Bane vs Elemental

Bane damage adds on at the end of the damage calculation.

Elemental damage (ie Cold, Fire, Magic) adds on to the base weapon damage before calculation, but a resist check is made first.

Least that's what I'd always been told.

I've had this weapon for about 6 levels now, and I'm pretty disappointed in it, really. Up until I hit 56, my DPS was abysmal using this... I tried all sorts of combos...

BBF prim / Entwood 2nd
BBF Prim / SoS 2nd
Entwood Prim / BBF 2nd
etc etc

I tested how well the cold damage was hitting by swapping on my Whistling Fists (12/20) in place of the BBF in all the various combos. DPS climbed dramatically.

For some reason, when I hit 56, the cold damage seemed to get resisted less. I know my damage bonus took a boost, but I found the BBFs were now doing a better job than my WF.

Anyway... I'm confused as heck about the whole thing, and Sony's always said elemental damage was acting kinda screwy at times.

By the way, anyone have a suggestion of which of the 4 weapons I should use in what combo? Entwood / SoS is what my friends tell me, but I can't believe my Whistling Fists and Blackbone Fists are useless compared to 2 cheap buyable weapons :(

for monks, what i have learned is. you want the fastest weapon you can get for your primary to take advantage of your damage bonus and then the best ratio you can get for your secondary. if i were you i would put BBF in primary and your entwood has a better ratio than your WF and SoS but your WF add extra 25% haste which would most likely be better damage just keep entwood on hand for when your grouped with a bard that has a better haste song than jonathans

both bane and elementals are added to base damage. its damamge bonus, and damage bonus ONLY that is added after the fact.

7 damage 16 dly
4 band magic damage
damage bonus of 11

Bane damage

meens that it's a 7/16 wep with a chance of beeing a 11/16 wep if low MR onmob or anything in between it's diffrent every hit the 4 magic all depend on the resistance and lvl of mob.

Damage bonus
1hb
ok if damage bonis is 11 the min you can hit with wep is 11 and it will add 11 to what ever the hit is but only on primary not on sec that is why low dly is good on primary so you take advantage of damage bonus on crappy hit like a 1/3 wep would rule in pri but really suck in sec
2hb
damage added to your hits and min you can hit with it

#kaetarmoonrain, Posted: Apr 23 2003 at 6:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dmg Bonus raises to max you can hit for with that weapon, doesn't add 11 to every hit. The max you can hit for is something like weapons dmg x2 + 1 + str over 100 percent (i.e. 120 str is 20 percent extra) + dmg bonus.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 22 2003 at 9:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Dumbass. Dmg bonus has nothing to do with the weapon. It's (level-25)/3.

Really? My Monk's level 50

*looks at his Entwood Mace* Dmg Bonus: 8

*looks at Peacebringer* Dmg Bonus: 13

I've heard two theories... either it depends if it's a 1h weapon or 2h, or it depends on the delay of the weapon.

One-Handers = (level-25)/3
Two-Handers = Formula changes with delay, but generally the higher the delay the better the damage bonus

So these two numbers are very different.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 29 2003 at 5:22 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) depends on delay
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 22 2003 at 9:35 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) wouldn´t know about that yet on the char i have wielding this piece of weaponry, which is my lvl 12 beastlord, got it at lvl 9 :)

If any of you doubt that bane damage adds to the base damage (in this case, providing the mob doesn't have higher than normal cold resist), here's my arguement.
I being a lvl 55 epic monk w/bare fist primary and SoM secondary had a dps of around 46 (unbuffed). Putting this weap on, as long as i'm not in velious, i can punch up to 63 and my dps is more around 50-51ish. there is no way that i could hit for 63 and have that much higher dps if it were "regular damage bonus." IF it were, 7/16 would take me down to probably around 40dps

You are a noob. Damage bonus is added to final damage amount, elemental is added to base damage when it succeeds the resist check. Check your max hits if you disagree.

survey says ... XXX.

Wrong, elemental damage does indeed add to base weapon damage ... damage bonus adds to final damage.
RE: OMG... plz
# Dec 15 2002 at 4:14 AM Rating: Default
Sorry, but no. If Damage Bonus was added to final total, then I wouldn't be able to hit with my Stave of Shielding for a whopping three points of damage, which happens at least once per fight.
RE: OMG... plz
# Dec 19 2002 at 1:50 PM Rating: Decent
I assume the SoS is in your offhand, which does not receive the damage bonus. Damage bonus is indeed just tacked on to the final damage number (in primary hand only). Put the SoS in primary and you'll find that you never hit below the damage bonus amount.

holy butt kickers bat man! this is like, uba bst gloves, u got all resist, wis, str, 16 delay, 16 stinkin delay! sigh, they are no drop tho =P oh well, you cant win them all
RE: WOW
# Mar 02 2002 at 7:19 PM Rating: Decent
Hrm... these happen to be a h2h weapon.. not gloves ;-) but yeah, all in all 16 delay is nice, but the damage is only 7, however factor that cold damage in and you get 11/16 (if the mob doen't have high cold resists)

another "situational" weapon

Uh, that's not how bane damage works. I forget the specifics, but really the 4 bane damage gets added into some equation that gives it a CHANCE of doing the extra damage. So it's hardly an 11/16 when bane is a factor.

