The purpose of this item is for each group member to gain immunity to the effects of AoE in the final room of this instance.
However, the effects seem permanent... in that you may not need this the 2nd time you do this task? Anyone else notice this?
Then again, resists may have been high enouhg to simply resist the AoE....
