Kyralynn is located in the barbarian fishing village.

You say, 'Hail Kyralynn'

Kyralynn says, 'Hello, _____! I am the shaman Kyralynn. If you have banded armor, my husband Vrynn and I can form it into a new shaman armor using this totem and some reagents for the ritual. I can use a banded [bracer], [mail], [helm] or [cloak] to form this new armor.'

You say, 'mail'

Kyralynn says, 'The mail requires banded mail, 1 crushed dufrenite, a lancer swordfish fin, and Grizzleknot bark.'

  1. Banded Cloak is crafted (smithing, 102 trivial).
  2. Powdered Dufrenite (see below)
  3. Grizzleknot Bark drops off Grizzleknot, an extremely rare named treant in South Karana
  4. Lancer Swordfish Fin drops off swordfishes in Kedge Keep

Dufrenite is occasionally, although rarely, dropped by carrion ghouls in Unrest and clockworks in Solusek's Eye and also can be purchased in the magic shops in various cities including Plane of Knowledge, Halas, West Karanas, Rivervale, Grobb and Oggok for 157 PP. The ogre shaman Trug in the camp on the other side of the lake will crush/grind/powder it for you.

Grizzleknot
# Aug 23 2015 at 9:52 AM Rating: Decent
I got Grizzleknot to spawn but talking to the hermit who is an unkempt druid and told him I wanted to join them. He turned me down so I killed him and his wolf pups.. a short time later grizzleknot showed up (who is on the unkempt druid faction).. Killed him. Turned my tiems in all at once and got nothing. petitoning now.

Grizzleknot Study
# Jan 21 2003 at 3:13 AM Rating: Excellent
I camped for the Grizzleknot for 23 days on Kane Bayle server, no exaggeration. I had been using a ranger alt that I leveled to 30 (for SoW) specifically for the task. Around the 12th day of camping I decided to conduct a research to find out the spawning principles of the Grizzleknot. Based on posts I had read on this board, I gathered information on how to get this thing to spawn.

WHO IS GRIZZLEKNOT
The Grizzleknot is a named treant that gives you positive faction hits upon its death, as opposed to negative ones from regular treants. He carries Grizzleknot Bark for the Totemic Breastplate. He sometimes drops Treant Staff and Cloak of Leaves as well. The staff is slightly better in combat than Runed Totem Staff and procs root. The cloak has minor AC and +7 AGI. He is level 28. When asking for help killing/tracking the Grizzleknot or when asked who he is, just say he is a named evil treant. Once you stick the word 'evil' in, all those squeamish druid/rangers afraid of faction hits agreed to help me out. When you think about it, the Grizzleknot must be evil to have opposite faction hits so call it an evil named treant.

PLACEHOLDER
Grizzleknot's placeholder is 'a treant'. There are two types found in South Karana. There is a treant camp which has two stationary treants. The other one is the wandering treant. Some people are mistaken to think it is called 'a wandering treant' but it is just 'a treant' and it walks around South Karana.

SPAWN RATE
The spawn rate is very rare. I heard people stating on this board that the Grizzleknot had appeared twice over a few hours, some claim as early as in two hours. Because hours seem to fly by without notice while playing Everquest, it may have been longer than this without the players noticing. I find that the grizz/treant spawn somewhere around every 6-8 hours or more. It is not on a 24 hour spawn.

DESPAWNING
As far as I know, the grizz/treant does not despawn. On a few days I had a treant on track and did not kill him. About five hours later I log into my ranger again to check and the treant is still on track. On another instance, I didn't touch the treant and two days later, it was still on track wandering. Therefore I believe that you MUST kill this placeholder. This means that the next time there is a spawn, it will either be the Grizzleknot or another treant. Otherwise the treant will continue to wander around.

FORCING SPAWN
I had a theory that killing the camped treants would help spawn the grizz/treant sooner. There are often necros or shadowknights who like to camp the stationary treants. A day of shadowknights and necros camping the stationary treants didn't seem to affect the rate of the wanderer's spawns.

FACTION HITS
You get negative ranger/druid faction towards good people in Surefall Glade and Jaggedpine zones. The hit is not as huge as some people think. My shaman took nine hits from treants before going from indifferent to apprehensive. Actually, I don't know if I was indifferent or apprehensive to begin with. My ranger took four treant faction hits with no change. If anything, you would have to go through a lot more treants before you'd go KOS.

HOW I GOT THE BARK
Wouldn't you know it? On the 23rd day, I left on vacation and didn't come back for three days. When I came back, I shouted if anyone had seen the Grizzleknot. A shadowknight sent me a tell saying it spawned twice in the past two days and she had killed it. She turned in the bark with me and I finally got my shaman the Totemic Breastplate.

