My group got 12 in 1 hour by camping 1 purple cloud area. Kill all the grey con mobs in the area except the beetles and kodiaks, you'll want to pull those into the edge of the cloud and kill them after they transform. Also, we never once got any type of spider or cat mob to transform.
You can spawn the mutated etc mobs by just dragging them thru the purple smoke rings by the summoners. This transforms regular grey-con mobs into the ones you want to get the drops

I found this to be true as well, if you stand in the desert area along the wall the tunnel is on. I set up camp just far enough back near befallen to not get agro from passing oblivion mobs. But close enough that I could see the set of oblivion casters turning the animals into essence droppers.
I used my dark reign necklaces but still got agro if I pulled the changed animals from too close to them. So, I waited till they were roaming before pulling. All in all, this trick helped me get four toons their last mission in about 45 minutes. Not bad at all.

Lochrin was right, they're from any cat/bear/spider that walks into the purple haze by the Obliteration summoner circles. So an easy trick to make more is to stand near those circles, pull mobs w/ taunt or weak spells, have them run accross the purple, boom, instant target mob. Stone not a common drop though.
Agree. I did not see a purple orb but that may because I have those types of graphics turned off. There is a static group of Oblivion mobs outside the Befallen zone. If a cat, beetle, spider or bear path's through them it will turn them to one of the mob types that will drop the essence.
Just run back and forth between Befallen the tunnel to the refuges. Mobs will path there. There are two other roaming groups along that wall that will turn mobs as well.
If you bring a mob to one of the groups to turn it, get ready to FD, fade or run for a zone line because the Oblivion mobs will agro.

Near the entrance to Befallen is a group of "an Obliteration summoner" loc Neg 600, Pos 500 as mobs pass by this group they turn in the corrupted mobs you need to kill for the essence.

this is by far the worst quest I have ever done. The zone needs more mobs. I've spent at least 6 hours today doing this and I have only 3 essences!

Kill the level 6 trash in the hilly area around LOC neg 600 neg 585 (central part of the zone). Respawns are fast...got 4 essences in under 45 mins.

Add "a mutated death beetle" and "a soulrend panther" to the list of mobs that drop this.

Quest is Purging The Corruption givrn out by a Wood Elf in Kithcor.
Also dropped from an enraged kodiak in old commonlands.
Dropped by the morphed mobs in old commonlands.
Morphed animals walk over the purple corruption. Kodiaks, cats and spiders.
