Since my usual topic thread has been pretty lax lately I decided this might be a good opportunity to write about my happenings of the day.
Ever since I did a Windows 8 upgrade my computer will not sleep on it's own. This is a known issue with some versions of Win 8 called "insomnia." After much troubleshooting I decided to just reinstall the OS not keeping any files (the first time I saved all personal files). The result? By Golly it slept...but oddly it's still sporadic. It will sleep on the time interval sometimes, but not others. Anyways, I'm over that.
After reinstalling I need to to point my computer back at the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ which houses about 6 Terbabytes of data. I mapped the network drive to a letter (z:) in this case but the stupid thing would NOT stay connected while trying to transfer a file. I spent roughly two hours of the course of the night trying different configurations, all the while talking to my - as of 5 minutes ago - ex girlfriend. While talking to her I thought "Hmm, it's odd she wants to go to bed at 8pm," but thought nothing else of it. While continuing to tinker I looked up at the computer (HTPC running through the living room 55" TV) and thought, "Man, I can't believe it's only 8:40pm." Then, I glanced over at my kitchen and noticed it was, in fact, 10:40pm. Eurika! My system time, after the reinstallation, was off as was the time zone. Since the Netgear ReadyNAS keeps internal time I thought this might cause a conflict similar to when system time is off and you attempt to login to a webmail serivce; the cookie expires before it's created and you get booted out. After correcting the time and time zone I once again remapped the drive and low-and-behold it came right up and is still connected fine after 45 minutes.
Anyways, that's my tale of woe for the day, but in the end it was a happy outcome.
