I thought this topic could use an update so I'm taking it upon myself to do so. Last night and tonight I've hunted in Erud's Crossing (December 15-16, 2006) and here is some updated information.
Seahorse Roe has not yet dropped off any of the vampire bats though I've killed dozens of them.
Seahorse Roe does rarely drop off of kerra snakes, but I killed dozens of those and I only collected 1.
The forage rate is more frequent, but you're going to be there for a while unless your forage skill is quite high. My forage is only 68 and every 10-12 cycles I would get one, once I did get 2 in a row.
The kerra spiders did drop them slightly more frequently at first but after the first 3 spiders I killed I never saw another one and I killed about 20 spiders. Make sure you have cure poison because at low levels it's nasty.
I killed about 10 seahorses and none of them dropped seahorse roe. It seemed to be a long time ago they used to, so I was quite surprised to not get any off of them. I have no idea whether or not they still drop from these mobs though it seems logical that they would.
You'll also want some type of snare or root because they do take off at low health and they do gang up on you.
Also, do not kill anything at the top of the hill near the pit in the center. You'll have 3/4 of the zone on you if you do. A good camp spot is near the docks and the mobs will wander that way. Be patient and they will come to you. Much fewer adds that way and controlled kills at their best. Watch out for the Erudite Madman though. Nifta will aggro you if you attack him. I found that out the hard way though I managed to escape before I died.
The island madmen are druids, wizards and rangers, I believe. They are a bit rough at lower levels. I have yet to see any Seahorse Roe drop off of any of them, but I didn't kill enough of them to be sure. There is a higher forage rate of them than there is kill rate. Experience is good there until about level 17.
