As far as I can tell it doesn't do anything. Tested it in bloodmoon keep on the assassin mobs that cast distraction (mes) and my lingering essence of cazic thule.
From reading what's here it's very very possible this pets ability is to break mez ...meaning if you're fighting a mob that mezmerizes you or your party he could break it. Used properly I see it as a benefit and a uniquely benefical one.
Apparently none of the new familiars in eq1 or any of the illusions have any stats whatsoever. They decided to severely tone down the loot cards in eq1 forsworn.
An extremely disappointing decision on Sony's part to make the new familiars so utterly useless. I don't think they should be overpowered by any means (The Naggy one should have kept the stacking restriction in my opinion) but having them do something would be a nice touch. I still like using my Bixie one for the long lasting levitation for example.
Purely a guess - I think the familiar acts as a rune if your struck from behind. The item lore is "Caught by surprise, mortal?" and the effect is named Familiar Runic Gargoyle.
The game does indeed know if your facing or have your back to a mob, therefore, it's possible some clever programmer wanted to make an item that would actually take advantage of that coding.
But, after all is said and done, this is only my best guess.
