This is also Droped by Watch Sergeant Grolj in OT. When the Glowing Golem is killed for the SK Greenmist quest; this guy is also spawned. Kill him get the shield.
Charming the guy to do the jade turn in is pointless since you need to be Amiable. (Charming NPCs sets thier base faction at Indifferent).
Forget wasting time waiting around for people to hunt Kunark Dragons so you can hit them for faction. If you are determined and want your hammer with immediate results, keep reading.....
How you get your Overthere Hammer the easy way in 1 day of work no matter what race you are:
#1: Buy (from players) or have a Shaman make you an Essence of Darkelf potion (Illusion: Darkelf).
#2: Slay tons of Sarnak Berzerkers and bank the whips. (Use PoK book to bank them in PoK bank everytime you fill your backpacks).
#3: When you have gathered 32 STACKS of whips (thats 128 total whips) you can get near the outpost in OT and drink your potion to become a darkelf and have "Apprehensive" base faction as that race.
{Note: A stack of whips always means 4 whips at a time.}
#4: Then go into the outpost bank and get out your whips to turn in to Captain Rottgrime (hail him to stop him so he doesn't pace back and fourth between his Marines and cancel the trade).
Closing: While my Iksar Shadowknight mule was in Darkelf form I went from Apprehensive to Indifferent after 10 STACKS of whips. After 12 MORE STACKS of whips I went to Amiable. Then I bought one jade from one of the Gnome vendors in the Outpost and ran it to the Skeletal Foreman and turned it in for my Overthere Hammer.
{Note: When I ran out of the Outpost and targeted a Cliff Golem and canceled my Darkelf Illusion, I was "Scowled" at instead of "Amiable" in my natural Iksar form. Iksar have VERY bad faction with most NPCs in Everquest and I may need to turn in many hundreds more to be loved in my natural Iksar form.}
Too bad i'm not that insane to go through with the last part.
I hope this method helps you get your Overthere Hammer in one day. (It took me ALL DAY to do this.... literally.)
EDIT: YUCK Whats wrong with Sony? They broke faction and illusions big time. I tried to pull a trick with a new character and I was KOS and died. Disreguard my old old method that I posted above until Sony fixes that faction (if they ever return it back to the way it was when I made this guide.)
Actually charming only makes the mob indifferent to everyone else. The person charming the mob sets the faction to amiable. I should know, my necro charmed the dude for the gate hammer just fine.
First off, you are talking about the hammer that procs the OT gate, which has NOTHING to do with this item, keep these things to thier own posts. Secondly, you're wrong in your assessment of charming. I have a human bard who worships bristlebane, I simply drank the potion, charmed him, hailed him, followed the text line, gave him the jade and poof, I have the hammer, I haven't turned in any whips, braids or anything else and I have done a lot of killing in OT. Took me about 15 mins to finish.
by charming him you are automatically amiable, however if you charm him, and your friend cons him, he will only be indifferent.
I understand that, the post made by TheRealDrache, stated that charming the npc was pointless....it was a rebuttle to his post proving that I did indeed charm the npc and that is wasn't pointless.

Yes, years later after looking at this thread, I was wrong about the charming method not working good. It does work good. I just stumbled into this thread and noticed that comment from 2003. I was thinking about something else. A Thurg quest where charming the person doesn't work. Anyway, carry on.

Hehe, i wouldnt want to consider them american marines. :) They are undead! And Rottgrime is way easy to kill with a good puller and a group of 50-55's. Im sure our marines arent that easy! :)

You have to turn in a ton of braids to see your faction increase. Don't expect that turning in a few you will instantly be allied with VS faction. I had to turn in over 100 braids b4 I could do the Overthere hammer quest i.e. get to amiable.
The quest itself, not the quest reward, is what raises your faction. Did you see the message on your screen that read "Your faction standing with Venril Sathir got better"? That has nothing to do with the fact that you also just got a shield, nor does it have anything to do with what happens to said shield. The only way to undo your work is to do something that causes the message "Your faction standing with Venril Sathir got worse" to appear on your screen. Namely, hunting TD Ogres, KC, or (at high levels) Goons.
I spent an hour killing the eastern Sarnak Camp in OT... I got 8 war braids only. My faction didn't even go significantly.. Is there a place overrun with Berserkers? Raping sarnaks for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for a month isn't my idea of fun.
You shouldn't waste your time at the ruin camps... they mostly spawn knights and casters. Berks only pop maybe 1 in 20. but they are a random mob wandering the zone. Most often you will see them wandering near the southern watering hole (not the lowbie mudpit... the one just east of skyfire zone) they hang out around that area and are really common I'd say about 1 berk to every 2 or 3 knights. the only problem with that is groups. there are usually a bunch of grouping goods who have no care (or knowledge) of the no drop braids when they kill the berks so they loot and destroy. if there is a group ask someone in the group if they will part with the braids.
Actually you can bind in the overthere.. just go to the outpost and swim around it to the beach. Be careful no to get to close to the dock if you are kos but in the corner along the wall is a bind point. I have been bound there by many a shaman.
The reason for the Quest is to get your faction up so that you can do the hammer quest. After faction is Amiable you talk to the foreman and he says give me two jades and he gives you a giant hammer so have a sewing kit or open slot and it is 6 50 2hb, PROC is port to OT at LvL 50. That is the reason behind the braids, Also i tried giving the dumb shield to my pet and it doesnt show up so i assume for some dumb reason he just cant use it
You know, I listen to players of good races complaining that 'I can't bind in Overther, I can't bind anywhere near Lavastorm.' Well, deal with it! As a Dark Elf Shadowknight of Innoruuk (and a roleplaying one at that) their are a very few places I can bind. So when I see the good races that have over half the world to bind at, I look at them ad think, learn to live with the fact that it's a short distance to bind in Firiona Vie!
It does look better than the SBS. Once you have amiable faction with the Outpost, you can hand a jade to the skeleton foreman & get a Worker's Sledgemallet. This hammer procs (at lv50) a Gate to the Overthere (you appear near the ruined boat the skeletons are working on)

The main benefit of this quest is that it's one of the only ways to increase faction in the OT outpost. It's ridiculously easy to aquire the Warbraids, every Sarnak Berserker is carrying them.
So for all you people who are tired of getting molested by the Dragoons, you might consider a way to give those warbraids to Rottgrime
Ya, but most of the peeps that are KoS to the dragoons and whatnot are also KoS to most of the junk in OT, it would be nice to be able to work on faction there. Its a nice place to bind, but besides that, theres really not all too much for good guys. ;(
As a good race, would it not be possible to have a high level enchanter, charm Rott, and then you give him the braids? Or does the charming negate the quest?
There are no faction hits when doing a quest with a charmed NPC. Of course, if you're an enchanter you can charm the guy you get the hammer from and get the hammer anyway, without doing this quest.
You'd also be much better off waiting another 20 levels or so and going on a Faydedar hunt, or any of the other Kunark dragons. Killing the Kunark dragons is the only other way to get OT faction (Venril Sathir) up, other than the braid quests that is.
As a paladin you shouldn't even be thinking about doing a quest for evil! BAD BAD BAD! Now go wash your mouth out with soap and don't say such evil things.
