ZAM at E3: Our First Look at Defiance

I have a confession – getting the chance to see games in action before anyone else at E3 is a lot of fun, but sometimes the experience leaves you with more questions than answers. You’re drawn in by the gameplay and intrigued by the concept, but when games are still early in the development process, getting all the information you want out of the developers doesn’t always happen. Trion Worlds' upcoming MMO/shooter-hybrid Defiance is a great example.

We were at Trion's E3 booth to witness the unveiling of Defiance, and here’s what we know.

Trion, Syfy Reveal Defiance Site and Trailer

Trion Worlds and Syfy just launched the official site for Defiance, and it features a teaser trailer for the game! This cinematic video gives us a glimpse into the world of this shooter MMO, which will be interconnected with a Syfy television show. Head over to the sparse site to watch the trailer!

It has also been announced that the Defiance television series will be penned by Rockne S. O’Bannon, a legendary sci-fi TV writer best-known for his work on Warehouse 13, Alien Nation, SeaQuest DSV, and Farscape.

Defiance will be unveiled behind closed doors at the Trion booth at E3 this week. We'll be there to check out the live demo, so keep an eye on ZAM this week for more details! Also, feel free to browse through all of our E3 news.

Defiance, Trion's Syfy MMO, to be Revealed at E3

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trion Worlds' Defiance will be unveiled at E3 next week! We've known for quite some time that the company behind Rift has been working with Syfy on a new franchise that will launch as both a shooter MMO and a television show, but we'll finally get to see it on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in a few short days!

Here are some details on Defiance from The Hollywood Reporter:

"Set on a future Earth, Defiance introduces players and Syfy viewers to a world ravaged by decades of conflict, where humans and aliens live together in a world the likes of which no one has seen. The game combines the frenetic action of a top-tier console shooter with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic. The game's story will take place in the San Francisco bay area, while the TV series will be set just outside of St. Louis, MO. Because they exist in a single universe, the show and the game will influence and evolve each other over time, with actions in both mediums driving the overall story of Defiance."

It's also worth noting that the Defiance page on the Trion Worlds site has been updated to reflect that the game's name has been revealed. Just to be clear, no release date has been set for the game or the TV show.

We'll be at E3 next week, so we'll be sure to bring you news on Defiance from the floor. What are your thoughts on this MMO/TV hybrid?

Is Trion Worlds' Syfy MMO Called Defiance?

It's no secret that Trion Worlds, the creator of Rift, has been working on a new franchise that will simultaneously launch as an action MMO and a show on Syfy. Today, it appears that a press release outlining Syfy's programming slate let it slip that the project is known as Defiance.

According to sites such as Massively and MMORPG.com, the press release originally named Trion's Syfy project as Defiance. However, it seems the announcement has been edited to remove that name. It now reads, "Syfy is partnering with game developer Trion Worlds for a new entertainment franchise that will seamlessly pair a primetime series with an online video game, scheduled for 2011."

It looks like we're going to need to wait for an official reveal from Trion Worlds and Syfy to see if the Defiance name holds firm. While we wait for more details to emerge, you can check out some concept art on Trion's teaser page.