HOWEVER, 7/16 is a truly amazing dps rate. It's 2 off of the monk EPIC. And it outdamages the Jade Mace.

Sure there are probably a few ultra-uber weapons out there that outdamage this (there always are). But it's hardly "situational."

Not sure how you can say a 7/16 weapon out damages the jade mace (9/18).

Pretty easily in primary. Damage bonus is applied more frequently.

Using my level 52 damage bonus, Jade mace IS a better weapon. IMO all the h2h weapons up till Gold inlaid Ulak are junk, stick with jade mace/SoS combo, you have more skill in 1hb for now anyways.

Ever seen a WF? It'll rip your JM a new one... 12/20 25% SPELL based haste with +attk etc and I finished mine at lvl 49. Anyways this while only 2 dmg off monk epic is not nearly as good. Monk Epic with the epic effect spell haste puts it at a 9/10 if you have a FBSS or better item haste... and believe me if you have your epic you can get an FBSS.
RE: damage output
# Oct 29 2002 at 2:38 AM Rating: Decent
Actually, epic outdamages WF by just an itty bitty smidge (in main hand, in off hand WF outdamages epic). I use epic + CCoM = 76% haste, which yields a delay difference of rougly 2: better ratio on WF, but faster delay on epic = very marginal dps higher, epic over WF.

In fact, the loss in damage is so insignificant, a lot of people opt to use WF in mainhand and another weapon (in my case, adamantite club) in offhand.

RE: WOW
# Mar 05 2002 at 10:53 AM Rating: Decent
It checks the cold resist in the same way a cold based spell checks cold resist. If you get a successful check, then for that round of meelee you have an 11/16 weapon, if you get an unsuccessful check, then it's 7/16. If you head on down to Naggy's lair, this thing is pretty much an 11/16 all around, but if you're fighting ice giants, it's pretty much a 7/16 all around. For the most part, given that you're fighting mobs that are dark blue most of the time, you'll probably get a successful check 3/4 of the time, making it effectively 10/16, though while high level raiding, you're often fighting mobs that can be a very high dark blue, or yellow or red, so you're looking at it being closer to a 8/16 probably. Really you need to experiment with it and find out where it works and where it doesn't.
Added Damage
# Mar 02 2002 at 8:59 AM Rating: Excellent
Basically what this means is that every round the mob fails a save vs. cold your weapon scores as 11/16.

Just like spells the mob can have a partial or complete resist. So the weapon ranges from 11/16 to 7/16 each round depending on the cold resists/immunity of the mob.

Unless you're fighting ice dragons or velious mobs this is going to be a DAMN good weapon.
RE: Added Damage
# Mar 02 2002 at 2:14 PM Rating: Default
Element damage isn't added to base damage,(bane dam is though i believe) so it wouldn't really strike as an 11/16, just a 7/16 with an extra 4 damage tacked on, which is still damn good though.
RE: Added Damage
# Mar 04 2002 at 4:48 PM Rating: Decent
Bzzzt. wrong :)

Element damage and bane damage are both added to weapon's damage rating. Element damage is CONDITIONALLY added...the target can fully or partially resist. So basically this weapon is 11/16 vs. blues and 7/16 vs. reds. :)

Maybe you're thinking of the damage bonus, which is a number of hitpoints added to any hit.
RE: Added Damage
# Mar 02 2002 at 7:14 PM Rating: Default
It does, really. Elemental damage is calculated like bane damage, just resistable.
RE: Added Damage
# Mar 06 2002 at 6:36 AM Rating: Decent
Yep, parsers have shown that the mob gets to try to resist every one of the bonus dmg's tho, so this can be anything from 7/16 to 11/16 each hit.
Equation is (not sure, just what it looked like from parsed logs), resist check, 1xtra base dmg, resist check, 2xtra base dmg, etc etc.
ouch!

When a monk equips the Celestial Fists (monk epic), doesn't it make your unarmed fists 16del/9dmg weapons? With that in mind, this weapon looks pretty good.

does that mean that wheever i hit, i will automatically do 4pts of cold based damage?

No, you have a chance of adding 4 damage to your weapon if the mob fails its cold save.
