of Saga Skins - compiled from notes by Maelin of Knowledge Vol. 1

Recently I was approached with some odd new information. One of the Planes of Power, the Plane of Plane of Rage, has been breached by Norrathians. Those that are so-called 'natives' appear to be brought there if they die when enraged or commit murder out of anger. By doing so they dedicate themselves to the goddess Sullon Zek and become a part of the cycle in the Plane of Rage. When they die they join a tremendous wall of the animate dead, each battling toward the edge of this wall so that they might be reborn into The Devastation and again fight with others like them. Their madness-driven goal appears to be to gain access to a fortress that lies at the center of the battlefield.

Such mindless conflict seems fruitless to a scholar, and it probably is. But there is an interesting concern here that has only recently been answered. Can this mass of angry warriors be considered a culture? Do they have an traditions and beliefs that they pass down to the next generation?

Their next generation appears to be other newly killed, angry warriors, so it might be a little complicated to describe their community at all. But they do appear to have a method for passing down traditions and lore. The strange thing is that they appear to be passing it down to themselves. These beings live an eternal existence of battle, death, and rebirth. As such, they tend to forget things from one rebirth to the next. It would seem that they have little that they need to remember, their fighting skills are always retained as is their anger. But some of them have been keeping stories on their bodies, the only other thing that survives with them every time they are reborn.

In each of the samples of this lore that I have seen there appears to be some slight variation on a singular theme. There is a ceremony of rite of passage that they believe is important. Important enough to dye, scar or carve their skins to keep the memory of that rite. There are other stories kept there, but all of those are tengential to this rite, which I shall describe to the best of my ability.

There is a goddess in the tower that lies in the Stronghold of Rage known to us as Sullon Zek. That goddess is calling to each and every being in the Plane of Rage. Apparently she enflames their rage and their destructive desires are focused on getting into the fortress and occupying it. From descriptions provided by adventurers it is obvious that this fortress is the only place of relative security in the Plane of Rage, but it is not security that these beings desire. They seek to be near their goddess and inside that fortress is the tower in which they believe she dwells.

--------------------------

Saga Skin Translation - vol. 2

Compilation of Notes Regarding the Phenomena of Saga Skins - compiled from notes by Maelin of Knowledge Vol. 2

Once they have achieved control of the Stronghold of Rage they can then begin their rituals in an attempt to earn Her favor. The tribe or army chooses a member to be their Subjucant of Rage. It should be noted that the title 'Subjucant' is an interpretation of several titles created in a dozen languages to represent this one position. It is representative of the feel of the title and is not intended to be a true word. This candidate is chosen with great care, as there can be only one Subjucant at a time. The method for choosing the Subjucant varies greatly depending on the race and cultural history of the group doing the choosing, but in all cases fighting ability and a deep seated anger are always the most favored criteria.

Once chosen, the Subjucant is marked with important symbols; their body cut, burned or inked in painful ways. The symbols are simplistic representations of anger, power, war, and strength. Of the myriad of markings on the skin I have examined, these symbols are always the same. They are the only markings that are the same among all those imbedded on the skins of the variety of species that exist in the Plane of Rage. This indicates that these symbols, and perhaps the ritual in its entirety, were acquired from a single source. Logic presumes that this source was the goddess Sullon Zek or one of her avatars or servants.

Once the painful marking process is complete, the Subjucant of Rage is required to sit at the foot of Sullon Zek's tower and focus his rage. His anger is to allow it to build and grow until it can no longer be controlled. If this rage is sufficient then they believe that the goddess will possess the Subjucant and he or she will become a Vessel of Rage. Once possessed (or claiming to be possessed) by the spirit of rage the Vessel of Rage is to go out and destroy until his rage is spent.

Here, however, there is a difference in the lore and observance of the lore. The older tales imprinted on the eldest of the skins says that the Vessel is to stride out onto the field and destroy his foes until there is no rage left within, until the amount of the spirit of rage he could contain has been exhausted. On the newest of the skins the tale is slightly different, though in a dramatic way. They say that the Vessel is to show his true rage by killing as many of his allies as he can before his rage is expended. Why this change in ritual has happened I can't know, nor can I speculate.

If the Vessel then returns to the foot of the tower for judgment by Sullon Zek. If he is worthy then the door to the tower will allow him to pass. If not then he will often be destroyed by his own tribe. As it is, many of these Vessels probably die in battle while expending their rage. How many of these are allowed to enter the tower is impossible to know. They claim that their reward is to fight alongside Sullon Zek and to learn the ultimate power that rage can provide. I have no information about this and will not speculate about the truth of this bit of lore. Whatever happens inside that tower, if anything, is a mystery to us right now.

For the most part I consider this to be an accurate transcribing.