CONCLUSION
My best suggestion is make a ranger/druid/bard alt that can track. Have them stationed in South Karana. Start in Splitpaw and run south. Once you have Krak Windchaser on track, turn around and go back to Splitpaw. If you're able to get Krak on track and no grizz/treant, he's not there. Head north until you have putrid skeletons from the graveyard on track. Same with Krak, if there's no grizz/treant by the time you have the putrid skeletons, he's not there. Head to the northeast corner until you have the two stationary treants on track. No grizz/treant on track then don't bother. These three points are where the grizz/treant has his path set so if they don't show up on track then come back in a few hours. Continue to kill the placeholders (or ask someone to) every day until the Grizzleknot shows up, which may or may not happen anytime soon. The chance of him spawning or a regular treant is all in luck.

Lastly, COMPLAIN TO VERANT ABOUT THE DIFFICULTY OF FINDING THE GRIZZLEKNOT! I did already and you should too. Seriously, I'm happy I finally got my bark and my breastplate but the difficulty of finding this rare creature is far greater than the other mid-level class quests. I was shocked with how easily I got the warrior and ranger mid-level armors (with exception to ranger boots). But yeah, good luck and don't forget to complain to Verant so this quest won't be such a nightmare.

Five minutes
# Sep 03 2002 at 6:45 PM Rating: Good
I was on at about 12:20pm on Sunday and I decided to try to sit in SK and wait for Grizzleknot. I sat over near the other tree ents in the corner of the zone. I asked two rangers if wandering treants were up or grizzleknot was up. The first said no the second said yes. I was shocked I asked him to take me there I started to run I think southeast and before he could come and get me I ran into grizzleknot. I finished him off with no problem and got the bark. I got my totemic BP the next day. Give it a try late at night and ask if he is out there. just stop in once in a while. I tried a few days earlier and spent 3 hours waiting on him this time I waited five min. Good luck hope this helps.

can druids kill this tree
RE: any faction hit fir killing tree
# Jun 17 2002 at 8:20 AM Rating: Decent
Druids can, in fact, kill this tree. I was hunting for quillmane and someone had told me that as long as he was up Quillmane wouldn't spawn. Now I dont know or think this infor is entirely true, but I said what the hell and killed him. My faction is amiable to druids anyhoo. There were four faction changes, but two of the names elude me now. But I know you get a plus faction for the Guards of Qeynos and a hit for Unkempt Druids. All of you who play druids, and you know who you are 8), know that generally unkempt druids are on opposing faction with the good ones.

Ive hunted off and on for this treant for over 3 years now for my shaman. I can in fact do this quest with my wizard. He has gotten every quest piece now except the BP. If he is as rare as quillmane its no wonder I've never seen him. I'm gonna have to get a ranger to track him down :(

Any info on how to get him to spawn would be appreciated. I have had the swordfish thing sitting in my bank for over 2 years now.

Medium?
# Mar 15 2002 at 2:49 AM Rating: Default
What does a master smith gotta do? Anyhow, this quest calls for a medium banded mail. This item does not exist so please don't give any smiths a hard time when they tell you so. The item is called, simply, "Banded Mail." By medium all is meant is what races can equip it; the medium races. This has nothing to do with the SIZE: attribute either. Some of the banded pieces you will use in totemic armor are SIZE: SMALL. It doesn't matter. As long as the item is called only "Banded Mail," you are fine. A shaman took a big risk to prove this and it turns out I am right. So, if you can, when a smith tells you he can make medium banded mail and it doesn't say that, don't give him a hard time. Thank you.

RE: Medium?
# Apr 02 2002 at 9:19 PM Rating: Default
Where you are seeing 'large' it is refering to the size container it will fit in. If it is JUST labeled Banded Mail it is medium. If labeled Large Banded Mail or Small Banded Mail then it will be one or the other.

I was running my druid through SK when I picked up grizzleknot on track. He was walking along the river heading west towards the raider camp.I killed him with some regret, he being a treant and all.He dropped the cloak of leaves.I then camped and had my Shaman run over who was on the bridge when logged off.Now all I need is the lancer swordfin.

It is horrible to see now that in addition to all other Shaman, I now have to fight every other class who decides to kill quest mobs that decide that is the best way to make money.

If you think for one minute that I will pay to loot the mob you killed for a quest that isn't even related to your class, think again. I will camp him myself, thank you.

Is it greedy playes such as yourself that make it so difficult for other players who don't have the cash flow to buy quest items. I don't have the 4k to buy the Paw of Opalla either, but I am in the middle of that quest as well. My only problem up to now has been morons who camp the necesary mobs even though they don't require the item.

Your kind SICKEN me. Hope you meet many deaths without any possibl xp rezz deep in a dungeon somewhere.

