Alex McDarnin, and some of the other barbarians in that hut, are on Merchants of Halas faction. This is probably a mistake on Verant's part, where they might have copied NPCs out of the city of Halas and forgot to change their factions to Firiona Vie.
He is not a merchant, and cons threateningly to an Iksar. He is the sole reason why an Iksar with max FV faction still can't buy his spells there.
He doesn't drop any loot. Killing him lowers the following factions: Merchants of Halas Wolves of the North Shamen of Justice
Located on the pier (beteen the shore and where the Golden Maiden docks) is a hut with barbarians inside. Some sell alchemy supplies, one sells spells. In the back of the hut is Alex.

You say, 'Hail, Alex McDarnin' Alex McDarnin says 'Hail! Do you by chance bring news from the North? I sure do miss the cold. It is just a bit too warm for me down here. Well, I wish you the best of luck in your travels. Tomorrow is a new day and I am off in search of [new writings] to take back to the Tribunal.' You say, 'what new writings?' Alex McDarnin says 'There have been tales of new writings being found in some of the ancient ruins that abound outside of this outpost. These writings will be very valuable to my church. The sooner I can return with the writings, the sooner the Tribunal can put the teachings to work. I am always in need of aides so if [you want to help], just say so.' You say, 'I want to help' Alex McDarnin says 'We won't be traveling together, but here is what I need. There are four writings that still elude me. Return one of these and I'll spare one of the four extra writings I have. I am looking for the writings called Talisman of Jasinth, Spirit of Scale, Cripple, and Cannibalize III. Be off, and may your travels be safe!'
He can return either of the following spells, it is random: Insidious Decay, Talisman of Shadoo, Shroud of Spirits or Torrent of Poison.
Hits for 120 and didn't seem to pull any guards on me, Anyone know how to raise faction with him in Kunark?
I got my 52 iksar shaman indifferent to FV and this stupid npc sits right next to the shaman vendors(which is the only reason I wanted good FV faction)
One more thing, at night time he seems to go underground at the captain's hut, thats how he got me cause i had to run into water to see what was hitting me.
If you're a druid, and you killed the McMannus brothers for xp at about level 30 - don't go into the underground water tunnel - he'll kill you there, but he can't see invis (whew)
