A bard or enchanter can charm him for you. A ranger or druid can Calm Animal(spell) and he will move from ready to attack to indifferent while the spell holds.
This little guy is used in a map piece quest. If you bring the bear that's guarding him 4 Tizmak meats (the no drop ones) and THEN hail this guy and say something about wanting a map piece, supposedly he'll give you one. This quest originates I believe in Iceclad and the ultimate reward for the quest is the (someone's name's)Eyepatch of Plunder (which is an incredible eyepatch, but one of the other map pieces drops off of Lodizal, so... major deal)...
Anyway, that's all sketchy and I've never done any of it myself, but I hope it clears up why these mobs are stationary, low-level, gobs of hit points. I understand you can kill the bear (Bloodmaw I think his name is?) - but it takes forever and isn't really worth it.
Could probably also kill this guy with roots and dots (roots allow the dots to take place, but aren't necessary to hold them in place - they won't come off their spot to attack you). In any case no real gain from either aside from the regular bear drop loot from in here from the bear, experience points commensurate with that level creature, and the knowledge that you've killed one <for you safari hunters>.
nope, very true. There's a buncha Vellious MOBS like that. krommif recruiter in Kael, this Gnome a lvl 5 turtle in EW, a named Kodiac, and that Cobalt trigger in CS. VI evidently doesn't want them killed for XP, so they made them really low lvl, and also doesnt want them killed, period, so they made them pretty tough. There's a woman in Befallen now with infanite HP, and hella magic resist, so I guess they'll try anything
