This quest was quite a relief to complete a year or so ago when I did it. I never did get to use it on Valdonov because, quite frankly, I dont have the time to do yet another time sink of a quest. Hence, I just sold my beloved Ashbringer in the Bazaar on Vazealle for 5000 plat. Enjoy.

Does this Vampyre bane only work in TM or will it work on the MMC vamps?

It will not work on old world vampires.
The honest truth about this weapon - and the shield quest

I started working on this weapon when I was a gimpy little 44 pally donning Ry'Gorr armor and hunting in the Katta graveyard for exp with a shield in one hand and a wurmslayer in the other...

I always dreamed of using this holy blade to slay the evil vampyre boss in TM, with a band of guildmates behind me reducing the entire castle into a pile of ashes, then handing in Valdanov's remains for a shield so uber that it would have trippled my AC...

Well, that was my idea anyway.

I dedicated a lot of time to this blade. I hunted for the coterie within Katta until I learned their spawn cycle (ouch - 6 hour timesink). I waited endlessly for Sasha to spawn by the bank. I killed hundreds of green/light blue Revenants in SD.

I finally finished this blade at level 61. It was more of a relief than joy.

It sat in the bank for over a year.

I ran exactly 9 raids in the mid-50's level into the Vamp castle, hoping for Valdanov to spawn. Eventually, the "raids" consisted of just me and my cleric bot on the 2'nd computer. Eventually, I stopped by into TM from time to time for some soloing on the days Katta was expected to spawn.

One day, curiosity got the better of me and I decided to test the Ashbringer in action. I went to the bank, dusted it off, gripped it with my two hands, end went after vamps in TM. The first few greenie vampires that greeted me in the castle steps took one look at my blade and commented on how nifty it looked as a light-source.

When the blade met their cold flesh, it didn't really bring the damage that one would expect. I was teased with an instant dual-proc, raising my expectations that this would be a buzzsaw for undead scum - much like cleric summoned hammers. Unfortunately, procs were few after that initial barrage. In fact, it procc'ed much less frequently than Ward of Nife, which procs very little to begin with.

The total damage was not very impressive at all. Average hits were in the high 80's - low 100's. The blade was not particularly fast. It was very hard resisting the temptation to bag this thing and wield a real weapon. Overall, I was supremely dissatisfied with this weapon, even on greenie vamps.

Then Valdanov spawned.

I called in a few friends and we engaged. I had waited a long time to meet Valdy face to face with this weapon in hand. We engaged in combat and I watched in horror as caster pets wielding the inferior store-bought bane weapons were outdamaging me... by a lot. It was as if my melee was irrelevant. When Slay Undead finally struck, it landed for a whopping 260 points of damage, followed by two more cleansings of 274 and 345 in 10 minutes of fighting. Ward of Nife procc'ed about 20 times (with about 4 resists), and Flame Shock procc'ed about 8 times (with no resists).

For the Valdanov encounter, this sword is practically useless. This encounter has been reduced to one where a person runs around in circles maintaining aggro (kiting), while the rest of the group (especially pets) run behind nicking it to death with storebought bane weapons. Even better if you can get a few nukers to zap it to death while you run around in circles stunning it with Cease to maintain aggro.

I was at once thrilled to finally finish the shield quest, and saddened by how useless the sword was in the whole thing.

The fact is, this sword is good if you are around level 46 and can't get any better and only want to exclusively hunt undead. If you see it in the Bazaar for 500pp, and it is an upgrade, then by all means get it. It is a really good light source, and has no recommended level. Otherwise don't waste your time questing this.

Bane Damage ?
# Oct 03 2003 at 2:21 PM Rating: Decent
So how exactly does bane damage work? How is the bane damage worked into the regual damage? Do you just add the bane damage to the regular damage while killing vampires? If so, that would mean the damage on this sword would be 28 when killing vampires and the damage ratio would be 1.357 which I think is excellent. I am almost level 50, so I have the Valor of Marr self-haste spell, so the delay would be even shorter. On top of that, this sword has a nice proc and can do additional damage using the Instrument of Nife proc as well. I'd love to have this sword to clean up in Tenebrous and the Mistmoore Catacombs. Also, when figuring a 25% haste, do you subtract 25% from the weapon's delay? If that IS the case, then the damage ratio with this weapon using Valor of Marr while killing vamps would be 1.018 which I think is most excellent. If I have done my calculations incorrectly, please correct me so that I am able to correctly figure bane damage and haste/delay.

