I'm not sure what to say beyond, "I'm enjoying it."
It feels like what the creators of Galaxy Quest would have achieved if it had been about a real space explorers instead of actors. The characters have realistic flaws and the Family Guy-esque absurdity is minimal. Hits the right combo of drama and comedy for me. And I think I may be in love with their adorable security officer.

It feels more Star Trek: Next Generation than Galaxy Quest to me. I can't stand the two helmsmen. I will agree that the security officer is a cutie, though.

Amusing bit about this, which I noticed in the first episode, commented to some friends, but I don't think I did here. They have a "pilot" and "navigator", but, reminiscent to Star Trek, the exact roles of each seems vague and changes from episode to episode. The ginger seems to be the one who pilots the ship when they're in combat maneuvers, but then sometimes he's also ploting the course. Or not. The other guy seems mostly to be there to make jokes and drink soda (although they dropped that after the pilot, at least so far). Maybe he's doing "navigating" in the background, and the other guy just pushes the buttons? Dunno. But it does remind me of Checkov and Sulu, where you never quite knew which one was actually doing what job.
As I mentioned in the general thread, I honestly think MacFalane wanted to do a serious take on Trek style sci-fi, but the only way he could get a show was if he sold it as a comedy/farce, similar to stuff he'd done before. Because so far, 3 out of the 4 episodes have been fairly straight forward sci-fi, and would not be out of place just swapping in any random Star Trek crew into the same exact plots. Language is more loose, and the crew is less Federation Stiff (which is kinda fun actually), but other than that, it's the same sort of show.
I'm actually enjoying it. Not sure how the overall fan reaction is, but most of the people I know are enjoying it too.

Latest episode of Orville was pretty good (time paradoxes aside. Wormhole never existed, Theron never came back, they were never saved, wormhole was never destroyed, Theron did come back, they were saved, wormhole was destroyed, Theron never came back...). This is definitely not your normal MacFarlane fare. It got really bad reviews for the Pilot, so I'm not expecting it to last. I think people went in expecting something completely different. MacFarlane fans jumped ship, would be fans of the actual show type never hopped on, and bad reviews stop new people from even bothering to tune in.
Maybe the MacFarlane-Fox relationship will prove strong enough and he can convince them to keep it going. But I'm not sure that works outside his animated comedies. We'll see.

I'm curious how they managed to get these big name actors to show up for these single episode bit parts. Liam Neason did a one minute speech. His make up would have taken longer than it would to do the actual work. Now they get Charlize Theron, who hasn't done TV in years for a what was probably a single episode character. Does Fox own their souls or something?

I was a little amused that Pigeon Death Norm McDonald is the slime alien.
Seth Green and Seth Rogan both also have unrealistically amazing celebrity connections. Maybe it's the name and the actors get confused as to which Seth they're agreeing to work with?

I'll just reply to this to make a note that in the last episode of Orville, Slime-Norm was filling just about every hole in the Doctor in a possibly Hentai-Inspired Hormone-Induced love scene.