Totemic Quests
# Jul 19 2001 at 1:14 PM Rating: Decent
Woot!! Yesterday was my first encounter with Grizzleknot, I was doing a transfer for one of my friends that has been camping in SK for a long time. During the transfer i did a /Who Ranger so I could be potentially let down once more and be told Grizzleknot was not on track. Well of course he said no, but about 45 seconds later while i was in a duel i got a tell saying he was heading North and closing the Centaur camp. Thes guy runs fast let me tell you, the Ranger said he could not keep up with him, but Finally I found him.

He went down like a Thailand Hooker, but in fact he did have to CLoak and Bark on him. So don't give up, if you happen to be running through the zone just do a who ranger, and see what they got.

One last thing, I was told that he is a 24 hour spawn, and A wandering Treant was his PH, well I killed a few wandering Treants so my faction went down with Druids, well after i killed him I did not get a chance to view the factions hits cause i went ld shortyly after, but seems that after the fitght when i went to get a port from NK, the druids there Kindly considered me? I think that seems a little Weird????

Grizzleknot has the following factions:
GuardsofQeynos gets better.
JaggedPineTreeFolk gets better.
QRGProtectedAnimals gets worse.
UnkemptDruids gets worse.

There ya have it.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jul 14 2001 at 10:52 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I was camping a tooth in paw today when i heard a treant pass by, i checked track and low and behold...theres grizzleknot! I took him out pretty easily than sent tells to all the shamans in the zone asking them how much theyd pay to loot it. The highest offer i got was 100p =\. O looted the bark than decided to port myself to wc and do a PC on totemic BP. Three people shouted 3k, so now i'm happy than i can easily make 3k by killing a little fishy in kedge =)The moral of the story is....if u see Grizzy, loot the bark, do the quest, and sell the bp. Some twink in EC will pay you alot more than those poor struggling shaman in SK >:P

Why not a Bloodstained tunic?
# Jun 27 2001 at 10:11 AM Rating: Default
Hellow all, i have a Bloodstained Tunic and i happen to think the Bloodstained tunic is better cus we Shaman need WIS. If you where as dumb as me you would have 109 WIS at lvl 22. When i started a Shaman i put all the skills into STR cus i didnt know they needed WIS so if ya need WIS as bad as me get a bloodstained tunic, its better than a Totemic Bp. And if ya did the same thing as me such as have LOWWWWW WIS you should get one of those veshas book things, i dont want to go get one cus im lazy so i have a shield with +5 WIS.

Don't know whether any easier.

While hunting in the Rathe Mountains, Occulys Ogrefiend appeared in the Cyclops section. I immediately messaged my friend a 41 druid, me being a 37 shaman. She came over, we formed a group and went about killing him, took us 20 min, as we each took turns kiting him around. Killed him, looted and there was the Totemic BP. I knew he dropped Totemic armour, I was totally stunned when it appeared. Saved me waiting for Griz to spawn. Was in SK for week and a half and never once he spawned. I guess this also saved me the trip to Kedge.

Grizz Bark
# Apr 30 2001 at 6:34 AM Rating: Default
Can you say I am the luckiest Shammy in all of Norrath? Not only did I camp the Glacier bear for 6hrs and get the pelt but on my way through to Lake Rathe to get my coveted helm (via S. Karana) I did an /ooc.

I offered 100pp to anyone who had the bark already if willing to multiquest. This got everyones attention and ppl started tracking like crazy.

Was he on track? Answer was no, no, no. By the time I got to aviaks, ready to zone, A very kind druid had him on track. 3 hits with frost strike and old Grizzleknot was down. Nice loot, cloak of leaves +7agi and Ac boost, Great Staff (15pp), 5pp and of course, the BARK. I paid those who tracked 20pp each. They were way grateful.

I must have tried for about 8 nights just casually passing through. I got lucky. Maybe you will too. Never spent more than 30 mins in zone waiting for him. Now off to find that fish!

I was just wondering through SK one day when I happened across Grizzlenot. Being a druid I was reluctant to kill him, but I heard he was such a rare spawn that I could'nt pass him up. He was over by the centaur village, but looks like he just roams all over the place. Picked up the Cloak of Leaves ( +7 agi +5 hp 4ac all/all ) which is a pretty nice item. Then just did a /who shaman and let the first shaman I found loot the bark. He was especially happy.

Probably don't even need wolf form, my DE SK had no trouble turning in items picked up to help a friend's troll shammie get some totemic.
Note that the non-quest barbarians in the area are a different faction, but there is plenty of room to get past them or just use invis to be sure.

Multiquesting

I hear faction with the LR shaman is a big issue. I luckily stumbled upon Grizzleknot but I'm not a shaman and I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to take advantage of getting the bark. Does anybody know if this can be multiquested?
RE: Multiquesting
# Feb 25 2001 at 4:24 PM Rating: Default
Yes. Generally, if you are not KOS and you have items to turn in to the NPC, it can be multiquested.
Many of the newer quests require combining no-drop items in a no-drop bag, so only one person can do that (though that bag may be just one of several items in the overall quest, so the combined result can be multiquested :)