Undead Bane vs. Vampyre Bane? Interchangeable at all?
# Feb 08 2003 at 7:46 AM Rating: Default
Anyone EXPERIMENTED during this fight with Valdanov with UNDEAD BANE weapons? I just looted
an Ornate Broadsword from Tower of Solusek Ro and
it has UNDEAD BANE, but not vampyre bane. I'm curious if anyone has tried Valdanov Zevfeer with
an UNDEAD BANE WEAPON. Please don't reply with guesses and meaningless supposition. I can make guesses on my own, I don't need guesses, only looking for facts and players with them from experience, and not heresay.

It's obvious that a vampyre bane weapon can only hit that specific type of undead. But I'm curious if my new 1hander will hit this named Vampyre specifically. It also has Bane Fire damage bonus. I'm quite certain it will hit all other undead without a problem...that's not what I'm asking.

Hope I headed off all the potential newb responses.

We just took out Valdanov today with Blessed Stakes and Phosphorous Torches, but to test the theory we had a cleric summon a hammer to use in the plight of this run of the mill vampire. As you know the hammers lvl 65 Clerics can summon are pretty mighty vs undead, not one hit could be landed. With normal weapons, same thing, not one hit. Bows and Arrows (MAGICAL) not hit once out of 20 shots. The only thing I can reccommend is to do the Johanius Barthelo *spelling* quest for his Stake of Slaying. With that and a Phosphorous Torch dual wielding *if it applies* it makes for a 8-10 min fight depending on how many people you have Nuking, Rezzing, etc. We only had one death, and it was the Paladin in question after his own shield, suffice to say he died for his shield. If you're not strong enough in numbers or levels to do the quest for the Stake of Slaying, I wouldn't reccommend taking Valdanov in the first place, or anything in the tower, except maybe the front entrance mobs. Blessed Stakes 11/21 can be bought in Katta and used on Caster pets, buy two if you know your pet can dual, very cheap in price. Phosporous Torches drop from the Katta Guards in TM as well. These serve VERY effectively since not only do thay have 1dmg + 10 Bane to Vamps but in addition it has Fire DMG: 4!!!! so for 1-15dmg over a delay of 24, yeah its a great equalizer for the Stake of Slaying, but also would be an even greater compliment to this wpn. 16/21 + 15/24, you do the math.

Well, lol i have to agree that paladins die alot for there shields. I did this quest with my guild FOS, backing me up. All the fights previous to the vampire valdanov were easy. The key is a tank, damage sink, and that we have . When we killed valdonov we did it with the bought stakes in katta and it worked well i bought all we needed and ot to expensive. war had two and i had the relfective combine thats the sword before this sword, that just blinds the enemy with a proc.

We won the battle, and i got the shield, but i stole agro from everyone including the healer while trying to save me, so now im trying to get this sword for our tank. It did proc very often, and i look forward to the upgrade, but its not absolutly a must have to even fight the vampire. Was a long fight and everything in your post i concur with, but im still going to get one of these completed think it would be very cool.

No bane undead doesn't work. Only Bane: Vampyre, because he is the main vampyre they made it this way.

Seeing how the bane: unknown are all now bane: vampyre its safe to say that sony is doing some cleaning up in the code.

You could try, it may hit for just the undead bane damage. Can't tell for sure with a lot of the changes that have happened.

But the last time I fought him I had bane:vampyre and it was a long battle but a really fun one...

Purpose of this Weapon
# Oct 14 2002 at 9:22 PM Rating: Decent
If any of you have spent the time in Katta/Tenebreous Mountians that i have you may have met a Vampyre named Valdanov. He happens to be immune to all melee except for weapons that have Vamp Bane. He is level 62 and has high resists. Makes for a difficult fight if you cannot hit him. Several Pallies with this can make that fight a bit easier.

This weapon is a situational weapon.. Kinda like the Emp in SSRA.. You need to have bane weapons to take him down.. Same goes here.. The leader of the Vamps is "Melee Immune".. You need to have Bane weapons to even hit him.. So, this is not that bad..

"You clearly don't understand the way damage is done..."

Someone hasn't read up on their bane damage quests. Heh.

"it's an 18/38 weapon: Then +10 (as in not 28/38) added to that AND then the + for bonus (depending on level)"

Aye, it IS a 28/38 versus vampires. That's bane damage. Just tack that right onto the weapon. The fire damage bonus is a resist check though, HOWEVER, Vampires have VERY LOW fire resists. So the fire damage works on them more than, say, your standard Owlbear or Grimling. So it does end up having a slightly better ration than 28/38 ... WITH a nice damage bonus if you're high enough level to do the quest. AND a proc. It just gets better and better, when USED against the proper monster it was designed to kill.

"This weapon is a joke for such a high level quest..."

Against a Froglok or a Dragon, the weapon's not worth using, obviously. Against vampires, it does the job very well.

With the fire dmg, this weapon is effectively a 33/38 weapon.
Nice Weap
# May 10 2002 at 3:11 PM Rating: Decent
Unfortunately, at the level that this can be obtained easily (or better yet, used against vamps), most pallys are using somewhat better. I, for example, weild an Argent Protector. Which, at 42/49, plus 34% belt haste and 25% spell haste, clears rooms.

Other than that, this has the potential to be very nice for the pally that can't afford to get or can't get a group to kill for a nice weap.
Anyone know

Anyone know when this procs. I have an Arbitor's Combine Greatsword and a Nathsar Greatsword. Looking for nice a proc'n weapon. I plan to get my ghoulbane this week sometime after I hit around 27ish(have some friend helping me, well I hope they will) I'd like to have a nice 2h that procs for solo hunting. Versus vampires with this and IoN oh man. Course Vampires arent as popular as the other undead in norrath, still good to have. And 23/38(Against low fire resist mobs) isnt too bad either.
Ghoulbane 2.0
# Mar 07 2002 at 8:06 PM Rating: Decent
This is a great weapon...I just happened to be looking for quests to do while I am journeying around Norrath in my young years (36) and I cannot wait for the chance to complete this quest. What a great sword for a paladin to own. Not only does it scream Holy Warrior and Divine Justice, it has the capablity of being a 33/38 with proc against vampires. Does anyone know if vampires are coded in the game as undead? If so, stack this with Instument of Nife and you are quite the Buffy.
#Ardnahoy, Posted: Oct 07 2002 at 10:04 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yes, vamps are undead. IoN is a lovely thing to use against them.

Damage vs. Bane
# Jan 14 2002 at 5:58 PM Rating: Default
Actually, fire damage does not add to base damage. It only adds an extra 5 damage to what you do. For instance, you hit for 23, it checks fr and if the mob fails, another 5 points of damage is added. Bane damage on the other hand adds to the base damage, so against vampires, this weapon is 28/38, which makes it very nice indeed.
RE: Damage vs. Bane
# Jan 16 2002 at 6:56 PM Rating: Good
Drauka, sorry, but I believe you have it wrong. The fire damage is added to the base damage. It's not an additional 5 points of actual damage, it's an additional 0 to 5 points added to the base damage, depending on whether it has a full resist, partial resist, or complete failure to resist. The bane damage is also added to the base with the net effect that this weapon could perform as a weapon with a damage base as high as 33.

I've established to my complete satisfaction that the LSoEE works this way with its magic damage, and am quite confident that the same applies to the various other forms of resistable damage bonus. And as a simple logical argument in favor of this view, 5 points of additional damage is so small as to not bother with at all, but a 5 point increase in base damage yields very gratifying results.

Let's see...

18/38... 23/38 against creatures with low fire resistance (great against Giants in Kael)... 28/38 against Vampyres (and hopefully against the vampire-types in Mistmoore)... and 33/38 against Vampyres who fail a fire resistance check.

Plus the Flame Shock proc.

Sorry, but this thing OWNS the Nathsar Greatsword.

I have an ethreal longsword on my troll sk which has that 5 magic damage. The thing is, you can't ever tell if thats actually working or not unless you know what your absolute max damage could be with a 16 dam weapon at your level so you know when you get the 5 by seeing your max hit get higher. But you can only tell that on max hits.

It would be spammy but I wish it gave a message like (magic damage bane damage ) or whatever when it worked.

Nice weapon for a pally to whip out on the cotiere I guess or other vamps.

Just find yourself a few weapons with damage that varries between 16 and 21...1h weapons (since 2h weapons get greater damage bonus'). Try MoSS (19/29), Noct (18/24 i think), and and a weapon with damage at 16...fight with them for a day each and look at your max hits, then use the LSoEE and see how it fluctuates. hopefully the damage will match (most of the time) the weapon that you have with damage 21! But, if it's being treated as a 16 or 17 damage weapon (epsecially as a SK), I'd say go with a Noct Blade or one of the new 2h weapons for pal/sk. (Two tined corpse pitchfork is 26/22, Wideblade Greatsword 35/35, the ever popular Windblade which is 50/44...There is also a very cool weapon that I want to give a try is the Vengeful Diamond Blade, it's 20/27 1hs with three magic damage and some sta/hp. Would be nice if it were treated as a 23/27 all the time)

you could alwas try with testing on your friends. log the dmg with a weapon that has same stats and then the weapon with - bane or Sv dmg - and have your friend check his max hp . do 1 or 2 minute runs a few times and see avrg dmg. one thought is that bane and Sv dmg bonus you might need a higher level to start using.

Heh, How many of your buddies play Vampyres?
But still, I see what you're saying, you can get the base damage and then use this weapon against a troll buddy (low fire resist) and then get the rest of the damage info from killing a vampyre, but I had to say it...
